Kinetics-Tunable Hydrochromic Luminescence Switching in Rb3TbF6:Eu3+ Perovskite

Jiangkun Chen,Yang Guo,Bing Chen,Weilin Zheng,Xin Zhang,Xiaohe Wei,Yaxin Cao,Hao Suo,Feng Wang

Hydrochromic luminescent materials that are responsive to water or moisture have attracted considerable attention owing to their extensive use in sensing and information security. However, fine-tuning hydrochromic response to water content remains unfulfilled research, posing constraints in the widespread application of hydrochromic luminescence. This study reports a 0D Rb 3 TbF 6 perovskite with highly controllable hydrochromic characteristics. The Rb 3 TbF 6 crystals exhibit a distinct hydrochromic luminescence switching after B-site doping with Eu 3+ , stemming from Rb 3 TbF 6 to Rb 2 TbF 5 transformation that triggers intra-crystal Tb 3+ -to-Eu 3+ energy transfer. Through A-site alkaline metal alloying, the sensitivity of the perovskite to water stimuli is precisely tuned, rendering distinct responses over a wide range of humidity conditions (RH: 1–90% RH) and water levels (v/v: 0.5–55%). As an added benefit, the hydrochromic crystals also show excellent repeatability and photothermal stability. These advances on hydrochromic materials provide exciting opportunities in water detection, humidity sensing, and multi-level information encryption.

Hydro-Photo-Thermo-Responsive Multicolor Luminescence Switching of a Ternary MOF Hybrid for Advanced Information Anticounterfeiting

Jing Cuan,Hui Zhou,Xuefang Huang,Xinhang Cong,You Zhou

Developing smart materials capable of solid-state multicolor photoluminescence (PL) switching in response to multistimuli is highly desirable for advanced anticounterfeiting. Here, a ternary MOF hybrid showing hydro-photo-thermo-responsive multicolor PL switching in the solid state is presented. This hybrid is constructed by co-immobilizing Eu 3+ and methyl viologen (MV) cations within an anionic MOF via the cation-exchange approach. The confined guest cations are well arranged in the framework channels, facilitating the synergistic realization of stimuli-responsive multiple PL color-switching through intermolecular coupling. The hybrid undergoes a rapid and reversible PL color-switching from red to blue upon water simulation, which is achieved by activating the blue emission of the framework linker while simultaneously quenching the Eu 3+ emission. Furthermore, the hybrid displays photo-thermo-responsive PL switching from red to dark. UV-light irradiation or heating triggers the chromic conversion of MV to its colored radical form, which exhibits perfect spectral overlap with Eu 3+ , thus activating Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Eu 3+ to MV radicals and quenching the Eu 3+ emission. Inspired by these results, PL morse patterns are designed and fabricated using a novel triple-level encryption strategy, showcasing the exciting potential of this hybrid in advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Lanthanides-based security inks with reversible luminescent switching and self-healing properties for advanced anti-counterfeiting

Min Gao,Jingfang Li,Diandong Xia,Lijun Jiang,Ning Peng,Sicong Zhao,Guangming Li

The development of advanced luminescent anti-counterfeiting materials with self-healing ability is still a challenging task. Herein, the security inks with reversible luminescent switching and self-healing properties were easily prepared by doping lanthanides complexes into self-healable poly (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonicacid) (PAMPSA) matrix. The security inks exhibited reversible luminescent “on–off” switching in response to “base-acid” vapors, it allowed themselves as good candidates for realizing reversible information decryption and encryption. The confidential information fabricated by security inks could not be identified under daylight and/or UV light, which could only be recognized after the treatment with NH 3 vapor in the presence of UV light. Importantly, the information can be further encrypted and decrypted by HCl vapor and NH 3 vapor, respectively, it can avoid the second leakage of confidential information as well as realize the repeated reading of confidential information. The rational designed multiple encryption strategies were also demonstrated to further improve anti-counterfeiting level. Remarkably, the security inks exhibited good self-healing ability to extend their service life and ensure durability, which is very important for their practical applications. In addition, the obtained inks exhibited excellent stability against UV irradiation, humidity, organic solvents, heating, and rubbing. The inks also exhibited good stability in ambient conditions and can be written on various substrates. The above results indicated that the as-prepared security inks have tremendous potential applications in advanced anti-counterfeiting.

Halogen Engineering and Solvent-Induced Strategies Regulate Structural Transitions and Luminescence Switching of Hybrid Copper(I) Halides

Xia Liu,Lin Yang,Bohan Li,Yan Xu

Copper-based halides have attracted significant attention due to their unique photophysical properties and diverse coordination configurations. However, enhancing water stability and modulating structural transitions in cuprous halide materials remain challenging. In this work, we successfully synthesized three copper(I) halides, (C24H28P)CuBr2 (L1, [C24H28P]+ = hexyltriphenylphosphonium), (C24H28P)2Cu4Br6 (L2), and (C24H28P)2Cu4I6 (L3), via solvent volatilization, demonstrating exceptional water stability even after 27 days of submersion. Crystals L1 and L2 emit yellow and orange light, respectively, under ultraviolet excitation, while L3 emits green light when excited by blue light. A rapid phase transition between L1 and L2 occurs when stimulated with methanol at room temperature. Further exposure of L2 to a NaI solution can result in substitution of Br– ions by I– in [Cu4Br6]2– to form L3. Multimodal anticounterfeiting luminescent labels with high-security levels have been successfully manufactured based on sequential L1 → L2 → L3 phase transition. Moreover, a test paper designed based on L1 can be applied for low-level methanol detection. This work successfully accomplishes the coregulation of structural transformations and luminescence switching in copper(I) halides by combining methanol simulations with halogen substitution strategies, which not only deepens the understanding of the structure–property relationships but also broadens the optical applications of these materials.

Controlling information duration on rewritable luminescent paper based on hybrid antimony (III) chloride/small-molecule absorbates

Zeping Wang,Dingli Xie,Feng Zhang,Jiabing Yu,Xianping Chen,Ching Ping Wong

Controlling the duration that information lasts on paper so that it disappears as desired is crucial for information security. However, this area is rarely studied. Here, we report [TEMA]2SbCl5 (1, TEMA+ = methyltriethylammonium), [TEA]2SbCl5 (2, TEA+ = tetraethylammonium), [TEBA]2SbCl5 (3, TEBA+ = benzyltriethylammonium), and [Ph4P]2SbCl5 (4, Ph4P+ = tetraphenylphosphonium) with structure-dependent reversible photoluminescent switching induced by the absorption and thermal release of small guest molecules including H2O, methanol, and ethylene glycol. Comparing the structural disorder levels, bond lengths, and luminescent Stokes shifts of the compounds aided in understanding their selective absorption behavior. Our results indicated that the information duration on the rewritable paper coated with the title compounds is easily tuned by changing the cation of the compounds, the type of guest molecules, and laser heating power. Our study opens previously unidentified avenues for information security and extends the potential applications of rewritable paper.

Lanthanide-Polyoxometalate-Based Film with Reversible Photochromism and Luminescent Switching Properties for Erasable Inkless Security Printing

Ning Peng,Jingfang Li,Yumei Hua,Sicong Zhao,Guangming Li

Security printing is of the utmost importance in the information era. However, the excessive use of inks and paper still faces many economic and environmental issues. Thus, developing erasable inkless security printing materials is a remarkable strategy to save resources, protect the environment, and improve information security. To this endeavor, a photoresponsive lanthanide-polyoxometalate-doped gelatin film with high transparency was developed through the solution casting method. Attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions between gelatin and lanthanide-polyoxometalate. Absorption spectra, luminescent spectra, and digital images indicated that the film displayed reversible photochromism behavior and was accompanied by luminescent switching property upon exposure to UV irradiation and oxygen (in the dark) alternately, which allowed its potential application as a reprintable medium for inkless security printing. The printed information can be erased upon exposure to oxygen in the dark, and the film can be reused for printing again. The film exhibited excellent erasability, reprintability, renewability, and low toxicity. In addition, multiple encryption strategies were designed to improve information security. This work offers an attractive alternative strategy for constructing a reprintable film for inkless security printing in terms of simplifying the preparation process, saving resources, and protecting the environment.

Stepwise Crystalline Structural Transformation in 0D Hybrid Antimony Halides with Triplet Turn-on and Color-Adjustable Luminescence Switching

Jian-Qiang Zhao,Yue-Yu Ma,Xue-Jie Zhao,Yu-Jia Gao,Zi-Yan Xu,Pan-Chao Xiao,Cheng-Yang Yue,Xiao-Wu Lei

Intelligent stimuli-responsive fluorescence materials are extremely pivotal for fabricating luminescent turn-on switching in solid-state photonic integration technology, but it remains a challenging objective for typical 3-dimensional (3D) perovskite nanocrystals. Herein, by fine-tuning the accumulation modes of metal halide components to dynamically control the carrier characteristics, a novel triple-mode photoluminescence (PL) switching was realized in 0D metal halide through stepwise single-crystal to single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation. Specifically, a family of 0D hybrid antimony halides was designed to exhibit three distinct types of PL performance including nonluminescent [Ph3EtP]2Sb2Cl8 (1), yellow-emissive [Ph3EtP]2SbCl5·EtOH (2), and red-emissive [Ph3EtP]2SbCl5 (3). Upon stimulus of ethanol, 1 was successfully converted to 2 through SC-SC transformation with enhanced PL quantum yield from ~0% to 91.50% acting as “turn-on” luminescent switching. Meanwhile, reversible SC-SC and luminescence transformation between 2 and 3 can be also achieved in the ethanol impregnation–heating process as luminescence vapochromism switching. As a consequence, a new triple-model turn-on and color-adjustable luminescent switching of off–onI–onII was realized in 0D hybrid halides. Simultaneously, wide advanced applications were also achieved in anti-counterfeiting, information security, and optical logic gates. This novel photon engineering strategy is expected to deepen the understanding of dynamic PL switching mechanism and guide development of new smart luminescence materials in cutting-edge optical switchable device.

Advanced Optical Information Encryption Enabled by Polychromatic and Stimuli-Responsive Luminescence of Sb-Doped Double Perovskites

Yijun Zhao,Xingru Yang,Lun Yang,Fangjian Xing,Cihui Liu,Yunsong Di,Guiyuan Cao,Shibiao Wei,Xifeng Yang,Xiaowei Zhang,Yushen Liu,Zhixing Gan

The smart materials with multi-color and stimuli-responsive luminescence are very promising for next generation of optical information encryption and anti-counterfeiting, but these materials are still scarce. Herein, a multi-level information encryption strategy is developed based on the polychromatic emission of Sb-doped double perovskite powders (SDPPs). Cs 2 NaInCl 6 :Sb, Cs 2 KInCl 6 :Sb, and Cs 2 AgInCl 6 :Sb synthesized through coprecipitation methods exhibit broadband emissions with bright blue, cyan, and orange colors, respectively. The information transmitted by specific SDPP is encrypted when different SDPPs are mixed. The confidential information can be decrypted by selecting the corresponding narrowband filter. Then, an encrypted quick response (QR) code with improved security is demonstrated based on this multi-channel selection strategy. Moreover, the three types of SDPPs exhibit three different water-triggered luminescence switching behaviors. The confidential information represented by Cs 2 NaInCl 6 :Sb can be erased/recovered through a simple water spray/drying. Whereas, the information collected from the green channel is permanently erased by moisture, which fundamentally avoids information leakage. Therefore, different encryption schemes can be designed to meet a variety of encryption requirements. The multicolor and stimuli-responsive luminescence greatly enrich the flexibility of optical information encryption, which leaps the level of security and confidentiality.

Component engineering to achieve reversible luminescence switching of tetramethylammonium manganese halides

G. Zheng,Y. Chen,T. Chang,C. Chen,S. Zhang,Y. Wang,Y. Gao,B. Zou,R. Zeng

Metal halide perovskites have attracted extensive attention due to their wide application in many fields such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors , etc. Herein, we separately synthesize green-emitting TMAMnCl 3 and red-emitting TMA 2 MnCl 4 (TMA = tetramethylammonium chloride) single crystals by controlling the feeding ratios of MnCl 2 /TMACl precursors via a slow evaporation crystallization method, respectively. Further, thereversible luminescence switching between TMAMnCl 3 and TMA 2 MnCl 4 single crystals can be achieved by adding corresponding raw MnCl 2 or TMACl precursors due to the transformation of crystal structures. The structural differences between the different coordination environments are found to play a key role to the different optical properties of the two crystal structures. The light-emitting diodes devices prepared based on the two kinds of materials show excellent performance at different currents and voltages. Our research sheds light on controlling the structural transformation and luminescence switching of manganese-based organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites.

Photochromic Spiropyran-Based Dual-Emitting Luminescent Hybrid Films for Dynamic Information Anticounterfeiting

Ziyi Bai,Lei Guo,Di Zhao,Yige Wang

Photoluminescent materials are widely used for information storage and anticounterfeiting, while most of them have the disadvantages of static information performance and weak processability, which is still a challenging task in developing dynamic anticounterfeiting materials with high security levels. Herein, we fabricated a novel photostimuli-responsive dual-emitting luminescent material UPTES-SPn-Tb-hfa, which was obtained by introducing the photochromic molecule spiropyran (SP) and lanthanide complex (Tb-hfa) into a siloxane-polyether matrix using the sol–gel process. Due to the conformation-dependent photochromic fluorescence resonance energy transfer between the Tb-hfa donor and SP acceptor, the ring-closing (SP)/ring-opening (MC) isomerization of the SP unit leads to a reversible luminescence switching in UPTES-SPn-Tb-hfa. This composite material has great potential for advanced anticounterfeiting because of the advantage of rapidly repeatable encryption/decryption for at least 8 times and dynamic luminescent colors within 15 s. In addition, due to its two luminescent centers (Tb3+ and MC), the luminescent color of this material can be regulated by 254 and 365 nm UV-light irradiation, which facilitates the design of multicolored anticounterfeiting labels. Our work presents a novel design methodology to fabricate dynamic anticounterfeiting materials, significantly enhancing the security of anticounterfeiting applications.
