Bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) efficiently transforms salts into acids and bases, with bipolar membranes (BPMs) playing a pivotal role. This study pioneers high-performance BPMs via a layer-by-layer casting/spraying technique, incorporating sulfonated polysulfone cation-exchange layers, polydopamine-modified MXene (PDA-Ti 3 C 2 T X ) interfacial layers, and quaternized polyphenylene oxide anion-exchange layers. PDA-Ti 3 C 2 T X exhibits remarkable catalytic activity, promoting water dissociation. The BPMs exhibit exceptional interfacial compatibility, alkali resistance, and long-term durability. At 80 mA · cm −2 , the BPMs manifest reduced transmembrane voltages (1.54 ∼ 2.80 V) compared to control samples (Blank BPM: 7.70 V; 0.75 %-Ti 3 C 2 T X -BPM: 5.51 V). Post-BMED salt conversion, the 1.00 %-PDA-Ti 3 C 2 T X -BPM displays the lowest final voltage drop (9.9 V), akin to the commercial SSBP-1 (9.8 V). The 0.75 %-PDA-Ti 3 C 2 T X -BPM attains the highest OH – concentration (0.094 mol·L -1 ) and current efficiency (98.79 %), surpassing SSBP-1 (0.090 mol·L -1 , 94.47 %). The BPMs demonstrate superior energy consumption (2.00 ∼ 2.49 kWh kg −1 ) compared to SSBP-1 (2.94 kWh kg −1 ). This investigation delineates efficient and stable BPMs for BMED applications.

The feasibility of using electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM), combined with monovalent selective anion exchange membranes was investigated to purify organic acids from fermentation broths or wastewater streams. A simulated beet molasses feed containing a mixture of monobasic lactic acid and polybasic citric acid was used for this purpose. The impact of the feed pH, the configuration of the membrane stack and the voltage applied on the selectivity of the process was investigated. At a pH of 9–10 and an electric field intensity of 9 V/cm, a lactic acid product with a purity of at least 97% can be obtained by using both two chamber (BP-A) and three chamber (BP-A-C) configurations with the monovalent selective membrane. When using the BP-A configuration, the hydroxide ions generated by the bipolar membrane compete with the lactate anions to move into the acid solution and so the energy efficiency is lower than with the BP-A-C configuration. To mimic a multiple pass process and increase the lactic acid concentration of the final product, experiments were performed across a range of volume ratios between the feed and acid solutions. As this ratio is varied, the purity of lactic acid produced remains higher than 95% while the energy consumption is essentially unaffected. Due to the osmotic flow of water during experiments, the highest lactic acid concentration that can be achieved is limited to 153 g/L at a volume ratio (V A : V F ) of 1:10.

Bipolar membranes (BPMs), composed of anion exchange membrane (AEM) and cation exchange membrane (CEM), hold promise for energy and environmental applications due to their ability to dissociate water into H + and OH − under reverse bias. However, their practical voltage requirements often exceed theoretical potentials, necessitating efficiency optimization. This study introduces an innovative BPM design integrating alginate (SA)-based CEM with chitosan AEM, enhanced by polydopamine-coated halloysite nanotubes (DHNTs) loaded with phosphotungstic acid (HPW). The tubular structure of the DHNTs, modified via dopamine polymerization, improved mechanical stability and proton conductivity, while HPW coating (optimized at 10 wt %) facilitated acid-base interactions, reducing proton hopping distances. Comprehensive characterization (SEM, FTIR, XPS, TGA) confirmed successful HPW coating and structural modification. The optimized BPM exhibited enhanced tensile strength than unmodified BPM with proton conductivity of 36.56 mS/cm and low water dissociation overpotential of 1.188 V at 70 mA/cm 2 . Electrodialysis tests revealed reduced interfacial resistance (IR drop) and increased stability over 48 h, attributed to HPW's catalytic role in accelerating ion transport and minimizing energy loss. The synergy between DHNTs and HPW significantly improved hydrophilicity, mechanical robustness, and energy efficiency, demonstrating the potential of this design for sustainable electrochemical systems. These findings provide critical insights into advanced BPM development for scalable energy and environmental technologies.

The main key component in bipolar membranes (BPMs) is the interfacial layer (IL), which is responsible for the water splitting. In this work, a most studied MXene Ti 3 C 2 T x and a modified Ti 3 C 2 T x (PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) were investigated as the catalysts in ILs of BPMs. BPMs with Ti 3 C 2 T x /PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x were prepared through the layer-by-layer casting/spraying method. The resulting BPMs were assessed through morphologies, thermal stability, alkali resistance performance, current-voltage (I-V) curves and water splitting performance in the bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED). Results show that the as-prepared BPMs exhibited excellent adhesion between layers, good thermal stability and alkali resistance performance. I-V curves showed that the voltage of the BPM with the PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x addition content of 0.5% (BPM-PANI-Ti 3 C 2 T x -0.5%, ~7.0 V) at the current density of 80 mA·cm -2 was only half of that of the blank sample BPM-0 without any catalysts (~14.1 V). After the BMED operation, the final OH - concentration increment in the base chamber (∆ C OH ) and the energy consumption of the BPM-Ti 3 C 2 T x -1.0% membrane (0.089 mol·L -1 , 0.58 kWh·mol -1 ) were ~7% higher and ~29% lower than those of BPM-0 (0.083 mol·L -1 , 0.82 kWh·mol -1 ), respectively; BPM-Ti 3 C 2 T x -1.0% (0.089 mol·L -1 , 95%) showed a higher final ∆ C OH and current efficiency than the commercial membrane BP-1 (0.087 mol·L -1 , 93%), but a higher energy consumption (0.58 kWh·mol -1 ) than BP-1 (0.33 kWh·mol -1 ). This study suggests that MXenes have the advanced catalytic effect on water splitting occurs in ILs of BPMs.

Hypophosphorous acid (H3PO2) is an important chemical product with wide applications in pharmaceuticals and electroless plating. In this study, bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) was used to produce H3PO2 from sodium hypophosphite salt (NaH2PO2) to replace the traditional preparation methods. The BMED process was optimized in terms of current density, NaH2PO2 salt concentration, and initial NaOH concentration of the base solution. The results indicated that low Na+ leakage occurred at lower salt concentrations. Under the optimum conditions, such a BMED system obtained a high concentration of H3PO2, a low Na+ content, and a low energy consumption, equaling to 1.03 mol/L, 670 ppm, and 1.18 kW h/kg, respectively. To minimize the amount of phosphorous acid (H3PO3) generated from H3PO2 oxidation during the BMED process, a nitrogen aeration operation was applied in both the acid and salt chambers, decreasing the HPO32– content to 251 ppm, which was 44.1% lower than that without a dissolved oxygen content control strategy. The newly produced H3PO3 during the BMED process was reduced by 96.5%. The obtained results indicated that the BMED process has great potential for application in the production of high-quality H3PO2 from NaH2PO2 in industry.

Electrochemical oxidation has been demonstrated to be a useful method for removing biorefractory organic pollutants in mature landfill leachate but suffers from low efficiency in eliminating ammonium because of its resistance to being oxidized by HO• or free chlorine (FC) at decreased pH. Here, we propose a new bipolar membrane-electrochlorination (BPM-EC) process to address this issue. We found that the BPM-EC system was significantly superior to both the undivided and divided reactors with monopolar membranes in terms of elevated rate of ammonium removal, attenuated generation of byproducts (e.g., nitrate and chloramines), increased Faradaic efficiency, and decreased energy consumption. Mechanistic studies revealed that the integration of BPM was helpful in creating alkaline environments in the vicinity of the anode, which facilitated production of surface-bound HO• and FC and eventually promoted in situ generation of ClO•, a crucial reactive species mainly responsible for accelerating ammonium oxidation and selective transformation to nitrogen. The efficacy of BPM-EC in treating landfill leachates with different ammonium concentrations was verified under batch and continuous-flow conditions. A kinetic model that incorporates the key parameters was developed, which can successfully predict the optimal number of BPM-EC reactors (e.g., 2 and 5 for leachates containing 589.4 ± 5.5 and 1258.1 ± 9.6 mg L–1 NH4+-N, respectively) necessary for complete removal of ammonium. These findings reveal that the BPM-EC process shows promise in treating ammonium-containing wastewater, with advantages that include effectiveness, adaptability, and flexibility.

Sulfanilic acid (SA) is an important organic compound with numerous applications in industrial production, while the organic wastewater with high salinity is inevitably generated. In this work, desalination strategy of hypersaline SA wastewater was proposed by using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED), which can realize the separation of SA and NaCl in wastewater and the conversion of NaCl into HCl and NaOH simultaneously. The influences of current density, initial concentrations of acid, base, SA and salt were investigated. The results showed that current efficiency decreased and energy consumption increased with an increase in current density. Higher initial concentrations of acid and base were favor to reduce energy consumption but current efficiency was low. At the current density of 40 mA/cm 2 , the initial acid and base concentrations of 0.10 mol/L, the highest concentrations of HCl and NaOH with initial salt concentration in the simulated feed solution of 80 g/L NaCl was 1.17 mol/L and 1.18 mol/L, respectively. Moreover, the total process cost of BMED process was estimated at $1.68/kg HCl and $1.52/kg NaOH respectively under the optimal experimental conditions. These findings confirmed that BMED may be an alternative and cost-effective strategy for treating high salinity SA wastewater.

Bipolar membrane processes have evolved as one of the most promising technologies in the field of acid and base production as well as many interesting separation applications. Herein, we report a rapid spray-crosslinked assembly for fabricating a high-performance polyelectrolyte bipolar membrane. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glutaricdialdehyde (GA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) are alternatively and successively sprayed onto a supporting cation-exchange membrane. GA crosslinked PVA and PEI are responsible for the interlayer and anion-exchange layer, respectively. Under optimal conditions, at a current density of 100 mA cm−2, the cell voltage of the BPM was as low as 1.79 V. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the spray crosslinked membrane has good stability in acid and alkali harsh conditions. In contrast to the traditional casting method, spray assembly combined with chemical cross-linking can tune the membrane thickness at the nanoscale and microscale levels, as well as increase its charge density and ion-exchange capacity. This facile approach might open a new way to efficiently and flexibly produce various bipolar membranes with different polyelectrolytes.

Green hydrogen production via water electrolysis is a crucial pathway for sustainable energy generation. Bipolar membrane water electrolysis (BPMWE) offers several advantages, including kinetically optimal electrode reactions across pH gradients and reduced component costs. However, challenges such as high overpotential of the BPM for water dissociation (WD) and the need for long-term stability in industrial setting hinder BPMWE development. While various metal oxide catalysts have been explored to reduce WD overpotential in BPMs, the effect of different crystalline phases of interfacial catalysts on BPM performance remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the catalytic effects of three titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) phases—anatase, rutile, and amorphous—as interfacial catalysts in BPMs. The electrochemical tests reveal that rutile TiO 2 , with its uniform dispersion and minimal aggregation, offers excellent WD efficiency. The BPM incorporating rutile TiO 2 achieves current densities of 2300 mA cm -2 in pure water electrolysis and 4500 mA cm -2 in acid-base electrolysis at 3V and 80°C. Furthermore, in a flow-cell electrolyzer, it sustains stable operation for 200 hours at 1000 mA cm -2 . This work addresses critical challenges in BPM development, advancing BPMWE technology and supporting the potential for industrial-scale hydrogen production, thereby willing to contribute to the transition to sustainable energy solutions.

Bipolar membrane (BPM) has been used commercially in electrodialysis separation processes for the generation of acid and base from aqueous salt solutions and electrochemical water splitting processes for hydrogen generation. Research advances have demonstrated that, upon a sufficient applied reverse bias, water molecules at the junction zone of the BPM can dissociate into protons (H+) and hydroxide anions (OH–). Therefore, a stable and catalytic active junction for rapid water dissociation is highly desired, but it still remains a challenge for current bipolar membrane designs. Here, we demonstrate a versatile strategy for fabricating a thin metal–polymer coordination complex junction-based bipolar membrane. The complex used consists of polyethylenimine (PEI) that coordinate to Fe(III) centers through the amine–iron interaction (Fe(III)@PEI). The unique coordination interaction enables to promote water dissociation and suppress catalyst leakage issue. In addition, to prevent junction layer dehydration from highly efficient water dissociation, the cation-exchange membrane containing porous water channels is utilized to sufficiently replenish the water molecules consumed at the junction zone. Notably, under a current density of 320 mA cm–2, Fe(III)@PEI-based BPM exhibits a voltage of 1.88 V, which is 56 and 36% lower than PEI-based BPM and FeCl3-based BPM, respectively. Moreover, during a constant current density operation at 60 mA cm–2, Fe(III)@PEI-based BPM exhibits a much lower voltage increasing speed (5.93 mV h–1) than the FeCl3-based BPM (32.64 mV h–1), indicating the improved durability of the metal–polymer coordination complex junction.

Mixed salt from the concentrated brine that contains NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 has been classified as hazardous waste since 2016 in China. This fact created an urgent and tremendous demand to treat these brine promptly. In this paper, we reported a method of using selectrodialysis with the bipolar membrane (BMSED) to reutilize the concentrated brine to produce high-purity HCl, NaOH, and Na 2 SO 4 , which fulfilled the demand above. The selective PPy(Cl) composite membrane, which was able to separate NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 in the concentrated brine, was prepared. The 3.5 μm PPy(Cl) film significantly enhanced the selectivity of the anion exchange membrane (AEM) to chloride ions while sulfate ions were blocked. The BMSED stack with our multilayer PPy(Cl) composite AEM produced 1.23 mol/L HCl with a purity higher than 98.2%. More importantly, the prepared PPy(Cl) composite AEM was not only suitable for brine with a high Cl − /SO 4 2− of 19:1, which was the typical ratio in concentrated brine from the coal chemical industry, but also able to treat the brine with a Cl − /SO 4 2− as low as 1:1, showing superior capability. The effluent of the BMSED we developed, which contained 0.02 mol/L Na 2 SO 4 with the Cl − /SO 4 2− equaling to 1:1, could be further concentrated by reverse osmosis for sea water (RO-SW) and freeze crystallization to obtain Na 2 SO 4 with a high purity accordingly. This reutilization route of concentrated brine was very green because it not only produced no hazardous waste, but also recycled valuable products. Therefore, it was believed a promising application in the coal chemical industry.

Currently, bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) is recognized as an eco-friendly technique to recycle lithium from waste lithium-ion batteries. However, the application of ordinary bipolar membranes has the disadvantage of unsatisfactory product purity due to undesired ion leakage. Herein, we proposed isolation chamber bipolar membrane electrodialysis (ICBMED) to inhibit coion migration, thereby increasing the purity of the regenerated acid and alkali. The experimental results indicate that 97.7%–99.3% of the LiOH generated by the ICBMED using domestic membranes was generated, which is much greater than the 85.7%–94.4% obtained without an isolation chamber. The total cost of the ICBMED for LiOH production with inexpensive domestic membranes was 1.65$/kg-LiOH (US) at 400 A/m 2 , which is lower than the cost of 1.91$/kg-LiOH (US) for flagship membranes with identical product quality. BMED with an isolation chamber provides a viable solution for acid–base production by balancing product quality and cost.
