ABSTRACT The multi-functionalization on wood and its derivant has gained more and more attention for its resource-rich, reproducible and biodegradable properties. In this work, a wood-based multifunctional composite displaying piezoelectric and moist-electric performance has been proposed. Wood porous material (WPM) was firstly prepared by delignification, oxidation and impregnation with MXene, in which zinc oxide (ZnO) was loaded via hydrothermal synthesis method. It can be found that the negative charge on the porous surface in MXene-impregnated WPM can attract Zn 2+ by electrostatic adsorption, creating a large number of nucleation sites for the growth of ZnO, thus accelerating its nucleation rate. Moreover, the increase of ZnO loading can enhance the fluidization current, so the obtained OWPM/MXene/ZnO moist-electrical generator (MEG) can generate an open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of 0.75 V at a test humidity of 85%RH, as well as can collect energy from hot steam with the V OC of about 0.4 V. Simultaneously, the heterojunction formed between ZnO and MXene further enhance the piezoelectric performance. Finally, a piezoelectric generator (PEG) with anisotropic piezoelectric sensing properties was prepared by the impregnation with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in OWPM/MXene/ZnO and the follow densification. It can generate a V OC up to 4.71 V when a force of 45 N was applied perpendicular to the fiber direction. The four PEGs series connection can light up a LED. Consequently, the application performance of MEGs and PEGs based on wood materials highlight potential in piezoelectric and hydroelectric harvesters.

Self-charging power systems (SCPSs) that combine energy harvest/store technologies have attracted extensive attention owing to their vast potential in the Internet of things (IoT). Still, the long charging time is a severe obstacle to the practical use of SCPSs. Herein, we have successfully prepared a high-efficiency SCPS composed of a performance-enhanced rotational hybrid nanogenerator (R-HNG) and high-energy-density asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). The R-HNG consists of a rotational triboelectric nanogenerator (R-TENG) and an electromagnetic generator (EMG), exhibiting superior charging performance. Among them, the output characteristics of the R-TENG can be enhanced by adjusting the work function difference between the friction layer and electrode. The working principle of the R-HNG is systematically explained by both Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) and finite element simulation. Meanwhile, the as-prepared ASC based on honeycomb-like NiCo-layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanosheets are used as an energy storing device within SCPS. The SCPS can reach 5.9 V after 120 s under a rotation speed of 200 rpm, which can power a homemade positioning device for outdoor search and rescue. This work provides a novel and effective solution for constructing high-performance SCPSs and is expected to accelerate the development of SCPSs in the IoT.

Natural lignocellulose has asymmetric crystal structures and abundant oxygen-containing groups, which endow cellulose materials with piezoelectric and moist-electric properties. In this work, micron-scale wood fiber was oxidated by using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPO), then the tracheid structure of fiber produced cracks accompanied by exposing more active groups of hydroxyl groups inside the tracheid. ZnO was also grown on the tracheid by one-step hydrothermal method to construct a coaxial structure to enhance the piezoelectric performance of fiber/ZnO piezoelectric generator (PEG). The assembled fiber/ZnO-PEG can produce an open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of 5.5 V and a power density of 21.57 μW cm −3 under a cyclic force of 50 N at 2 Hz. In addition, according to hydrophilic properties of the fiber/ZnO composite film, it was also assembled into a moist-electric generator (MEG) by constructing an asymmetric electrode. The fiber/ZnO-MEG can generate the V OC of 0.47 V at 85 % RH. After connecting five 11CZ-2ZnO-MEGs in series, the LCD (liquid crystal display) and LED (light emitting diode) can be successfully lit. Moreover, when the assembled fiber/ZnO MEG was pasted on the wrist, the output electrical signals increase significantly during wrist bending process, which can be attributed to the moist-electric effect and piezoelectricity. The proposed energy harvesting device has the advantages of low cost, biocompatibility and biodegradability, which displays great potential in the field of green energy, as well as provides reference for multi-angle design of sensing device.

In the field of solar thermal electricity, it is difficult to achieve efficient solar energy utilization during the day and continuous power supply day and night at the same time. To address this issue, an integrated system for daytime photothermal power generation combined with waste hot water evaporation and nighttime hygroscopic exothermic power generation has been designed. The system consists of multifunctional composite hydrogel, thermoelectric generator, and hydrophilic porous foam from top to bottom. Among them, the multifunctional composite hydrogel is a crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) loaded with photothermal material polypyrrole (PPy) and hygroscopic material CaCl 2 , and the hydrophilic porous foam is a PDMS treated by pore-making and oxygen plasma. During the night, CaCl 2 and SA in the hydrogel absorb ambient moisture and then release heat, causing the temperature difference between the two sides of the thermoelectric generator to generate electricity with a power of 15.1 mW m −2 . During the day, PPy in the hydrogel converts sunlight into heat for the thermoelectric generator to generate electricity with a power of 141.8 mW m −2 , and the waste heat of the thermoelectric generator is then used to evaporate the water in the porous PDMS with a rate of 1.311 kg m -2 h −1 , realizing the multi-stage utilization of solar energy with a high efficiency of 80 %. Therefore, this integrated system can not only use solar energy efficiently, but also generate electricity continuously day and night.

Harvesting water kinetic energy is a prospective way to obtain sustainable power. However, conventional water energy harvesting technologies are restricted by specific operating locations and fabrication materials. These techniques urgently need to be improved and supplemented with new methods. Here, we report a novel and universal single electrode droplet-based electricity generator (SE-DEG) that allows converting water droplet kinetic energy into electricity power on any surfaces of artificial or natural materials such as PTFE , glass, wood, aloe, cicada wing, stone and etc. This functionality is endowed by a special configuration characterized by the location of the electrode on the top of dielectric material rather than underlying as in the conventional triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Such special configuration can effectively harness the triboelectric charges generated without going through the electrostatic induction process between bottom electrode and the surface in the case of TENG. We envision that SE-DEGs represent a new dimension in ability to harvest abundant hydrodynamic energy everywhere.

Harvesting energy from ambient environment has been considered as a promising strategy for driving portable electronic devices in a sustainable way. A wind driven triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid nanogenerator has been fabricated to convert wind energy into electricity. It is composed of an electromagnetic generator (EMG) and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with the output power of 35 and 0.32 mW, respectively when the wind speed is 5 m/s. Generally, TENG shows a low current output with a high voltage output characteristic, on the contrary the EMG shows a high current output and a low voltage output. This hybrid nanogenerator overcomes these problems and exhibits comprehensive and efficient performance on scavenging energy. Moreover, in view of the output performance and charging ability of the hybrid nanogenerator, it shows high stability, making it suitable for charging capacitors or batteries and driving portable electronics sustainably. A new structure of integrated TENG and EMG was designed to harvest wind energy, which shows potential applications in portable and small device power supply system, especially in the areas of remote mountains, deserts, islands, etc., as emergency power supply.

Despite the boom in the water-triggered electric power generation technologies, few attempts have been made with a broader horizon yielding the electricity from sweat, which is of great value for low-power-consumption wearable electronics. Here, an electromechanical coupling and humidity-actuated two-in-one humidity actuator-driven piezoelectric generator (HAPG) are reported, that can yield continuous electric power from fluctuations in the ambient humidity. It is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-wrapped highly aligned dopamine (DA)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) shell/core nanofibers (PVA@DA/PVDF NFs). As-received PVA@DA/PVDF NFs can exchange water with the ambient humidity to perform expansion and contraction and convert them into electric power. An all-fiber-based portable HAPG is fabricated and tested on human palm skin. The devices show high sensitivity and accuracy for converting the mental sweating-derived continuous moisture fluctuations into electric power. This electric power can be stored in capacitors, which is expected to power micro- and nano-electronic devices or be used in electrotherapy such as electrical stimulation to promote wound healing. Beyond this, the obtained voltage profiles exhibit unique features that can reflect the typical sweat damping oscillation curve features.

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has the advantages of low cost, low weight, simple structure, and high efficiency. It is a promising low-frequency mechanical energy capture technology, which shows great potential in dealing with energy and environmental crisis and promoting new electronic products. TENGs have demonstrated irreplaceable design freedom over traditional electronic devices, including its ability to work independently of electrodes. In fact, the displacement current is an unreal current, it can work independently without electrodes. Moreover, due to the lack of “shielding effect” of the electrode, the surface potential can be larger than devices worked with electrodes. Here, based on TENG's high-voltage characteristic without electrode, the application of dust removal is explored, and a kind of electrodeless polyethylene triboelectric blackboard eraser was demonstrated as an example, which can effectively restrain the flying of chalk dust (limit the dust diffusion within 0.648 m). The electrostatic charge decayed blackboard eraser can be recharged by the electrodeless TENG without requirement of electrodes establishment. In fact, contact electrification may happen frequently in natural environment, and further design may be achieved without the limitation of electrodes.

Ubiquitous moisture is a colossal reservoir of clean energy, and the emergence of moisture-electric generators (MEGs) is expected to provide direct power support for off-grid electronic devices anytime and anywhere. However, most MEGs rely on auxiliary energy storage devices and rectifier circuits to drive small electronic devices, which hinder scalability and widespread deployment, and the development of direct current (DC) MEGs with high power output that can directly drive off-grid electronic devices is highly promising but challenging. Herein, a self-sustained moisture-electric generator (SMEG) with a hierarchical nanostructure based on one-dimensional (1D) negatively charged nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) conductive nanosheets was demonstrated to generate continuous DC electricity from atmospheric humidity. Sulfation of bacterial cellulose nanofibers lowers the surface potential and increases the surface charge energy, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) provides a conduction pathway for electrons. The hierarchical nanostructures constructed by the combination of 1D nanofibers and 2D nanosheets endow the SMEG with self-sustained moisture gradients and structural anisotropy, which force the generation of a pseudocurrent. This combination also constructs microcapacitors that further enhance the moisture-electric power output. The SMEG can generate a continuous voltage in excess of 0.54 V for over 2160 h, with a power density of about 822 μW cm–3, demonstrating excellent operational durability. This research provides a feasible solution for the development of sustainable, versatile, and efficient power supplies for off-grid self-powered devices.

Thermoelectric materials hold promises for direct conversion of heat into electricity, making them viable power sources for electronic devices. However, their practical applications in diverse outdoor environment are hindered by limited and discontinuous electricity output. In this study, we propose an all-day solar power generator to achieve highly efficient and continuous electricity generation by harnessing the synergistic effects of photoelectric-thermoelectric conversion and latent thermal energy storage. The all-day solar power generator exhibits an average open-circuit voltage of 6.8 mV during daylight and a remaining 0.9 mV during nighttime. Importantly, the all-day solar power generator achieves dependable outdoor power supply for communication transmission in diverse environmental scenarios. Our research opens a new way for highly efficient and sustainable power generation.

Triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid nanogenerator (HNG) with high output performance provides a very promising solution for realizing self-powered microelectronic devices. However, the complex structures and large mass of traditional HNGs make them difficult to prepare and carry. In this study, a rotating HNG based on flexible neodymium iron boron/ethyl cellulose (NdFeB/EC) composite films was designed for wind energy scavenging. A lightweight composite film with triboelectric and ferromagnetic properties, which can significantly reduce the weight of the rotor, was prepared to replace the magnet. Operated at a wind speed of 15.5 m/s, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) unit of the optimized HNG with an interdigitated electrode gap of 2 mm can generate an open-circuit voltage (V oc ) and a short-circuit current (I sc ) of 55 V and 5.4 μA, respectively. The maximum power of TENG is 99.2 μW under the condition of an external load resistance of 10 MΩ. The corresponding electromagnetic generator (EMG) unit can produce V oc and I sc of approximately 0.16 V and 59.3 μA, delivering an output power of 2.5 μW at a matched loading resistance of 2.3 kΩ. Compared to the individual TENG or EMG units, the HNG exhibited better charging performance. A 470 μF capacitor can charge to 3.4 V within 600 s, and the stored energy can successfully power a commercial soil temperature–humidity meter to work continuously for 75 s and light 30 blue LEDs in parallel. This research is of great scientific significance for developing triboelectric–ferromagnetic dual-functional materials and designing highly integrated and lightweight HNGs.

The droplet electricity generator (DEG) is a solid–liquid triboelectric nanogenerator with transistor-inspired bulk effect, which is regarded as an effective strategy for raindrop energy harvesting. However, further enhancement of DEG output voltage is necessary to enable its widespread applications. Here, high-entropy ceramics are integrated into the design of DEG intermediate layer for the first time, achieving a high output voltage of 525 V. High-entropy ceramics have colossal dielectric constant, which can help to reduce the triboelectric charge decay for DEG. Furthermore, the effect of factors on DEG output performance when employing high-entropy ceramics as the intermediate layer is extensively analyzed, and the underlying mechanisms and mathematical models are explored. Finally, the enhanced output voltage of DEG not only facilitates faster energy harvesting but also develops a novel method for rapid bacterial detection. This work successfully integrates high-entropy ceramics into DEG design, significantly enhances the output voltage, and offers a novel direction for DEG development.
