To improve the survivability of probiotics under the harsh conditions, a novel double-layered vehicle, which was developed by a one-step coaxial electrospinning procedure, was here used to encapsulate the probiotics. The morphology characterization analysis revealed that the electrospun fiber had a beaded morphology and core-shell structure. Probiotic cells were successfully encapsulated in the fibers (10 7 CFU/mg) and exhibited an oriented distribution along the fiber. Additionally, the encapsulation of core-shell fiber mat enhanced the tolerance of probiotic cells to simulated gastrointestinal conditions and no significant loss of viability was found (p > 0.05). Besides that, the encapsulated cells exhibited better thermal stability under heat moisture treatment, lower loss of viability (0.32 log CFU/mL) was occurred when compared with the free cells or encapsulated cells in uniaxial fiber mat. In conclusion, this double-layered vehicle presents a great potential in probiotic encapsulation and improving their resistant ability to the harsh conditions.
To obtain a rapid processible LED encapsulant that leads to high and stable light extraction efficiency (LEE), UV curable ZrO2/phenyl-siloxane nano-composite (ZSC) double-layer encapsulants were prepared and optimized. The highly crystalline ZrO2 nanoparticles with a diameter of ∼14 nm were synthesized through a modified hydrothermal method at mild conditions, and a UV curable methacryl-diphenyl-polysiloxane (MDPS) with a refractive index (RI) of 1.54 (at 633 nm) was synthesized from self-condensation of diphenylsilanediol and an end-capping reaction. High refractive indexes (RIs) from 1.54–1.61 have been obtained for ZSC composites by adding 0–20 wt% ZrO2. Before and after sulfur vapor erosion, the double-layer encapsulated sample (M-10/M) showed 11.2% and 64.8% higher LEE respectively than that of Dow Corning OE-7662. Meanwhile, the variation of LED light color temperature (Tc) was less than 1%. The effect of the ZrO2 nanoparticle content on LEE of double-layer and single-layer encapsulation were compared and discussed based on Fresnel loss and Rayleigh scattering theories. The double-layered UV curing processing took only 1/6 of the time needed for common thermal curing.
Addressing critical issues such as high-temperature corrosion, leakage, degradation, and subpar cyclic performance is imperative for phase change materials (PCMs), prompting the development of appropriate encapsulation techniques to surmount these challenges. In this study, a dual encapsulation strategy is proposed for high-temperature micro PCM particles. Al–Si core is microencapsulated via the “solvent evaporation-heating curing” method. Subsequently, TiO 2 is employed as the skeleton material for form-stable encapsulation of PCM microcapsules by “cold pressed sintering”. Detailed analysis of the crystalline phase transformation mechanism in the sintering synthesis pathway of TiO 2 underscore its potential as a robust structural material with exceptional thermal stability. Furthermore, the incorporation of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) results in a substantial enhancement of the thermal conductivity of the composites, increasing by 121.1–131.3%. The prepared form-stable phase change microcapsules (FSPCMs) are subjected to 5000 thermal cycles in the air atmosphere. There is no observed PCM leakage or composite ruptures in the FSPCM. Moreover, the oxidized mass gain is merely 3.3%, signifying exceptional oxidation resistance. Thermophysical analysis indicates that FSPCM can retain 91.3% of the enthalpy after 2000 cycles, with over 80% preservation after 5000 cycles, underscoring its remarkable cyclic thermal durability.
