A bifunctional recoverable catalyst based on phosphotungstic acid for cellulose hydrolysis to fermentable sugars

Haonan Qu,Bingyi Liu,Li Li,Yanmei Zhou

Chemocatalytic production of platform compounds from cellulose is remarkable for both clean energy development and environmental pollution control . A battery of bifunctional recyclable amino acid functionalized phosphotungstic acid nanosilver (AAPTA-Ag) catalysts were synthesized for hydrolyzes cellulose in ionic liquid ([BMIM]Cl). The “catalytic domain” and “binding domain” derived from the Brønsted acidity and functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl) in the catalyst can synergistically promote the hydrolysis of cellulose effectively. What's more, the tyrosine-derived TyrPTA-Ag with abundant functional groups achieved a significant total reducing sugar (TRS) yield and cellulose conversion of 71.9% and 100% respectively at 140 °C for 1.5 h. Meanwhile, the catalyst cycled to the fifth time still showed good catalytic performance. In light of this research, it is possible to convert cellulosic biomass to TRS in a milder case, giving a relatively higher product yield in [BMIM]Cl solution.

One-pot synthesis of a chemically functional magnetic carbonaceous acid catalyst for fermentable sugars production from sugarcane bagasse

Tongchao Su,Jie Zeng,Haiyan Gao,Liqun Jiang,Xiuzhi Bai,Haixu Zhou,Feixiang Xu

Magnetic carbonaceous acid catalyst was synthesized from nano-Fe 3 O 4 powder, glucose and hydroxyethyl-sulfonic acid by a novel method of one-pot hydrothermal precipitation-sulfonation. It was found that the prepared C-SO 3 H@Fe 3 O 4 /C catalyst had high acidity (1.23 mmol g −1 ) and strong magnetism (12.85 Am 2 /kg). High yields of glucose (62.59%) and total reducing sugar (73.01%) were achieved from NaOH-freeze pretreated sugarcane bagasse by the C-SO 3 H@Fe 3 O 4 /C catalyst at 180 °C in a microwave reactor. In addition, the C-SO 3 H@Fe 3 O 4 /C catalyst could be easily separated and recovered by an external magnetic force at a high recovery rate (93.18%). High yields of glucose (54.47%) and total reducing sugar (60.65%) were also obtained after experiencing five-time cycles. It was demonstrated as an effective hydrolysis of pretreated sugarcane bagasse to fermentable sugars with high yields by the assistance of the C-SO 3 H@Fe 3 O 4 /C catalyst, and the catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic stability during the conversion process.

Enhanced enzymatic saccharification of sugarcane bagasse pretreated by sodium methoxide with glycerol

Xiaojing Lv,Jianghai Lin,Liang Luo,Dou Zhang,Senlin Lei,Wenjuan Xiao,Yuan Xu,Yingxue Gong,Zehuan Liu

Sodium methoxide ( CH 3 ONa) with glycerol pretreatment (CWGP) was performed to improve the enzymatic digestibility of sugarcane bagasse (SCB). Response surface methodology was utilized to optimize the CWGP parameters for pretreating SCB from the perspective of total fermentable sugar yield (TFSY) and total fermentable sugar concentration (TFSC). Under the optimal CWGP conditions, 0.5666   g/g of TFSY (0.82% CH 3 ONa, 1.11   h, 150   °C) and 17.75   g/L of TFSC (0.87% CH 3 ONa, 1.38   h, 149.27   °C) were achieved, corresponding to delignification of 79.05% and 79.34%, respectively. Compared the pretreatment using glycerol or CH 3 ONa alone, the CWGP has significant synergies to enhance the enzymatic efficiency of SCB. The physical and chemical characteristics of untreated and pretreated SCBs were analyzed using FT-IR, XRD, and SEM, and the results suggest that CWGP significantly increased the susceptibility of the substrates to enzymatic digestibility. Ultimately, CWGP might be a prospective candidate for the pretreatment process of enzyme-based lignocellulosic biorefineries.

Enhanced fermentable sugar production in lignocellulosic biorefinery by exploring a novel corn stover and configuring high-solid pretreatment conditions

Hossain M. Zabed,Suely Akter,Mudasir A. Dar,Jamila A. Tuly,Mukesh Kumar Aswathi,Junhua Yun,Jia Li,Xianghui Qi

This study aimed to produce enhanced fermentable sugars from a novel stover system through the bioprocessing of its soluble sugars and insoluble carbohydrates. The pretreatment conditions were optimized for this high sugar-containing stover (HSS) to control inhibitor formation and obtain enhanced fermentable sugar concentrations. The optimum temperature, acid loading, and reaction time for the pretreatment were 155 °C, 0.5%, and 30 min, respectively, providing up to 97.15% sugar yield and 76.51 g/L total sugars at 10% solid-load. Sugar concentration further increased to 126.9 g/L at 20% solid-load, generating 3.89 g/L acetate, 0.92 g/L 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, 0.82 g/L furfural, and 3.75 g/L total phenolics as inhibitors. To determine the effects of soluble sugars in HSS on fermentable sugar yield and inhibitor formation, sugar-removed HSS was further studied under the optimum conditions. Although prior removal of sugars exhibited a reduction in inhibitor generation, it also decreased total fermentable sugar production to 115.45 g/L.

Co-production of functional xylo-oligosaccharides and fermentable sugars from corn stover through fast and facile ball mill-assisted alkaline peroxide pretreatment

Fulong Zhang,Wu Lan,Zengyong Li,Aiping Zhang,Baoling Tang,Huihui Wang,Xiaoying Wang,Junli Ren,Chuanfu Liu

The aim of this work was to develop a feasible ball mill-assisted alkaline peroxide pretreatment followed by stepwise hydrolysis to improve the yield of xylo -oligosaccharides (XOS) and fermentable sugars. The hydrogen peroxide charge, ball-milling time, and solid-to-liquid ratio affected the compositions, particle sizes, morphology, and crystallinity of the corn stover, directly improving the following hydrolytic efficiency. The optimal pretreatment was with 0.45 g/g (H 2 O 2 : substrate) and 1:3 solid-to-liquid ratio (w/v) for 1.0 h ball-milling, resulting in 84.29% delignification. Physicochemical properties of the pretreated samples were characterized and their correlations to the enzymatic hydrolysis were revealed. Compared with one-step cellulase hydrolysis, the two-step xylanase-cellulase hydrolysis of the pretreated corn stover showed significant advance in preparing XOS, producing 69.65% (on the base of xylan content in pretreated sample) of XOS, along with 20.55% xylose, 68.94% glucose, and 21.15% gluco -oligosaccharides. The yield of XOS was 2–7 times higher than those in previous studies.

Short-time deep eutectic solvents pretreatment enhanced production of fermentable sugars and tailored lignin nanoparticles from abaca

Cheng-Ye Ma,Xiao-Peng Peng,Shaolong Sun,Jia-Long Wen,Tong-Qi Yuan

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment is a promising approach to decrease “biomass recalcitrance” and boost the cellulose bioconversion as well as lignin valorization. In this study, a short-time DES pretreatment strategy was performed to enhance the production of high-yield fermentable sugars and tailored lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) from abaca. The glucose yield reached 92.4% under the optimal pretreatment condition (110 °C, 30 min), which was dramatically increased in comparison with that (9.5%) of control abaca. Simultaneously, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) techniques indicated that the removed and regenerated DES lignin fractions displayed depolymerized structures and have relatively low molecular weight with relatively homogeneous morphology and narrow size distribution. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis indicated that these lignin fractions are LNPs and the size of the optimal LNPs fraction is ranged from 30 nm to 50 nm. Moreover, all the DES lignin exhibited excellent antioxidant activities as compared to the commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which can be used as a promising natural antioxidant in industry. In short, this study demonstrated that the short-time DES pretreatment will improve the enzymatic digestibility and facilitate the controllable production and valorization of LNPs from abaca biomass, which will further promote the economic and overall benefits of biorefinery.

Glycolic acid-based deep eutectic solvents boosting co-production of xylo-oligomers and fermentable sugars from corncob and the related kinetic mechanism

Deng Hai-Qing,Lin Xiao-Hui,Fan Jun-Tao,Fu Ping-Zhang,Guan Jia-Jun,Lei Han-Lin,Liu Li-Hao,Lai Lin-Hao,Hou Xue-Dan,Lou Wen-Yong

Background Xylo-oligomers are a kind of high value-added products in biomass fractionation. Although there are several chemical methods to obtain xylo-oligomers from biomass, the reports about the deep eutectic solvents (DESs)-mediated co-production of xylo-oligomers and fermentable sugars and the related kinetic mechanism are limited. Results In this work, glycolic acid-based DESs were used to obtain xylo-oligomers from corncob. The highest xylo-oligomers yield of 65.9% was achieved at 120 °C for 20 min, of which the functional xylo-oligosaccharides (XOSs, DP 2–5) accounted for up to 31.8%. Meanwhile, the enzymatic digestion of cellulose and xylan in residues reached 81.0% and 95.5%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of metal inorganic salts significantly accelerated the hydrolysis of xylan and even the degradation of xylo-oligomers in DES, thus resulting in higher selectivity of xylan removal. AlCl 3 showed the strongest synergistic effect with DES on accelerating the processes, while FeCl 2 is best one for xylo-oligomers accumulation, affording the highest xylo-oligomers yield of 66.1% for only 10 min. Furthermore, the kinetic study indicates that the ‘potential hydrolysis degree’ model could well describe the xylan hydrolysis processes and glycolic acid/lactic acid (3:1) is a promising solvent for xylo-oligomers production, in particular, it worked well with FeCl 2 for the excellent accumulation of xylo-oligomers. Conclusions Glycolic acid-based deep eutectic solvents can be successfully applied in corncob fractionation with excellent xylo-oligomers and fermentable sugars yields on mild conditions, and the large amount of xylo-oligosaccharides accumulation could be achieved by specific process controlling. The strategies established here can be useful for developing high-valued products from biomass.

Green and efficient fractionation of bamboo biomass via synergistic hydrothermal-alkaline deep eutectic solvents pretreatment: Valorization of carbohydrates

Shao-Chao Sun,Ying Xu,Cheng-Ye Ma,Chen Zhang,Cheng Zuo,Dan Sun,Jia-Long Wen,Tong-Qi Yuan

The development of green and efficient pretreatment strategies for renewable biomass valorization is required and remains challenging. In this study, a green, efficient, and profitable pretreatment strategy using hydrothermal combined with alkaline deep eutectic solvents (HT-ADESs) was developed for the fractionation and valorization of bamboo biomass. The results demonstrated that HT pretreatment not only selectively valorized hemicellulose into functional xylooligosaccharides (XOS), accounting for 65.9% of hydrolyzed xylan , but also facilitated the subsequent delignification with ADESs. Furthermore, 29% of hemicellulose was recovered from the prehydrolyzate, revealing a branched structure of O -acetyl-4- O -methyl-glucurono- β -(1 → 4)-ᴅ-xylan. Following delignification with choline chloride/monoethanolamine containing 25 wt% peroxide, up to 98.4% glucose yield and 99.2% xylose yield were realized by enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated residue, which were significantly higher than those of unpretreated bamboo (14.6% and 8.1%, respectively). The incorporation of an appropriate amount of water or peroxide into pure ADES facilitated lignin fractionation and reduced biorefinery costs. Overall, this work presented a promising pathway that could valorize 1 kg of dry bamboo into 490 g of fermentable sugars and 78 g of XOS, accompanied by 54 g of hemicellulose and 200 g of lignin fractions.

Sustainable production of fermentable sugars and antioxidant lignin from industrial xylose residue with facile deep eutectic solvents

Meichen Zhang,Syed Zaheer Ud Din,Jianzhen Mao,Zongwei Guo,Feng Xu

This study presents a readily synthesized deep eutectic solvent composed of guanidinium hydrochloride and lactic acid (GH/LA) for refining various industrial xylose residues (delignification and non-delignification), addressing industrial challenges caused by the accumulation of residues. Under mild conditions (120 °C for 2 h), lignin was efficiently extracted, leaving cellulose intact in the solid fraction. The isolated cellulose exhibited a theoretical sugar yield of 100 % within 48 h, which was attributed to the optimal lignin content (6.15 %) remaining in the cellulose residue. The recovered lignin demonstrated high purity (93.36–97.95 %), low molecular weight (2786–3089 g/mol), moderate polydispersity (2.29–2.37), remarkable thermal stability, and potent antioxidant activity (IC 50 =1.25 mg/mL). Comprehensive analysis confirms GH/LA DES pretreatment as a simple and effective method for efficient industrial waste utilization.

Dual functionality of ethylenediamine pretreatment: Release of fermentable sugars and modified fluorescent lignin

Haoxin Li,Jiakang Liang,Manni Ren,Li Chen,Olugbenga Abiola Fakayode,Cunshan Zhou

The refining of renewable lignocellulosic resources requires energy-intensive and chemically harsh processes, leading to lignin condensation and carbohydrate loss. To efficiently convert corn cobs (CCs) into fermentable sugars and produce functionalized lignin, we developed an ethylenediamine (EDA) treatment system under high solid loads. At 140 °C, EDA treatment separated 75.87 ± 3.16 % of lignin while retaining 93.72 ± 2.78 % of cellulose. The introduction of amino and amide groups enhanced lignin hydrophilicity through electrostatic repulsion and hydrogen bonding with water, reducing non-productive enzyme binding. As a result, glucose and xylose conversion rates in cellulose solids (CSs) reached 85.17 ± 1.82 % and 75.34 ± 1.95 %, respectively, while xylan solids (XSs) released 90.87 ± 3.47 % of xylose within 12 h of enzymatic hydrolysis. Aminated lignin (AL) contained 14.33 % nitrogen, exhibited aggregation-induced emission, and showed a 4.88-fold enhancement in photoluminescence (PL) intensity compared to alkali lignin. Model compound studies for the first time revealed the nucleophilic attack mechanism of EDA on ester bonds and β-O-4 ether linkages. The solid-state reaction system and α-amination structure effectively blocked reactive sites to prevent lignin condensation. AL can serve as a low-cost fluorescent probe for rapid Fe 3+ concentration detection. This one-step separation system achieves simultaneous extraction and modification, simplifying downstream processing of carbohydrates and lignin for value-added applications.

Dual Capable Solid Acid for Fabricating Refinement-Free Fermentable Sugars in Cellulose Hydrolysis

Yan Lei,Chengqi Feng,Jinhang Yang,Chenkai Jin,Yifei Huang,Juncheng Huang,Haining Na,Jin Zhu

The conversion of nonfood biomass to sugar resources is crucial for sustainable development and carbon neutrality in chemical manufacturing. A strategy with synergically enhanced adsorption and restricted acidic groups was proposed to construct dual capable solid acids (BP@HTC) for cellulose to sugar. A precise plan coupled with low acid and programmed temperature (0.01 M H2SO4; 200 °C, 1 h/130 °C, 1 h) to fit for the activation energies in different stages of cellulose hydrolysis with BP@HTC is preferred. An 86.95% cellulose conversion and 87.24% refinement-free fermentable sugars are obtained. An 80.82% cellulose conversion and 92.18% sugar selectivity can also be maintained after 30 cycles of hydrolysis. The concentrated hydrolysate directly substitutes commercial glucose for 5-aminolevulinic acid fermentation with Corynebacterium glutamicum. This study finally provides a methodology for depolymerization and fermentation cascading reactions of nonfood biomass, which is expected to be a potential solution for the sustainable development of nonfood biomass.
