A facile fluorometric and light-scattering dual-modal nanosensor for silver(I) ions detection was established based on target-responsive aggregation of carbon dots/cysteine system. The synthesized water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) by the one-pot hydrothermal method exhibited emissions peak at 441 nm under excitation at 352 nm. CDs fluorescence was quenched by Ag+via electron transfer, while the light-scattering intensity of CDs was significantly enhanced, providing a dual-modal means of analyte Ag+ detection. The relative fluorescence intensity is directly proportional to the concentration of Ag+ between 0.1 μM and 265 μM, and the detection limit is 50 nM. Moreover, the relative light-scattering intensity is proportional to the concentration of Ag+ from 10 to 4000 nM with the detection limit 2 nM. Common compounds including different types of metal ions had no significant interference in the detection mode. The new nanosensor was simple, rapid and sensitive and was applied to the detection of Ag+ in real water samples with satisfactory results. Moreover, the present CDs-based dual-modal sensor provided a promising platform for environmental sensing applications.

Flexible conductive coatings have the potential to imbue traditional textiles with a range of functional or intelligent properties, including sensing, light emission, heat generation, etc. However, these flexible coatings are prone to damage from external forces in real-world applications. This study focuses on developing a chemically modified flexible coating with MXene as a conductive ligand, aiming to strike the characteristics of mechanical, conductive, and self-healing harmoniously. The process involves synthesizing modified 4-vinyl benzaldehyde into polyurethane (VPU), which is then cross-linked with chitosan to enhance the self-healing efficiency. The conductive ligand, MXene, was modified with tannic acid to strengthen hydrogen bonding with the VPUs. The resulting self-healing waterborne polyurethane conductive coating exhibits an impressive self-healing efficiency of 96 %, along with a high tensile strength at a break of 5.58 MPa and an elongation at a break of 340 %. It also demonstrates antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus of up to 86.8 % and 90.1 %, respectively. Importantly, this study also explores the wearable applications of flexible electronic devices. They can detect pressures up to 100 kPa in a maximum sensitivity of 0.204 kPa −1 in the initial pressure range from 1 to 15 kPa. They can also monitor the pressure response of the foot in different motion states, suggesting potential integration with insoles or socks. This work offers a practical method for combining the key properties of polymer conductive coatings with the design of carbon nanomaterial-based stress-strain sensors. They are potentially applied to this approach including smart robots, e-skins, wearable health management systems, and artificial intelligence, among others.

Multimode sensors are required to enable detect of hazardous substances in different media. A sensing platform based on metal organic frameworks (MOF) and its derivatives was established to detect triethylamine (TEA) gas and TEA aqueous solution in the range of 1–100 ppm. The carbon dots (CDs) were selected as the light-energy conversion module to improve greatly the photoelectric performance of sensors. On the one hand, the dual-emission ratio type fluorescent sensor was built by CDs and MOF. The CDs@ZIF-8(In) showed excellent fluorescence emission enhancement at 440 nm and 610 nm in a dose-dependent manner when TEA was added. The change of fluorescence emission intensity of CDs@ZIF-8(In) sensor for TEA in water was at least 3 times than that of other volatile organic compounds, and its detection limit reached 1 ppm. On the other hand, the gas sensor based on MOF derivatives modified by CDs (CDs@D ZIF-8(In) ) displayed 3.5 times signal response than pure D ZIF-8(In) , reaching 374.6 to 100 ppm TEA. Moreover, the optimal operating temperature of CDs@D ZIF-8(In) sensor was 40 ℃ lower than that of D ZIF-8(In) sensor. The excellent fluorescence and electron transfer properties of CDs may play a key role in the design and modification of various types of sensors.

Electro-optical fibers with dual-mode sensing ability show broad potential in wearable electronics and intelligent human-machine interaction. However, the complex multi-step preparation procedures and the limited environmental adaptivity in materials (stretchability, healability, recyclability, etc.) hinder its practical applications. Herein, based on a urea-oxime polyurethane, a fiber integrating dual-mode electrical sensing and two-color light-emitting functions is developed using a one-step continuous coaxial wet-spinning process, with luminescent sulfides-doped shell layer and an ionogel conductive core layer. The fiber exhibits excellent mechanical, electrical, and optical healing capabilities with efficiencies of 94%, 92%, and 99%, which can be quickly recycled within 30 minutes. Utilizing the electro-optical bimodular perceptive fiber, multi-scenario applications including insect phototaxis monitoring, luminous wearables, and smart tripwires are demonstrated, revealing the healing superiority in programming complex fiber architectures to adapt to substrates with shape or size diversity. Moreover, a healing-programmed fiber with tailored segments is demonstrated for electro-optical hybrid encrypted information transmission. This work inspires a promising healing-programming strategy of healable electro-optical fibers for wide applications in tactile sensing and information communicating.

Herein, we proposed a novel bioenzyme-free dual-mode sensing strategy for the rapid and accurate monitoring of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) by preparing tris(2,2′-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ ) encapsulated with UiO-66-NH 2 MOFs as nanozyme (Ru@Zr-MOFs). The as-prepared Ru@Zr-MOFs nanozyme not only exhibits superior peroxidase-like activity which can catalyze O-phenylenediamine (OPD) oxidation to generate yellow 2,3-diaminophenazinc, but also exhibits dual-fluorescence feature (at 442 and 612 nm respectively) and specific interaction capacity with OPs. However, in the existence of OPs, the peroxidase-like activity of Ru@Zr-MOFs nanozyme is restricted and the oxidation process of OPD is stopped; meanwhile, the fluorescence of Ru@Zr-MOFs at 442 nm increases rapidly (< 10 s) while that at 612 nm is apathetic, thus a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent sensing strategy was first designed to detect OPs by using glyphosate (Gly) as a typical model of OPs. Then, in consideration of the benefits of smartphone which can make the sensing process more convenient, stable, rapid and sensitive feedback, a smartphone coupled with hydrogel detection platform was proposed also for OPs determination. In addition, the designed sensing strategy offers superior selectivity , stability and real application capabilities. It’s thus expected the as-designed Ru@Zr-MOFs nanozyme based dual-mode sensing strategy possesses important real application for the low-cost, rapid, sensitive and accurate determination of OPs.

Accurate detection of Cys/Hcy levels is critical for evaluating human health conditions. In this study, we developed an innovative fluorescence/colorimetric dual-mode sensing system to detect Cys/Hcy by dynamically adjusting the level of oxTMB. The system utilizes Au@PtNPs with peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of colorless 3,3,5,5- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB, and TAPB@DMTP COF, a fluorescent nanomaterial with abundant spatial pores, could be used as a carrier for oxTMB, and the two were made fluorescence quenching due to the fluorescence inner filter effect. The addition of Cys/Hcy allowed the originally dispersed Au@PtNPs to aggregate to inhibit their peroxidase-like activity, thus indirectly regulating the oxTMB content. At this point, the absorbance signal decreased and fluorescence was restored. To this end, we have developed a special fluorescence/colorimetric dual-mode sensing system for the detection of Cys/Hcy. The detection limits of the fluorescence and colorimetric methods for Cys/Hcy were determined to be 0.788 nM (Cys), 0.663 nM (Hcy), and 1.795 nM (Cys), 1.886 nM (Hcy), respectively. The sensing system was also evaluated for its ability to withstand interferences from 12 anions and 13 amino acids, demonstrating excellent unti-interference and selectivity. The recoveries of the two methods for detecting Cys/Hcy in fetal bovine serum were found to be 98.9%-114.3% with RSDs as low as 0.52% (fluorescence) and 0.92% (colorimetric), respectively.

4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is a common stuff involved in industrial production as well as a toxic pollutant which poses a threat to the environment and human health if not handled properly. Here, we have designed and synthesized two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely Ce-MOF-1 and Ce-MOF-2 with both fluorescent and electrochemical activities, which exhibite dual-mode sensing of 4-NP. The fluorescence emission spectra at 366 nm of both Ce-MOF-1 and Ce-MOF-2 displayed a significant turn-off signal affected by the competitive absorption and photoelectron transfer of 4-NP with the detection limits of 1.25 and 0.78 μM, respectively. Simutanously, in electrochemical sensing, 4-NP is irreversibly reduced to 4-hydroxylamine phenol under the catalysis of Ce-MOFs coating on electrode, which exhibit higher accuracy than fluorescence with detection limits of 0.36 and 0.41 μM, respectively, for the quantitatively sensing of 4-NP. Due to their complementary immunity to interference in electrochemical and fluorescence methods for 4-NP detection, Ce-MOFs exhibit more accurate 4-NP detection ability compared to other sensors. Finallly, both Ce-MOFs demonstrate excellent stability, reproducibility and selectivity in dual-mode sensing of 4-NP in tap water, that provides superior adaptability, reliability and accuracy compared to the traditional single-mode sensing method.

A novel magnetic/fluorometric bimodal sensor was built from carbon dots (CDs) and MnO2. The resulting sensor was sensitive to glutathione (GSH), leading to apparent enhancement of magnetic resonance (MR) and fluorescence signals along with visual changes. The bimodal detection strategy is based on the decomposition of the CDs–MnO2 through a redox reaction between GSH and MnO2. This process causes the transformation from non-MR-active MnO2 to MR-active Mn2+, and is accompanied by fluorescence restoration of CDs. Compared with a range of other CDs, the polyethylenimine (PEI) passivated CDs (denoted as pCDs) were suitable for detection due to their positive surface potential. Cross-validation between MR and fluorescence provided detailed information regarding the MnO2 reduction process, and revealed the three distinct stages of the redox process. Thus, the design of a CD-based sensor for the magnetic/fluorometric bimodal detection of GSH was emphasized for the first time. This platform showed a detection limit of 0.6 μM with a linear range of 1–200 μM in the fluorescence mode, while the MR mode exhibited a linear range of 5–200 μM and a GSH detection limit of 2.8 μM with a visible change being observed rapidly at 1 μM in the MR images. Furthermore, the introduction of the MR mode allowed the biothiols to be easily identified. The integration of CD fluorescence with an MR response was demonstrated to be promising for providing detailed information and discriminating power, and therefore extend the application of CDs in sensing and imaging.

Flexible, skin-like sensors are capable of converting various external stimuli into measurable electrical signals, crucial for advancing human-computer interaction and wearable health monitoring devices. Previous research on flexible smart sensing elements has primarily targeted single sensing functions, leaving the quest for integrated sensors capable of monitoring multiple signals largely unmet. In this paper, a signal-independent and interference-resistant pressure-temperature dual-mode sensor was fabricated by using a synergistic approach of structure and material design. A temperature-sensitive layer with a high temperature coefficient was prepared by introducing MOF-MXene into PU, and the dual-mode sensor was subsequently obtained by assembling it with S-MXene/PVDF composite as the encapsulating material and the pressure sensing layer. Fabric electrodes have small longitudinal dimensions as well as favorable compressibility and are well suited for the preparation of the miniature integrated sensor. Remarkably, the sensor demonstrates independent high-performance detection of both temperature and pressure signals. In terms of temperature sensing, the device has an average sensitivity of -3.6 %·°C
-1
and a resolution of 0.1 °C, which is better than most sensors based on thermally sensitive semiconductor materials. The sensor has excellent resistance to stress and pressure interference, which is promising for application in the detection of human physiological signals. While pressure sensing, the sensor has excellent overall performance, such as high sensitivity (1.02 kPa
-1
), skin-like rapid response time (40 ms), ultra-high cyclic stability (20,000 cycles). Benefiting from the smaller temperature coefficient of the dielectric composite material, the sensor is insensitive to temperature within the range of 20-50 °C.

An innovative method for carbendazim (CBZ) detection was developed, consisting of an electrochemical-fluorescence dual-mode biosensor based on magneto-fluorescent composite M-CDs. M-CDs, as the fluorescent probe of this sensor, could combine the electrical signal-ferrocene to achieve the “signal switching” by specifically recognizing CBZ through aptamers, of which magnetic property was used to quickly separate from complex substrates without interference. The dual-mode sensor based on M-CDs demonstrated excellent linear responses in both electrochemical and fluorescence assays. It achieved detection ranges of 10 fg/mL − 300 ng/mL and 60 fg/mL – 100 ng/mL with detection limits (LODs) of 1.4 fg/mL and 2.3 fg/mL. The sensor exhibited exceptional detection performance, stability and anti-interference. In addition, the results of the sensor in actual samples were consistent with those of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which further demonstrated that the sensor could accurately trace detecting CBZ in real samples and had a certain application prospect.

This study presents an integrated dual-mode sensing strategy, in which qualitative fluorescence screening is followed by quantitative electrochemical detection, improving detection efficiency and enabling rapid PCM analysis. It develops a novel fluorescence electrochemical aptasensor that combines in vitro “Dark-box” applications with CRISPR/Cas12a system electrode surface sensing technology. PCM activates the DNA walker, and the DNAzyme induces cyclic cleavage of DNA strands bearing the Carboxyfluorescein (FMA) group. After magnetic separation, the fluorescence reaction combined with the “Dark box” enables the preliminary qualitative analysis of procymidone (PCM). Following the preliminary qualitative detection, the solution is introduced to the electrochemical aptasensor platform integrated with the CRISPR/Cas12 system. The Cas12a system triggers cyclic cleavage, producing a signal change that enables the electrochemical quantitative detection of PCM. An fluorescence (FL) response occurs when the PCM concentration in spiked samples is at or above 1 pg·mL −1 , allowing for qualitative fluorescence detection. The EC platform's detection limit is 8.51 × 10 −6 ng·mL −1 , with a range of 1 × 10 −2 ng·mL −1 to 1 × 10 4 ng·mL −1 . The designed dual-mode sensor provides reliable monitoring of PCM in real samples.

Tactile sensors with multimode sensing ability are cornerstones of artificial skin for applications in humanoid robotics and smart prosthetics. However, the intuitive and interference-free reading of multiple tactile signals without involving complex algorithms and calculations remains a challenge. Herein a pressure–temperature bimodal tactile sensor without any interference is demonstrated by combining the fundamentally different sensing mechanisms of optics and electronics, enabling the simultaneous and independent sensing of pressure and temperature with the elimination of signal separation algorithms and calculations. The bimodal sensor comprises a mechanoluminescent hybrid of ZnS–CaZnOS and a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thermoresistant material, endowing the unambiguous transduction of pressure and temperature into optical and electrical signals, respectively. This device exhibits the highest temperature sensitivity of −0.6% °C–1 in the range of 21–60 °C and visual sensing of the applied forces at a low limitation of 2 N. The interference-free and light-emitting characteristics of this device permit user-interactive applications in robotics for encrypted communication as well as temperature and pressure monitoring, along with wireless signal transmission. This work provides an unexplored solution to signal interference of multimodal tactile sensors, which can be extended to other multifunctional sensing devices.
