Efficient luminescent stable Chichibabin diradicaloid for near-infrared imaging and photothermal therapy

Liu Ting,Zhu Zihao,Wang Shengjie,Shen Li,Abdurahman Alim,Liu Xiaomin,Lu Geyu

Diradicaloids have garnered significant attention due to their unique electronic, photophysical properties and potential applications in functional materials. Characterized by a narrow band gap and near-infrared (NIR) absorption, diradicaloids are promising candidates for NIR-guided photothermal therapy. However, they are often unstable and exhibit non-emissive properties due to high chemical reactivity and very efficient internal conversion. Herein, we report a remarkably stable Chichibabin diradicaloid, TT-CzPh, which exhibits NIR luminescence (λ em  = 821 nm) with an efficient photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 6.4%. Surprisingly, TT-CzPh not only exhibits excellent NIR imaging but also has a very high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of 87.5%. In vivo experiments with TT-CzPh nanoparticles demonstrated their effectiveness in tumor photoablation guided by NIR imaging. This work not only advances the development of stable, efficient luminescent Chichibabin’s hydrocarbons but also opens new avenues for bioimaging and cancer phototherapy applications.

Mechanism investigation of HS radical and CS losses from positively charged biradicals of diphenyl sulfides by APCI mass spectrometry

Xiaoji Cao,Chenlu Wang,Weimin Mo

Rationale Aryl thioethers are potentially useful precursors for constructing various biologically active sulfur-containing heterocycles. The detailed relationship between the losses of HS radical and CS with the spin multiplicity of positively charged diphenyl sulfide biradicals derived from 3-iodophenyl phenyl sulfides has not been obtained by tandem mass spectrometry combined with theoretical calculations. Methods Collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry experiments were carried out using an ion trap mass spectrometer with APCI in positive mode. The MS/MS experiment for dibenzothiophene was performed by CI triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry in positive ion mode. The accurate masses of fragments were obtained by reflective TOFMS with an EI source. Theoretical calculations were achieved by the density functional theory method at the B3LYP level with the 6−31+G(d, p) basis set in the Gaussian 03 package of programs. Results In the fragmentation of positively charged diphenyl sulfide biradicals, losses of HS· and CS were observed, which were proposed to originate from spin multiplicity transformation from a triplet ground state to a singlet excited state and a phenyl radical shift in triplet ground state, respectively. Moreover, a protonated dibenzothiophene intermediate was confirmed to exist in the process of HS radical loss. A linear correlation was established between the product ion abundance from the two competitive losses and the Hammett constants (σ) of substituent groups on the benzene ring. Conclusions The eliminations of HS· and CS in the fragmentation of positively charged diphenyl sulfide biradicals were triggered by spin multiplicity transformation from a triplet ground state to a singlet excited state and a phenyl radical shift in a triplet ground state, respectively. Based on theoretical calculations, two competitive neutral losses are thermodynamically controlled. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In Situ Synthesis of Bacterial Cellulose-Supported CoAl-Layered Double Hydroxide as a Peroxymonosulfate Activator for Enhancing the Removal of Tetracycline

Xiuzhi Bai,Yongsheng Du,Zhongxiang Liu,Jing Cheng,Jie Yang,Ying Li

This study employed the hydrothermal coprecipitation method to grow CoAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) onto bacterial cellulose (BC) in situ, successfully preparing the CoAl-LDH@BC composite. This composite was then used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. According to the results, the CoAl-LDH@BC/PMS system demonstrated a remarkable removal efficiency of 99.9% for TC within 15 min. Moreover, the influencing factors of catalyst dosage, PMS dosage, TC concentration, reaction temperature, initial pH, and inorganic ions were evaluated. Notably, the system demonstrated broad-spectrum contaminant removal capabilities, which could simultaneously eliminate more than 99.7% of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and 87.9% of ciprofloxacin (CFX) within 20 min. Additionally, the removal rates for several dyes reached more than 95.7% in 20 min. Phytotoxicity assessment (using mung bean seeds) confirmed a significant reduction in the biotoxicity of post-treatment TC solutions. The identification of TC degradation intermediates was enabled, alongside the subsequent proposal of plausible degradation pathways. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations based on radical quenching experiments revealed the coexistence of dual radical (•OH andSO4−•) and non-radical (1O2) oxidation pathways in the reaction of the CoAl-LDH@BC/PMS system. Overall, this research broadens the potential applications of bacterial cellulose-based porous materials and provides an innovative insight into antibiotic wastewater treatment.
