An efficient collection and recovery of high-viscous crude-oil from oil spillage through an environmental-friendly way is extremely important for water remediation. Herein, a new material of thermally-reduced graphene-oxide coating and decoration of hydrophobic-layer over a compressible wood-sponge was proposed as an adsorbent. Owing to the preferable photothermal conversion, an in-situ solar-assisted thermogenesis process could increase the temperature to 88 °C within 100 s under 1 sun illumination and decrease the viscosity of crude-oil for easy adsorption. The fabricated adsorbent exhibited great performances in separation and adsorption (7.28 g/g–0.801 g/cm 3 ) of oil-spill; with fully active-collection of 50 mL crude-oil within 20 min. Numerical modeling was also employed to gain an in-depth understanding of the adsorption and regeneration processes. The temperature gradient and structural dots subjected to compression stress for both photothermal induced adsorption and compressible recovery of crude oil were investigated as the dominant factors. The adsorbent also exhibited satisfactory adsorption and separation capacities for common light oils and heavy oils. Moreover, the adsorbent could be employed for feasible adsorption in semi-open seawater-environment under light, showing potential for practical treatment of offshore oil-spillage. This work designed a potential route to overcome the dilemma of crude-oil adsorption, due to its inherent high-viscosity, through in-situ photothermal thermogenesis using environment-friendly materials derived from natural wood. The knowledge obtained from this work would help in developing novel adsorbents with applied and ecological merits and further understanding of the related mechanisms.

Emulsification is one of the key mechanisms for the enhancement of crude oil recovery. Although it is desirable to create stable emulsions during the recovery process, the formed emulsions must be easy to break in order to recover the emulsified crude oil before processing. Thus, stable crude oil-in-water (CO/W) nanoemulsions stabilized by rhamnolipid were prepared in this work. The stability of the prepared CO/W nanoemulsions was monitored for at least one month. The prepared CO/W nanoemulsions were very stable with no oil or water separation after 30 days of preparation. Enzymatic demulsification was ineffective in destabilizing CO/W nanoemulsions with less than 10% demulsification even after a month of incubating enzymes in the emulsions. Contrarily, switching the emulsion pH to a lower value using HCl resulted in a complete demulsification within 1 h, irrespective of the bioemulsifier dosage used to stabilize the CO/W nanoemulsion. Surprisingly, switching the emulsion pH to a higher value using NaOH also provided a full destabilization of CO/W nanoemulsions when a lower bioemulsifier dosage was used. However, the efficacy of pH-switching using NaOH decreased with increasing the bioemulsifier dosage. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating the complete breakdown of the CO/W nanoemulsions stabilized by rhamnolipid biosurfactant via pH-swing technique. It is also the first study demonstrating the ineffectiveness of subtilisin A and Alcalase enzymes in breaking the tight CO/W nanoemulsions.

Nickel and vanadium in crude oil adversely affects the quality of petroleum coke and refining process. Polymer brushes bearing high-density ligands have shown promising nickel removal ability. In this work, submicron polybutadiene (PB) grafted by aminodithio- carbamate acrylamide (PAMDTC@PB) was prepared and characterized by the infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and elemental analysis. Based on results of molecular simulation, PAMDTC was selected as ligand molecule at first. Then the nickel and vanadium removal rates by PAMDTC@PB and traditional polyacrylic acid brushes (PAA@PB) were evaluated through the electric desalination process, both in the model and real oil samples. The result shows that S atom in AMDTC is most likely to chelate with metal porphyrin compounds and AMDTC molecule presents highest chelating activity. Compared with PAA@PB, the removal rate of Ni and V porphyrin compounds with the aid of PAMDTC@PB increases significantly, with an optimized removal rate of 46.91 % and 56.81 %. To achieve better metal removal efficiency and higher utilization rate of prepared polymer brushes, sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate (SDD) is introduced into the electric desalination process as a adjuvant. The results indicate that the addition of SDD leads to a increment of 10–30 % to the removal rate of Ni and V and a reduction of brush dosage by 200–400 ppm in the electric desalination process, exhibiting great potential of industrial applications of novel desalination process with adjuvant.

Effectively separating wide types oil-water mixtures from immiscible to emulsions and in-situ recovering viscous crude oil is an urgent issue in alleviating water pollution and recycling oils. We developed a composite sponge of Cu-HHTP/Fe/PDMS@sponge with superhydrophobicity, excellent photothermal conversion ability and stability for multi-type oils separation from water environments. For light oil-water mixtures, the sponge showed super separation efficiency up to 99.95 % and reusability in the long-term; for oil-in-water emulsion, the separation efficiency was as high as 99.49 %; for recovery of viscous crude oil from water, the absorption capacity of the sponge reached 70 g/g and the continuous absorption rate was up to 6.56 g/min. After soaked in harsh chemical solutions and 500-cycle compression, the sponge still exhibited excellent flexibility and recoverability in viscous oil. The excellent performances of the multifunctional sponge were due to the construction of micro/nano-scale hierarchical structures by PDA and Cu-HHTP, protected with PDMS coating to improve both the hydrophobicity and stability. The introduction of Fe 3 O 4 with Cu-HHTP strengthened the photothermal conversion efficiency with the sponge surface temperature rapidly increased from room temperature to 102.4 °C under simulated sunlight exposure (1 kW/m 2 ), and resulted in the sponge can be remote-controlled magnetically. This simultaneous, fast and continuous oil-water separation and adsorption processes can be readily and widely applied for oily water purification and oil-spill cleanup.

The existence of calcium and nickel in crude oil causes serious damage to oil processing equipment and reduces the quality of products. These metals are extremely hard to remove as they exist in form of stable oil-soluble complexes. If they could be removed during the electric desalination process, economic benefits will be greatly improved. The current study thus aimed to seek clean and non-corrosive demetallizing agents to chelating calcium and nickel during the electric desalination process of crude oil. Two different N-substituted pyridines based core-shell materials of P2VP@SiO 2 (2-vinylpyridine) and P4VP@SiO 2 (4-vinylpyridine) were first prepared, and their metal adsorption capacity and selectivity were explored and compared. The structure and mass grafting ratios (GR) of two materials were determined by FT-IR, TGA, elemental analysis (EA), GPC, SEM and TEM. The GR of P2VP@SiO 2 and P4VP@SiO 2 under different monomer concentrations, reaction temperature and duration were studied. In addition, the effects of various process conditions on nickel and calcium removal rates using the prepared P2VP@SiO 2 and P4VP@SiO 2 were investigated. It was worth noting that due to the difference in N substitution positions, for the same pyridine functional group, P2VP@SiO 2 exhibited more stable adsorption selectivity, while adsorption capacity of P4VP@SiO 2 for calcium and nickel is much better than P2VP@SiO 2 . The calcium and nickel removal rates by P4VP@SiO 2 reached 61.3% and 67.2%, respectively. Briefly, P4VP@SiO 2 could be used as a highly efficient demetallizing agent for removing calcium and nickel in crude oil, with high metal adsorption capacity.

The low-boiling-point distillate (LBD) via vacuum distillation of biocrude produced from hydrothermal liquefaction of soybean straw was hydrotreated to produce trace-sulfur liquid fuel. The effects of five hydrogen donor solvents (HDSs), including cyclohexene, cyclohexane, decahydronaphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene, and Indane, on heteroatom removal efficiency were examined at 350 °C for 2 h with 6 MPa H2 added and 5 wt %(Pt/C)/feed. The LBD to HDS mass ratio was 1:1. HDSs not only could reduce the production of solid and gas and increase the yield of upgraded oil but also could favor denitrogenation, desulfurization, and deoxygenation of the upgraded oil. Among the HDSs examined, decahydronaphthalene showed the best performance for denitrogenation, and tetrahydronaphthalene was the most suitable HDS for deoxygenation and desulfurization. By employing a decahydronaphthalene and tetrahydronaphthalene mixture (w/w, 1:1) as the reaction medium, the effects of temperature (300–450 °C), time (1–6 h), H2 pressure (0.1–10 MPa), and Pt/C loading (0–20 wt %) on the product yields and quality of the upgraded oil produced from hydrotreating the LBD were examined. The upgraded oil was the dominant product fraction under all tested reaction conditions and varied between 76.7 and 87.3 wt %. The HDS mainly acted as a hydrogen transfer agent in the LBD hydrotreatment process, during which the HDS provided the hydrogen for the hydrogenation reaction, and this consumed hydrogen was resaturated by the external hydrogen source. A more positive synergistic effect was observed for the removal of N, O, and S when using the decahydronaphthalene and tetrahydronaphthalene mixture than when using decahydronaphthalene or tetrahydronaphthalene alone. N was the most difficult heteroatom to remove, followed by O and S. Catalyst loading was the most influential factor affecting the N, O, and S removal efficiencies. Under optimal reaction conditions, 93% of N, 95% of O, and 99% of S in the LBD and HDS blend were removed, which corresponded to contents of 0.05 wt %, 0.42 wt %, and 21 ppm in the upgraded oil, respectively. The equilibrium restrictions on denitrogenation, deoxygenation, and desulfurization were essential factors affecting the removal efficiencies of heteroatoms.

Membrane separation is an appropriate method for the treatment of emulsified wastewater. But emulsified wastewater always contains oil droplets with a broad size distribution, and the tiny oil droplets can easily intrude into the pore of membranes during the separation process, which can cause internal fouling of membranes. Reducing the pore size can alleviate this fouling, however, the strategy may cause a decline in flux. Therefore, a more efficient strategy should be proposed. Herein, modified nylon mesh with well mechanical properties and low crude-oil adhesion was chosen for crude-oil/water emulsion. Before the sieve separation, a preprocessing strategy of squeezing coalescence is applied to the emulsion, resulting in the preprocessed emulsion with large and homogeneous crude-oil droplets. And the preprocessed emulsion can be continuously and efficiently separated by the sieving membrane. Compared with directly separating the original emulsion, separating the preprocessed emulsion can prolong the service life of the sieving membrane. The prepared modified nylon mesh and the coupling of the squeezing coalescence process and the sieving process have the practical application value for industrial crude-oil/water emulsion separation.

Acidic substances (naphthenic acids) were found in crude oil, which provides favorable conditions for the formation of surfactants. N,N-Dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCHA) can activate the naphthenic acid in the crude oil to form the surfactant by noncovalent bonding. This process has an unusual meaning for the crude oil pipelines transportation by the method of forming a low-viscosity oil-in-water emulsion. At the same time, CO2 can be used as a demulsifier to separate crude oil and water at the end of pipeline transportation because the surfactant has a CO2 stimulus response characteristic. In our study, it was found that crude oil-in-water emulsion can be formed and has very good stability. CO2 has a high demulsification efficiency in emulsions with lower crude oil content. For high oil content conditions, the emulsion cannot be demulsified completely by CO2. Since sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and the like are liquid and corrosive, this is not conducive to its application as a demulsifier in crude oil pipeline transportation. Organic acids in this area have a stronger advantage obviously, so citric acid, oxalic acid, acetic acid, and lactic acid were used as demulsifiers in this article; all of them have good demulsification performance in high crude oil content emulsions, especially citric acid. Meanwhile, DMCHA can be recycled and reused by adding NaOH to the lower aqueous solution after demulsification.

Nickels in crude oil often deactivate the hydrocracking and catalytic cracking catalysts. Strong acids are widely applied to remove these nickels, although they cause severe corrosion to the subsequent catalytic cracking and processing equipment. Polymer brushes bearing specific groups which can adsorb nickel ions are considered as desirable non-corrosive nickel removal agents. In this work, micro-sized spherical polymer brushes bearing imidazole groups (PVIm@SiO 2 ) are first applied to remove trace nickels in crude oil with the help of electric demulsification . The effects of polymer brushes concentration, oil/water ratio and electric demulsification temperature on nickel removal efficiency are investigated. Compared with the monomer (VIm) and polymer (PVIm) bearing imidazole groups, polymer brushes exhibit a much higher nickel removal efficiency than the other two, which is approximately 66.7%. In addition, the regeneration of polymer brushes are achieved by a rapid and simple process using diluted HCl. As well as, the removal efficiency of Ni remains 62.5% in 5 consecutive cycles. Consequently, these spherical polymer brushes bearing imidazole groups are reasonable nickel remover for crude oil.

Microbial-enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is a promising technology for oilfield development. To improve MEOR efficiency, two functional strains—Bacillus mucilaginosus ZZ-8 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ZZ-11—were isolated and purified. The growth characteristics, biosurfactant production, and crude oil emulsification performance of these strains were systematically evaluated through single-strain cultures and a co-culture system (ZZ-8: ZZ-11 = 1:1). The results demonstrated that the co-culture system exhibited superior growth and functional performance compared to monocultures. The cell-free supernatant significantly reduced oil–water interfacial tension, decreasing the contact angle from 53.56 ± 1.3° to 28.78 ± 0.82°, thereby enhancing crude oil detachment from rock surfaces and improving oil displacement efficiency. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis further confirmed the co-culture system’s pronounced degradation of long-chain alkanes (C17–C35). In oil sand washing experiments, the 1:1 mixed-strain fermentation broth achieved a crude oil elution rate of 84.39%, representing an 89.80% increase over uninoculated medium. This study not only validates the synergistic effect of the B. mucilaginosus–B. amyloliquefaciens co-culture system in enhancing oil recovery but also provides a theoretical foundation and innovative strategy for its practical application in MEOR technology.

Crude oil spills in marine ecosystems have been a global environmental problem. Photothermal oil-adsorbing materials have shown enormous potential in cleaning up viscous crude oil spills, yet challenging to achieve efficient adsorption under insufficient light. Herein, a simple Pickering emulsion route was used to encapsulate phase change materials (PCMs) in photothermal cellulose-based aerogels (Pa@SCCA) for efficiently utilizing solar energy and remediating viscous crude oil spills. Pa@SCCA demonstrates excellent shape stability, thermal stability and importantly it shows outstanding hydrophobicity and compressibility due to methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) modification, thus enabling it to selectively adsorb and recover viscous crude oil. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was doped in the Pa@SCCA to allow the efficient conversion from solar energy to heat, and PCMs with thermal-storage ability can continuously reduce the viscosity of crude oil even under insufficient light by releasing thermal energy. Significantly, the preheated Pa@SCCA can remove viscous crude oil spills from cryogenic seawater (10 ℃) without light assistance. The introduction of PCMs improves overall solar energy utilization efficiency and the adsorption capacity for viscous crude oil under unstable light. The coupling of photothermal porous materials with PCMs offers significant advantages over conventional photothermal adsorbents.

The alkali-catalyzed alcoholysis of polyethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) was used to obtain the product ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL), and the grafting product poly(ethylene-vinyl alcohol)-graphene oxide (EVAL-GO) was prepared in the form of chemical grafting by utilization of the groups on the surface of GO and EVAL through the esterification reaction. The products were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Thermogravimetric (TG). The rheological properties of the oil sample and changes in the morphology of wax crystals were characterized by Advanced Hybrid Rheometer and polarized optical microscopy (POM) respectively. The degree of alcoholysis of EVAL reached 74.51%, and the grafting rate of EVAL-GO (0.5%) was 36.18%. Reduction of pour point and gel point of nanocomposite treated crude oil was 12 °C and 4 °C from undoped crude oil at the optimum additive concentration of 1000 mg/kg. Moreover, it decreased the viscosity and yield value of virgin crude oil by 99.5% and 78.3%, respectively. From the morphological analysis, it was indicated that EVAL-GO could make the wax crystals form sphere-like crystals, and the increased void space promoting more liquid oil to be released thus significantly improving the low-temperature fluidity of Daqing waxy crude oil.
