Synthesis of nitrile-containing reactive phenolphthalein polyaryletherketone and synergistic toughening research on the toughening of epoxy resin—phase structure, mechanical and thermal properties

Jiawei Liu,Tongjia Zhang,Shoutian Qiu,Lixin Song,Guangyuan Zhou,Honghua Wang

The introduction of reactive groups capable of participating in epoxy cross-linking into the molecular chains of conventional thermoplastic toughening agents effectively enhances the interfacial compatibility between thermoplastic and thermosetting resins, resulting in a significant improvement in system impact toughness. Building on this approach, this study innovatively incorporates polar nitrile groups into the molecular chains of thermoplastic polyaryletherketone agents containing terminal reactive groups, thereby exploring the synergistic mechanism between reactive and nitrile groups. A systematic investigation is conducted to examine how variations in the nitrile group content and the addition level of the toughening agent influence the toughening effect of epoxy resin. Additionally, the influence of different epoxy system phase structures on mechanical properties is assessed. Experimental results reveal that when the toughening agent PEKCN-OH is added at less than 10 parts per hundred resin (phr), the epoxy system exhibits a sea-island morphology, with the impact strength decreasing with increasing nitrile group content. When no nitrile groups are present (using PEKC-OH resin), the impact strength reaches 23.5 kJ m−2, representing a 97% increase compared to the control without the toughening agent. For addition levels exceeding 10 phr, the system transitions to a bicontinuous structure. In this regime, the impact strength initially increases before decreasing as the nitrile group content increases. At a nitrile group content of 50% (using PEKCN-OH-2 resin), the impact strength reaches 25.8 kJ m−2, representing a 117% increase. Importantly, the addition of these toughening agents not only prevents a reduction in the service temperature of the epoxy resin but also enhances its thermal stability. In conclusion, the PEKCN-OH developed in this study serves as a highly efficient, easily prepared reactive thermoplastic toughening agent suitable for industrial production. It holds great promise for use in demanding industrial applications, including aerospace, electronics and electrical appliances, and automotive manufacturing. The findings are expected to make significant contributions to material innovation and product performance optimization in these sectors.

Synthesis and Modifying Effect of Oligoesters with Reactive Groups Based on Epoxy Aliphatic Resin and Oligoester Dicarboxylic Acids

Xiangli Meng,Qing He,Tetiana Hryhorenko

The purpose of this research is to study the modifying effect of oligoesters with reactive groups based on epoxy aliphatic resin and oligoesters with dicarboxylic acids with different molecular weights (adipic, sebacic, and tetradecanedioic acids). Adducts of oligoesters with terminal epoxy groups and epoxy resin (ER) were prepared. The structures of the intermediates and modifiers were characterized by FTIR,1H NMR,13C NMR, TGA, DMA, and SEM. The single-phase structure of the modified polymers was confirmed using the DMA, TGA, and SEM methods. It was shown that for modified polymers, a pattern of plastic deformation is observed, in contrast to the brittle destruction of the initial polymer. It has been found that elongation at break, impact strength, work of fracture, and shear strength increase throughout the studied concentration range (at 50% modifier content, elongation at break and shear strength increase by ~450% and ~150%, respectively, compared with an unmodified polymer). The results obtained demonstrate that synthesized modifiers with reactive epoxy groups can contribute to the creation of new cold-cured epoxy materials with an improved complex of properties for various industries.

Reactive modified curcumin for high-fastness nonaqueous SC-CO2 dyeing of cotton fabric

Wang Mingyue,Liu Mao,Zhao Hongjuan,Xiong Xiaoqing,Zheng Laijiu

Abstract Modified curcumin, which has the advantages of low toxicity, high solubility, and little color change after modification, is very suitable for nonaqueous supercritical carbon dioxide cotton dyeing. However, the existing curcumin modification technology focuses on improving its solubility. Modified curcumin is directly adsorbed onto cotton fabrics, and the main interaction forces are van der Waals forces, which causes the poor fastness of modified curcumin to dyed cotton fabrics. In this study, reactive groups (hydroxyalkyls) were introduced into curcumin to enhance its fastness to cotton fabrics. The results showed that, similar to alkyl groups, hydroxyalkyl groups can enhance the color depth of dyed cotton fabrics by elevating the solubility of modified curcumin in supercritical carbon dioxide. The higher the solubility of modified curcumin in supercritical carbon dioxide was, the higher the K/S value of the dyed cotton fabric. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups on the modified curcumin could form ether bonds with the hydroxyl groups on cotton fabrics. Therefore, the washing and rubbing fastness of hydroxyalkyl-curcumin-dyed cotton fabric was better than that of alkyl-curcumin-dyed cotton fabric. Graphic abstract

Preparation of Hydroxyl-Terminated Phenolphthalein Polyether Sulfone and Its Application in Toughening Epoxy Resin

Jiawei Liu,Xingdi Zhang,Honghua Wang,Lixin Song,Guangyuan Zhou

The introduction of reactive groups that participate in epoxy cross-linking into the molecular chain of conventional thermoplastic tougheners can improve interfacial compatibility between thermoplastic and thermoset resins, thereby improving the impact toughness of the system. In this work, a series of hydroxyl-terminated phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (PESC-OH) and chlorine-terminated phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (PESC-Cl) resins were prepared, and the molecular structure, molecular weight, and thermal properties of the polymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). To assess the toughening effect on epoxy, different molecular weights and different quantities of PESC-OH were incorporated into the epoxy resin/methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (E51/MTHPA) system, respectively. The curing process of the E51/MTHPA/PESC-OH blend was examined using DSC, and the curing mechanism was investigated. Subsequently, the thermal and mechanical properties of the toughened system were characterized, with a scanning electron microscope employed to elucidate the phase structure and toughening principle. After curing, phase separation was observed within the system, and also the presence of hydroxyl end-groups enhanced the interface compatibility between PESC and E51/MTHPA, thereby improving the system’s impact strength. In summary, PESC-OH emerges as a reactive thermoplastic toughening agent that is feasible to prepare and has potential practical applications.
