The K + -induced pectin-based vitrimer hydrogel ink, with dynamic exchange properties, offers an innovative solution for single-channel extrusion-based 3D food printing. However, forming hydrogen-bonded cross-linked vitrimer traditionally requires over 150 mM of K + to overcome the electrostatic repulsion between enzyme-modified pectin (EMP) molecules, which raises health concerns due to the high K + content. This study developed a novel strategy to introduce Ca 2+ bridges to partially weaken the electrostatic repulsion, fabricating low-K + vitrimer gel inks. Using 67 mM K + and 0.9 mM Ca 2+ , a densely cross-linked gel (Ca-EMP-K 67 mM) was formed at 25 °C, exhibiting excellent mechanical performance (~140 g hardness). Meanwhile, the gel possessed excellent self-healing properties, with a relaxation time of 8.3 s at 80 °C, confirming its vitrimer status. Notably, the Ca-EMP-K 67 mM gel ink achieved a ~ 55 % reduction in K + doses while enabling an increase in shaping temperature from 4 °C to 25 °C, compared to the traditional EMP-K 150 mM gel ink. These advancements enabled a low-K + pectin ink for ambient 3D printing. The introduction of Ca 2+ not only reduces the K + concentration requirement but also increases the shaping temperature, broadening the gel ink's applications in the food industry.

The rapid advancement of wearable electrophysiological monitoring has driven a growing demand for soft, conductive materials, particularly hydrogels, due to their exceptional mechanical properties, high conductivity, and biocompatibility. However, hydrogel materials are prone to freezing at subzero temperatures, which leads to material failure. Additionally, prefabricated hydrogel electrodes often lack sufficient conformability and long-term stability, thereby limiting their practical applications. We report a skin-printable hydrogel-based epidermal bioelectrode designed for continuous, high-precision wireless electrophysiological monitoring. The hydrogel, synthesized via an effective one-pot process, comprises gelatin, glycerol, ammonium chloride, and water. Its reversible thermal phase transition enables precise printing onto glabrous and hairy human skin. The in-situ formed hydrogel electrode exhibits excellent adhesion at both the hydrogel/skin and hydrogel/electrode interfaces, with adhesion force reaching 0.9 N/cm and 2.6 N/cm, respectively. The incorporation of glycerol and ammonium chloride imparts remarkable anti-freezing properties, allowing the hydrogel to maintain outstanding mechanical flexibility across a broad temperature range, from ultra-low temperatures of −80 °C to the phase transition temperature of 43.9 °C. Remarkably, the hydrogel retains its optical transparency even when immersed in liquid nitrogen. Additionally, the hydrogel demonstrates superior self-healing, high water retention, and recyclable properties. We successfully validated the hydrogel’s potential for personalized healthcare through high-fidelity electrocardiogram recordings over 80 min during various daily activities, demonstrating its practical applicability. This work highlights the versatility and functionality of skin-printable hydrogel as a promising material for next-generation epidermal electronics.

In recent years, the fabrication of printable graphene inks has attracted considerable attention. However, obtaining green and scalable production of these types of inks with high electrical conductivity using simple methods has always been challenging. Herein, a novel one-step method for preparing graphene inks by microfluidization was developed. Moreover, the resistances of graphene film heaters based on the condensed graphene inks using the screen printing method were adjustable. The results show that the obtained inks contained 1 to 5 layers of graphene with high quality. The prepared graphene films exhibit high electrical conductivity (9.7 × 104 S m−1) and their heaters have fast heat-generating performance; typically, after 5 printing passes, the heater reaches a high temperature of 111 °C within 100 s under 3.0 V, and further rising to a higher temperature of 193.4 °C under 5.0 V. Favorable flexibility and durability are also maintained; specifically, no apparent change of resistance of the graphene film heater can be detected after 5000 times of bending and flexing. The prepared flexible graphene film can be used for heating elements and wearable devices.

A hydrogel that combines both printability and adaptability, high elasticity, and stretchability can provide ideal mechanical properties, and also render complex and accurate construction for ionic skin. However, it is extremely challenging. Here, we propose a colloidal-based double-network (DN) hydrogel as printable inks for high-precision fabrication of ionic skins. Particularly, polyacrylamide (PAAm), as the covalent network that can maintain the long-term material integrity, was combined with gelatin colloidal network to improve the injectability and printability of the resulting DN hydrogels. The DN design cooperatively provides the hydrogels with higher toughness values and deformability than what single colloidal or PAAm network can achieve. Further design of ionic skin based on capacitor microarray was demonstrated to serve as a sensitive and stable capacitor that can respond to external stimuli, thereby allowing to sense the body movements such as finger bending, laugh, and wrist pulse by translating mechanical changes into electric signals. Therefore, this study provides a novel strategy for the design and preparation of high-resolution ionic skins as the wearable sensor.

ZrO 2 @C spherical powder was synthesized via a solvothermal method and utilized in the fabrication of ZrC ceramics through direct ink writing (DIW) to enhance rheological properties and reduce sintering temperature. The effects of solid content on the rheological behavior and printability of the ZrO 2 @C paste were systematically investigated. The ZrO 2 @C paste exhibited typical pseudoplastic fluid characteristics and viscoelastic properties, demonstrating excellent shape retention and shear-thinning behavior. Optimal solid content and printing speed were determined to be 54 wt% and 100 mm/s, respectively, leading to superior printability. Using these optimized parameters, green bodies with planar and lattice structures were rapidly and precisely fabricated. After reactive sintering at 1600 °C, the resulting ZrC ceramic achieved a promising bending strength of 30.9 MPa. This study provides a robust strategy for the rapid fabrication of ultrahigh-temperature ceramics with complex geometries.

Electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) are one of the low temperature bonding materials. It can be used to replace toxic Sn-Pb solder. The key issue for the application of ECAs is how to improve their electrical properties. In the present study, we develop an effective method to promote the electrical properties of ECAs by addition of polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles. PANIs were synthesized via a facile one-step chemical oxidative polymerization method. After adding 0.5 wt% PANI nanoparticles, the conductivity of ECAs increased dramatically by an order of magnitude. The bulk resistivity of 8.8 × 10−5Ω·cm is achieved for 65 wt% silver fillers with 0.5 wt% PANIs loaded ECAs. Besides, this improvement has no negative effect on the shear strength and the aging life of ECAs. Moreover, the use of PANIs not only lowers the percolation threshold of ECAs, but also reduces the cost and improves the bonding reliability. Finally, PANIs enhanced ECAs patterns were successfully printed by a stencil printing method, which proved their potential applications in replacing conventional solder pastes and printing functional circuits. Keywords:Electrically conductive adhesive;polyaniline;electrical property and reliability;low-temperature bonding;printable circuits

Red mud-based geopolymers are an efficient alternative to resolve the high cement consumption in 3D printed concrete (3DPC). From a materials perspective, good printability and mechanical properties are critical to adopting red mud-based geopolymers in 3DPC. In this study, we selected bauxite tailings-red mud and blast furnace slag to prepare geopolymers. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers with 0, 0.3 %, 0.6 %, 0.9 %, and 1.2 % volume fractions were used to reinforce 3D printed red mud-based geopolymers. To evaluate the influence of PVA fiber on the printability and mechanical properties of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer. We tested the workability, extrudability, structural build-up ability, shape stability, and mechanical properties of the red mud-based geopolymer containing different volume fraction PVA fibers, and a microstructural analysis was performed to reveal the interface bond between the fibers and the geopolymer matrix. The results showed that adding PVA fibers impaired the workability of the red mud-based geopolymer mortar. The red mud-based geopolymer mortar showed a more than threefold increase in extrusion pressure compared to the control mixture (P0) when adding 1.2 % vol fiber. For all other mixtures, the increase was less than twice that of the control mixture. The PVA fiber had a significant positive impact on the structural build-up ability and shape stability of the 3D printable red mud-based geopolymer. In addition, PVA fibers promoted the bending strength of the hardened geopolymer specimens better than the compression strength, and the geopolymer gel on the fibers indicated the good interfacial bonding ability of the PVA fiber. This study demonstrates the feasibility of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer and the reinforcement of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer by PVA fibers, providing a material perspective to increase the range of red mud applications in 3D printed concrete.

Integration of functional fillers into liquid metals (LM) induces rheology modification, enabling the free-form shaping of LM at the micrometer scale. However, integrating non-chemically modified low-dimensional materials with LM to form stable and uniform dispersions remain a great challenge. Herein, we propose a solvent-assisted dispersion (SAD) method that utilizes the fragmentation and reintegration of LM in volatile solvents to engulf and disperse fillers. This method successfully integrates MXene uniformly into LM, achieving better internal connectivity than the conventional dry powder mixing (DPM) method. Consequently, the MXene/LM (MLM) coating exhibits high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance (105 dB at 20 μm, which is 1.6 times that of coatings prepared by DPM). Moreover, the rheological characteristic of MLM render it malleable and facilitates direct printing and adaptation to diverse structures. This study offers a convenient method for assembling LM with low-dimensional materials, paving the way for the development of multifunctional soft devices.

Stable rheological properties of ceramic ink are a key requirement for inkjet printing (IJP), which should be satisfied in terms of the Reynolds and Weber numbers. In this paper, the reverse microemulsion was introduced for the synthesis of monodispersed nanosized ceramic powders, and the average size was less than 100 nm. A comparison of two different dispersants, i.e., polyacrylic ammonium (PAANH4) and polyacrylic aid (PAA), revealed that the former exerted a good dispersion effect on the ceramic ink. The sedimentation ratio, zeta potential, surface tension, viscosity, and density of the inks were measured, and the Reynolds and Weber numbers, as well as Z value, were calculated. A stable, homogeneous, and high solid loading (20 wt%) ceramic ink could be achieved after aging for a period of 72 h. Finally, the ceramic inks showed the desired printable property in the inkjet printing process. Combining inkjet printing technology with a sintering process, Ni-Mn-O films have the potential to monitor temperature and humidity parameters for intelligent wearable devices. Keywords:ceramic inks;nanoparticle;rheological property;inkjet;printable suspension

Flexible electronics greatly facilitate human life due to their convenience and comfortable utilization. Liquid metals are an ideal candidate for flexible devices; however, the high surface tension and poor surface wettability restrict their application on diverse substrates. Herein, a printable and recyclable ink composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) and a liquid metal (PVA-LM) was developed to resolve these problems. The materials were designed considering the compatibility between PVA and the liquid metal, and the composite theory was applied to determine the component proportion. The developed composites improved the surface wettability of the liquid metal on diverse substrates, and three-dimensional (3D) printing technology was chosen to maximize the use of this material. Moreover, the PVA-LM ink showed excellent conductivity of about 1.3 × 105 S/m after being turned on, which favored the designing of alarm systems and object locators. The flexible sensors produced with this ink have broad application, high sensitivity, and superstable signal generation even after 200 cycles. When acting as strain sensors, the constructed composites had high sensitivity for monitoring the human movements. Furthermore, liquid metals in printed products can be recycled under alkaline conditions. This study opens a new direction for the next generation of environmentally friendly flexible devices.

Transient and recyclable elastic materials have gained tremendous attention in the development of next-generation electronics. However, the fabrication of robust and printable electronic materials at mild conditions with biopolymer-based materials remains challenging. As a common and benign natural polymer, gelatin has easy availability, water solubility, good flexibility, and full biodegradability, yet its electromechanical performance is poor. Herein, a transient and recyclable gelatin hydrogel with remarkable mechanical resilience, conductivity and printability is constructed by a mild two-step reduction of the incorporated graphene oxide (GO) in ascorbic acid and sodium citrate solutions. The integration of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in the gelatin hydrogel not only provides abundant multiple non-covalent interactions to dissipate the mechanical energy but also endows the hydrogel with desirable electrical conductivity, with the fracture stress and conductivity improved by 53 and 33 times, respectively. Under the synergistic merits, the hydrogel can be assembled as a compliant electromagnetic shielding layer with a shielding effectiveness of 29.4 dB, as well as resistive and capacitive sensors with high sensitivity (0.84 kPa −1 ), large gauge factor (8.2) and excellent stability (>20000 cycles under 60 kPa). As a proof-of-concept, the hydrogel was directly injected onto skin and assembled into a fully degradable self-powered sensing system for Morse code demonstration, and the hydrogel is permeable, photothermally healable, and washable. This work is a step towards the low-cost, ambient and scalable fabrication of green, reliable and versatile flexible electronics.
