Preparation and Application of High-Efficiency, Antibacterial, and Antiviral PET–PTHP Fibers

Xiangqiong He,Pengbao Shi,Taixia Wu,Bing Yu,Hailin Cong,Youqing Shen

Transmission through the respiratory tract is one of the most important ways for bacteria and viruses to infect the human body; the use of high-performance antibacterial and antiviral protective equipment is the most effective way to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases. However, at present, most personal protective equipment lacks the ability to kill pathogens. In this paper, a kind of polytetrahydropyrimidine–polyethylene terephthalate functional fiber (PET–PTHP fibers) with highly sustained antibacterial and antiviral properties was prepared. The inactivation rate of the fibers against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was as high as 99.99%, and the antibacterial time was more than 72 h. The fibers have an obvious destructive effect on lentiviruses and can reduce the infection rate of lentiviruses in BxPC-3 cells from 25.4 to 9.7%. The cytotoxicity test, cell live/dead staining test, and cell proliferation test all confirmed that PET–PTHP fibers have no obvious cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility. By applying the functional fibers to the inner layer of the masks, a new type of mask with adsorption, filtration, and killing properties against pathogens was prepared. The filtration efficiency of the new masks was 99.3%, and the pressure drop was 104 Pa. The new masks have excellent air permeability and filtration effect, meet the practical application conditions, and are of grade A; therefore, these masks provide medical protection as well as kill pathogens at the same time, further reducing the risk of human infection.

Polymersomes as virus-surrogate particles for evaluating the performance of air filter materials

Shuo Wang,Yuan Liu,Mengmeng Xu,Fei Hu,Qianqian Yu,Linge Wang

The development of antivirus air filter materials has attracted considerable interests due to the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Filtration efficiency (FE) of these materials against virus is critical in the assessment of their use in disease prevention. Due to the high cost and biosafety laboratory required for conducting research using actual virus samples, surrogates for virus are commonly used in the filtration test. Here, we explore the employment of polymersomes (polymeric vesicles) as a new type of surrogate. The polymersomes are hollow shell nanoparticles with amphiphilic bilayer membranes, which can be fabricated in nanosized, and possess similar size and structural features to virus. The performance of commercial KN95 mask and surgical mask with micro-sized fibers, and electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were chosen to be evaluated. The filtration tests against fluorescent-labeled virus-surrogate particles (VSPs), i.e. polymersomes, allowed the determination of the FE of the multilayered filter materials in a layer-specific manner. The results suggested the importance of hydrophobicity in designing the nanofibrous filter materials. The employment of VSPs in filtration performance evaluation allows a cost-effective way to estimate the FE against virus, providing guidance on future development of air filter materials.

ZnO-PLLA/PLLA Preparation and Application in Air Filtration by Electrospinning Technology

Xinxin Liu,Dengbang Jiang,Yuyue Qin,Zhihong Zhang,Mingwei Yuan

With the increasing environmental pollution caused by disposable masks, it is crucial to develop new degradable filtration materials for medical masks. ZnO-PLLA/PLLA (L-lactide) copolymers prepared from nano ZnO and L-lactide were used to prepare fiber films for air filtration by electrospinning technology. Structural characterization of ZnO-PLLA by H-NMR, XPS, and XRD demonstrated that ZnO was successfully grafted onto PLLA. An L9(43) standard orthogonal array was employed to evaluate the effects of the ZnO-PLLA concentration, ZnO-PLLA/PLLA content, DCM(dichloromethane) to DMF(N,N-dimethylformamide) ratio, and spinning time on the air filtration capacity of ZnO-PLLA/PLLA nanofiber films. It is noteworthy that the introduction of ZnO is important for the enhancement of the quality factor (QF). The optimal group obtained was sample No. 7, where the QF was 0.1403 Pa−1, the particle filtration efficiency (PFE) was 98.3%, the bacteria filtration efficiency (BFE) was 98.42%, and the airflow resistance (Δp) was 29.2 Pa. Therefore, the as-prepared ZnO-PLLA/PLLA film has potential for the development of degradable masks.

Three birds, one stone: Disinfecting and turning waste medical masks into valuable carbon dots for sodium hydrosulfite and Fe3+ detection enabled by a simple hydrothermal treatment

Sen Li,Jingyu Hu,Aaron Albert Aryee,Yuanqiang Sun,Zhaohui Li

Disposable medical masks are widely used to prevent respiratory infections due to their ability to block virus particles from entering the human body. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic highlighted the importance of medical masks, leading to their widespread use around the world. However, a large number of disposable medical masks have been discarded, some carrying viruses, which have posed a grave threat to the environment and people's health, as well as wasting resources. In this study, a simple hydrothermal method was used for the disinfection of waste medical masks under high-temperature conditions as well as for their transformation into high-value-added carbon dots (CDs, a new type of carbon nanomaterial) with blue-emissive fluorescence, without high energy consumption or environmental pollution. Moreover, the mask-derived CDs (m-CDs) could not only be used as fluorescent probes for sensing sodium hydrosulfite (Na 2 S 2 O 4 ), which is widely used in the food and textile industries but is seriously harmful to human health, but also be used for detecting Fe 3+ which is harmful to the environment and human health due to its wide use in industries.

Electrospun polyvinyl butyral/berberine membranes for antibacterial air filtration

Mei Qin,Daqing Liu,Xin Meng,Zhang Dai,Shufang Zhu,Na Wang,Xu Yan

At the beginning of 2020, the whole world suffered from the new coronavirus (COVID-19). Wearing a mask was believed to reduce the spread of the virus. The core material of a mask required good air permeability and efficient filtration. Electrospun materials may match these requirements. By electrospinning, we prepared polyvinyl butyral (PVB)/berberine hydrochloride (BH) membranes onto the spunbonded nonwovens. The composite meshes showed porous structures, good air permeability (164 ± 16 mm/s) and air filtration efficiency 96.4% for PM 0.3, 100% for PM 2.5, with pressure drop (108 Pa). Moreover, with the addition of BH, the as-spun membranes showed good antibacterial property for staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, the prepared PVB/berberine membranes had good hydrophobicity with water contact angle higher than 140°. These results indicated that the fabricated PVB/berberine membranes have potential applications in mask and air filtration.

Adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of bisphenol A on novel nitrogen-modified biochar derived from waste masks and biomass

Wang Tongtong,Husein Dalal Z.,Guo Siyan,Zhang Xinle,Kang Jiarui,Wang Huixia,Cao Shumiao,Shangguan Zhonghua,Shi Hui

Resource utilization of waste masks has become an urgent scientific issue. In this work, with sustainably, waste masks and biomass were co-pyrolysis with oxygen limitation to prepare mask-based biochar (MB). Then, urea was introduced to prepare novel nitrogen modified mask-based biochar (NMB) via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method. The adsorption characteristics of NMB on the emerging environmental pollutant, bisphenol A (BPA), were evaluated via batch adsorption tests. Moreover, the physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized with various advanced techniques. Also, the roles of waste masks and nitrogen modification were explored. The adsorption mechanisms of NMB on BPA were revealed as well as the performance differences between different adsorbents. The results showed that waste masks participated in thermochemical reactions, shaped the microsphere structure of biochar, and increased the types of surface functional groups. The nitrogen modification enriched the surface elemental composition and activated the specific surface area via the mesopore. These would enhance the adsorption performance. The maximum adsorption of BPA by NMB was 62.63 mg·g −1 , which was approximately 2.35–5.58 times higher than that of the control materials. Temkin model and pseudo-second-order model optimally simulate the isothermal and kinetic adsorption, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms are jointly by physical and chemical adsorption, which mainly includes π–π interaction, hydrogen bonding, intraparticle diffusion, surface adsorption, and ion exchange. After discussion and evaluation, NMB has lower preparation process cost (7.21 USD·kg −1 ) and safety, with potential for environmental applications. This study aims to expand new ideas for the comprehensive utilization of waste masks and the preparation of eco-friendly materials. Moreover, it provides a theoretical basis for the removal of BPA.

Lignin and copper nanocomposite coating for antibacterial mask

Mingjie Chen,Jiazhi Han,Dandan Zhang,Huiming Liu,Hui-juan Wang,Gang Zhou,Yanzhu Guo,Qing-Shan Shi,Xiaobao Xie

Lignin is a natural phenolic polymer characterized with renewable, sustainable and biocompatible, but yet remain underutilized. In the post-pandemic era, people are conventionally reusing mask but without any disinfections to prevent infection of virus in public places, which could lead to accumulation of bacteria and secondary infections. The development of antibacterial mask from lignin would simultaneously address the hygiene issues of used mask due to microbe accumulation and provide novel approach for lignin valorization. Herein, lignin/copper nanoparticle with excellent water dispersibility, antibacterial activity, and non-cytotoxicity was synthesized by in situ reduction of copper ions in lignin nanoparticles. The structure of lignin/copper nanoparticle, and antibacterial performance of the mask were thoroughly explored to understand the key factors to tune the process. Antibacterial mask was then prepared by simple dip coating of the lignin/copper nanocomposite onto the middle layer of a mask, which could effectively prevent the penetration of bacteria from the outer layer into the inner layer. The results of this study provide a feasible approach to prepare antibacterial mask using plant-derived, sustainable, and cheap raw material, namely lignin, which facilitate the high value valorization of lignin.

High-breathable, antimicrobial and water-repellent face mask for breath monitoring

Fangfei Zhang,Junzhu Lin,Mingwan Yang,Yun Wang,Zhicheng Ye,Jiajun He,Jie Shen,Xuechang Zhou,Zhiguang Guo,Yabin Zhang,Ben Wang

Face masks with multiple functionalities and exceptional durability have attracted increasing interests during the COVID-19 pandemic. How to integrate the antibacterial property, comfortability during long-time wearing, and breath monitoring capability together on a face mask is still challenging. Here we developed a kind of face mask that assembles the particles-free water-repellent fabric, antibacterial fabric, and hidden breath monitoring device together, resulting in the highly breathable, water-repellent, and antibacterial face mask with breath monitoring capability. Based on the rational design of the functional layers, the mask shows exceptional repellency to micro-fogs generated during breathing while maintaining high air permeability and inhibiting the passage of bacteria-containing aerogel. More importantly, the multi-functional mask can also monitor the breath condition in a wireless and real-time fashion, and collect the breath information for epidemiological analysis. The resultant mask paves the way to develop multi-functional breath-monitoring masks that can aid the prevention of the secondary transmission of bacteria and viruses while preventing potential discomfort and face skin allergy during long-period wearing.

Nickel-Ion Activating Discarded COVID-19 Medical Surgical Masks for Forming Carbon–Nickel Composite Nanowires and Using as a High-Performance Lithium Battery Anode

Guoqing Li,Mengyue Ma,Xuancheng Chen,Jiaqi Zhang,Ye Hong,Yu Huan,Tao Wei

With the prevalence of COVID-19, wearing medical surgical masks has become a requisite measure to protect against the invasion of the virus. Therefore, a huge amount of discarded medical surgical masks will be produced, which will become a potential hazard to pollute the environment and endanger the health of organisms without our awareness. Herein, a green and cost-effective way for the reasonable disposal of waste masks becomes necessary. In this work, we realized the transformation from waste medical surgical masks into high-quality carbon–nickel composite nanowires, which not only benefit the protection of the environment and ecosystem but also contribute to the realization of economic value. The obtained composite carbon-based materials demonstrate 70 S m–1 conductivity, 5.2 nm average pore diameters, 234 m2 g–1 surface areas, and proper graphitization degree. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the prepared carbon composite materials demonstrate a specific capacity of 420 mA h g–1 after 800 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g–1. It also displays good rate performance and decent cycling stability. Therefore, this study provides an approach to converting the discarded medical surgical masks into high-quality carbon nanowire anode materials to turn waste into treasure.

Preparation of superhydrophilic membranes from discarded masks for efficient oil-water separation and anti-crude oil adhesion

Bingfan Li,Xiaowen Qian,Jiang Han,Yong Han,Chao Yang,Tifeng Jiao

To overcome the limitations of inefficiency and high operational costs associated with conventional oil–water separation technologies, this study introduces a novel membrane material inspired by the natural adhesive properties of mussels, derived sustainably from discarded face masks. A straightforward, eco-friendly one-step modification method employing gallic acid (GA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was adopted to fabricate a superhydrophilic coating on polypropylene (PP) membranes. The modified membrane exhibited exceptional wettability, characterized by a water contact angle (WCA) of 0° and an underwater oil contact angle (UWOCA) of 162°, along with remarkable flux performance of up to 43,935.11 L·m −2 ·h −1 for oil–water mixtures and 1,328.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 for emulsions. Performance tests further demonstrated significant enhancements in hydrophilicity, separation efficiency, fouling resistance, and reusability under demanding operational conditions. Environmentally benign, mechanically stable, and simple to implement, this membrane technology represents a promising approach for both sustainable recycling of waste face masks and advancement in high-performance separation technologies.

Preparation of acid-modified waste mask-based activated carbon grafted chitosan composites and their efficient removal of uranyl ions

Xiaoxia He,Chao Zhou,Yifan Meng,Weiting Xiao,Pengfei Yang

Resource utilization of waste masks is of great significance for environmental protection. In this study, acid-modified waste mask-based activated carbon grafted chitosan composites (CSMA) were prepared using waste masks as a carbon source, chemically modified by introducing sulphonic acid groups through sulfuric acid treatment and further loaded with chitosan, and used for the efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. Various characterization techniques, including SEM, FTIR, BET, and XPS, were utilized to investigate the microstructure and surface chemistry of CSMA. The experimental data indicate that optimal adsorption efficiency for CSMA about U( V I) is achieved at a pH of 7, utilizing an adsorbent dosage( m / V ) of 0.1 g·L -1 , a reaction duration of 6 h, and a temperature of 303 K. Under these conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity reaches 467.93 mg/g. From the kinetic and thermodynamic results of adsorption, it can be seen that the process of CSMA adsorption on uranyl ions was more in line with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic analysis further confirms that this adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. In complex aqueous environments containing various co-existing ions, CSMA demonstrates good selective adsorption capabilities. After several testing cycles, CSMA still maintains a high adsorption efficiency for U(VI). Mechanistic studies using XPS/FTIR suggested that U(VI) capture was governed by coordination/chelation with surface functional groups (-NH 2 , -OH, -SO 3 H). This study not only presents an innovative approach for resource utilization from discarded masks but also offers an efficient and cost-effective solution for removing radioactive nuclides and facilitating environmental remediation.

Constructing magnetic metal doping carbon micro-particles with columnar structure via carbonization of waste masks for microwave absorption

Jiang-Tao Liu,Yu-Chen Zheng,Xin Hou,Xue-Rong Feng,Ke Jiang,Ming Wang

The recycling of waste masks (melt-blown polypropylene nonwoven fabrics) generated during the COVID-19 outbreak has now become a social issue of high priority. Converting these waste masks into electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers is one of the most cost-effective and high-value-added methods. In this study, we successfully converted household masks into magnetic metal doping carbon micro-particles with columnar structure to achieve excellent microwave absorption properties through sulfuric acid modification and doping magnetic metal. Specifically, the cobalt-doped carbon columnar micro-particles have a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −52.8 dB at 7.0 GHz (d = 3 mm) and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.6 GHz (d = 1.4 mm). The nickel/carbon hybrid materials have an RL min of −26.2 dB at 8.8 GHz (d = 3 mm) and an EAB of 5.3 GHz (d = 2.4 mm). The multiple reflection or scattering of EMWs, conduction and magnetic losses, dipolar polarization, and interfacial polarization effects can be enhanced in those magnetic metal doping carbon micro-particles with columnar structure, which leads to the excellent microwave absorption performance.
