Superstrong yet water-detachable eutectogel adhesives

Yichen Wan,Shuaishuai Huang,Yuxuan Sun,He Zhu,Qingbin Zheng,Qi Zhang,Shiping Zhu

Developing superstrong adhesives that can be detached via an environmental friendly trigger under mild operation conditions is highly desirable in industry and it can significantly contribute to sustainability. This work provides a novel design of particular eutectogel adhesives based on poly(acrylic acid)-deep eutectic solvent (PAA-DES). The synthesized adhesives can bond strongly with versatile substrates and be readily detached via simple water soaking. The eutectogel adhesive establishes strong adhesion interactions with the surface of adherends through abundant hydrogen bonds and ion-substrate interactions, with an ultrastrong adhesion strength reaching as high as 12.50 MPa on the glass substrate. The adherends could be easily released by water soaking for several minutes with no damage to the system. Such a novel approach for developing detachable adhesives is believed to have high potential in commercialization that requires temporal joining and assembly processes, including optical lens drilling and wafer dicing.

Laser-Direct-Writing Reversible Aligned Wrinkling on Arbitrary Films Assisted by a Detachable Assembly Strategy

Xi Wang,Keshuai Hu,Juanjuan Wang,Xue Han,Xiaopeng Li,Fan Xu,Yanping Cao,Conghua Lu

Dynamic oriented wrinkling especially on arbitrary film materials is highly desirable yet remains a great challenge. Here, fabrication of programmable aligned wrinkling patterns on different film/substrate systems via a laser-direct-writing (LDW) method is reported, regardless of photofunctionality and transparence of the target films. The key is related to smart introduction of photothermal materials (PTMs) into compliant substrates and even as an independent attachable/detachable layer assembled underneath the film/substrate systems. Experiments and theoretical modeling reveal that with the help of the photothermal effect of PTMs, in situ LDW-induced localized dynamic anisotropic stress field is responsible for the intriguing LDW path-parallel aligned wrinkling. Furthermore, dimensional analysis is carried out and explicit solutions quantifying the connection of wrinkling morphology parameters with the LDW conditions are derived for the first time, which enables theoretical pattern designing. It is highlighted that the attachable/detachable assembly strategy for the independent PTMs layer endows arbitrary film/substrate systems with on-demand photosensitivity when needed, which has been inaccessible previously. As demonstrated, these dynamic oriented wrinkling systems have found broad applications especially in smart soft photonics, e.g., information storage, anticounterfeiting, and responsive optical devices.

Poly(propylene fumarate)-Based Adhesives with a Transformable Adhesion Force for Suture-Free Fixation of Soft Tissue Wounds

Xin Guan,Ting Wei,Jingting Cai,Jianlin Sun,Sen Yu,Dagang Guo

The design of soft tissue adhesives with excellent adhesive performance has drawn much attention in biomedical applications for the suture-free fixation of soft tissue wounds. Poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF)-based materials exhibit excellent biocompatibility with nontoxic products and high mechanical strength and are widely used as bone repair materials. However, shortcomings, including low adhesive strength, low breathability, and poor hydrophobicity, as well as difficulty in detaching in vitro or degrading in vivo after wound tissue healing, limit the potential application of PPF-based materials in soft tissue adhesives. This study presented a biomimetic nucleobase-tackified strategy for designing PPF-based soft tissue adhesives, where adenine was diffusely distributed as a convex second phase in the PPF matrix and provided multipoint interactions with soft tissues. As a result, adenine increased both the lap shear strength by 200% (1.48 ± 0.10 MPa) and the adhesive strength (1.70 ± 0.08 MPa) by 45% in the early stage, and then with adenine degradation, the multipoint interactions disappeared and simultaneously achieved a removable adhesion function with tissue. Moreover, the formed microscale pores from the adenine degradation site also improved the maximum moisture vapor transmission rate by 238% and the hydrophilicity. This detachable adhesive strategy on PPF-based materials will significantly promote the next generation of soft tissue adhesives for biomedical applications.

On-demand detachable and reuseable adhesives assembled by organic-silicon nanogels with wide applicability and excellent harsh-environment resistance

Hui Rong,Pengwei Zhao,Manhua Lu,Liandong Deng,Shuangyang Li,Xiaobin Fan,Zhanpeng Ye,Jianhua Zhang,Anjie Dong

Detachable adhesives are extensively utilized in many fields such as electronic assembly and medical devices, yet achieving a balance between adhesive strength and removability still remains a significant challenge. In this study, we designed a kind of novel adhesive of organic-silicon nanogels (P(TPHA-Si)) based on the self-polymerizing of an organic siloxane monomer (TPHA-Si) in ethanol/water mixture under mild conditions. P(TPHA-Si) self-assembled adhesive possessed not only detachable and reuseable advantages, but also wide applicability and excellent harsh-environment resistance. Remarkably, the adhesive strength to glass reached up to 14.6 MPa, heretofore one of the highest strengths of detachable adhesives. The P(TPHA-Si) adhesive could be easily dissociated by ethanol infiltration, allowing for an environmentally friendly detachability and user-friendly reusability. On the other hand, P(TPHA-Si) adhesive could withstand harsh environmental conditions including different acid, alkali and salt solutions, various organic solvents, and −20–120 °C temperatures. Through empirical and theoretical computations, the molecular mechanism underlying the high-strength, detachable adhesion had been validated and elucidated. Considering the ease of processing, cost-effectiveness, Eco-friendly ethanol-assisted detachability and reusability, as well as strong adhesion under harsh conditions, the design of transparent P(TPHA-Si) adhesive offers a commendable pathway for the development of multifunctional detachable adhesives, which are expected to be able to exhibit great potential for applications in electronics and medical fields.

A facile and rapid route to self-digitization of samples into a high density microwell array for digital bioassays

Xu Cui,Tianbao Hu,Qiang Chen,Qiang Zhao,Yin Wu,Tengbao Xie,Pengyong Liu,Xi Su,Gang Li

Digital bioassays are powerful methods to detect rare analytes from complex mixtures and study the temporal processes of individual entities within biological systems. In digital bioassays, a crucial first step is the discretization of samples into a large number of identical independent partitions. Here, we developed a rapid and facile sample partitioning method for versatile digital bioassays. This method is based on a detachable self-digitization (DSD) chip which couples a reversible assembly configuration and a predegassing-based self-pumping mechanism to achieve an easy, fast, and large-scale sample partitioning. The DSD chip consists of a channel layer used for loading the sample and a microwell layer used for holding the sample partitions. Benefitting from its detachability, the chip avoids a lengthy oil flushing process used to remove the excess sample in loading channels and can compartmentalize a sample into more than 100,000 wells of picoliter volume with densities up to 14,000 wells/cm 2 in less than 30 s. We also demonstrated the utility of the proposed method by applying it to digital PCR and digital microbial assays.

Modified cotton gauze with high hemostatic efficacy due to controllable hygroscopicity and wet tissue adhesiveness

Huiying Li,Shuichang Chen,Hongjian Huang,Yan Fang,Yunxiang Weng,Qinhui Chen,Xinqing Liu,Haiqing Liu

In circumstances of severe traumatic bleeding, urgent bleeding control is vital to the wellness and life of the wounded person. Among many hemostatic measures, gauze is widely used because of cost-effectiveness, safety and efficiency. However, it may suck a large amount of blood before bleeding stops. Thus, advanced hemostatic gauzes less blood loss and quick hemostatic rate and is greatly demanded. Herein, a novel tissue adhesive gauze (TA-gauze) is developed by coating a thin layer of polyethyleneimine/poly(acrylic acid) (PEI/PAA) on the plain cotton gauze. This TA-gauze has a reduced hydrophilicity and gets a new trait of wet tissue adhesiveness from the PEI/PAA coating layer. The TA-gauze shows much improved hemostatic performance in the rat injury models, that is, its blood loss in the rat femoral artery model is just 13% that of the cotton gauze, due to it can retard the blood movement in the gauze and at the seam of gauze/tissue through a synergistic effect of tissue adhesion and hygroscopicity. It is biocompatible and on-demand detachable. The simple preparation procedure and high hemostatic efficiency of the TA-gauze may promise a bright future for an ideal hemostatic dressing for bleeding control.

Reduction/pH-responsive disassemblable MOF-microbial nanohybrid for targeted tumor penetration and synergistic therapy

Xuemei Zeng,Pengjie Li,Shuangqian Yan,Bi-Feng Liu

Nanomedicine that combines nanomaterials and nanotechnologies has been attracting intensive attention for tumor treatment and achieved significant advances. However, their therapeutic efficiency is still limited by the passive circulating and enrichment of the currently widely used nanomaterial carries. Instead, an active nanomaterial carrier with tumor-taxis-like behavior holds the potential to further leap tumor targeting and therapeutic efficiency. Herein, for the first time, we show that a tumor microenvironment responsive disassemblable approach, based on tumor-targeted Escherichia coli bacteria linked with degradable zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) through disulfide bond-contained polymers, can deliver multiple drugs into deep tumor tissue. The carried ZIF-8 nanoparticles will detach from the Escherichia coli via disulfide bond breakage under high concentration glutathione in tumor sites. Furthermore, the small size ZIF-8 nanoparticles can penetrate whole tumor tissue and release drug molecules (doxycycline and indocyanine green) upon pH-responsive degradation. Under light irradiation, indocyanine green generates reactive oxygen species and mild hyperthermia, realizing a photodynamic/photothermal/chemical synergistic therapy along with the doxycycline. In a mouse model, the as-prepared microbial nanohybrid accumulates and releases the therapeutics throughout the tumor tissue and shows a better tumor inhibition efficacy compared to the ZIF-8 and non-disassemblable ZIF-8/microbial platforms. Thus, this work may establish a new strategy for enhancing tumor penetration and targeting and improving treatment efficiency of nanomaterials through a tumor microenvironment responsive disassemblable microbial nanohybrid.

Dual Dynamic Cross-Linked Epoxy Vitrimers Used for Strong, Detachable, and Reworkable Adhesives

Xiaoyu Huang,Chen Ding,Yichun Wang,Songmao Zhang,Xiuhui Duan,Hongzeng Ji

Novel reprocessable thermosetting adhesives (RTAs), which combine high adhesive strength, reusability, disassembly, and recyclability features, have attracted increasing attention. However, developing RTAs with a rapidly adhesive rate while ensuring high adhesive strength and self-healing ability is still a significant challenge. Here, we prepared a novel vitrimer called DAx–DTSAy, which can be used as an RTA. First, by adjusting the ratio of rigid and flexible segments, maximum tensile strength reached 35.92 MPa. Second, the combined effect of dynamic hydroxyl ester bonds and dynamic disulfide bonds resulted in a rapid stress relaxation behavior, with a complete relaxation time 13.6 times shorter than a vitrimer only cross-linked with hydroxy ester bonds. This feature endowed its good self-healing and reprocessing capabilities. After self-healing at 180 °C, the maximum healing rate of mechanical properties was 91.8%. After three reprocesses, the maximum recovery rate of tensile strength was 120.2%. Furthermore, the combination of rigid and flexible segments and the synergistic effect of dual dynamic covalent bonds made DAx–DTSAy capable of use as a high-performance RTA. The lap shear strength of a DAx–DTSAy film on stainless steel reached 18.18 MPa after 15 min, with a recovery rate of 91.9% after 5 rebonding cycles. Additionally, DAx–DTSAy can be disassembled in chemical agents and exhibited better insulation properties compared to traditional epoxy resins. DAx–DTSAy can be employed as a novel high-performance adhesive in applications such as electronic devices and transportation, contributing to the development of thermosetting adhesives toward recyclability and sustainability.

Mussel Foot Protein Inspired Tape-Type Adhesive with Water-Responsive, High Conformal, Tough, and On-Demand Detachable Adhesion to Wet Tissue

Peng Ni,Hongjian Huang,Lidan Zhang,Yiming Chen,Ziyi Liang,Yunxiang Weng,Yan Fang,Haiqing Liu

Wet adhesion is highly demanded in noninvasive wound closure, tissue repair, and biomedical devices, but it is still a big challenge for developing biosafe and tough wet bioadhesives due to low or even nonadhesion in the wet state for conventional adhesives. Inspired by the wet-adhesion-contributing factors of mussel foot proteins, a water-responsive dry robust tissue adhesive PAGU tape is made with thickness of <0.5 mm through fast UV-initiated copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA), gelatin (Gel), and hexadecenyl-1,2-catechol (UH). The tape shows strong cohesive mechanical properties and strong interfacial adhesion bonds. Upon application onto wet tissue, the adhesive tape can conform to the tissue, quickly dry tissue surface through absorbing surface/interfacial water and then allows formation of interfacial bonding with a high interfacial toughness of ≈818 J m −2 . Furthermore, it can be readily detached by treating with aq. urea solution. A highly efficient avenue is provided here for producing conformable, tough, and easy detachable wet bioadhesive tapes.
