To overcome the limitations of inefficiency and high operational costs associated with conventional oil–water separation technologies, this study introduces a novel membrane material inspired by the natural adhesive properties of mussels, derived sustainably from discarded face masks. A straightforward, eco-friendly one-step modification method employing gallic acid (GA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was adopted to fabricate a superhydrophilic coating on polypropylene (PP) membranes. The modified membrane exhibited exceptional wettability, characterized by a water contact angle (WCA) of 0° and an underwater oil contact angle (UWOCA) of 162°, along with remarkable flux performance of up to 43,935.11 L·m −2 ·h −1 for oil–water mixtures and 1,328.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 for emulsions. Performance tests further demonstrated significant enhancements in hydrophilicity, separation efficiency, fouling resistance, and reusability under demanding operational conditions. Environmentally benign, mechanically stable, and simple to implement, this membrane technology represents a promising approach for both sustainable recycling of waste face masks and advancement in high-performance separation technologies.

It is of great importance and practical value to develop a facile and operable surface treatment method of materials with excellent antipollution and antiadhesion property, but still a huge challenge. In this work, a series of pseudo-zwitterions are prepared from electrostatic assembly of cationic polyethyleneimine and anionic phosphonic clusters. These pseudo-zwitterionic assemblies provide a strong hydration through electrostatic interaction with water and in turn create a barrier against oil foulants, leading to a nearly zero crude oil adhesion force. The pseudo-zwitterions-decorated surfaces exhibit exceptional water-cleanable oil-repellent property, even when they are completely dried and without prehydration before fouled by crude oil. While using these pseudo-zwitterions-modified polymeric membranes for separating surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsion, less than 10% decline of permeating flux is observed throughout a 2-h continuous separation experiment, showing excellent emulsion separation ability and antipollution performance for high viscous oil.

Tannic acid (TA)-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) coating has excellent hydrophilicity, and can be applied to a variety of materials. But it has poor stability in the air. To improve its stability, we have developed TA-APTES-Fe(III) coating in our previous work, but there are still some problems remained such as tedious steps, and undesirable anti-crude oil-adhesion performance, etc. Besides, both TA-APTES and TA-APTES-Fe(III) coating cannot realize the hydrophilic modification of the inner surfaces of porous polypropylene (PP) membrane. To solve the above mentioned problems, we developed superhydrophilic and stable TA-APTES- tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) coating via one-step process in this study. The new coating can realize the superhydrophilic modification of the inner surfaces of porous PP membrane, and endows the PP membrane with good water permeability, which cannot be realized by our previously reported TA-APTES and TA-APTES-Fe(III) coating. Besides, the stability of the coating is greatly improved by introducing stable alcoholic hydroxyl groups derived from TEOS, and the resultant modified membrane can keep superhydrophilic (CA about 0°) and underwater superhydrophobic (underwater oil CA above 150°) even after being stored in air for more than 6 months, ultrasonic treatment for 10 min, or being rinsed by water for 24 h (3000r/min), exhibiting outstanding stability. More importantly, the crude oil adhesion force of the new coating is as low as 4 μN even under the preload force of 300 μN, showing excellent anti-crude oil-adhesion property. The PP membrane modified by the new coating possesses ultrahigh water flux (10384 L m -2 h -1 bar -1 ) and can realize highly efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsion (above 99%). This work is expected to accelerate the practical application of TA-APTES coating.

Oil and gas transportation has been plagued by pipeline blockage caused by natural gas hydrates nucleation and crude oil adhesion . While traditional coatings with inhibitory functional groups can inhibit hydrate nucleation, but their inhibitory performance can be restricted by crude oil adhesion. Meanwhile, anti-crude-oil-coatings fail to inhibit hydrate nucleation owing to lack of inhibitory functional groups. Thus, how to coordinate the inhibition and anti-adhesion properties of coatings is a rigorou8s challenge. Moreover, for water-phase dominated pipelines, inhibitory performance of coatings will be inevitably weakened if the coatings cannot offer sufficient density of inhibitory functional groups. Here, we report a strategy for designing coatings with anti-hydrate-nucleation and anti-crude-oil-adhesion properties, which can be achieved by introducing hydrophilic inhibitory functional groups into the polymer polyethylene glycol and constructing micro-nanostructures by coating them with hydrophilic nano SiO 2 onto skeletons of porous Ni foam. Compared with uncoated Ni foam, the hydrate formation induction time of coated Ni foam was prolonged by 517.8 % and the adhesion force with crude oil was reduced by 93.3 %. The micro-nanostructures constructed by nano-SiO 2 and Ni foam increases the density of hydrophilic inhibitory functional groups and minimize the contact area with crude oil, which contribute to improve the anti-hydrate-nucleation and anti-crude-oil-adhesion performances of coatings. Molecular simulation and experimental results indicate that the hydrophilic inhibitory functional groups not only inhibit hydrate nucleation by disrupting the ordering of water molecules, but also repel crude oil by forming hydrated films . Therefore, this study offers an effective strategy for the development of coatings aimed at mitigating pipeline blockages caused by hydrates nucleation and crude oil adhesion.

Membrane separation is an appropriate method for the treatment of emulsified wastewater. But emulsified wastewater always contains oil droplets with a broad size distribution, and the tiny oil droplets can easily intrude into the pore of membranes during the separation process, which can cause internal fouling of membranes. Reducing the pore size can alleviate this fouling, however, the strategy may cause a decline in flux. Therefore, a more efficient strategy should be proposed. Herein, modified nylon mesh with well mechanical properties and low crude-oil adhesion was chosen for crude-oil/water emulsion. Before the sieve separation, a preprocessing strategy of squeezing coalescence is applied to the emulsion, resulting in the preprocessed emulsion with large and homogeneous crude-oil droplets. And the preprocessed emulsion can be continuously and efficiently separated by the sieving membrane. Compared with directly separating the original emulsion, separating the preprocessed emulsion can prolong the service life of the sieving membrane. The prepared modified nylon mesh and the coupling of the squeezing coalescence process and the sieving process have the practical application value for industrial crude-oil/water emulsion separation.
