On-demand adhere to and detach from soft and wet surfaces are crucial for hydrogels for applications in tissue engineering , soft machines, and soft robotics. Whereas strong adhesion has been achieved between hydrogels, on-demand switching from strong adhesion to weak adhesion for benign detachment is still under explorations. Herein, we report an approach for switchable adhesion between hydrogels by invoking a mechanical process, wrinkling. The approach is demonstrated by bonding two hydrogel adherends with a wrinkled hydrogel adhesive , with the formation and characterizations of wrinkles tailored by regulating the prestretch of adherend and optimizing the ingredients of adhesive synergistically. On one hand, the formation of wrinkles enhances adhesion by creating a tortuous path for crack propagation and an extended energy dissipation zone. The resulting adhesion is robust to elicit bulk dissipation within the adherend and transform the once adhesive failure to cohesive failure . On the other hand, the suppression of wrinkles deactivates the adhesion enhancement mechanism to facilitate effortless debonding. As a proof-of-concept, a hydrogel patch that can strongly adhere to a damaged hydrogel device for repair and gently detach after repairing, based on the switchable hydrogel adhesion, is demonstrated. The proposed method expands the design space for hydrogel adhesion.

Droplet manipulation plays an important role in many fields, and smart adhesion control on superhydrophobic surfaces is widely accepted as an effective strategy. However, some imperfections such as long response time and deformable elastic materials are still difficult to be avoided for existing methods. Herein, a new strategy is reported to reversibly control the surface adhesion and droplet's sliding without the change of surface chemistry and microstructure. A novel superhydrophobic surface is prepared by integrating a substrate with a certain size of NdFeB magnetic region and a hydrophobic SiO 2 coating. The magnetic region on the surface is highly adhesive, which can pin a superparamagnetic droplet tightly. As an external magnet (EM) with opposite direction of magnetic flow to the NdFeB magnetic region is put above the droplet, the droplet rolls off as the surface is tilted, indicating that the high adhesive region has turned into the low adhesive state and in situ droplet's sliding control is realized. After removing the EM, the magnetic region on the surface can regain the high adhesion, demonstrating an excellent controllability. Finally, based on the smart controllability, the surface with several magnetic regions is designed and on-demand storage/release control of different droplets is demonstrated.

Recently, inspired by gecko’s smart adhesion, many intelligent adhesive surfaces have been reported. However, all of these are focused on single adhesion to liquid or solid, to obtain a surface with switchable adhesion to both water and solid is still a challenge. Herein, by coating a layer of polyurethane (PU) with micropillar structures onto a shape memory polymer (SMP) substrate to imitate the skin and muscle of the gecko’s foot, respectively, we report a new shape memory film that can repeatedly display curved/unfolded shapes with the help of the excellent shape memory property. Research results indicate that besides the variation of the contact area, a proper surface energy is also crucial for the special adhesion. Furthermore, based on the smart adhesive performance, in-situ capture/release of both solid and liquid were demonstrated by using the film. This research proposes a film with tunable adhesion to both solid and liquid, which provides a fresh idea for designing novel adhesive film, and meanwhile broadens the application of the adhesive materials.

The rapid development of wearable devices and soft robotics has an urgent demand for polymer conductors with a switchable adhesion property. Herein, we report a supramolecular ionogel (SIG) that can reversibly switch between adhesion and debonding to various substrates. The on/off switchable adhesion of SIG is attributed to phase separation induced by the aggregation of polymer chains and the formation of a lubricating layer, which impairs the contact between polymer chains and substrates, thus weakening interfacial interaction. The phase separation ionogel (PSIG) is highly sensitive to humidity, leading to the debonded PSIG instantly transforming into the adhesion-hydrated ionogel (HIG) owing to the disruption of phase structure. Based on the switchable adhesion property, this multiresponsive ionogel shows potential applications as a fire alarm and intelligent conductive tape. This work provides a simple method for developing a switchable adhesion ionic polymer conductor and broadens the application of the ionogel in flexible devices.

Smart superhydrophobic surfaces with reversible wettability are attracting increasing attention. However, most of the reported smart superhydrophobic surfaces switch their wettability through reversibly changing surface chemistry rather than surface microstructure. In this paper, femtosecond laser direct writing was exploited to create microgroove array structure on the shape-memory polymer (SMP) substrates. The groove-structured surface exhibited superhydrophobicity and anisotropic wettability after fluoroalkylsilane modification. Due to the excellent shape-memory property of the SMP substrate, the morphology of the microgroove array could be transformed between original stand shape and deformed shape in response to heat. Correspondingly, water droplet on the surface was reversibly changed between sliding and sticky states through alternant pressing and heating treatments, indicating switchable adhesion of the laser-induced microgroove array. Meanwhile, the anisotropic wettability could also recover with the restoration of the grooved microstructure. Such wettability conversion on the resultant surface could be cycled 10 times without decline of the superhydrophobicity and anisotropic wettability. The anisotropic superhydrophobic SMP surface with both ultralow and ultrahigh water adhesion was successfully applied in rewritable liquid pattern, droplet-based microreactor, and gas sensing. By taking advantage of femtosecond laser, reversible microstructures and surface wettability can be obtained on various SMP substrates. We believe that such surfaces with thermal-responsive superhydrophobicity, anisotropic wettability, and switchable adhesion will have enormous potential applications in non-loss droplet transfer, biological detection, and lab-on-chip devices.

Superhydrophobic surfaces with smart adhesion has aroused increased interest. However, all reported surfaces can only display switchable adhesion in air. Herein, we report a fluoroalkylsilane-modified TiO 2 nanotube surface that has switchable adhesion in both air and oil as it is alternately Ultraviolet-irradiated and heated. The transition is not synchronous; a longer Ultraviolet-irradiation time is needed to obtain high adhesion in oil than in air, and the transition is more difficult in polar oil than in non-polar oil. The reversible transition attributes to the combined effect between the nanostructure and surface chemical variation, the out-of-step transition is attributed to different roles of the exposed naked TiO 2 , which offers water-adhesive force in air and oil-adhesive/water-repellent force in oil. This works reveals the effect of environmental media on surface-wetting/adhesion transition, which is helpful for design of novel adhesive surfaces to meet practical requirements.

Surfaces with switchable adhesion have been vigorously investigated over the past decades by mimicking the unique adhesive mechanisms of living systems. However, designing a universal intelligent adhesive surface for both solid and liquid remains a challenge. Herein, drawing inspiration from the controllable capillary forces generated by muscle movements and oil-secretion on the foot pads of the beetle ( Hemisphaerota cyanea ), we report a novel oil-loaded shape memory polymer (SMP) micropillars with such smart controllability. Based on the shape memory effect (SME) of the SMP, the pillars can be reversibly switched between the tilted state and the upright state, which simultaneously changes the distribution of the trapped oil, and thus generates different capillary forces. This variation results in reversible adhesion behaviors of the surface to diverse solids including flat glass, CD disk, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), rough glass, sandpaper, nylon net, and liquid droplets like acid, basic, salt-containing water droplets, and some organic liquids such as glycol, glycerol, and formamide. Given its smart adhesion, the surface was further applied in in-situ gripping/release of solid objects and directed liquid shedding. This work provides a new design strategy for smart adhesive materials, which may contribute to the development of smart grippers, microfluidics, etc.

The design of hydrogels with switchable adhesion and stable antiswelling property in a wet environment has remained a challenge. Here, we report a biomimetic hydrogel that can adhere and detach on-demand on various material surfaces, which is realized by thermal-triggered switchable shape transformation on hexagonal micropillar patterned hydrogels. The hydrogels are cross-linked by two cross-linkers of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate and 2-ureidoethyl methacrylate, which guarantee the strong mechanical property and stable antiswelling property in a wet environment. The hydrogels can maintain stable water content in solutions with variable pH, temperature, and salt concentration, and the change in volume does not exceed 2%. In addition, due to the dynamical hydrogen bonds and dipole–dipole interaction in the hydrogels, the hydrogels exhibit a thermal-triggered shape-memory effect. The hydrogel can recover shape more than 80% in 15 s. Furthermore, inspired by the surface structure of tree-frog footpads, the hexagonal micropillar patterned hydrogels exhibit improved underwater adhesion strength. The underwater adhesion strength of hexagonal micropillar patterned hydrogels is seven times more than that of flat hydrogels. Based on the shape-memory effect of hydrogels, the adhesion strength can be altered by a thermal stimulus. The adhesion strength of the microstructures recovered from the hydrogel surface decreased to 15.4% of the initial adhesion strength. The switchable underwater adhesion of hydrogels can be applied in the fields of transfer printing, medical adhesives, mobile robots, etc.

In this article, a lightweight, untethered wearable adhesive glove (total weight 72 g) is developed to empower the human hand with adhesive gripping. A textile glove comprises ionogels with embedded flexible heaters and a wireless electronic control module. The thermoresponsive ionogel with switchable adhesion achieves a switching ratio of 4.9 after heating 4.4 s under 4 V voltage, enabling on-demand object pickup and release. As demonstration examples, the wearable adhesive glove is shown to grasp multiple objects with single-finger adhesion and manipulate card with two-finger adhesion. It is shown in the experiments that the wearable adhesive glove can expand the gripping modes and enhance the gripping ability of the human hand by giving it a new degree of freedom of adhesion.
