A dual-cell wastewater treatment system with combining anodic visible light driven photoelectro-catalytic oxidation and cathodic electro-Fenton oxidation

Xing Ding,Zhihui Ai,Lizhi Zhang

In this study a dual-cell wastewater treatment system was constructed by coupling anodic photo-electrochemical/electro-Fenton (PEC) cell and cathodic electro-Fenton (EF) cell (D-PEC-EF), with the Bi 2 WO 6 nanoplates deposited on fluorine-tin oxide glass as the anode (Bi 2 WO 6 /FTO) and Fe@Fe 2 O 3 core–shell nanowires supported on activated carbon fiber (Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /ACF) as the gas diffusion cathode. The two separated cells could degrade rhodamine B (RhB) simultaneously and thus enhance the degradation efficiency and the TOC removal significantly in comparison with that of counterpart single-cell PEC-EF system (S-PEC-EF) because of more hydrogen peroxide electro-generated on the Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /ACF cathode by photo-generated electrons transferred from the Bi 2 WO 6 /FTO anode and less hydrogen peroxide consumed by anodic oxidation owing to the partition of two cells, which enhanced both PEC and EF oxidation ability and improved both photocatalytic quantum efficiency and overall current efficiency significantly. This study could not only provide a high effective and energy-saving advanced oxidation technology for wastewater treatment, but also deepen understanding of the synergic effect in dual-cell electrochemical process.

Mercapto-Functionalized Sacrificial Agents Enable Dual-Electrode Nano-Protection in MnO2||Zn batteries

Yuchao Chen,Fangfang Wu,Yulong Chen,Dongshu Liu,Junkang Zhang,Pu Wang,Yancong Feng,Wenxian Liu,Tianqi Deng,Wenhui Shi,Xiehong Cao

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) offer significant promise for large-scale applications due to their low cost, high safety, and sustainability, prompting researchers to address the key issues of zinc dendrite formation, anode side reactions, and cathode dissolution.Despite most current research focusing on optimizing either the anode or the cathode, achieving coordinated improvements in both electrodes is crucial for fully realizing the potential of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), and remains a significant challenge due to the complexity involved in balancing the performance of both electrodes. Herein, we propose a sacrificial agent-promoted protective strategy that enhances the performance of both the anode and cathode simultaneously. Specifically, the mercapto-containing sacrificial agent adsorbs on the Zn anode, localizing electrons around the thiol group to trigger an in-situ transformation reaction. This reaction forms a modulation layer that optimizes Zn2+ deposition. Concurrently, the agent promotes the formation of a protective MnO2 nanoparticle shell to reduce cathode dissolution. This strategy significantly enhances the cycling stability of both the Zn||Zn and MnO2||Zn cells, achieving 4.5 and 3 times longer performance, respectively, compared to those in ZnSO4 electrolyte. This work presents a simple and efficient dual-function approach that simultaneously stabilizes the Zn anode and suppresses Mn-based cathode dissolution, offering a promising pathway for the practical development of AZIBs.

Enhancing Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Performance of CoMoO4-Based Microrod Arrays in Neutral Media through Alkaline Activation

Xin Cui,Yu Cui,Meiling Chen,Rui Xiong,Yucheng Huang,Xiaowang Liu

We present that activation of CoMoO4-based microrod arrays in KOH (1.0 M, 2 h) allows us to significantly improve their electrochemical hydrogen evolution performance in phosphate buffer solution (1.0 M, pH = 7.1). The activation mechanism originates from the conversion of the surface layer of CoMoO4 to Co(OH)2 nanosheets, together with the release of Mo3O102– ions into the activation solution. Our experimental and calculated results suggest that the Co(OH)2 nanosheets on the surface of the CoMoO4-based microrod arrays show the ability to improve water molecule disassociation and stabilize the catalytic activity of the two-component catalysts by decreasing their overpotentials in the hydrogen evolution reaction. When extending this strategy to activate P-doped CoMoO4 with a low hydrogen absorption free energy, we report the synthesis of a new class of superior neutral electrochemical hydrogen evolution catalysts of P-doped CoMoO4–Co(OH)2 microrod arrays. We show that a low overpotential of about 30 mV (obtained from bulk electrolysis) is required to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in the neutral media. By making use of our catalyst and NiFe double hydroxide as cathodic and anodic electrodes, respectively, we fabricated a two-electrode electrolysis device for neutral overall water splitting. Our results showed a low cell voltage of 1.78 V (obtained from bulk electrolysis) that is needed for delivering a current density of about 10 mA cm–2 in the neutral electrolyte, even outperforming the state-of-the-art catalyst combination of Pt/C∥RuO2 in terms of catalytic activity and stability. These findings suggest that our strategy may be utilized as a facile but useful strategy toward the activation of molybdate catalysts to improve their HER performance in both basic and neutral media.

A dual-electrode oxide ion sensor for molten carbonates

Di Chen,Kaifa Du,Wenmiao Li,Bowen Deng,Wei Li,Huayi Yin,Dihua Wang

The concentration of oxide ions (O 2– ) determines the physicochemical properties of molten carbonates and modulates (electro)chemical reactions. However, it still lacks an efficient and reliable method to measure O 2– concentration in molten carbonates. Herein, we design a dual-electrode sensor to monitor the O 2– content in real time. For sensing O 2– in the target molten medium, we deliberately selected a Ni/NiO redox couple to serve as an O 2– -responding internal reference membrane electrode (RE in ) assembled in an yttrium-stabilized zirconia tube, which is accessible to achieve a stable and excellent response of O 2– from the bulk melt. To measure the membrane potential of RE in that is associated with the O 2– concentration in the bulk melt, we paired a Ag/Ag 2 SO 4 external reference electrode (RE ex ), which can indicate the potential difference between RE in and RE ex by measuring the open circuit potential (OCP), therefore figuring out the O 2– concentration based on Nernst equation. Taking molten Li 2 CO 3 -Na 2 CO 3 -K 2 CO 3 for example, the homemade dual-electrode sensor is well-responsive with a reliable linear correlation coefficient of R 2  = 0.9992 even the O 2– content is as low as 1.27 × 10 −4  mol kg −1 . The proposed dual-electrode gives clues to the rational design of anion sensor for relatively high-temperature systems.

pH-Universal Decoupled Water Electrolysis Enabled by Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Gas Capacitive Chemistry

Zhengxin Zhu,Taoli Jiang,Jifei Sun,Zaichun Liu,Zehui Xie,Shuang Liu,Yahan Meng,Qia Peng,Weiping Wang,Kai Zhang,Hongxu Liu,Yuan Yuan,Ke Li,Wei Chen

In conventional water electrolysis (CWE), the H2 and O2 evolution reactions (HER/OER) are tightly coupled, making the generated H2 and O2 difficult to separate, thus resulting in complex separation technology and potential safety issues. Previous efforts on the design of decoupled water electrolysis mainly concentrated on multi-electrode or multi-cell configurations; however, these strategies have the limitation of involving complicated operations. Here, we propose and demonstrate a pH-universal, two-electrode capacitive decoupled water electrolyzer (referred to as all-pH-CDWE) in a single-cell configuration by utilizing a low-cost capacitive electrode and a bifunctional HER/OER electrode to separate H2 and O2 generation for decoupling water electrolysis. In the all-pH-CDWE, high-purity H2 and O2 generation alternately occur at the electrocatalytic gas electrode only by reversing the current polarity. The designed all-pH-CDWE can maintain a continuous round-trip water electrolysis for over 800 consecutive cycles with an electrolyte utilization ratio of nearly 100%. As compared to CWE, the all-pH-CDWE achieves energy efficiencies of 94% in acidic electrolytes and 97% in alkaline electrolytes at a current density of 5 mA cm–2. Further, the designed all-pH-CDWE can be scaled up to a capacity of 720 C in a high current of 1 A for each cycle with a stable HER average voltage of 0.99 V. This work provides a new strategy toward the mass production of H2 in a facilely rechargeable process with high efficiency, good robustness, and large-scale applications.

Tailoring the electrolyte microenvironment of indium catalysts for enhanced formic acid electrosynthesis

Zifan Zhu,Yuanxiang Zhao,Pengfei Sun,Yuchen Sun,Xintao Ma,Yunyun Dong,Zhihao Zhang,Abdullah N. Alodhayb,Xiaodong Yi,Wei Shi,Zhou Chen

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to formic acid is considered an economically viable avenue toward carbon neutrality. Indium-based catalysts have garnered considerable attention in CO 2 RR owing to their elevated hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential and eco-friendly characteristics. We have synthesized In 2 O 3 nanofibers rich in oxygen vacancies using the electrospinning technique. The resultant 500-In 2 O 3 exhibited superior performance in converting CO 2 RR to HCOOH, achieving an impressive formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.1% at a current density of −600 mA cm −2 . Moreover, it demonstrated remarkable stability, maintaining its performance over 100 h at a current density of −300 mA cm −2 under a neutral electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in conjunction with spectroscopic characterizations, have revealed that a Cl-modified In catalyst exhibits a lowered energy barrier for the formation of *HCOOH, while simultaneously inhibiting the generation of *H, in contrast to its pristine In counterpart. Ultimately, we successfully engineered a dual-electrode system capable of simultaneously producing formate at both the cathode and the anode. At a current density of −100 mA cm −2 , our system achieves a reduction in energy consumption by 12.5% and a significant enhancement in electrical energy conversion efficiency by 39.9%.

Improving dual electrodes compatibility through tailoring solvation structures enabling high-performance and low-temperature Li||LiFePO4 batteries

Yuzhi Chen,Boliang Ma,Qingchuan Wang,Limin Liu,Luyao Wang,Shujiang Ding,Wei Yu

Li||LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries have good stability and high energy density . However, they exhibit unsatisfactory low-temperature electrochemical performance . Due to the fragile interfacial passivation layers and sluggish kinetics, commercial electrolytes fail to simultaneously achieve acceptable stabilization with dual electrodes in low-temperature Li||LFP batteries. Herein, a novel localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) with great dual-electrodes compatibility is proposed to match with the low-temperature Li||LFP batteries. With increasing local concentration, the FSI - sequentially replaces the solvent molecules and enters the first solvation sheath, forming the anion-dominated solvation structures. This effectively suppresses free solvents decomposition and constructs the anion-derived passivation layers with inorganic-rich components, further contributing to the rapid transport kinetics and endowing the LHCE with great dual electrodes compatibility. These dual-electrodes co-stabilization effects of the LHCE are originally clarified in the low-temperature Li||LFP batteries. The designed LHCE also delivers low freezing point (-99.8 ℃), high ionic conductivity (2.4 mS cm −1 at −40 ℃), and superior stability (>4.7 V vs. Li/Li + ). Hence, the Li||LFP batteries with LHCE possess superb cyclic stability at low temperatures, delivering a high discharge capacity of 120 mAh g −1 over 300 cycles at −20 ℃. Moreover, compared to commercial electrolytes, LHCE endows the Li||LFP batteries with superior low-temperature performances under practical conditions, including limited Li anode (3 mAh cm −2 ) and a wide temperature range (30 ℃ to −40 ℃).

Dual-electric-polarity augmented cyanoethyl cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerator with ultra-high triboelectric charge density and enhanced electrical output property at high humidity

Nannan Wang,Weihua Zhang,Zibiao Li,Sheng Wang,Ady Suwardi,Enyi Ye,Bofan Li,Yupeng Liu,Zishuai Wu,Yang Dong,Xian Jun Loh,Daoai Wang

Moisture in environment can severely decrease the output of the solid-solid triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) which usually hinders their further practical applications. To solve this problem, we report a modified cellulose material that achieves enhanced electrical output property at high humidity by acquiring universal dual-electric-polarity augmented property. This material shows enhanced contact electrification performance when contacted with different electrode materials. Results show that the electrical output of the TENG composed of cyanoethyl cellulose (CE-cellulose) with poly tetra fluoroethylene (PTFE) and nylon 11 (PA 11) increased by 4 and 8 times. Moreover, the triboelectric charge density (TECD) of CE-cellulose-PTFE based TENG at 95%RH is 533 μC/m 2 , which is a new record for the electrical output of TENG in high humidity environment. This work opens new avenues to the development of TENGs for energy harvesting and self-powered sensors under the real working conditions, especially in high humidity environments, even in the presence of water droplets.

Disentangling extracellular current of electroactive bacteria with oblique-incidence reflection difference imaging

Qian Shiwu,Wang Chenyu,Fang Changxiang,Li Meng,Qiao Yan,Hu Weihua

Understanding the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process of electroactive bacteria is of great significance. It is critical yet challenging to differentiate the partial currents from direct (DET) and mediated electron transfer (MET) pathways in the integrated EET current. Herein the EET current of model exoelectrogen is successfully disentangled by using spatiotemporally-resolved oblique-incidence reflection difference (OIRD) technique coupled with polyaniline (PANI)-based dual electrode. The PANI film serves as an electron acceptor to translate the charge information into OIRD signals, enabling mapping of EET current. Upon complete reduction of PANI, the local EET current is switched off, and the soluble mediators are forced to discharge on the nearby PANI electrode, enabling measuring of MET current. In such a way, the DET and MET currents are measured and the average currents from each bacterium are quantified. As-reported method enables successful disentangling the EET current and may offer valuable insights to related research.

Transition metal oxide-nanoengineered LIG e-tongue for discriminative analysis of phenolic compounds

Xiaotian Xu,Shi-Fan Xue,Jiale Wang,Wei Zhang,Da Wu,Guoyue Shi,Min Zhang

Selective detection of phenolic compounds is imperative for environmental surveillance and public health safeguards. This study introduces a dual-electrode voltametric electronic tongue (e-tongue) leveraging transition metal oxide-nanoengineered laser-induced graphene (LIG) to resolve phenol and its cresol isomers (o-, m-, p-) despite overlapping electrochemical signals. Contrary to conventional single-electrode systems hindered by matrix-induced peak overlaps, our e-tongue employs a synergistic sensing arraying: MnO 2 /LIG and Bi 2 O 3 /LIG. These composites are fabricated via a one-step in situ laser doping process, ensuring uniform nanoparticle integration while mitigating distributional inhomogeneity and interfacial weaknesses associated with post-synthetic modifications. Both MnO 2 /LIG and Bi 2 O 3 /LIG exhibit augmented electroactive surface areas, conductivity, electron transport kinetics, hydrophilicity, and stability relative to pristine LIG. The dual-electrode system achieved robust differentiation of phenolics in buffered solutions, environmental water samples, and tobacco smoke matrices. This work pioneers a scalable nanoengineering strategy for multi-target analysis of structurally proximal pollutants, advancing point-of-need environmental monitoring technologies.

Synthesis, Activity, and Application of Fluorescent Analogs of [D1G, Δ14Q]LvIC Targeting α6β4 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor

Shengrong Pei,Chenxing Xu,Yao Tan,Meiting Wang,Jinpeng Yu,Dongting Zhangsun,Xiaopeng Zhu,Sulan Luo

α6β4* nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) (* represents the possible presence of additional subunits) is mainly distributed in the central and peripheral nervous system and is associated with neurological diseases, such as neuropathic pain; however, the ability to explore its function and distribution is limited due to the lack of pharmacological tools. As one of the analogs of α-conotoxin (α-CTx) LvIC from Conus lividus, [D1G, Δ14Q]LvIC (Lv) selectively and potently blocks α6/α3β4 nAChR (α6/α3 represents a chimera). Here, we synthesized three fluorescent analogs of Lv by connecting fluorescent molecules 6-carboxytetramethylrhodamine succinimidyl ester (6-TAMRA-SE, R), Cy3 NHS ester (Cy3, C) and BODIPY-FL NHS ester (BDP, B) to the N-terminus of the peptide and obtained Lv-R, Lv-C, and Lv-B, respectively. The potency and selectivity of three fluorescent peptides were evaluated using two-electrode voltage-clamp recording on nAChR subtypes expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes, and the potency and selectivity of Lv-B were almost maintained with the half-maximal inhibition (IC50) of 64 nM. Then, we explored the stability of Lv-B in artificial cerebrospinal fluid and stained rat brain slices with Lv-B. The results indicated that the stability of Lv-B was slightly improved compared to that of native Lv. Additionally, we detected the distribution of the α6β4* nAChR subtype in the cerebral cortex using green fluorescently labeled peptide and fluorescence microscopy. Our findings not only provide a visualized pharmacological tool for exploring the distribution of the α6β4* nAChR subtype in various situ tissues and organs but also extend the application of α-CTx [D1G, Δ14Q]LvIC to demonstrate the involvement of α6β4 nAChR function in pathophysiology and pharmacology.

The α3β4 nAChR tissue distribution identified by fluorescent α-conotoxin [D11A]LvIA

Chenxing Xu,Nan Wang,Tao Ma,Shengrong Pei,Meiting Wang,Jinpeng Yu,Dongting Zhangsun,Xiaopeng Zhu,Sulan Luo

α 3 β 4, a vital subtype of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), is widely distributed in the brain, ganglia, and adrenal glands, associated with addiction and neurological diseases. However, the lack of specific imaging tools for α 3 β 4 nAChRs has hindered the investigation of their tissue distribution and functions. [D11A]LvIA, a peptide derived from marine cone snails, demonstrates high affinity and potency for α 3 β 4 nAChRs, making it a valuable pharmacological tool for studying this receptor subtype. In this study, three fluorescent conjugates of [D11A]LvIA were synthesized using 6-TAMRA-SE (R), Cy3-NHS-ester (Cy3), and BODIPY-FL NHS ester (BDP) dyes. The electrophysiological activities were assessed in Xenopus laevis oocytes by two-electrodes voltage clamp (TEVC). [D11A]LvIA-Cy3 and [D11A]LvIA-BDP show improved selectivity and affinity, with IC 50 values of 512.70 nM and 343.50 nM, respectively, and [D11A]LvIA-Cy3 exhibits better stability in cerebrospinal fluid. Utilizing [D11A]LvIA-Cy3, we successfully visualized the distribution of α 3 β 4 nAChRs in rat trigeminal ganglia, retina, adrenal glands, and various brain regions. This novel fluorescent peptide provides a significant pharmacological tool for the exploration and visualization in-situ distribution of α 3 β 4 nAChRs in different tissues and also assists in clarifying the function.
