Design and Synthesis of Biobased, Biodegradable Polyester for Chewing Gum

Jiao Li,Shuai Tang,Yonglai Lu,Zhao Wang,Liqun Zhang

Conventional chewing gum (CG) consisting of sweeteners and unbiodegradable chewing gum base (CGB) has caused severe pollution to the environment. To address this issue, this work designs and synthesizes a partially crosslinked biobased and biodegradable polyester elastomer to replace the high molecular weight rubber in traditional CG for elasticity, along with a biobased biodegradable polyester resin with a glass transition temperature ( T g ) of ≈38 °C to provide plasticity for CG. Subsequently, biobased biodegradable CG is prepared. Poly(1,3-propanediol/glycerol/sebacate/succinate) (PPGSeSu) elastomers with adjustable gel content and good elasticity are synthesized by adjusting the content of glycerol, and poly(2,3-butanediol/isosorbide/succinate) (PBIS) resins with a T g of 8–65 °C are prepared by tuning the molar ratio of isosorbide and 2,3-butanediol. As a result, fully biobased, biodegradable CG with similar performance to that of commercially available ones is achieved by using PPGSeSu-25%P (with 8.58% gel content) and PB 50 I 50 S ( T g = 38 °C). The biodegradation rate of the new CG is 75.52% after 97 d, and its chewing properties are comparable to those of commercially available CG according to the texture profile analysis results.

Saliva bubbles: How saliva foam impacts aroma release and retronasal perception during oral processing

Qianqian Guo,Christos Ritzoulis,Jianshe Chen,Jing Xu,Xinmiao Wang

Saliva foam can be easily formed upon different oral movement, but the impact of saliva foam on aroma release and perception is less investigated. Recruited subjects were asked to chew mint-flavor gums to mimic saliva foam generation. During gum-chewing, i.) subjects' retronasal release and dynamic perception of menthol and ii) their salivary bubble number and size, were continuously monitored. In the ‘normal series’ of experiments, bubbles were generated by the oral behavior of mastication; and in the ‘defoamed series’ of experiments, a defoaming agent was simultaneously added to eliminate the bubble effect during mastication. A continuous formation and collapse of saliva bubbles in the normal group led to a stable higher release of menthol in subjects' exhalation and significantly higher mint flavor perception ( p  < 0.05). In the defoamed series, saliva bubble numbers were reduced drastically (1–2 orders of magnitude) and more menthol was retained in saliva, which further affected subjects' intensity perception. Multiple physiological factors including salivary protein concentration, viscosity and surface tension contributed to the individual sensory perception variations, and no single parameter could explain the exact relationship between aroma release and retronasal perception. This study provided insights on the aroma delivery in food matrix design and development.

Fabrication of flexible and stretchable surfaces by modifying SiO2 on waste chewing gum for self-cleaning of fine-dust deposition

Jingfang Zhu,Longyang Li,Meng Dong,Zhixiang Zeng,Litao Sun

With increasingly refined and complex usage scenarios, the use of purely superhydrophobic surfaces/interfaces has become increasingly limited. Flexible and stretchable superhydrophobic surface with self-cleaning fine-dust deposition function is gaining popularity, but their low-cost fabrication faces multiple challenges. Herein, a flexible superhydrophobic surface was fabricated using chewing gum and SiO 2 , while being can be shapeable, stretchable, self-healable, and reusable. The apparent contact angle (APCA) increases along with the dosage of SiO 2 increase, the apparent contact angle (APCA) reaches to the maximum of 156 ± 5°, and the sliding angle (SA) reaches 3 ± 2° at the dosage of SiO 2 1.0 g, the adhesive force reaches to minimum of 0.034 mN. The study demonstrated that this composite material exhibits self-cleaning fine-dust deposition surface properties by simply pasting it onto different surfaces of metals, fabrics, paper, and plastics. The chewing gum/SiO 2 material shows robust resistance to sandpaper abrasion, tape-peeling, finger wiping, and solutions with different pH values. This material can be used on metals, fabrics, paper, and plastics for a myriad of self-cleaning fine-dust deposition applications.

MXene Empowers Recycled Chewed Gum for Bioelectronics and Wearable Sensors: Toward the Sustainable, High-Value Utilization of Waste

Xiaoqi Yin,Kangning Sun,Jing Cui,Hanyu Zhang,Xiankai Li

Growing resource scarcity and environmental urgency drive innovative strategies to transform waste into high-value materials for sustainable development. While chewing gum offers health benefits for oral hygiene and psychological well-being, its nondegradable polymeric composition creates environmental pollution when improperly discarded. Herein, chewed gum composites are fabricated by integrating MXene nanosheets into the gum through multiple stretching and kneading methods, realizing a superior electrical conductivity of 400 S m–1 and excellent adhesion to various substrates. The resultant chewed gum with self-healing properties can serve as flexible sensors capable of detecting human movement, which shows its promising potential for wearable smart sensors. In addition, combined with the photothermal effect of MXene nanosheets, the composites exhibit highly efficient solar-to-thermal conversion and can be constructed as a thermoelectric generator with an output voltage of 135 mV when exposed to 1 sun illumination. Thus, this study not only provides insights into the versatility of chewed gum as applied in flexible electronics, wearable sensors, and energy harvesting but also offers promising potential for high-value utilization to address the environmental issue of chewed gum waste.

Chewing gum containing repaglinide solid dispersion using mesoporous silica nanoparticles for management of diabetes mellitus: In-vitro evaluation and clinical appraisal

Noha M. Badawi,Reham I. Amer,Dalia A. Attia,Ahmed M. Fayez,Marwa H.S. Dawoud

The current study aimed to formulate repaglinide solid dispersion via mesoporous silica nanoparticles (R-MSNs) as a carrier in an attempt to enhance drug solubility. Then incorporation of it in a medicated chewing gum (MCG); to enhance the drug bioavailability, for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. R-MSNs solid dispersion formulations (R-MSNs-SD) were prepared using the solvent evaporation method. The chosen formula was investigated in terms of FTIR, DSC, and XRD in addition to morphology that was studied by SEM. The results demonstrated that repaglinide was successfully loaded into the pores of MSNs. The cytotoxicity of the chosen formula was evaluated by SRB assay using a Vero cell line and the cytotoxic effect of repaglinide was found to be diminished when incorporated within MSNs. Subsequently, MCGs were formulated using the chosen R-MSNs-SD as well as pure repaglinide and tested for physical properties, content uniformity, and drug release. The results exhibited a notable improvement in the release of repaglinide from the MCG containing pure repaglinide and R-MSNs-SD. A clinical investigation was further conducted on diabetic patients for MCGs containing R-MSNs-SD or pure repaglinide and compared to the marketed product where the blood glucose level was measured. MCG formulations specially the one loaded with R-MSNs-SD showed enhanced antidiabetic activity than the marketed product suggesting a promising oral antidiabetic delivery system for repaglinide.
