Multivalent cation batteries are attracting increasing attention in energy-storage applications, but reversible storage of highly polarizing multivalent cations is a major difficulty for the electrode materials. In the present study, charge-delocalizing Mo3S13 cluster-based materials (crystalline (NH4)2Mo3S13 and amorphous MoSx) are designed and investigated as cathodes for rechargeable magnesium batteries. Both of the cathodes show high magnesium storage capacities (296 and 302 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1) and superior rate performances (76 and 80 mAh g–1 at 15 A g–1). A high area loading of 3.0 mg cm–2 could be achieved. These performances are of the highest level compared with those of reported magnesium storage materials. Further mechanism study and theoretical computation demonstrate the magnesium storage active sites are the bridging disulfur groups of the Mo3S13 cluster. The valence state of bridging disulfur decreases/increases largely during magnesiation/demagnesiation along with breaking/formation of the sulfur–sulfur bond, which makes the Mg-association/dissociation highly reversible. The sulfur–sulfur bond breaking and formation provides high reversible capacities. Prominently, the valence state increase and sulfur–sulfur bond formation of the bridging disulfur during charge weakens the bonding with Mg2+, significantly assisting the magnesium dissociation. The present study not only develops high-performance magnesium storage cathode materials but also demonstrates the importance of constructing favorable magnesium storage active sites in the high-performance cathode materials design. The findings presented herein are of great significance for the development of electrode materials for the storage of multivalent cations.

The electrolytes containing halide-free inorganic magnesium salt Mg(BH4)2 dissolved in ether solvents have shown reversible Mg deposition-dissolution performance. Herein, we improved the anodic stability of the electrolytes on non-inert stainless-steel electrode by mixing PP14TFSI ionic liquid with tetraglyme (TG) and dimethoxyethane (DME) ether solvents. The effect of mixing ratios and salt concentrations on the electrochemical behavior of the electrolyte were investigated. High anodic stability, good ionic conductivity, excellent cycling efficiency, feasibility of the preparation and good compatibility toward Mo6S8 and TiO2 insertion cathode make the electrolytes promising for the potential application in rechargeable magnesium batteries.

The pursuit of novel cathode materials with excellent performance is the key to promoting the application of rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs). Herein, bimetallic copper-cobalt selenide (CuCo 2 Se 4 ) as a cathode material for RMBs, synthesized via a microwave-assisted method. In contrast to the monometallic selenide (Co 0.85 Se), CuCo 2 Se 4 exhibits a high reversible capacity of 108 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 after 80 cycles, and a superior rate capability (90 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 ). The crystal phase transition of the conversion electrode material during the cycles is analyzed using ex-situ XRD technology. The enhanced stability of bimetallic selenide provides a good experimental support for the preparation of high-performance rechargeable magnesium batteries based on bimetallic strategy.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have garnered significant attention in the field of energy storage. However, the use of a traditional electrolyte, Mg(TFSI) 2 /DME, leads to the passivation of the Mg metal anode (MMA), limiting the reversible deposition and dissolution process of Mg 2+ . Consequently, we propose a feasible method to modify the MMA, resulting in the formation of an artificial solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) coating rich in MgBr 2 , MgI 2 and Sb. This modification leads to substantial improvements in the interfacial kinetics and electrochemical properties of MMA, effectively suppressing the passivation reaction and significantly reducing the overpotential from 2 V to 0.3 V. Upon incorporating CuS/VS 4 cathode materials with a 0.15 M SbBr 3 modification, the discharge capacity reached 125 and 191 mAh·g −1 , respectively (compared to the initial capacity of 30 and 98 mAh·g −1 ) after 30 cycles. Similarly, with a 0.8 M SbI 3 modification, the battery exhibited capacities of 220 and 240 mAh·g −1 , respectively. Through a combination of experimental and computational analyses, we confirmed the uniform distribution of Sb, MgBr 2 and MgI 2 on the MMA surface and a substantial decrease in the diffusion barrier of Mg 2+ . This study presents a straightforward and efficient method for constructing an artificial SEI coating.

Vanadium tetrasulfide (VS4) is one of the most promising cathodic materials for rechargeable magnesium battery systems (RMBSs). Elemental substitution to expand layers, creation of sulfur vacancies, and reduction of particle sizes of VS4 are undoubtedly effective strategies to enhance cathodic performances. Experimental and DFT analysis revealed that valence states of vanadium and cobalt have been elevated from V2+ to V3+ and Co2+ to Co3+ in VS4 and that the Co–S bond length shortened due to cobalt substitution, which resulted in enhanced overall internal polarization in the layered atomic structure of VS4 by increasing cobalt concentrations. This phenomenon of charge accumulation contributes toward regulated magnesiation and accommodated volume expansion while cycling, resulting in the enormous structural stability of VS4 and sustainable battery performance during a long and stable cycling at a cost of 20% capacity diminution as compared to pristine VS4 in RMBS. Hence, 9% CoVS4 demonstrated a capacity of 158 mAh g–1 at a current density of 500 mA g–1 with approximately 98% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. Sustainable cathodic performance is the most desirous feature for commercialization. This work provides insight realization regarding structural limitations and opportunities of VS4 for sustainable cathodic performances in RMBS with non-nucleophilic 0.25 mol/L (R-PhOMgCI)2-A1Cl3/THF (PMC) electrolyte and has laid a theoretical plus experimental foundation for future developments.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have garnered significant attention in recent years. However, the commercialization of RMBs has been severely hampered by the low-strength and high-resistance connections between the magnesium (Mg) anodes and aluminum (Al) tabs. To address this challenge, we perform orthogonal experiments on 0.2 mm-thick Al–Mg ultrasonic welded joints to establish an optimized parameter range. Analysis of variance revealed that ultrasonic amplitude exerted the most dominant influence on joint strength (52.03%), followed by welding time (25.59%) and welding pressure (22.37%), with a significant interaction effect observed between welding time and amplitude. Notably, at a welding pressure of 0.40 MPa, the Al–Mg joint achieved peak performance, including the maximum lap-shear load (59.20 N) and minimal electrical resistance (0.483 mΩ). RMB pouch cells assembled with good-welded tabs demonstrated superior electrochemical performance compared to under and overwelded counterparts, exhibiting reduced internal resistance (3.55 Ω in the first cycle), enhanced capacity retention (77.45% after 60 cycles), and raised Coulombic efficiency (99.88% after 440 cycles).

Rechargeable Mg batteries (RMBs) are a promising large-scale energy-storage technology with low cost and high safety, but the performance is limited by the inferior kinetics of Mg-intercalation cathodes. In the present study, an octylamine-supporting interlayer expanded molybdenum diselenide (e-MoSe 2 ) is synthesized and used as cathode for RMBs, in comparison with ordinary crystalline MoSe 2 . The octylamine molecules introduced show a strong interaction with the MoSe 2 layers and increase the layer spacing significantly from 6.46 to 11.5 Å. e-MoSe 2 shows a high Mg-storage capacity of 238 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 and a superior rate performance of 39 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 , far advantageous over crystalline MoSe 2 . e-MoSe 2 also shows a considerably high structure stability during repeated magnesiation/demagnesiation, providing an outstanding cycling stability for 1000 cycles. Further electrochemical tests demonstrate the high Mg 2+ diffusion coefficients in e-MoSe 2 . Theoretical computation indicates the interlayer expansion changes the Mg 2+ diffusion paths from “hollow site → hollow site” to “hollow site → Se atom site → hollow site”, largely decreasing the energy barrier and improving the Mg 2+ diffusion kinetics. The present work highlights an efficient strategy for the improvement of Mg-storage performance for RMB cathodes.

Mg metal anodes experience significant passivation of harmful side reactions in conventional electrolyte consisting of magnesium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide (Mg(TFSI) 2 ) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), which critically impedes the advancement of high-performance rechargeable magnesium batteries. Herein, an innovative electrolyte system comprising an ultra-dilute 0.02 M Mg(TFSI) 2 in DME with 4-chlorobutyl methyl ether (CME) as co-solvent is strategically devised. This unique formulation effectively suppresses the formation of TFSI − -derived passivation byproducts while simultaneously facilitating the establishment of protective Cl-rich interphase, thereby achieving exceptional reversibility in Mg plating/stripping processes. Remarkably, Mg electrodes demonstrate stable cycling performance with a minimal overpotential of 70 mV at 0.1 mA cm −2 in the optimized 0.02 M Mg(TFSI) 2 -DME/CME electrolyte. More impressively, the system maintains reversible electrochemical operation for 400 h even at 2 mA cm −2 . This work presents a novel electrolyte formulation for overcoming the limitations of Mg metal anode in conventional Mg(TFSI) 2 based electrolytes, offering new perspectives for the development of next-generation rechargeable magnesium batteries.

Although rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) represent a promising post‑lithium energy storage technology, the formation of a non-conductive Mg 2+ passivation layer on Mg anodes remains a significant challenge. Here, we develop a novel all-inorganic electrolyte with low overpotential for Mg plating/stripping by introducing electrochemical active CuCl into a MgCl 2 /THF solution (MgCl 2 -CuCl/THF). During cycling, a multi-functional interface layer composed of Cu and Cu x Mg y Cl z is formed in situ on the Mg anode surface, which not only promotes MgCl 2 salt dissociation but also offer rapid-electron transport pathways. Moreover, the Cu + with reversible redox nature in Cu x Mg y Cl z can accommodate and release Mg 2+ ions, thereby facilitating rapid and homogenous Mg 2+ deposition. Consequently, the optimized MgCl 2 -CuCl/THF electrolyte enables Mg//Mg symmetric cells to cycle stably for over 1300 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 , with an overpotential as low as 0.15 V (vs. Mg 2+ /Mg). Furthermore, excellent Mg electro-plating/stripping properties have also been demonstrated in Mg//Mo, Mg//Cu, and Mg//SS asymmetric cells, achieving nearly 100 % Coulombic efficiency and stable cycling for over 138, 138, and 55 days, respectively. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of high-performance electrolyte systems for advanced RMBs.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are one of the most promising “post-lithium” battery technologies, but the electrochemical performance is still far from expectation due to the sluggish reaction kinetics of divalent Mg2+ ions. Herein, we report a low-cost, high-performance Mg–organic battery based on the combination of a fluorinated alkoxyaluminate electrolyte and a carbonyl polymer cathode material. First, the one-pot synthesized Mg[Al(HFIP)4]2 (HFIP = hexafluoro-2-propanol) is proved superior to the Mg[B(HFIP)4]2 analogue in both Mg anode compatibility and electrochemical window, as the electrolyte salt in the G2–DME (G2 = diethylene glycol dimethyl ether; DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) mixture solvent. Second, a simple wet grinding method is proposed to effectively improve the dispersion uniformity of the poly(benzoquinone-pyrrole) (PBQPy) active material in the cathode. Third, the elaborate Mg–PBQPy battery exhibits superior electrochemical performance within 0.4–3.0 V, including a high reversible capacity of 197 mA h g–1, a high average discharge voltage of 1.6 V, and a high capacity retention of 71% after 500 cycles. Finally, based on various electrochemical analysis and ex situ characterization results, we propose a general microscopic structure evolution model to reveal the electrochemical behaviors of carbonyl polymer cathode in RMBs, including the swelling of polymer active material, trapping of Mg2+ ions, and reversible redox reaction.

Rechargeable Mg batteries are advantageous substitutes for lithium-ion batteries in large-scale energy storage with low cost and high safety, but the lack of cathode materials is blocking the development. Organic polymers are promising Mg-storage materials, and the construction of suitable Mg-storage active sites is of great significance for the performance. In the present study, a double-chain conjugated carbonyl polymer is designed and investigated as cathode material of rechargeable Mg batteries. The double-chain structure builds favorable active sites for reversible storage of bivalent Mg 2+ cation by means of immobilization of the two adjacent carbonyls. This double-chain polymer shows a higher Mg-storage capacity (194 mAg –1 ) than the corresponding single-chain polymer (116 mAg –1 ). The Mg-storage capacity of this double-chain polymer also exceeds the Li-storage capacity (106 mAg –1 ) significantly. A mechanism study demonstrates the reversible carbonyl enolization in Mg-storage reactions. A theoretical computation demonstrates the magnesiation structure has a higher HOMO and a lower LUMO energy level, as well as a smaller HOMO–LUMO gap. This is favorable for the Mg-storage reaction reversibility and stability of the magnesiation structure, thus improving the capacities and cycling stabilities. The principle revealed in the present study provides an important insight to design organic conjugated polymers with favorable Mg-storage active sites, which would assist the development of high-performance Mg-storage materials.

Mg(SO 3 CF 3 ) 2 (Mg(OTf) 2 ) is a simple and cost-effective magnesium salt, which can promote the future applications of rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs). However, the simple Mg(OTf) 2 /ether electrolytes suffer from poor electrochemical properties due to the low solubility of Mg(OTf) 2 and the serious decomposition passivation of the [Mg 2+ -OTf − ] ion pair on Mg. Herein, the OTf − anion is successfully grafted on low-cost fluoride boronic esters (B(OC x H y F 2x-y+1 ) 3 ) to obtain the asymmetric and weak-coordination boron-center [B(OC x H y F 2x-y+1 ) 3 OTf] − anion in ether electrolytes. The -OCH 2 CF 3 (TFE) groups in B(TFE) 3 effectively realize the charge delocalization of the OTf − and B-O plane, restraining the independent decomposition of the [Mg 2+ -OTf − ] ion pair. The co-decomposition of the asymmetric [B(TFE) 3 OTf] − induces the formation of the B-containing organic/inorganic interphase, thus achieving a reversible Mg plating/stripping. After the further solubilization reaction, the obtained electrolyte exhibits a high average coulombic efficiency of 98.13% and long-term cycling stability (1000 h). Notably, the long cycling life (capacity retention of 90.2% after 600 cycles at 1 C) and high-rate capacity (43.0 mAh g −1 at 5 C) of the Mg/Mo 6 S 8 full cell demonstrate a favorable electrolyte/cathode compatibility. This work brings new insights to design the new-type and low-cost Mg-salts and high-performance electrolytes for commercial RMBs.
