ZnO-Reinforced Thermal Regulating Microcapsules with Double-Layer Shell via Atomic Layer Deposition

Linfeng Li,Xi Wu,Xiaomeng Zhu,Yuanyuan Li,Liyi Zou,Xiuli Wang,Wenbin Li,Xiaomin Cheng

Conventional plain organic or inorganic shell for microcapsules has their own drawbacks, the organic shell has defects in thermal conductivity and stability; while the compactness and coverage of inorganic shell are not satisfactory. Herein, a novel approach to synthesis of organic–inorganic composite double-layer shell phase change microcapsule (DLSPCM) is proposed, which is achieved by forming inorganic outer shell on the surface of organic shell via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Taking the pristine microcapsule with paraffin core and melamine formaldehyde (MF) shell as an example, MF-ZnO composite double-layer shell (DLS) is formed in this paper. The melting enthalpy of DLSPCM obtained by 100 ALD cycles is 159.7 J g −1 , which is only 12.1 J g −1 lower than that of paraffin @ MF microcapsules (control sample), while the thermal conductivity of DLSPCM surges by 77.8%, and the thermal energy storage ability and thermal regulation performance are basically maintained. After 900 thermal cycles, the heat storage capacity of DLSPCM obtained by 100 ALD cycles decreased by only 3%. Besides, the photocatalytic performance and antibacterial activity of ZnO-reinforced DLSPCM are further confirmed. The successful design of DLSPCM via ALD is prospective for the encapsulation, modification, and reinforcement of phase change microcapsules.

Fabrication of hollow microneedles with double-layer shell structure for rapid and prolonged local anesthesia

Yanan Mao,Rui Yao,Xiufeng Zhang,Chao Zhong,Khaydar E. Yunusov,Zhong Shen,Jianwei Pan,Guohua Jiang

Pain is a subjective sensation associated with actual or potential tissue damage, presenting a global clinical challenge that not only significantly impacts individuals' quality of life, but also incurs substantial economic burdens. In this study, polymer microneedles (MNs) with hollow double-layer shell structure had been designed for local long-lasting analgesia. The hollow and inner-shell layer were formed by a microtemplate method under vacuum and UV cross-linking. The formed cavities in MNs could be utilized for loading lidocaine hydrochloride (LidH) powder to increase the drug loading capacity. The outer-shell layer formed a frozen dip-coating process was composed of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), citric acid (CA), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ), and small amount of LidH. After insertion into skin, the outermost shell of MNs could been rapidly dissolved, leading to a rapid release of LidH to achieve a rapid analgesia. Subsequently, the LidH loaded within the cavity could be continuously released due to swelling of the inner shell, thereby to obtain long-term analgesic effect. In vivo local analgesic tests reveled that local analgesic time could be extended up to 48 h, showing a potential possibility to reduce administration frequency and improve patient comfort.

Preparation and properties of double-layer phenolic/polyurethane coated isophorone diisocyanate self-healing microcapsules

Yuan Liye,Zhi Jieying,Wang Congwei,Wang Junwei,Cao Lijuan,Yang Yu,Zhao Guojing,Lu Chunxiang,Lu Xiaoxuan

Single-layer isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) are one of the most popular self-healing microcapsules but suffers from low shell strength, poor heat resistance, stability and aging properties. In this paper, IPDI microcapsules were encapsulated into double-layer phenolic (PF)/polyurethane (PU) by a two-step process involving interfacial polymerization and in-situ polymerization. The prepared microcapsule composites were comprehensively characterized for their physical and chemical properties using optical microanalysis, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and depth-sensing indentation analysis. Compared with the single-layer PU-IPDI microcapsule counterpart, the mechanical performance, thermal resistance, aging property and environmental stability of double-layer PF/PU-IPDI microcapsules were significantly improved. The epoxy coating was enhanced with the incorporation of 10 wt.% PF/PU-IPDI microcapsules, whose self-healing performance was evaluated by scratch corrosion test. The results demonstrated successful repair of coating scratches, along with the absence of corrosion on the coated steel substrate soaked in a 10 wt.% NaCl solution for 7 days. By comparing the tensile strength of epoxy coating before and after crack formation, it could be found that the self-healing efficiency was 57.9% when loaded with 10 wt.% of PF/PU-IPDI microcapsules in coating. This study highlights that the rational design of double-layer microcapsules integrated into the epoxy coating matrix could provide excellent anti-corrosion and self-healing properties.

Encapsulated phase change materials stabilized by modified graphene oxide

Yi Zhang,Xianhua Zheng,Haitao Wang,Qiangguo Du

The microencapsulation of phase change materials (n-hexadecane) with double-walled shells (polystyrene/graphene oxide) was realized from Pickering emulsion templating. Graphene oxide nanosheets were modified by the polycondensate of diethanolamine and adipic acid, which can well stabilize oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions. The morphology of the double-walled shell of polymer microspheres was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal and barrier properties of microcapsules were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and the flammability test. DSC results indicate that the encapsulation ratio of n-hexadecane is as high as 78%. The encapsulated phase change material has good thermal stability, owing to the existence of graphene oxide on the surface protecting the core material from leakage and evaporation. This double-walled microencapsulation of phase change materials may have potential applications in energy storage and energy saving.

Carbon nanotube-enhanced double-walled phase-change microcapsules for thermal energy storage

Yi-Tian Huang,He Zhang,Xue-Juan Wan,Da-Zhu Chen,Xue-Fei Chen,Xing Ye,Xing Ouyang,Si-Yin Qin,Hai-Xia Wen,Jiao-Ning Tang

The shell composition and microstructure of microencapsulated phase-change materials (MPCMs) are of vital significance for achieving high thermal and mechanical properties. Herein, a new type of MPCM with double-walled shells (melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin/carbon nanotube (CNT)-poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) sodium (PSS)) was developed through a facile layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique using prefabricated MF resin-encapsulated n-octadecane as the template. The CNTs were well dispersed and highly interconnected in the shell, which greatly enhanced the temperature response and thermal stability of MPCMs. Furthermore, the incorporation of 3.34 wt% CNTs resulted in an average hardness and Young's modulus of MPCMs, respectively, 3.3 and 1.3 times greater than those of microcapsules without CNTs. The double-walled MPCMs exhibited good potential for application in the field of thermal energy storage.

Simultaneous construction of impermeable dual-shell stabilizing fluoride phosphors for white light-emitting diodes

Peilan Luo,Menglin Ye,Wenli Zhou,Pingping Wan,Zhongyun Ma,Zhongxian Qiu,Jilin Zhang,Ru-Shi Liu,Shixun Lian

The traditional strategy to improve material stability is to cover the surface with a shell to resist adverse environmental factors. For the red-emitting fluoride materials with easily hydrolyzed Mn 4+ on the surface, many strategies have been reported with limited effectiveness. In this work, simultaneous construction of an impermeable dual-shell on Mn 4+ -doped fluoride is proposed to solve the instability problem by a simple pyruvic acid (PA) treatment. The internal quantum efficiency of the K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ with dual-shell can be optimized up to 99.71%, the photoluminescence intensity can maintain 88.5% of the original intensity after soaking in water for 360 h, and the body color is not changed even in boiling. The reduction effect of the PA solution builds a hard fluoride shell by removal of the surface Mn 4+ , and the hydrogen bonding effect of PA molecular leads to the formation of a soft organic shell. The dual-shell can effectively block the damage of fluoride by external water molecules and achieve a significant improvement in water stability. The dual effect of PA is derived from its special molecular structure containing α -ketone carbonyl and carboxyl groups. This hypothesis is supported by the results of the moisture resistance of fluoride-treated with a variety of solvents similar in molecular structure to PA. In addition, DFT calculations simulated various hydrogen bond structures that may be formed between PA molecules and fluoride surface atoms.

Innovative Integration of Phase-Change Microcapsules with Metal–Organic Frameworks into an Intelligent Biosensing System for Enhancing Dopamine Detection

Jingjing Li,Jinghua Yu,Zhao Sun,Huan Liu,Xiaodong Wang

This work focuses on an interdisciplinary issue in energy management and biosensing techniques. Aiming at enhancing the biosensing detection of dopamine at high ambient temperatures, we developed an innovative integration of phase-change microcapsules with a metal–organic framework (MOF) based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 to develop an intelligent electrochemical biosensing system with a thermal self-regulation function. We first fabricated a type of electroactive microcapsules containing a MOF-anchored polypyrrole/SiO2 double-layered shell and a phase-change material (PCM) core. The resultant microcapsules not only exhibit a regular spherical morphology with a layer-by-layer core–shell microstructure but also display an effective temperature-regulation capability to enhance enzymatic bioactivity under phase-change enthalpies of around 124.0 J·g–1 along with good thermal impact resistance and excellent thermal cycling stability for long-term use in thermal energy management. These electroactive microcapsules were then used to modify a working electrode together with laccase as a biocatalyst to construct a thermal self-regulatory biosensor. With a high sensitivity of 3.541 μA·L·μmol–1·cm–2 and a low detection limit of 0.0069 μmol·L–1 at 50 °C, this biosensor exhibits much better determination effectiveness toward dopamine at higher temperatures than conventional biosensors thanks to in situ thermal management derived from its PCM core in the electroactive microcapsules. This study offers a promising approach for development of intelligent thermal self-regulatory biosensors with an enhanced detection capability to identify various chemicals accurately in a wide range of applicable temperatures.

Chitosan-based bilayer shell phase change nano-capsules with excellent anti-permeability for thermal regulation dressings

Xudong Xu,Shuai Yin,Xinyu Zhai,Zide Wu,Jinlong Wang,Jiangfeng Ma,Xiaotian Peng,Hao Peng

Nano-encapsulated phase change materials (NEPCMs) with appropriate phase change temperature range and excellent anti-permeability have significant application value in the field of thermal regulation dressings. In this study, NEPCMs were synthesized using the microemulsion polymerization method, with eutectic fatty acids (LA-SA) as the core material and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the shell material. Subsequently, using the electrostatic adsorption method, chitosan (CS) was successfully coated onto the outer surface of NEPCMs, resulting in the preparation of a novel bilayer shell nano-encapsulated phase change materials (BS-NEPCMs) for thermal regulation dressings. The impact of core/shell ratio, CS acid solution concentration and cross-linking agent content on capsule properties was investigated. It was found that BS-NEPCMs exhibited excellent cyclical stability and thermal stability. In particular, the CS shell layer provided excellent interfacial impermeability effects for the capsules, achieving an anti-permeability efficiency of 96.21 %. This not only helps address the problem of high leakage rates in single wall capsules, but also ensures that the capsules maintain high phase change enthalpies of 99.32 J/g and 96.38 J/g, respectively. The dressings based on BS-NEPCMs demonstrated good thermal regulation at 33–42 °C with maximum phase change enthalpies of 39.53 J/g and 34.08 J/g, respectively. Swelling and rheological analysis showed that the dressing exhibits a gel state, with a swelling ratio of 343 %, an elastic modulus of 15 kPa and a viscous modulus of 4 kPa. This study indicated that BS-NEPCMs hold significant promise for various applications in energy storage and body thermal regulation fields.
