Dual-Modulated Heterojunctions for Anti-Interference Sensing of Heavy Metals in Seawater

Ye Ma,Ming Li,Kun Pang,Minggang Zhao

Trace analyte detection in a complex environment such as in seawater is usually challenging for classic redox-based electrochemical sensors since the matrix effect of high salinity and various interfering species with similar redox properties can generate false positive/negative signals, thus impacting the sensitivity and specificity of the sensors. In this work, unlike redox-based approaches, we propose a novel sensing mode that relies on dual-modulated interfacial energy barriers of heterojunctions. By constructing the hierarchical structure of Ni/TiO2/porous-reduced graphene oxide/chitosan (CS), we introduce interfacial energy barriers of Schottky junctions into the electrochemical sensors for Cu2+. Most importantly, we found that two factors, light and the electrostatic interactions between the heterojunctions and Cu2+, can be coupled to regulate the height of the interfacial energy barrier and at last exponentially magnify the sensing signals in response to Cu2+. Since the electrostatic interaction is inert to redox, the proposed sensor is robust against most interfering species even in seawater. Illumination further enhances its sensitivity by 6.23 times and endows it a limit of detection of 0.22 nM. Such a dual-modulated sensing mode is also valid in other heterojunctions such as in the p–n junctions of Ni/NiO/MoS2/CS, demonstrating its potential in more universal applications.

Light–Heat and Light–Light Dual-Controlled Upconversion Luminescence and Photochromic Processes in Er-Activated Bi7Ti4NbO21 for Optical Information Storage

Linghui Shen,Tong Wei,Yongchao Shi,Xiangyu Wang,Liwei Wu,Jiao Cui,Tianyang Zhang,Hongzhi Yu,Zepeng Li

Upconversion (UC) luminescence materials with dynamically adjustable activity under external stimuli are of great interest owing to their potential applications in optical storage and high-sensitivity optical switches. Recently, photochromic (PC) effect was considered as an alternate way to regulate the UC luminescence of inorganic materials; however, external-field-induced bleaching was routinely completed by single stimulation, which limited its practical application. In this work, one kind of smart phosphor, Er-activated Bi7Ti4NbO21 intergrowth bismuth layer-structured ceramics that exhibited both intense UC green emission and prominent PC reaction, was synthesized. The UC luminescence, PC effect, and their coupling properties were researched. Interestingly, light–heat and light–light dual-controlled UC luminescence and PC processes were realized. Accompanying the PC effect, the UC luminescence can be reversibly modified by alternating 405 and 532 nm light stimulation (or thermal stimulation). Under 405 nm irradiation, the UC luminescence quenching ratio can reach up to 80.8%. Meanwhile, the UC luminescence raise ratio can respectively reach up to 426.9 and 118.1% under 250 °C thermal treatment and 532 nm light bleaching. The UC luminescence modulation was exposed to be tightly related to the irradiation coloration and thermal/light decoloration processes. Good fatigue resistance of the UC luminescence switching was also achieved. The mechanisms related to the UC luminescence modulation and PC process were discussed. These results indicated that Er-activated Bi7Ti4NbO21 samples can be adopted as a kind of optical data memory materials.

Dual-Regulation Biomimetic Composite Nerve Scaffold with Oriented Structure and Conductive Function for Skin Peripheral Nerve Injury Repair

Jinzhi Liu,Zhiyuan Lin,Huanyou Wu,Jianming Zhang,Fujun Wang,Lu Wang,Shuliang Lu,Jing Gao

Skin peripheral nerve injury repair still faces significant clinical challenges. Although nerve tissue engineering scaffolds show potential, issues such as limited functionality and low repair efficiency persist. This study developed a dual-regulation biomimetic composite nerve scaffold with oriented structure and conductive function to promote nerve injury repair. The structural layer was a chitosan (CS)/polycaprolactone (PCL) oriented nanofiber membrane, which could promote cell adhesion and induce directional growth of cells. The functional layer was a CS/sodium alginate (SA) ionic conductive hydrogel, which could enhance endogenous electric fields to promote cell proliferation and differentiation. The two layers were combined through physical crosslinking, avoiding the use of chemical adhesives and preserving the surface morphology of the nanofibrous membrane and the porous structure of the hydrogel. The biomimetic composite nerve scaffold exhibited layered degradability, excellent orientation, conductivity, and biocompatibility. Cell experiments indicated that the scaffold effectively induced directional migration, growth, and differentiation of cells and enhanced cell activity, thereby providing a favorable microenvironment for nerve regeneration. This study not only overcomes the limitation of functional singularity in traditional nerve scaffolds but also aligns with the forefront trend in tissue engineering toward multifunctional and biomimetic materials. It demonstrates great potential for treating complex conditions such as traumatic nerve defects and post-surgical nerve regeneration and has broad application prospects in the field of neural tissue engineering.

Controllable ultra-broadband visible and near-infrared photoemissions in Bi-doped germanium-borate glasses

Xueyun Liu,Cuimei Cheng,Xiaoman Li,Qing Jiao,Shixun Dai

The design of functional materials with tunable broadband luminescence performance is still of great interest in the fields of lighting, solar cells, tunable lasers, and optical amplifiers. Here, via a melt-quenching method, a series of bismuth (Bi)-doped germanium-borate glasses with composition of 40GeO 2 –25B 2 O 3 –25Gd 2 O 3 –10La 2 O 3 – x Bi 2 O 3 have been prepared, in which multiple Bi active centers can be stabilized simultaneously. Dual-modulating modes of visible (380-750 nm) and near-infrared (NIR) (1000-1600 nm) broadband photoemissions were effectively controlled under flexible excitation scheme. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra at low temperature 10-298 K were appropriately employed to interpret such an unusual wide visible emission band. To further illustrate the origin of NIR component, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurement was carried out. It is demonstrated experimentally that the visible emission mainly originates from the collective contribution of the 3 P 1 / 3 P 0 1 S 0 transitions of Bi 3+ , while the broadband NIR luminescence should be related to the formation of low valent Bi + and (or) Bi 0 centers. This work may help to enhance the knowledge of the complex luminescence mechanism for the Bi species and it also enables such transparent glass materials to be a promising candidate for the multifunctional tunable light source.

Dual-Tuning Azole-Based Ionic Liquids for Reversible CO2 Capture from Ambient Air

Kaili Wang,Zhaowei Zhang,Shenyao Wang,Lili Jiang,Haoran Li,Congmin Wang

Graphical CO 2 absorption capacity, desirable absorption enthalpy and excellent reversibility were achieved through dual-tuning azole-based ionic liquids for CO 2 capture from ambient air A strategy of tuning azole-based ionic liquids for reversible CO 2 capture from ambient air was reported. Through tuning the basicity of anion as well as the type of cation, an ideal azole-based ionic liquid with both high CO 2 capacity and excellent stability was synthesized, which exhibited a highest single-component isotherm uptake of 2.17 mmol/g at the atmospheric CO 2 concentration of 0.4 mbar at 30 °C, even in the presence of water. The bound CO 2 can be released by relatively mild heating of the IL-CO 2 at 80 °C, which makes it promising for energy-efficient CO 2 desorption and sorbent regeneration, leading to excellent reversibility. To the best of our knowledge, these azole-based ionic liquids are superior to other adsorbent materials for direct air capture due to their dual-tunable properties and high CO 2 capture efficiency, offering a new prospect for efficient and reversible direct air capture technologies.

Activation–retardation in sol–gel reactions for additive manufacturing of transparent poly(methylsilsesquioxane) aerogels

Gao Mengyue,Zhang Junyan,Xu Chengjian,Yu Xiaoxiao,Chen Linfeng,Zheng Junjie,Zuo Weiwei,Zhang Xinhai,Cheng Yanhua,Zhu Meifang

Coupling superior thermal insulation performance with high transparency for solar transmission and excellent processability in aerogels is a challenging yet promising subject. Here, we report a direct ink writing strategy to create transparent polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ) aerogels from gel inks with desired rheology, by merely using acid-base dual modulators to achieve “activation–retardation” of polycondensation reaction. The printed aerogels are pure PMSQ, have a transmittance of 97% in the visible-near infrared range, thermal conductivity (16.2 mW m −1 K −1 ) lower than that of still air, and low density (0.08 g cm −3 ). We demonstrate new possibilities of our 3D-printed transparent aerogels, such as device encapsulation for heat insulation and cylindrical cooling shields for lighting.
