A dual-trigger-mode ionic hydrogel sensor for contact or contactless motion recognition

Qiao Wang,Hongyao Ding,Xiaosai Hu,Xiaoxu Liang,Miaomiao Wang,Qing Liu,Zongjin Li,Guoxing Sun

The intelligent flexible sensors with high responsivity and detectivity are highly desired for wearable devices and human–machine interfaces (HMI). However, the existing sensors are usually limited to onefold detection performance in either contact or noncontact mode. Here, a sandwiched hydrogel capacitive system is designed to fabricate a multi-operational-mode ionic sensor (MOMS) that simultaneously recognizes mechanical stimuli and remote gestures. The novel MOMS performs satisfying sensitivity (1.7 gauge factor and 3.3 Pa−1 pressure sensitivity), rapid response for contactless gesture recognition, a quite wide working range (up to 100 kPa and 300% elongation) and a good touch-free operating distance (40 mm). Moreover, the spatial resolution of the structured sensor array meets the accurate positioning requirements under both contact and touch-free conditions. This is the first time that a capacitive hydrogel system exhibited outstanding performance in detecting contact stimuli and noncontact hand motions at the same time. Hence, the MOMS will allow significant advances in intelligent detection techniques and facilitate innovative thinking for the applications of synchronous monitoring devices.

Near-infrared absorbing mesoporous carbon nanoparticle as an intelligent drug carrier for dual-triggered synergistic cancer therapy

Li Zhou,Kai Dong,Zhaowei Chen,Jinsong Ren,Xiaogang Qu

Herein a novel multifunctional nanoplatform based on surface engineered mesoporous carbon nanoparticle (MCN) is developed for effective dual-triggered synergistic cancer therapy. MCNs employed in the study not only function as near-infrared absorbing agents but also as nanocarriers with a high drug loading efficiency. The surface modification of MCN with biomacromolecules (hyaluronic acid) through disulfide unit makes the system be sensitive to both intracellular hyaluronidase-1 and GSH to release the carried drug. The hyaluronic acid on MCN simultaneously confers the system biocompatibility and a cancer cell targeting ability. By combining these capabilities, the multifunctional nanoplatform shows an effective therapeutic efficiency toward the target cells.

Reduced Graphene Oxide@Mesoporous Silica–Doxorubicin/Hydroxyapatite Inorganic Nanocomposites: Preparation and pH–Light Dual-Triggered Synergistic Chemo-Photothermal Therapy

Ying Yang,Yunlong Wang,Wanghua Xu,Xiuzhen Zhang,Yong Shang,Anjian Xie,Yuhua Shen

Graphical A multifunctional nanocomposite, reduced graphene oxide@mesoporous silica–doxorubicin/hydroxyapatite (rGO@mSiO 2 -DOX/HA), is fabricated by a simple method for synergistic chemotherapy and photothermal therapy. The introduction of biocompatible HA nanoparticles as a biodegradable pore-capping agent results in the controlled release of DOX under pH and near-infrared (NIR) dual stimulation. A new nanocomposite, reduced graphene oxide@mesoporous silica–doxorubicin/hydroxyapatite (rGO@mSiO 2 -DOX/HA), was prepared by a simple method under mild conditions. Owing to the relatively high loading capacity of the anticancer drug DOX, the biomimetic capping of nontoxic and pH-dependent biodegradable HA on the surface of rGO@mSiO 2 -DOX, and the efficient photothermal conversion effect of rGO under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the rGO@mSiO 2 -DOX/HA nanocomposite provides a lasting and pH–light dual-triggered drug release. Therefore, the excellent biocompatibility and drug-permeation ability of the nanocomposite are realized, and synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy is also achieved. The in vitro experimental results indicate that the chemotherapy of DOX and hyperthermia of rGO under NIR light irradiation killed HeLa cells effectively. Therefore, the new nanocomposite has promising prospects as a nano-drug-delivery system and in other biomedical applications because of the pH–light dual-factor sensitivity and chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy.

“Shear force-affinity” double-triggered fixed-point cutting nanoplatform for precise atherosclerosis treatment

Huijuan Zhang,Yingmei Tian,Yan Ren,Yaning Wang,Chaoqun Wang,Lin Hou

Inflammatory infiltration and lipid metabolism disorder are two main characteristics of atherosclerosis (AS) plaque microenvironment. They interact to form a malignant positive feedback cycle, which aggravates the development of AS disease. Therefore, simultaneous improvement of inflammation and lipid metabolism will provide a significant therapeutic effect on AS. To achieve this goal, we first prepared FCD (Fuc-TK-CD) by grafting β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to fucoidan (Fuc) via reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive sulfhydryl disulfide bond (TK), then loaded resveratrol (Res) through the host-guest interaction. Finally, we coated it on the surface of SeNPs through Se O bonds to obtain FCD-Se/Res nanoplatforms. FCD-Se/Res can actively recognize P-selectin and penetrate the AS plaque interior. Subsequently, FCD-Se/Res responded to the high shear force and abundant cholesterol in the plaque microenvironment to release Res, reducing AS plaque inflammation by reversing M1 macrophages to M2 phenotype. Meanwhile, TK bonds broke in response to high ROS levels in the plaque, making β-CD free to clear excessive pathogenic cholesterol from plaques. Benefiting from the integrated multifunctionality, FCD-Se/Res can break the vicious cycle between inflammation and disrupted lipid metabolism, jointly stabilize vulnerable plaques, and exert efficient anti-AS effects. The pharmacodynamic results revealed a significantly reduced plaque vulnerability index (VI) from 4.07 to 0.40 after FCD-Se/Res treatment.

Dual-trigger microcapsules for autonomous crack healing in marine concrete: Synergistic response to mechanical stress and chloride ions

Zhenxing Du,Chenglong Li,Penggang Wang,Zuquan Jin,Li Tian,Aoshen Wang,Min Zhang

To overcome limitations of single-trigger self-healing systems, this study developed microcapsules (MCs) responsive to both mechanical stress and chloride ions for marine concrete repair. Ethyl cellulose/nano-silica shells encapsulating epoxy resin were synthesized via solvent evaporation method, with PbSO 4 embedded for chloride activation. MCs exhibited optimal size (70–120 μm), thermal stability (>190 °C), and homogeneous PbSO 4 distribution. Increasing PbSO 4 content enhanced chloride responsiveness, forming pores that released healing agent via osmotic pressure, while improving MC stiffness. Additionally, the self-healing mortars demonstrate notable strength recovery, with the highest healing rate of 126.30 % under standard curing and 114.50 % under seawater curing, reflecting the MCs' robust performance in aggressive environments. Cracks up to 229.7 μm width were effectively healed within 7 days, with healing efficiency positively correlating with PbSO 4 content. The porosity reduction rate rose with the increase in PbSO4 dosage, reducing porosity by 9.42 %–26.71 % post-healing. Additionally, MC significantly enhanced the chloride ion permeability resistance of self-healing mortars, achieving a reduction rate of 67.37 %–84.90 %. This d ual-trigger system provides targeted, efficient self-healing for marine concrete infrastructure, significantly enhancing durability.

Robust and sensitive colorimetric detection of glutathione with double-triggering MOF-Fe(DTNB)

Kaining Zhang,Hao Sun,Long Wei,Rui Hu,Hao Liu,Yongchao Lai,Xun Li

Glutathione (GSH) levels have been well validated to correlate with a variety of physiological and pathological conditions, such as malignancy, cardiovascular disease and aging, making the development of accurate, robust and sensitive GSH detection methods highly desirable. In this study, a novel metal–organic framework (MOF-Fe(DTNB))-based colorimetric method with a favorable dual-triggering function was proposed. MOF-Fe(DTNB) exhibits high peroxidase activity, which can catalyze the oxidation of colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue ox-TMB by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). This oxidation process of TMB can be inhibited not only by the reducing action of GSH, but also by the thiol exchange reaction between DTNB and GSH, in which the disulfide bond of DTNB in MOF-Fe(DTNB) is cleaved. Thus, with this dual triggering mechanism, the GSH concentration can be robustly measured in the MOF-Fe(DTNB)-derived colorimetric strategy. Significantly, this method is accurate (RSD < 6 %), selective and sensitive in biological plasma samples, with satisfactory recovery rates (96.7–103.3 %). It requires less instrumentation and has less interference from other substances. The linear range of the method is 0–80 µM, and the detection limit is as low as 0.28 µM. This dual-triggering MOF-Fe(DTNB)-derived colorimetric strategy has greatly simplified the GSH detection processes with improved accuracy, in both acidic and basic environments, which has potent applications in biochemical analysis and point-of-care testing.
