The removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from seawater before the reverse osmosis (RO) processes is crucial for alleviating organic fouling of RO membranes. However, research is still insufficiently developed in the comparison of the effectiveness of integrating coagulation with ultrafiltration (UF) or sand filtration (SF) in the pretreatment stage of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) for the removal of DOM. In this study, we investigated the effect of pretreatment technologies on RO fouling caused by DOM in seawater, including the integration of coagulation and sand filtration (C-S pretreatment) and the integration of coagulation and ultrafiltration (C-U pretreatment). Both integrated pretreatments achieved comparable DOM removal rates (70.2% for C-U and 69.6% for C-S), and C-S exhibited enhanced removal of UV-absorbing compounds. Although C-U was more proficient in reducing the silt density index (below 2) compared to C-S (above 3) and improved the elimination of humic acid-like organics, it left a higher proportion of tyrosine-protein-like organics, soluble microbial by-product-like organics, and finer organics in the effluent, leading to the formation of a dense cake layer on RO membrane and a higher flux decline. Therefore, suitable technologies should be selected according to specific water conditions to efficiently mitigate RO membrane fouling.

In this study, the integrated process of reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED) is developed to concentrate the dilute solution of acetic acid (HAc). The key parameters, such as RO pressure, ED voltage, and ED volume ratio, were systematically evaluated and the operation conditions of the processes were optimized. Under an operating pressure of 5 MPa, RO can enrich low-concentration HAc from 1.5 wt.% to 6.5% wt.% and the energy consumption is 0.37 kW·h·kg−1. Next, RO-concentrated water was used as the ED feed and the first ED with a volume ratio of the concentrated to dilute chamber of 1:4 was carried out under the conditions of a flow rate of 30 L/h and an operating voltage of 12 V; the HAc concentration reached 12.50 wt.%. The second ED with a volume ratio of 1:5 made the final HAc concentration reach 19.02 wt.%. This study shows that using RO-concentrated water instead of initial water for the ED process can reduce water energy consumption and cost markedly, and the RO–ED integrated process can efficiently pre-enrich low-concentration HAc aqueous solution, and the enriched HAc concentration meets the requirements for the further distillation of HAc.

In the production of acrylic acid, the concentration of acrylic acid solution from the adsorption tower was low, which would lead to significant energy consumption in the distillation process to purify acrylic acid, along with the production of a large amount of wastewater. Reverse osmosis (RO) was proposed to concentrate the acrylic acid aqueous solution taken from a specific tray in the absorption tower. The effects of operating conditions on the permeate flux and acid retention were studied with two commercial RO membranes (SWC5 and SWC6). When the operating pressure was 4 MPa and the temperature was 25 °C, the permeate fluxes of two membranes were about 20 L·m−2·h−1. The acrylic acid and acetic acid retentions were about 80% and 78%, respectively. After being immersed in the acid solutions for several months, the characteristics of the two membranes were tested to evaluate their acid resistance. After six months of exposure to the acid solution containing 2.5% acrylic acid and 2.5% acetic acid, the retentions of acrylic acid and acetic acid were decreased by 5.7% and 4.1% for SWC5 and 4.9% and 2.2% for SWC6, respectively. The changes of membrane surface morphology and chemical composition showed the hydrolysis of some amide bonds. Keywords:reverse osmosis (RO);concentration;acrylic acid;acetic acid;membrane stability

We report a novel pathway for preparing polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane with high permselectivity by incorporating tannic acid (TA) into the polysulfone (PSf) support. The support and RO membrane were characterized systematically. The results showed that (1) the support surface was enriched with TA due to the high hydrophilcity of TA and (2) TA endowed the RO membrane with a thinner and more compact PA active layer. The influencing mechanism of TA on the PA layer formation was discussed. TA affected the formation of PA layer through changing the m-phenylenediamine (MPD) molecules absorption behavior and the formation of the nascent film. The RO membrane desalination performances for both brackish water and seawater were evaluated. Due to the thinner and more compact PA active layer, PSf/TA-RO (the membrane prepared on PSf/TA support) possessed a higher rejection and a comparative flux compared to PSf-RO (the membrane prepared on PSf support). This work provides an effective way for preparing high performance RO membranes via utilizing support to tailor the aqueous phase monomer absorption and the formation of the nascent film.

A reverse osmosis (RO) membrane with a high water permeance and salt rejection is needed to reduce the energy requirement for desalination and water treatment. However, improving water permeance while maintaining a high rejection of the polyamide RO membrane remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a rigid–flexible coupling strategy to prepare a high-performance RO membrane through introducing monoamine with a flexible aliphatic ring (i.e., piperidine (PPR)) into the interfacial polymerization (IP) system of trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD). The resulted polyamide film consists of a robust aromatic skeleton and soft aliphatic-ring side chain, where the aliphatic ring optimizes the microstructure of polyamide network at a molecular level. The obtained membranes thereby showed an enhanced water permeance of up to 2.96 L·m−2h−1bar−1, nearly a 3-fold enhancement compared to the control group, meanwhile exhibiting an ultrahigh rejection toward NaCl (99.4%), thus successfully overcoming the permeability–selectivity trade-off limit. Furthermore, the mechanism of the enhanced performance was investigated by molecular simulation. Our work provides a simple way to fabricate advanced RO membranes with outstanding performance. Keywords:reverse osmosis;interfacial polymerization;molecular structure;high permeance

Superior permeability and high selectivity are crucial performances criterion for reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Inspired by aquaporin-based biomimetic membranes, the loose liposomes as artificial water channels were prepared by thin-layer hydration method with lyso -phospholipids (C14lyso) and cholesterol followed by incorporating liposomes into the polyamide selective layer via in situ interfacial polymerization to fabricate liposomes-based RO membranes (TFC-C14lyso). Stopped-flow tests verified that C14lyso liposomes possess fast water transportability and the effect of C14lyso liposomes on the intrinsic structure of the polyamide selective layer was comprehensively explored. Meanwhile, the structure and performance of the TFC-C14lyso membranes could be regulated by varying the liposome concentrations. As a result, TFC-C14lyso-2 (the concentration of C14lyso liposomes is 0.25 mg/mL) presented an optimal separation performance, showing high water permeance of 3.80 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and NaCl rejection of 98.6 %. Moreover, the separation mechanism regarding the enhanced permeability of TFC-C14lyso-2 was profoundly revealed via the structure and performance comparison with TFC-DOPC fabricated by incorporating dense DOPC liposomes into its PA selective layer. Building on these studies, our work may provide a facile and versatile pathway for designing advanced membranes in desalination.

Thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, fabricated by interfacial polymerization, have achieved significant success in addressing the global water scarcity. Over the past three decades, the camphor sulfonic acid (CSA)/triethylamine (TEA) has been widely used in fabrication of TFC RO membranes. However, the mechanism of this unique formula remains elusive and contentious. In this work, for the first time, deciphering that introducing CSA/TEA into the aqueous phase has negligible impact on the selective polyamide (PA) layer but facilitate the aqueous solution impregnating of porous polysulfone (PSf) support. Specifically, the acidic CSA significantly hinders amine diffusion yet preserves the porosity of the PSf support during high-temperature curing. TEA is essential in modulating the pH changes and balancing the monomer diffusion rate that results from CSA. The COMSOL simulations have further elucidated that the presence of an aqueous solution within the porous support can mitigate the thermal expansion of the PSf, consequently inhibiting the shrinkage of surface pores. The TFC membrane demonstrated a substantial improvement in water permeance due to the preservation of its pore structure. The obtained TFC membrane demonstrated an exceptional NaCl rejection of 99.3 % and a high water flux of 76.8 L m –2 h −1 (2000 ppm NaCl, 15.5 bar), exceeding that of the state-of-the-art TFC RO membranes. Moreover, the RO membrane manifested with long-term stability and good fouling resistance. The mechanistic insights have important implications to more efficient membrane-based desalination and water reuse, thereby reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental carbon footprint.

Enhancing the water permeation while maintaining high salt rejection of existing reverse osmosis (RO) membranes remains a considerable challenge. Herein, we proposed to introduce polymer of intrinsic microporosity, PIM-1, into the selective layer of reverse osmosis membranes to break the trade-off effect between permeability and selectivity. A water-soluble a-LPIM-1 of low-molecular-weight and hydroxyl terminals was synthesized. These designed characteristics endowed it with high solubility and reactivity. Then it was mixed with m -phenylenediamine and together served as aqueous monomer to react with organic monomer of trimesoyl chloride via interfacial polymerization. The characterization results exhibited that more “nodule” rather than “leaf” structure formed on RO membrane surface, which indicated that the introduction of the high free-volume of a-LPIM-1 with three dimensional twisted and folded structure into the selective layer effectively caused the frustrated packing between polymer chains. In virtue of this effect, even with reduced surface roughness and unchanged layer thickness, the water permeability of prepared reverse osmosis membranes increased 2.1 times to 62.8 L∙m −2 ∙h −1 with acceptable NaCl rejection of 97.6%. This attempt developed a new strategy to break the trade-off effect faced by traditional polyamide reverse osmosis membranes.

The ability to reuse boron and minimize the volume of radioactive waste could be accomplished with modified reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. RO membranes were fabricated via polyethylenimine (PEI) grafting to separate silicon and radionuclides from boron-containing radioactive wastewater . The positively charged RO membrane promoted more efficient removal of nuclides and silicon while the rejection of boron declined from 55.88 % to 41.71 % after modification. Compared with virgin RO membrane, the SF B-Si , SF B-Cs , and SF B-Co of the modified RO membranes increased from 6.02, 5.16, and 12.62–29.52, 61.91, and 547.15, respectively. SF B-Si , SF B-Cs , and SF B-Co of the simulated RO system with modified RO membranes further increased to 156.96, 1068.12, and 83617.88, respectively. As a result, permeate water with 433.92 mg L −1 boron, 0.04 mg L −1 silicon, 1.62 μg · L −1 Cs(I), and 0.02 μg · L −1 Co(II) was obtained, which could satisfy radionuclide treatment requirements and allow for the reuse of boron. Overall, modified RO membranes would be able to reuse boron and minimize the volume of discharge of radioactive wastewater.

Silica scalant and organic foulant are rapidly deposited onto the surface of a thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane during the desalination process. The scaling and fouling propensity of the membranes are affected by the properties of the membrane surface. In this work, a sulfonated TFC-RO membrane was prepared with a comonomer of 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (DABS) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD) through an interfacial polymerization process to promote the scaling and fouling resistance. Detailed characterization was carried out to analyze the structure and surface morphology of the fabricated TFC-RO membranes. Compared to the nascent PA TFC-RO membrane, PA-DABS membranes exhibited a smoother, negatively charged, and more hydrophilic surface and showed significantly lower flux decline in both silica scaling and combined scaling–fouling experiments. Moreover, gradient isosurfaces for the interaction indicated a sulfonic group having stronger repulsion with silicic acid than the carboxyl group. Therefore, this work provides new understanding of a simple and efficient design of RO membranes that can be used for desalination of combined mineral-silica and organic-fouling laden water.

The development of high performance reverse osmosis (RO) membranes still remains a big challenge due to not only the trade-off between water flux and salt rejection, but also their easy fouling and chlorine attacking. In this paper, a novel thin-film nanocomposite RO membrane with two-dimensional MXene Ti 3 C 2 T x embedded in the polyamide (PA) layer was fabricated by in-situ interfacial polymerization with m-phenylenediamine aqueous solution and trimesoyl chloride. Due to the outstanding diffusion regulating effect of Ti 3 C 2 T x in accordance with the Fick's first law, the water permeability was elevated to a maximum value of 2.53 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 at a high NaCl salt rejection of 98.5%. Simultaneously, the enhanced anti-fouling, and chlorine resistance of the as-obtained PA-Ti 3 C 2 T x membrane were also obtained, outperforming the pristine PA and other related RO membranes in literature. Especially after a chlorine-resistance test at 10000 ppm h, a high salt rejection of 97.1% for the PA-Ti 3 C 2 T x membrane was still retained. Based on the microstructural observation and mechanism analysis, such an improvement in chlorine resistance was mainly ascribed to the interaction between surface functional groups of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets with active chlorine, which effectively protected the PA matrix from being chlorine attacked. This work illustrates successfully a very new use of Ti 3 C 2 T x to improve the comprehensive performance for water desalination membranes for practical applications.

Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are widely used in the field of water treatment. However, there are inevitably various fouling problems during long-term use. Surface engineering of RO membranes, such as hydrophilic modification, has attracted broad attention for improving the anti-fouling performance. In this work, we constructed a green biomimetic composite modification layer on the surface of polyamide membranes using a dopamine (DA)/tannic acid (TA) co-deposited layer to bridge the polyamide surface and hydrophilic phytic acids (PhA). The DA/TA interlayer could firmly adhere to the RO membranes, reducing the aggregation of DA and providing abundant phenolic hydroxyl sites to graft PhA. Meanwhile, the anchored PhA molecule bearing six phosphate groups could effectively improve the superficial hydrophilicity. The membranes were characterized by the SEM, AFM, XPS, water contact angle test, and zeta potential test. After surface modification, the hydrophilicity, smoothness, and surface electronegativity were enhanced obviously. The flux and rejection of the virgin membrane were 76.05 L·m−2·h−1and 97.32%, respectively. While the modified D2/T4-PhA membrane showed decent permeability with a water flux of 57.37 L·m−2·h−1and a salt rejection of 98.29%. In the dynamic fouling test, the modified RO membranes demonstrated enhanced anti-fouling performance toward serum albumins (BSA), sodium alginates (SA), and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromides (DTAB). In addition, the modified membrane showed excellent stability in the 40 h long-term test.
