Separation membranes with underliquid dual superlyophobicity have recently caused widespread concern due to their switchable separation of oil–water mixtures and emulsions. However, the fabrication of the reported underliquid dual superlyophobic membranes is difficult, and the design of the underliquid dual superlyophobic surface of these membranes is challenging because of their complex surface composition. Theoretically, underliquid dual superlyophobicity is an underliquid Cassie state attainable by the synergy of the underliquid dual lyophobic surface and the construction of a high-roughness surface. Herein, we fabricated an underliquid dual superlyophobic membrane by combining underliquid dual lyophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and TiO2 nanowires. PVDF-modified TiO2 nanowire membranes with underliquid dual superlyophobicity were prepared via a simple adsorption and filtration approach. PVDF was coated onto TiO2 nanowires to form a PVDF layer with a thickness of 6 nm. The PVDF modification provided flexibility to the fragile TiO2 nanowires membrane and changed its wettability from underwater superoleophobicity/underoil superhydrophilicity to underliquid dual superlyophobicity. The PVDF-modified TiO2 nanowires membrane efficiently separated both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. The binary cooperative effect between the TiO2 nanowires and the coated PVDF layer was responsible for the underliquid dual superlyophobicity.

Multifunctional materials for the simultaneous separation of oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions and adsorption of heavy metal ions are urgently needed for treating industrial wastewater with complex composition; however, at present these materials are strictly limited to a single function. To meet the above demand, a 3D polystyrene–divinylbenzene–trimethylolpropane triacrylate/polyethyleneimine (P(St-D-T)/PEI 20 ) porous material with underliquid dual superlyophobicity was designed and prepared by the high internal phase emulsion polymerization one-pot method. Based on a structural design strategy involving the combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, hydrophilic and cationic PEI components were chemically grafted onto the surface of the hydrophobic P(St-D-T) porous material through a 1,4-conjugate addition reaction, endowing the material with underliquid dual superlyophobicity and metal ion-chelating coordination groups. The as-prepared material could continuously separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, with corresponding separation efficiencies of 99.4 % and 97.4 %, along with separation fluxes of 2543 and 8363 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 , respectively. The material also possessed excellent mechanical stability and outstanding chemical corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the P(St-D-T)/PEI 20 porous material could adsorb Cu 2+ in water through metal ion chelation, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 190.2 mg/g. This study provides a new approach to prepare a porous material with underliquid dual superlyophobicity for the treatment of complex oily wastewater.

Separation membranes with under-liquid dual-superlyophobicity have attractive features owing to their switchable separation of oil/water emulsions and mixtures. However, due to the thermodynamic contradiction, there are great challenges in the preparation of underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic membranes. Herein, we report a bioinspired accurate-deposition strategy to fabricate the under-liquid dual-superlyphobic polypropylene melt blown (PPMB) membrane integrated with photocatalysis self-cleaning property. For the first time, we found that UV oxidized gallic acid (UGA) can react with polyethyleneimine (PEI) rapidly to form unique coral-like three-dimensional micro-/nanoscale structures, which have a vital effect on the membrane under-liquid dual-superlyophobicity. Meanwhile, using UGA/PEI coating as an intermediate adhesive layer, a novel, green and fast coating method for tightly anchoring titanate nanotubes (TNTs) on the PPMB membranes was developed. Only driven by gravity, the membrane showed extraordinary ability for switchable oil/water mixtures separation with high fluxes above 12,000 L m −2 h −1 , and high separation efficiencies all greater than 99.9%. For switchable separation of emulsions, the as-prepared membrane still performed a high permeating flux above 2500 L m −2 h −1 under gravity. Moreover, when the membrane was fouled by continuous surfactant-stabilized emulsions, the photocatalysis self-cleaning property made the regeneration of the membrane green and environmentally friendly.

Surfaces exhibiting under-liquid dual superlyophobicity (combined underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity) hold immense potential for intelligent oil/water separation systems, yet their realization remains thermodynamically constrained. Herein, we proposed an interfacial hydrophilic/hydrophobic chain regulation strategy that synergistically constructed an under-liquid dual superlyophobicity coating via integrating dynamic interfacial chain reorganization with multiscale structural. By programmatically regulating hydrophobic chain lengths in amphiphilic molecules, precise control over the adaptive conformational switching of self-assembled monolayers on hierarchically nanostructured substrates was achieved to tune membrane macroscopic wettability. The coating exhibits reversible wettability transitions between underoil superhydrophobic and underwater superoleophobicity, which is consistent with the dynamic molecular reconfiguration of environment-responsive molecular chains. Consequently, the coated-porous membrane, with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity, exhibits over 99 % separation efficiency for light/heavy oil/water mixtures and emulsions, especially in long-term on-demand separation of emulsions. This practical and simple strategy provides a versatile platform for developing smart materials for on-demand treatment of complex oily wastewater.
