Vanadium-Doped Heterogeneous Bimetallic Phosphides Derived from Layered Double Hydroxides for Saline Water Splitting

Yixuan Li,Jiahui Jiang,Qihao Wu,Yuying Feng,Zhongxu Chen,Guancheng Xu,Li Zhang

The development of energy- and time-saving synthetic methods to prepare bifunctional and high stability catalysts are vital for overall water splitting. Here, V-doped nickel-iron hydroxide precursor by etching NiFe foam (NFF) at room temperature with dual chloride solution (“NaCl-VCl3”), is obtained then phosphating to obtain V-Ni 2 P-FeP/NFF as efficient bifunctional (oxygen/hydrogen exchange reaction, OER/HER) electrocatalysts, denoted as NFF(V, Na)-P. The NFF(V, Na)-P requires only 185 and 117 mV overpotentials to reach 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER. When used as a catalyst for water splitting in a full cell, it can be stably sustained for more than 1000 h in alkaline brine electrolysis at both current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm −2 . In situ Raman analyses and density functional theory (DFT) show that the V-doping-induced surface remodeling generates hydroxyl oxides as the true catalytic active centers, which not only enhances the reaction kinetics, but also reduces the free energy change in the rate-determining step. This work provides a cost-effective substrate self-derivation method to convert commercial NFF into a powerful catalyst for electrolytic brine, offering a unique route to the development of efficient electrocatalysts for saline water splitting.

Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance of Hematite Photoanode by Decorating NiCoP Nanoparticles Through a Facile Spin Coating Method

Sun Zijun,He Xiong,Liu Jinghua,Liu Baosheng,Li Hongda,Jia Xiaobo,Yu Zhiqiang,Chang Haixin

Abstract Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is a potential photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but its short hole diffusion length and low water oxidation kinetics prevent its practical application. In general, the hole transport rate and the water oxidation kinetics could be improved by modifying the oxygen evolution cocatalysts (OECs) in the proper way. In this work, we designed and synthesized a bimetallic phosphides NiCoP nanoparticles (NPs) modified (Ti, Zr)-codoped hematite photoanode (TZ-H) by a facile spin coating method to achieve the uniform and close interface contact of semiconductor/OECs. Under the optimal conditions, the as-prepared photoanode exhibits high and stable PEC performance with a current density of 2.38 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is one of the best performances of noble-metal-free hematite-based photoanodes for water oxidation. Moreover, the surface efficiency of charge separation is improved by NiCoP modification, which is increased from 59% to 91% at 1.23 V vs. RHE and reached nearly 99% at higher potential. This work not only proves that NiCoP NPs are outstanding OECs but also provides a new strategy for the design of noble-metal-free semiconductor/OECs photoanodes with high-quality interface contact. Bimetallic phosphide decorated Mo–BiVO4 for significantly improved photoelectrochemical activity and stability

Jie Qi,Dechao Kong,Danyang Liu,Lun Pan,Ying Chen,Xiangwen Zhang,Ji-Jun Zou

Bismuth vanadate photoanode has shown great potential for photoelectrochemical (PEC) catalysis, but it needs to be further modified because of its relatively low charge-separation efficiency and poor stability. Herein, the bimetallic phosphide NiCoP decorated Mo–BiVO4 is fabricated through the electrodeposition and drop-casting method, which significantly improves the charge separation and surface oxidation reaction. Therefore, the fabricated NiCoP/Mo–BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a low onset potential of 0.21 V (vs. RHE) and high photocurrent of 3.21 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which is 3.12 times higher than that of pure BiVO4. Importantly, the decoration of NiCoP significantly improve the stability of BiVO4 photoanode.

Bimetallic NixFe2–xP cocatalyst with tunable electronic structure for enhanced photocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation coupled with H2 evolution over red phosphorus

Shuang Li,Haili Lin,Xuemei Jia,Xin Jin,Qianlong Wang,Xinyue Li,Shifu Chen,Jing Cao

Although bimetallic phosphide cocatalysts have attracted considerable interest in photocatalysis research owing to their advantageous thermodynamic characteristics, superstable and efficient cocatalysts have rarely been produced through the modulation of their structure and composition. In this study, a series of bimetallic nickel-iron phosphide (Ni x Fe 2– x P, where 0 < x < 2) cocatalysts with controllable structures and overpotentials were designed by adjusting the atomic ratio of Ni/Fe onto nonmetallic elemental red phosphorus (RP) for the photocatalytic selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) coupled with hydrogen production. The catalysts exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic activity for benzaldehyde and a high H 2 yield. The RP regulated by bimetallic phosphide cocatalysts (Ni x Fe 2– x P) demonstrated higher photocatalytic oxidation-reduction activity than that regulated by monometallic phosphide cocatalysts (Ni 2 P and Fe 2 P). In particular, the RP regulated by Ni 1.25 Fe 0.75 P exhibited the best photocatalytic performance. In addition, experimental and theoretical calculations further illustrated that Ni 1.25 Fe 0.75 P, with the optimized electronic structure, possessed good electrical conductivity and provided strong adsorption and abundant active sites, thereby accelerating electron migration and lowering the reaction energy barrier of RP. This finding offers valuable insights into the rational design of highly effective cocatalysts aimed at optimizing the photocatalytic activity of composite photocatalysts.

Preparation and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution of bimetallic phosphates (NiFe)2P/NF

Bo Yu,Yan Li,Xiang-Nan Fu,Lei Yu,Hu-Dai Fu,Yan-Xin Cao,Zhi-Hong Chen

The energy and environmental crisis pose a great challenge to human development in the 21st century. The design and development of clean and renewable energy and the solution for environmental pollution have become a hotspot in the current research. Based on the preparation of transition metal phosphates, transition metals were used as raw materials, Prussian blue-like NiFe(CN) 6 as a precursor, which was in situ grown on nickel foam (NF) substrate. After low temperature phosphating treatment, a bimetallic phosphide electrocatalyst (NiFe) 2 P/NF was prepared on NF substrate. Using 1 mol·L −1 KOH solution as a basic electrolyte, based on the electrochemical workstation of a three-electrode system, the electrochemical catalytic oxygen evolution performance of the material was tested and evaluated. Experiments show that (NiFe) 2 P/NF catalyst has excellent oxygen evolution performance. In an alkaline medium, the overpotential required to obtain the catalytic current density of 10 mA·cm −2 is only 220 mV, and the Tafel slope is 67 mV·dec −1 . This is largely due to: (1) (NiFe)2p/NF nanocatalysts were well dispersed on NF substrates, which increased the number of active sites exposed; (2) the hollow heterostructure of bimetallic phosphates promotes the electron interaction between (NiFe) 2 P and NF, increased the rate of charge transfer, and the electrical conductivity of the material is improved; and (3) theoretical calculations show that (NiFe) 2 P/NF hollow heterostructure can effectively reduce the dissociation barrier of water, promote the dissociation of water; furthermore, the kinetic reaction rate of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution is accelerated. Meanwhile, the catalyst still has high activity and high stability in 30 wt% concentrated alkali solution. Therefore, the construction of (NiFe) 2 P/NF electrocatalysts enriches the application of non-noble metal nanomaterials in the field of oxygen production from electrolytic water.

Bimetallic Flower-like NiCoP Encapsulated in an N-Doped Carbon Shell with Enhanced Lithium Storage Properties

Haoyu Tian,Lingyu Zhao,Linlin Wang,Zijie Xia,Wenqi Tan,Zheng Jiao

It continues to be a challenge to design innovative NiCoP composite anode materials to further improve rate capacity. In this work, bimetallic flower-like NiCoP encapsulated in an N-doped carbon shell (designated as NiCoP@NC) as a high-rate capable anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) was successfully designed and synthesized. The novel structure design combines the advantages of flower-like NiCoP (core) and N-doped carbon (shell). Flower-like NiCoP offers numerous interface and redox reaction sites for improving lithium storage, while the N-doped carbon shell effectively buffers volume expansion and enhances electrical conductivity. The synergistic effect between NiCoP and the N-doped carbon shell proposes a marvelous high-rate capacity (320 mA h/g even at 5 A/g) and a good cycle life with high reversible capacity (369.8 mA h/g for 700 cycles at 3 A/g with 81% retention). An investigation of kinetics performance shows that the introduction of the N-doped carbon shell enhances the charge transfer, and the pseudocapacitive behavior dominates the rapid Li+storage of the NiCoP@NC electrode.Keywords:Li-ion batteries (LIBs);anode materials;transition bimetal phosphide;N-doped carbon shell

Engineering electron redistribution of bimetallic phosphates with CeO2 enables high-performance overall water splitting

Xin Guo,Menggang Li,Longyu Qiu,Fenyang Tian,Lin He,Shuo Geng,Yequn Liu,Ying Song,Weiwei Yang,Yongsheng Yu

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with Pt-like electronic structures are anticipated to be potential candidates for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis. However, the strong binding strength between metallic active sites in TMPs and intermediates hinders the enhancement of their electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we used surface CeO 2 -decorated strategy to regulate surface electron distribution of bimetallic phosphides and achieve the enhanced HER activity. Taking NiCoP nanowire arrays as an example, the surface-modified CeO 2 nanoparticles (CeO 2 -NiCoP) make the surface electrons redistribute, promoting the transfer of electrons from NiCoP to CeO 2 . As a result, the d -band center of metal active sites in CeO 2 -NiCoP is negatively shifted, resulting in the optimized binding strength with H intermediates. Therefore, CeO 2 -NiCoP exhibits significantly enhanced HER catalytic activity with low overpotentials of 84, 202 and 242 mV at the current densities of 10, 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively, much lower than those of NiCoP counterparts ( ƞ 10  = 142 mV, ƞ 500  = 349 mV, ƞ 1000  = 427 mV). Furthermore, we extend this surface electron redistribution strategy to other bimetallic phosphides and similar trends are observed. Finally, a double-electrode electrolyzer based on CeO 2 -NiCoP is assembled to achieve a low cell voltage of 1.80 V at a current density of 1000 mA cm −2 under simulated industrial conditions, as well as excellent stability. This work provides a feasible method to design highly active and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting via regulating electronic structure of TMPs, and enlightens a new mentality in terms of designing surface active sites of catalysts.

Designing N-doped graphene-like supported highly dispersed bimetallic NiCoP NPs as an efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation

Jiabo Wang,Yalin Fu,Peng Zhang,Jie Zhang,Xusen Ma,Jibo Zhang,Li Chen

Electrocatalysts with a high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity are very important for electrochemical water oxidation, but they are also challenging. In this study, N-doped graphene-like supported highly dispersed bimetallic NiCoP NPs as an efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation were prepared by using cation exchange resin as a carbon source and by loading cobalt and nickel on D001 by a high-temperature calcination method. The designed electrocatalyst with bimetallic phosphide as the active center shows excellent OER catalytic performance, with an overpotential of 324 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a corresponding Tafel slope of 97.28 mV dec−1. The increase in NiCoP-3@GL activity may be due to the increase in surface area (933.49 m2 g−1) caused by the irregular morphology, rich interface contact, and porous structure. In addition, the strong combination of NiCoP and GL improves the structural stability and durability of the electrocatalyst. After 5000 cyclic voltammetry tests, the performance of the catalyst decreased by 16.9 %. This work provides a new idea for designing efficient bimetallic phosphide electrocatalysts.

Optimized bimetallic nickel-iron phosphides with rich defects as enhanced electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Wen-Kun Gao,Jing-Qi Chi,Zhong-Bing Wang,Jia-Hui Lin,Da-Peng Liu,Jing-Bin Zeng,Jian-Feng Yu,Lei Wang,Yong-Ming Chai,Bin Dong

Exploring low-cost and outstanding bimetallic phosphides to substitute noble metals as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media is essential for renewable energy technologies. Herein, bimetallic nickel-iron phosphides nanoparticles (P-NiFe-800 NPs) with rich defects have been synthesized through gas annealing at 800 °C and phosphorization using uniform nickel-iron nanocubes (NiFe NCs) as precursor. At optimized calcination temperature, the obtained P-NiFe-800 NPs are composed of uniform nanoparticles with the rough surface, which suggests the larger surface area and more exposed rich active sites than other samples for OER. The introduction of P element to binary nickel-iron metals can optimize the crystalline and electronic structures of NiFe NCs and thus enhance electrocatalytic properties . Owing to the distinct morphological structure and synergistic effect between nickel-iron and phosphorus, P-NiFe-800 NPs demonstrate superior electrocatalytic activities for OER with lower overpotential of 270.1 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , smaller Tafel slope of 39 mV dec −1 , lower electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) value, bigger determined double-layer capacitance (C dl ) of 2130 uF cm −2 and prominent stability than NiFe NCs, NiFe-600 NPs, NiFe-700 NPs, NiFe-800 NPs, NiFe-900 NPs, P-NiFe NCs, P-NiFe-600 NPs, P-NiFe-700 NPs and P-NiFe-900 NPs. The optimized phosphorization is helpful for fabricating the bimetallic phosphides as efficient catalysts for OER.

Monodispersed bi-metallic phosphide anchoring on CNTs with enhanced stability and electrocatalytic HER performance at a wide PH range

Chenglong Xie,Xinxin Zhang,Haitao Yu,Ying Xie

Designing efficient, stable, and inexpensive catalysts for water splitting was critical for efficient, sustainable energy conversion. Here, a one-pot hot-colloidal route was adopted to synthesize the mono-dispersed NiCoP catalyst with a particle size of∼5.0 nm. To further improve the structural stability and electronic conductivity of the catalysts, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced. The theoretical calculations suggested that a synergistic effect between Ni and Co in the NiCoP catalyst not only leads to an obvious charge redistribution but also facilitates the electron transfer from the surface to the reactant intermediates, being responsible for the optimal ΔG H* of the catalyst. As a result, NiCoP/CNTs exhibited good HER performance both in acidic and alkaline electrolytes . The overpotentials under alkaline and acidic electrolytes were 110 mV and114 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. In comparison with pristine Ni 2 P(Co 2 P), the overpotential of NiCoP/CNTs in acidic and alkaline electrolytes was reduced by 50(24) and 62(30) mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Even at the current densities of 50 and 200 mA cm −2 , NiCoP/CNTs still retains a much lower overpotential than other samples. Our results revealed the important roles of the synergistic effect between the transition metals and the interaction between CNTs and the phosphides, which provides some useful information for the design and optimization of relevant HER catalysts.

N-enriched porous carbon encapsulated bimetallic phosphides with hierarchical structure derived from controlled electrodepositing multilayer ZIFs for electrochemical overall water splitting

Lijun Yang,Lei Zhang

Cost-effective transition metal-carbon-based hybrids have been widely dedicated to water splitting. Herein, a new three dimensional N-enriched holey carbon layers encapsulated bimetallic phosphides (CoNiP@CN) was synthesized by in situ growth, pyrolysis and phosphorization of CoNi mixed zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs)@ZIF-8 films on Ni foam. CoNiP@CN/NF exhibited smaller overpotentials, lower charge transfer resistance and considerable stability for electrocatalysis. The better performance was attributed to the high conductivity of bimetallic phosphides and N-doped porous carbon, the maximum utilization of active sites on 3D conductive substrate and the protection of bimetallic phosphides by N-doped carbon layers. As an integrated high-performance non-noble electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, the CoNiP@CN/NF requires only 1.59 V@30 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution, which is comparable to many other non-noble metal catalysts. This work highlights the construction highly efficient transition metal-carbon-based electrocatalyst derived from well-defined ZIF precursor, promoting the development of low-cost non-noble metal hybrids in energy chemistry.
