Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology for water desalination, especially low-salinity water. Freestanding porous carbon-based electrodes with rapid electron transfer rate and effective ion diffusion features are desired to achieve high desalination performance. Here, a porous carbon pad derived from the fungal hyphae of Aspergillus niger was prepared as a precursor of the electrode. After carbonization and activation, the intertwined and hierarchical porous structure of the fungal hypha pad was well-preserved, producing a freestanding fungal hypha activated carbon pad (FhACPad) electrode for MCDI. The interconnected carbon fibers and open pore structure of the FhACPad yielded an electrode with high electrical conductivity and rapid ion transport properties. The novel FhACPad exhibited a gravimetric salt adsorption capacity of 35.6 ± 2.3 mg NaCl /g with an average desalination rate of 1.2 mg NaCl /g electrode /min from a 585 mg/L NaCl aqueous solution at a cell voltage of 1.2 V and a flow rate of 1 mL/min. As a result, the FhACPad outperformed conventional powdered activated carbon (PAC) electrodes and the most recently reported porous carbon electrodes under similar desalination conditions. This work also provides insights into the structure-performance relationships of CDI electrodes and shows a great potential of fungal biomass-derived porous carbon electrodes for high-performance MCDI applications.

Fe[Fe(CN)6] (FeHCF) is considered a promising material for capacitive deionization–desalination of saline wastewater due to its excellent structure. However, additives are usually introduced during the synthesis of FeHCF in order to avoid [Fe(CN)6]3– vacancy defects filled by ligand water, which can result in the appearance of harmful byproducts and additional water treatment costs. In this study, an additive-free in situ vacancy repair strategy is proposed for the rapid synthesis of high-quality FeHCF in a saturated K3Fe(CN)6 solution. During the process of synthesizing FeHCF in solution, a high concentration of [Fe(CN)6]3– is found to facilitate the binding of Fe3+ to [Fe(CN)6]3– and hinder the hydrolysis and coordination reaction of Fe3+. After undergoing repair, FeHCF4 demonstrates an increased capacity and highly reversible electrochemical performance due to the robust structure. When utilized as Faraday cathodes in hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) systems, FeHCF4 exhibits a higher salt removal capacity (65.67 mg g–1) and lower energy consumption (0.68 kWh kg–1-NaCl) compared to unrepaired FeHCF1, while still maintaining excellent cycling performance. This environmentally friendly approach of repairing vacancies serves as a source of inspiration for the advancement of high-performance Prussian Blue analogues as capacitive sodium-removing materials.

Carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes are widely used electrode materials in capacitive deionization (CDI) processes, while the limited electrosorption capacity and poor long-term stability need to improve. In this work, a pH-responsive block copolymer (BCP), poly (2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)- block -polystyrene (PDMAEMA -b- PS) is combined with the selective swelling to fabricate a CNT membrane based multipurpose electrode. After BCP coating and selective swelling, the PDMAEMA blocks migrate onto the membrane surface and protonate during the CDI processes, which enhance the attraction between electrode and anions. Therefore, the BCP coated electrodes can be used as high performance anodes in the hybrid CDI (HCDI) module. Experiment results show that the initial solution pH values have significant influence on the CDI performance of the HCDI module. The maximum removal efficiencies of the HCDI module towards NaCl and NaH 2 PO 4 are ~15 mg·g −1 and ~38.7 mg·g −1 , respectively. Moreover, the chemical and mechanical stabilities of the anodes are significantly enhanced. No anode oxidation can be observed during CDI processes and the frequently occurred co-ion repulsion effect is suppressed. Considering these advantages, the combination of BCPs and selective swelling will be a promising candidate for the development of HCDI module.

Rational design of high-performance electrode materials is crucial for enhancing desalination performance of capacitive deionization (CDI). Here, ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon/Ti 3 C 2 T x -TiN (NC/MX-TiN) heterostructure was developed by pyrolyzing zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles sandwiched MXene (ZSM), which were formed by assembling ultrafine ZIF-8 nanoparticles with size of 20 nm on both sides of MXene nanosheets. The introduction of ultrasmall ZIF-8 particles allowed for in situ nitridation of the MXene during pyrolysis, forming consecutive TiN layers tightly connected to the internal MXene. The two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure exhibited remarkable properties, including high specific surface area and excellent conductivity. Additionally, the resulting TiN demonstrated exceptional redox capability, which significantly enhanced the performance of CDI and ensured cycling stability. Benefiting from these advantages, the NC/MX-TiN exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 45.6 mg g −1 and a steady cycling performance in oxygenated saline water over 50 cycles. This work explores the rational design and construction of MXene-based 2D heterostructure and broadens new horizons for the development of novel CDI electrode materials.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a newly developed desalination technology with low energy consumption and environmental friendliness. The surface area restricts the desalination capacities of traditional carbon-based CDI electrodes while battery materials emerge as CDI electrodes with high performances due to the larger electrochemical capacities, but suffer limited production of materials. LiMn2O4is a massively-produced lithium-ion battery material with a stable spinel structure and a high theoretical specific capacity of 148 mAh·g−1, revealing a promising candidate for CDI electrode. Herein, we employed spinel LiMn2O4as the cathode and activated carbon as the anode in the CDI cell with an anion exchange membrane to limit the movement of cations, thus, the lithium ions released from LiMn2O4would attract the chloride ions and trigger the desalination process of the other side of the membrane. An ultrahigh deionization capacity of 159.49 mg·g−1was obtained at 1.0 V with an initial salinity of 20 mM. The desalination capacity of the CDI cell at 1.0 V with 10 mM initial NaCl concentration was 91.04 mg·g−1, higher than that of the system with only carbon electrodes with and without the ion exchange membrane (39.88 mg·g−1and 7.84 mg·g−1, respectively). In addition, the desalination results and mechanisms were further verified with the simulation of COMSOL Multiphysics. Keywords:capacitive deionization;LiMn2O4;lithium ion;desalination capacity;simulation

Capacitive deionization (CDI) emerges as a favorable technology for desalinating seawater and brackish water. Developing electrodes with high desalination capacity and prolonged lifespan is a crucial approach to advancing current CDI applications. In this study, we propose a strategy that utilizes porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) as the structural scaffold, which are characterized by high specific surface area and excellent conductivity. Furthermore, by further decorating with NiMn-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets, we fabricate a three-dimensional network-like hierarchical structure (PCNiMn-LDH) as the anode for hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI). It is noteworthy that the PCNFs, serving as the structural scaffold, effectively prevent the aggregation among LDH nanosheets, while the NiMn-LDH nanosheets contribute to superior pseudocapacitance. The electrochemical assessment reveals that the PCNi 1 Mn 1 -LDH electrode attains a high specific capacitance of 173.5 F g −1 . Under a voltage of 1.2 V, the HCDI system based on the self-supporting PCNi 1 Mn 1 -LDH membrane exhibits significant salt removal capacity (123.16 mg g −1 ), excellent desalination rate (14.84 mg g −1 min −1 ), and acceptable cycling stability. Additionally, the HCDI device demonstrates remarkable electro-adsorption capacity for most ions in the reclaimed water from printing and dyeing industries, indicating its promising practical prospects.

Common methods in capacitive deionization (CDI) for selective removal are derived from membrane separation mechanism or size-based intercalation mechanism. In this study, based on the electrochemical activity of bismuth (Bi) material to chloride ions (Cl − ) and inertness to sulfate ions (SO 4 2− ), Bi electrode is used as anode in CDI to selectively remove Cl − ions from mixed NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 solution. Through the reaction with Bi, Cl − ions are stored in bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl). Results show that Bi electrode exhibits selectivity for Cl − over SO 4 2− with a selectivity coefficient of more than 1.5 in solutions with mole ratio of Cl − to SO 4 2− larger than 1. The selectivity coefficient is greatly dependent on the mole ratio of Cl − to SO 4 2− and increases when the ratio rises. In solution with a fixed Cl − /SO 4 2− mole ratio, higher applied voltage and prolonged time result in higher Cl − ion removal capacity, but not necessarily better selectivity. The highest selectivity coefficient of 4.5 is achieved in 8.5 mM NaCl and 1.1 mM Na 2 SO 4 mixed solution at voltage of 1.6 and 2.0 V after charging for 1 h. These results demonstrate that Bi electrode can selectively remove Cl − ions from mixed solution with a relatively lower concentration of SO 4 2− ions, which provides new insights into ion separation and selective removal by CDI.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered transition-metal carbides (MXenes) are attractive faradic materials for an efficient capacitive deionization (CDI) process owing to their high capacitance, excellent conductivity, and remarkable ion storage capacity. However, the easy restacking property and spontaneous oxidation in solution by the dissolved oxygen of MXenes greatly restrict their further application in the CDI domain. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) heterostructure (MoS2@MXene) is rationally designed and constructed, integrating the collective advantages of MXene flakes and MoS2 nanosheets through the hydrothermal method. In such a design, the well-dispersed MXene flakes can effectively reduce the aggregation of MoS2 nanosheets, boost electrical conductivity, and provide efficient charge transfer paths. Furthermore, MoS2 nanosheets as the high-capacity interlayer spacer can prevent the self-restacking of MXene flakes and provide more active sites for ion intercalation. Meanwhile, the strong chemical interactions between MXene flakes and MoS2 nanosheets contribute to accelerating the charge transfer kinetics and enhancing structural stability. Consequently, the resulting MoS2@MXene heterostructure electrode possesses high specific capacitance (171.4 F g–1), fast charge transfer and permeation rate, abundant Na+ diffusion channels, and superior electrochemical stability. Moreover, the hybrid CDI cell (AC//MoS2@MXene) with AC as the anode and MoS2@MXene as the cathode delivers outstanding desalination capacity (35.6 mg g–1), rapid desalination rate (2.6 mg g–1 min–1), excellent charge efficiency (90.2%), and good cyclic stability (96% retention rate). Most importantly, the MoS2@MXene electrode can keep good structural integrity after the long-term repeated desalination process due to the effective shielding effect of the MoS2 layer to protect MXenes from being further oxidized. This work presents the flexible structural engineering to realize excellent ion transfer and storage process by constructing the 3D heterostructure.

In this study, carbon aerogels (CAs) were synthesized by the sol-gel method, using environmentally friendly glucose as a precursor, and then they were further activated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to obtain activated carbon aerogels (ACAs). After the activation, the electrochemical performance of the ACAs was significantly improved, and the specific capacitance increased from 19.70 F·g−1to 111.89 F·g−1. Moreover, the ACAs showed a stronger hydrophilicity with the contact angle of 118.54° compared with CAs (69.31°). When used as an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), the ACAs had not only a better diffuse electric double layer behavior, but also a lower charge transfer resistance and intrinsic resistance. Thus, the ACA electrode had a faster CDI desalination rate and a higher desalination capacity. The unit adsorption capacity is three times larger than that of the CA electrode. In the desalination experiment of 100 mg·L−1sodium chloride (NaCl) solution using a CDI device based on the ACA electrode, the optimal electrode spacing was 2 mm, the voltage was 1.4 V, and the flow rate was 30 mL·min−1. When the NaCl concentration was 500 mg·L−1, the unit adsorption capacity of the ACA electrode reached 26.12 mg·g−1, much higher than that which has been reported in many literatures. The desalination process followed the Langmuir model, and the electro-sorption of the NaCl was a single layer adsorption process. In addition, the ACA electrode exhibited a good regeneration performance and cycle stability. Keywords:carbon aerogel;activation;capacitive deionization;desalination;electro-sorption

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is perceived as a promising technology for freshwater production owing to its environmentally friendly nature and low energy consumption. To date, the development of high-performance electrode materials represents the foremost challenge for CDI technology. In this work, the porous bismuthene/MXene (P-Bi-ene/MXene) heterostructure was synthesized using a simple interfacial self-assembly method with two-dimensional (2D) bismuthene and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene . Within the P-Bi-ene/MXene heterostructure, the porous structure can increase the active site and facilitate ion transport. Simultaneously, MXene effectively enhances the conductivity of the heterostructure, resulting in accelerating electron transport. Due to these attributes, the P-Bi-ene/MXene heterostructure demonstrates high desalination capacity (90.0 mg/g), fast desalination rate, and good cycling performance. The simple self-assembly strategy between 2D/2D materials described herein may offer inspirations for the synthesis of innovative electrode materials with high performance.

Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) holds great promise for next-generation desalination, yet its advancement is fundamentally constrained by sluggish electron conduction and poor ion selectivity under multivalent interference. Herein, we conceive a semi-anchoring strategy that covalently binds polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) onto ultra-microporous carbon nanospheres (UCNs), constructing a UCNs@PILs composite featuring an ion-selective charge percolation network. This design unlocks dual-functionality: it not only enhances electron mobility via continuous conductive pathways, but also enables sodium-preferred transport through a synergistic “push-pull” effect, as revealed by DFT and COMSOL simulations. Strikingly, this strategy allows the carbon slurry loading to be reduced from the conventional 5-15 wt% [1] to just 3.33 wt% without conductive additives, approaching the lowest value ever reported in FCDI. As a result, the system delivers a 28.00 % increase in desalination efficiency, an 18.26 % reduction in energy consumption, and a 39.40 % enhancement in ion selectivity, while its ion selectivity matches that of state-of-the-art carbon-based materials. This work not only overcomes electron conduction discontinuity and ion transport limitations, but also establishes the semi-anchoring framework for achieving ultra-low percolation thresholds with high ion selectivity, offering a new paradigm for the scalable design of advanced FCDI electrodes.

Alkaline-earth metal-based MOF has many merits such as light weight, environmental friendliness and low cost, but it has rarely been used in energy storage and capacitive deionization (CDI). This paper presents a facile method for the fast synthesis of small-size magnesium formate MOF (Mg-MOF) under mild conditions by linker-free incubation in the presence of Mg(CH 3 COO) 2 ⋅ 4H 2 O and dimethylformamide. The formic acid was in situ formed as ligand to facilitate the formation of Mg-MOF. The effect of incubation time on the morphology of MOF crystals was investigated. The small and well-defined Mg-MOF particles with the size of ~ 18 nm were formed in 1 h incubation, characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Following carbonization, the Mg-MOF-derived mesoporous carbon was obtained. N 2 -sorption isotherm confirmed the mesoporous structure. Cyclic voltammetry test indicated the good electric double-layer feature of the Mg-MOF-derived carbon electrode, and the impedance results showed the excellent conductivity. As a capacitor electrode material, it delivered the specific capacitances of 102 F/g by GCD (0.2 A/g). The Mg-MOF-derived carbon electrode was applied successfully for capacitive deionization (CDI) with a desalination capacity of 8.0 mg/g in a CDI device. A supper fast desalination rate of 1.1 mg/g/min was achieved due to the abundant mesoporous structure. The work provides a cost effective and environmentally friendly way for the synthesis of MOF-based carbon materials free of transition metal, and the prospects for CDI application have been demonstrated.
