Developing high-performance composites with fast charging and superior cycle life is paramount for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we synthesized a double-shell carbon-coated porous structure composite with a compact surface (P-Si@rGO@C) using low-cost commercial micron-sized silicon (Si) instead of nanoscale silicon. Results reveal that the unique P-Si@rGO@C features high adaptability to volume expansion, accelerates electron/ion transmission rate, and forms a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. This phenomenon arises from the synergistic effect of abundant internal voids and an external double-layer carbon shell with a dense surface. Specifically, the P-Si@rGO@C anode exhibits a high initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) (88.0 %), impressive rate-capability (612.1 mAh/g at 2C), and exceptional long-term cyclability (972.2 mAh/g over 500 cycles at 0.5C). Further kinetic studies elucidate the diffusion-capacitance hybrid energy storage mechanism and reveal an improved Li + diffusion coefficient (from 3.47 × 10 -11 to 2.85 × 10 -9 cm 2 s -1 ). Ex-situ characterization confirms the crystal phase change of micron-sized Si and the formation of a stable LiF-rich SEI. Theoretical calculations support these findings by demonstrating an enhancement in the adsorption ability of Si to Li + (from -0.89 to -0.97 eV) and a reduction in the energy migration barrier (from 0.35 to 0.18 eV). Additionally, practical Li x Si powder is shown to increase the ICE of full cells from 67.4 % to 87.9 %. Furthermore, a pouch cell utilizing the prelithiated P-Si@rGO@C anode paired with LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM111) cathode delivers a high initial reversible capacity of 7.2 mAh and 76.8 % capacity retention after 100 cycles. This work provides insights into the application of commercial silicon-aluminum alloy powder in the anode of high-energy LIBs.

Tin monosulfide (SnS) anodes have attracted much attention for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their excellent chemical stability, high theoretical specific capacity and outstanding reversibility. However, the slow kinetics and large volume expansion of intrinsic SnS electrodes in the conversion reaction process restrict their application to a certain extent. To address the poor conductivity and volume fluctuation, N-doped double-carbon-layer protective hierarchical structures decorating SnS nanotubes (N-DCSNs) are introduced by in situ polymerization directed using a g-C3N4 soft template. Particularly, N-doped double carbon layers provide fast transport channels for electrons and ions, affording decent conductivity and rapid ionic diffusion rate. Most importantly, the volume expansion of SnS during the charge–discharge cycles can be buffered owing to the confinement effect of the double carbon layer. Synergistic effects of N-DCSNs enhance the mechanical integrity and electrochemical kinetics during the charge–discharge process, leading to high-capacity retention and long-term stability properties. As a remarkable anode for LIBs, the N-DCSN electrode delivers high capacities of 911.5 and 511.3 mA h g−1 at 0.2 and 1.0 A g−1 after 270 and 1000 cycles, respectively. The feasible and versatile structure design can offer new ideas for the preparation and regulation of other transition metal sulfide anode materials, and provide a relevant experimental basis for the further development of lithium/sodium storage equipment.

Organic electrode materials are considered as a promising alternative to conventional transition metal-based electrodes because of their low cost, adjustable structure, high specific capacity, and good sustainability. However, many organic molecule electrodes and their corresponding discharge products can be easily dissolved in liquid electrolytes, leading to severe shuttle effect and performance decay. Here, we designed a separator with double carbon layer modification. The first layer is a B 4 O 7 2− cross-linked GO layer, which serves as a barrier to prevent organic small molecules from passing through the separator attributed to physical blocking and electrostatic repulsion. The second layer is a carbon nanotube layer, which mainly acts as an absorbing layer and upper current collector attributed to porous structure and good conductivity. The synergistic effect of double carbon layer enables the GO-B 4 O 7 2− @CNT-modified separator to effectively inhibit the shuttling of small molecules while maintaining their intrinsic electrochemical performance. Three soluble organic electrode materials with different molecular sizes, including 2,3,5,6-tetraamino-benzoquinone (TABQ), 9,10-anthraquinone (AQ), and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI), were used as model molecules to validate the availability of modified separator, and the results shows that their cycling stability, specific capacity and rate capability were enhanced significantly after using the separator. Such simple cost-effective separator modification method will substantially promote the battery performance and facilitate the application of organic small molecule electrodes for energy storage.
