A low-cost, easily fabricated sodium alginate-nanoparticle coated paper membrane with superb oil-fouling resistance for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation

Chang Dai,Yun Li,Benkun Qi,Zhitao Li,Bin Wang,Fei Fang,Xuhuan Dai,Zhiheng Qin,Xiaopeng Qin,Yinhua Wan

The treatment of kitchen oily wastewater has often been neglected, despite its significant annual discharge and associated environmental risks. This study addresses the issue by developing a novel composite paper membrane, using A4 paper as a substrate coated with a simple and durable hydrogel composite of nanoparticles (SiO 2 or TiO 2 ) and sodium alginate. The optimal membrane preparation conditions were determined to be 0.6 wt% sodium alginate and 0.1 wt% nanoparticles, ensuring a stable and effective coating. Oil-in-water emulsions can be effectively separated by the resultant membrane, which exhibits superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties, with a water contact angle in air close to 14° and an oil contact angle in water close to 150°. According to experimental findings, adding nanoparticles improved the composite membrane's surface roughness and selective wettability. The membrane demonstrated outstanding oil removal efficiency for five types of oil-water emulsions (>95 %) and exhibited excellent reusability (over 15 cycles), without causing significant environmental concerns after prolonged use. This study introduces an inexpensive and eco-friendly hydrogel composite membrane that is easy to fabricate and demonstrates excellent emulsion separation capabilities, regeneration performance, and practical application potential. It is positioned as a viable material for treating oily wastewater because of these qualities.

Sulfonic nanohydrogelled surface-modified microporous polyvinylidene fluoride membrane with excellent antifouling performance for treating water-oil separation of kitchen wastewater

Yujia Tong,Chengjiang Zuo,Wenlong Ding,Suhang Jiang,Weixing Li,Weihong Xing

Kitchen wastewater containing high concentration of suspended solids, salt and oil is a comprehensive wastewater that requires urgent treatment. Organic fouling limits the use of membranes for treating kitchen wastewater. Herein, we propose a novel sulfonic nanohydrogel membrane with superhydrophilicity and underwater-superoleophobicity. A 32-nm-diameter sulfonic nanohydrogel Poly(SPP-co-MA-co-FLUORAL-P), developed by the polymerization technique in an aqueous medium, was grafted onto the polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membranes. The developed PVDF-g-Poly(SPP-co-MA-co-FLUORAL-P) membrane exhibited excellent antifouling properties for treating kitchen wastewater. The influence of organics (edible oil, surfactant , protein and humic acid) and salts on the membrane filtration was thoroughly investigated. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques were used to confirm the successful surface modification. The experimental results revealed that the pure water flux was 2161 L m −2  h −1 . A high oil rejection rate was achieved when the fabricated membrane was used for treating the simulated kitchen wastewater (˃99.7%). The excellent antifouling properties of the membrane significantly improved the circulation stability of the simulated kitchen wastewater filtration. The recovery rate of permeation flux was up to 100%. The chemical oxygen demand removal rate of the real kitchen wastewater was 61% and the flux recovery rate arrived at 98%. The PVDF-g-Poly(SPP-co-MA-co-FLUORAL-P) membrane can be potentially used for treating kitchen wastewater.

Catalytic ozonation in advanced treatment of kitchen wastewater: multi-scale simulation and pilot-scale study

Zhou Zuoyong,Yan Ni,Yin Mengxi,Ren Tengfei,Chen Shuning,Lu Kechao,Cao Xiaoxin,Huang Xia,Zhang Xiaoyuan

Catalytic ozonation is regarded as a promising technology in the advanced treatment of refractory organic wastewater. Packed-bed reactors are widely used in practical applications due to simple structures, installation and operation. However, mass transfer of packed-bed reactors is relatively restrained and amplified deviations usually occurred in scale-up application. Herein, a multi-scale packed-bed model of catalytic ozonation was established to guide pilot tests. First, a laboratory-scale test was conducted to obtain kinetic parameters needed for modeling. Then, a multi-scale packed-bed model was developed to research the effects of water distribution structure, catalyst particle size, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on catalytic ozonation. It was found that the performance of packed bed reactor was increased with evenly distributed water inlet, HRT of 60 min, and catalyst diameter of about 3–7 mm. Last, an optimized reactor was manufactured and a pilot-scale test was conducted to treat kitchen wastewater using catalytic ozonation process. In the pilot-scale test with an ozone dosage of 50 mg/L and HRT of 60 min, the packed-bed reactor filled with catalysts I was able to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) from 117 to 59 mg/L. The performance of the catalytic ozonation process in the packed-bed reactor for the advanced treatment of actual kitchen wastewater was investigated via both multi-scale simulation and pilot-scale tests in this study, which provided a practical method for optimizing the reactors of treating refractory organic wastewater.

Enhanced polyunsaturated fatty acid production using food wastes and biofuels byproducts by an evolved strain of Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Xiang Wang,Srinivasan Balamurugan,Si-Fen Liu,Man-Man Zhang,Wei-Dong Yang,Jie-Sheng Liu,Hong-Ye Li,Carol Sze Ki Lin

This study investigates the prospective of utilizing kitchen wastewater and food wastes, biofuels industry byproducts as alternative water and carbon sources. Kitchen wastewater did not impede cellular growth rate of the evolved Phaeodactylum strain E70, which indicates its potential as an alternative to freshwater resources. Among the organic wastes assessed, food waste hydrolysate significantly increased cell growth. Supplement of crude glycerol in cultivation medium enhances the total fatty acid content. Mixed food waste hydrolysate and crude glycerol remarkably increased both the cell density and total fatty acid content. Also, the supplement of butylated hydroxytoluene alleviated the oxidative stress induced by impurities in organic wastes and concomitantly increased microalgal total fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids content. The experimental results reported in this study show that a waste-based biorefinery could lead to utilization of organic waste resources for the efficient production of value-added products.
