Development of ambient printable hydrogen-bonded crosslinked vitrimer hydrogel inks derived from low methyl apple pectin with reduced K+ concentration

Tianya Hu,Duan Yuan,Xiao Fu,Shuai Zhang,Fanfan Cui,Fengchen Li,Huixia Zhou,Xiaoyu Wang,Yong Hong Meng,Yurong Guo

The K + -induced pectin-based vitrimer hydrogel ink, with dynamic exchange properties, offers an innovative solution for single-channel extrusion-based 3D food printing. However, forming hydrogen-bonded cross-linked vitrimer traditionally requires over 150 mM of K + to overcome the electrostatic repulsion between enzyme-modified pectin (EMP) molecules, which raises health concerns due to the high K + content. This study developed a novel strategy to introduce Ca 2+ bridges to partially weaken the electrostatic repulsion, fabricating low-K + vitrimer gel inks. Using 67 mM K + and 0.9 mM Ca 2+ , a densely cross-linked gel (Ca-EMP-K 67 mM) was formed at 25 °C, exhibiting excellent mechanical performance (~140 g hardness). Meanwhile, the gel possessed excellent self-healing properties, with a relaxation time of 8.3 s at 80 °C, confirming its vitrimer status. Notably, the Ca-EMP-K 67 mM gel ink achieved a ~ 55 % reduction in K + doses while enabling an increase in shaping temperature from 4 °C to 25 °C, compared to the traditional EMP-K 150 mM gel ink. These advancements enabled a low-K + pectin ink for ambient 3D printing. The introduction of Ca 2+ not only reduces the K + concentration requirement but also increases the shaping temperature, broadening the gel ink's applications in the food industry.

Skin-printable, anti-freezing, and recyclable ionic hydrogel bioelectrode for continuous electrophysiological monitoring

Meiqiong Zheng,Leqi Li,Xinyuan Ye,Zichong Ji,Yuli Wang,Zonglei Wang,Shihong Lin,Mingzhe Wang,Wenqing Yan,Jiawei Yang,Pengcheng Zhou,Yujie Zhang,Runzi Niu,Hossam Haick,Yan Wang

The rapid advancement of wearable electrophysiological monitoring has driven a growing demand for soft, conductive materials, particularly hydrogels, due to their exceptional mechanical properties, high conductivity, and biocompatibility. However, hydrogel materials are prone to freezing at subzero temperatures, which leads to material failure. Additionally, prefabricated hydrogel electrodes often lack sufficient conformability and long-term stability, thereby limiting their practical applications. We report a skin-printable hydrogel-based epidermal bioelectrode designed for continuous, high-precision wireless electrophysiological monitoring. The hydrogel, synthesized via an effective one-pot process, comprises gelatin, glycerol, ammonium chloride, and water. Its reversible thermal phase transition enables precise printing onto glabrous and hairy human skin. The in-situ formed hydrogel electrode exhibits excellent adhesion at both the hydrogel/skin and hydrogel/electrode interfaces, with adhesion force reaching 0.9 N/cm and 2.6 N/cm, respectively. The incorporation of glycerol and ammonium chloride imparts remarkable anti-freezing properties, allowing the hydrogel to maintain outstanding mechanical flexibility across a broad temperature range, from ultra-low temperatures of −80 °C to the phase transition temperature of 43.9 °C. Remarkably, the hydrogel retains its optical transparency even when immersed in liquid nitrogen. Additionally, the hydrogel demonstrates superior self-healing, high water retention, and recyclable properties. We successfully validated the hydrogel’s potential for personalized healthcare through high-fidelity electrocardiogram recordings over 80 min during various daily activities, demonstrating its practical applicability. This work highlights the versatility and functionality of skin-printable hydrogel as a promising material for next-generation epidermal electronics.

Rheology and printability of the ZrO2@C microsphere paste for the fabrication of ZrC ceramics by direct ink writing

Haibo Ouyang,Wenlu Li,Cuiyan Li,Tianzhan Shen,Leer Bao,Sirui Wu

ZrO 2 @C spherical powder was synthesized via a solvothermal method and utilized in the fabrication of ZrC ceramics through direct ink writing (DIW) to enhance rheological properties and reduce sintering temperature. The effects of solid content on the rheological behavior and printability of the ZrO 2 @C paste were systematically investigated. The ZrO 2 @C paste exhibited typical pseudoplastic fluid characteristics and viscoelastic properties, demonstrating excellent shape retention and shear-thinning behavior. Optimal solid content and printing speed were determined to be 54 wt% and 100 mm/s, respectively, leading to superior printability. Using these optimized parameters, green bodies with planar and lattice structures were rapidly and precisely fabricated. After reactive sintering at 1600 °C, the resulting ZrC ceramic achieved a promising bending strength of 30.9 MPa. This study provides a robust strategy for the rapid fabrication of ultrahigh-temperature ceramics with complex geometries.

PVA fiber reinforced red mud-based geopolymer for 3D printing: Printability, mechanical properties and microanalysis

Kang Han,Fei Gu,Huashan Yang,Xinchen Tian,Xiangqin Du

Red mud-based geopolymers are an efficient alternative to resolve the high cement consumption in 3D printed concrete (3DPC). From a materials perspective, good printability and mechanical properties are critical to adopting red mud-based geopolymers in 3DPC. In this study, we selected bauxite tailings-red mud and blast furnace slag to prepare geopolymers. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers with 0, 0.3 %, 0.6 %, 0.9 %, and 1.2 % volume fractions were used to reinforce 3D printed red mud-based geopolymers. To evaluate the influence of PVA fiber on the printability and mechanical properties of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer. We tested the workability, extrudability, structural build-up ability, shape stability, and mechanical properties of the red mud-based geopolymer containing different volume fraction PVA fibers, and a microstructural analysis was performed to reveal the interface bond between the fibers and the geopolymer matrix. The results showed that adding PVA fibers impaired the workability of the red mud-based geopolymer mortar. The red mud-based geopolymer mortar showed a more than threefold increase in extrusion pressure compared to the control mixture (P0) when adding 1.2 % vol fiber. For all other mixtures, the increase was less than twice that of the control mixture. The PVA fiber had a significant positive impact on the structural build-up ability and shape stability of the 3D printable red mud-based geopolymer. In addition, PVA fibers promoted the bending strength of the hardened geopolymer specimens better than the compression strength, and the geopolymer gel on the fibers indicated the good interfacial bonding ability of the PVA fiber. This study demonstrates the feasibility of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer and the reinforcement of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer by PVA fibers, providing a material perspective to increase the range of red mud applications in 3D printed concrete.

Malleable, printable, bondable, and highly conductive MXene/liquid metal plasticine with improved wettability

Jiang Haojie,Yuan Bin,Guo Hongtao,Pan Fei,Meng Fanmao,Wu Yongpeng,Wang Xiao,Ruan Lingyang,Zheng Shuhuai,Yang Yang,Xiu Zheng,Li Lixin,Wu Changsheng,Gong Yongqing,Yang Menghao,Lu Wei

Integration of functional fillers into liquid metals (LM) induces rheology modification, enabling the free-form shaping of LM at the micrometer scale. However, integrating non-chemically modified low-dimensional materials with LM to form stable and uniform dispersions remain a great challenge. Herein, we propose a solvent-assisted dispersion (SAD) method that utilizes the fragmentation and reintegration of LM in volatile solvents to engulf and disperse fillers. This method successfully integrates MXene uniformly into LM, achieving better internal connectivity than the conventional dry powder mixing (DPM) method. Consequently, the MXene/LM (MLM) coating exhibits high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance (105 dB at 20 μm, which is 1.6 times that of coatings prepared by DPM). Moreover, the rheological characteristic of MLM render it malleable and facilitates direct printing and adaptation to diverse structures. This study offers a convenient method for assembling LM with low-dimensional materials, paving the way for the development of multifunctional soft devices.

Transient, printable and recyclable gelatin hydrogels with enhanced mechanical sensing and electromagnetic shielding performance by incorporation of reduced graphene oxide

Rui Yin,Chen Zhang,Youyou Chen,Yu Wang,Qiang Feng,Yaming Liu,Minghan Yu,Yunhuan Yuan,Cheng-Yan Xu,Feihua Liu,Weiwei Zhao

Transient and recyclable elastic materials have gained tremendous attention in the development of next-generation electronics. However, the fabrication of robust and printable electronic materials at mild conditions with biopolymer-based materials remains challenging. As a common and benign natural polymer, gelatin has easy availability, water solubility, good flexibility, and full biodegradability, yet its electromechanical performance is poor. Herein, a transient and recyclable gelatin hydrogel with remarkable mechanical resilience, conductivity and printability is constructed by a mild two-step reduction of the incorporated graphene oxide (GO) in ascorbic acid and sodium citrate solutions. The integration of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in the gelatin hydrogel not only provides abundant multiple non-covalent interactions to dissipate the mechanical energy but also endows the hydrogel with desirable electrical conductivity, with the fracture stress and conductivity improved by 53 and 33 times, respectively. Under the synergistic merits, the hydrogel can be assembled as a compliant electromagnetic shielding layer with a shielding effectiveness of 29.4 dB, as well as resistive and capacitive sensors with high sensitivity (0.84 kPa −1 ), large gauge factor (8.2) and excellent stability (>20000 cycles under 60 kPa). As a proof-of-concept, the hydrogel was directly injected onto skin and assembled into a fully degradable self-powered sensing system for Morse code demonstration, and the hydrogel is permeable, photothermally healable, and washable. This work is a step towards the low-cost, ambient and scalable fabrication of green, reliable and versatile flexible electronics.

Photochemically driven one-step triple dynamic network formation in printable tough hydrogel for self-healing tubular sensors

Liwei Sun,Zhe Lu,Ping Zhang,Hongqiu Wei,You Yu

Self-healing hydrogels have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and reparability. However, it is still a challenge to construct in one step printable self-healing tough hydrogels (PSHTHs), which limits their advanced application. Here, we report a photochemically driven dynamic multinetwork formation (PDDMF) strategy for the one-step design of high-performance multinetwork PSHTHs. Orthogonal ruthenium photochemistry helps in the simultaneous formation of multiple covalent and dynamic networks in ∼10 s. Triple dynamic networks of PSHTHs improve their mechanical performance and enable them to have excellent self-healing ability. These reversible hydrogen-bonded and ionically crosslinked networks could be healed in around 3 s after being destroyed at large shear strains (1000%). Also, PSHTHs exhibit 90% self-healing efficiency after multiple instances of mechanical damage and have mechanical performances similar to those of fresh samples. More importantly, this PDDMF strategy is controlled by simply adjusting the irradiation procedures and is compatible with standard extrusion printing technology to make complex 3D structures. As a proof-of-concept, highly sensitive tubular sensors are designed to detect environmental pressures anisotropically. It is anticipated that this PDDMF strategy and the as-prepared PSHTHs have potential applications in fabricating high-performance self-healing wearable devices, sensors, and bioelectronics.

Printable CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dot ink for coffee ring-free fluorescent microarrays using inkjet printing

Aijing Gao,Jia Yan,Zhaojin Wang,Pai Liu,Dan Wu,Xiaobing Tang,Fan Fang,Shihao Ding,Xiang Li,Jiayun Sun,Meijuan Cao,Liduo Wang,Luhai Li,Kai Wang,Xiao Wei Sun

Printable perovskite quantum dot (QD) ink is very important for achieving high quality coffee ring-free fluorescent microarrays for different kinds of emerging perovskite optoelectronic applications using inkjet printing. In this work, we prepared a printable CsPbBr3 perovskite QD ink by mixing high-boiling point dodecane with low-boiling point toluene as a solvent. The evaporation rate, viscosity and surface tension of the ink were carefully optimized by tuning the volume ratio of these two solvents for forming appropriate Marangoni flow, so as to balance the capillary flow and eliminate the coffee ring effect further. Successfully, CsPbBr3 perovskite microarrays with uniform surface, low roughness and no coffee rings were achieved by inkjet printing the optimized perovskite QD ink on a PVK (poly-(9-vinylcarbazole)) layer. Furthermore, we patterned the CsPbBr3 perovskite QD ink, and the printed patterns were only visible under ultraviolet (UV) light, which can be applied in invisible anti-counterfeiting labels and encryption in the future.

Printable, flexible ceramic fiber paper based on electrospinning

Xie Yong-Shuai,Cheng Yuan,Lyu Yang,Li Rui,Han Jie-Cai

Based on the fact that it is challenging for the polymer flexible circuit substrates to meet the requirements of serving in high-temperature environments, this work proposed the idea of using printable ceramic fiber paper as a high-temperature flexible circuit substrate. A ceramic fiber paper with all ceramic components had been developed via electrospinning, solving the problems of low strength and severe strength drop at high temperatures of traditional ceramic fiber paper. The tensile strength of the prepared ceramic fiber paper is 2.63 MPa, and the reliable service temperature is 1200 °C. Its bulk density is about 1.5 times that of traditional ceramic fiber paper. It can be printed with patterns by commercial inkjet printers like ordinary printing paper and has excellent printability. The feasibility of ceramic fiber paper as a flexible circuit substrate was verified by constructing a simple circuit. When the fiber paper is significantly bent, the circuit still forms a complete path, which proves that it has a strong application potential for high-temperature flexible circuit substrate and is expected to promote the development of flexible electronic devices serving at extreme high-temperature environments. Optimizing extrusion-based 3D bioprinting of plant cells with enhanced resolution and cell viability

Dezhi Zhou,Peixi Li,Shuang Yu,Zhenhua Cui,Tao Xu,Liliang Ouyang

3D bioprinting of plant cells has emerged as a promising technology for plant cell immobilization and related applications. Despite the numerous progress in mammal cell printing, the bioprinting of plant cells is still in its infancy and needs further investigation. Here, we present a systematic study on optimizing the 3D bioprinting of plant cells, using carrots as an example, towards enhanced resolution and cell viability. We mainly investigated the effects of cell cluster forms and nozzle size on the rheological, extrusion, and printability properties of plant cell bioinks, as well as on the resultant cell viability and growth. We found that when the printing nozzle is larger than 85% of the cell clusters embedded in the bioink, smooth extrusion, and good printability can be achieved together with considerable cell viability and long-term growth. Specifically, we optimized a bioink composited with suspension-cultured carrot cells, which exhibited better transparency, smoother extrusion, and higher cell viability over a one-month culture compared to those with the regular callus or fragmented callus. This work provides a practical guideline for optimizing plant cell bioprinting from the bioink development to the printing outcome assessment. It highlights the importance of selecting a matched nozzle and cell cluster and might provide insights for a better understating and exploitation of plant cell bioprinting.

Zwitterionic Skins with a Wide Scope of Customizable Functionalities

Zhouyue Lei,Peiyi Wu

With growing interest in the fields of wearable devices, it is crucial yet rather challenging to develop skinlike soft conductive materials with customizable functionalities and human tissue-compatible mechanical properties. Previously reported electronic skins struggle to meet the demands for transparence, mechanical adaptability, and stable conductivity during deformation. The recent rise of ionic skins with inorganic salts or ionic liquids doping provides the intrinsic stretchability, however, dilemmas remain for their limited functionalities such as a monotonous appearance and a narrow scope of mechanical and sensory properties. Herein, we design a type of zwitterionic hydrogels from the perspective of molecular interactions, which successfully combines ultrastretchability (>10000% strain), high strength (∼300 kPa), self-healability (at room temperature within 12 h), 3D printability, distinct stimuli-responsibility, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity. The wide spectrum of such excellent properties has been rarely reported before and along with the ability to fabricate bioinspired intelligent skins recreating multiple sensations and mechanical properties of human skin, covering a broad range of sensitivity, and displaying tunable visual effect. We believe this work will inspire the programming of stimuli-responsive skinlike materials and contribute to the smart devices for information transformation between natural and artificial interfaces.
