Biomass as the only carbon-bearing renewable energy has enormous potential to challenge the established energy structure dominated by fossil resources, and incineration technology is one of the most direct and efficient pathways for utilizing biomass resources, unfortunately enduring the inevitable sintering and slagging problems owing to the excessive alkali metals. Herein, we comparatively investigated the effects of five leaching solvents (water, acetic acid, wood vinegar, hydrochloric acid, and oxalic acid) on the physicochemical properties and ash-removal capabilities of wheat straw (WS) and rice husk (RH), with a view to achieving better performance in the subsequent combustion characteristics, kinetic examination, flue gas, and slag evolution. Results indicated with ionization ability increased (water < acetic acid < hydrochloric acid), the WS exhibited a strong demineralization performance (maximum 61.1%), further leading to a steep weight loss in its combustion characteristic curve at approximately 350 °C and a delayed peak temperature after the removal of alkali metal. Multiple distributed activation energy model and sensitivity analysis revealed that leaching pretreatment enhanced the activation energy (189–191.8 kJ mol −1 ) and optimized energy distribution at the preliminary stage of the combustion reaction. In addition, the absence of alkali metals suppressed the catalytic oxidation reaction in the flue gas, remarkably limiting the formation of CO 2 but facilitating the release of CO and CH 4 . Meanwhile, a considerable optimal in biomass ash slagging, in which the initial temperature of the liquid phase slag for WS ash increased to 991 °C. Notably, HCl showed the strongest demineralization performance among the five leaching solvents during pretreatment, but the high-temperature slag content was still higher than that of acetic acid. Therefore, slagging performance is not only associated with the demineralization ability of leaching solvents, but also with ash composition.

Mantis shrimp waste (Oratosquilla oratoria) is a good source of chitin. The applicability of microwave-assisted organic acids and proteases for extracting chitin from mantis shrimp shell waste was evaluated, and the extracted-chitin was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover, the effects of nanochitin on the growth of pak choi ( Brassica campestris L.ssp.) were also investigated. The results indicated that alkaline protease (4000 U/g, microwave heating at 60 °C, 10 min) and malic acid (5%, 320 W, 5 min) exhibited excellent potential for deproteinizing and demineralizing shells. The deproteinization and demineralization yields were 92.78% and 94.11%, respectively, and the chitin yield was 15.6%. The extracted-chitin had a highly porous structure and exhibited excellent crystallinity and thermostability compared with chitin prepared by traditional chemical methods. Furthermore, 0.003% nanochitin significantly enhanced photosynthesis, which improved the pak choi fresh weight by 22.94%, and improved the accumulation of isothiocyanates in its leaves. This study provides an alternative approach for the high-value utilization of mantis shrimp waste, and reveals the potential of chitin for application in agricultural production.

Based on the assumption that protein could be removed by the combined mechanism of alkaline induced degradation and strong hydrogen bond interactions of deep eutectic solvents (DESs), β-chitins were successfully prepared from squid pens by using alkaline DESs formed by potassium carbonate and glycerol. The chemical structures of the DESs were investigated by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and molecular modeling , and the physicochemical property of the prepared β-chitins were characterized. The preparation yields was about 32 %, and DESs with K 2 CO 3 /glycerol of 1/10 could be reused for three times while maintaining high preparation yields (31 %–32 %) and degree of deacetylation of 66.9 %–76.9 %. The mechanisms of deproteinization and demineralization by the alkaline DESs were proposed to follow the degradation and dissolution steps, and proteins and minerals were removed from squid pens through the synergistic actions of alkaline degradation and hydrogen bonding interactions. This alkaline DESs are promising to be used as a green and efficient approach for commercial production of β-chitin.

Due to the lack of a precise in vitro model that can mimic the nature microenvironment in osteosarcoma, the understanding of its resistance to chemical drugs remains limited. Here, we report a novel three-dimensional model of osteosarcoma constructed by seeding tumor cells (MG-63 and MNNG/HOS Cl no. 5) within demineralized bone matrix scaffolds. Demineralized bone matrix scaffolds retain the original components of the natural bone matrix (hydroxyapatite and collagen type I), and possess good biocompatibility allowing osteosarcoma cells to proliferate and aggregate into clusters within the pores. Growing within the scaffold conferred elevated resistance to doxorubicin on MG-63 and MNNG/HOS Cl no. 5 cell lines as compared to two-dimensional cultures. Transcriptomic analysis showed an increased enrichment for drug resistance genes along with enhanced glutamine metabolism in osteosarcoma cells in demineralized bone matrix scaffolds. Inhibition of glutamine metabolism resulted in a decrease in drug resistance of osteosarcoma, which could be restored by α-ketoglutarate supplementation. Overall, our study suggests that microenvironmental cues in demineralized bone matrix scaffolds can enhance osteosarcoma drug responses and that targeting glutamine metabolism may be a strategy for treating osteosarcoma drug resistance. What's new? Osteosarcoma resistance to chemical drugs remains poorly understood. Here, the authors constructed a novel three-dimensional osteosarcoma model by seeding tumor cells within demineralized bone matrix scaffolds. Growing within the scaffold conferred elevated doxorubicin resistance to osteosarcoma cells when compared to two-dimensional cultures. Osteosarcoma cells in demineralized bone matrix scaffolds displayed an increased enrichment for drug resistance genes along with enhanced glutamine metabolism. This model could help better understand the complex cell–matrix interactions between osteosarcoma cells and surrounding native bone and potentially screen novel effective chemotherapies to treat osteosarcoma.
