Controllable fabrication of metal microcracks on rubber by mesh-like polymer mediated electroless plating for ultrasensitive and wide-range strain sensors

Weiting Sheng,Xiaoyun Bi,Zhaoyan Huang,Liangzhang Tang,Honghan Sun,Zhibo Cao,Can Jiang

Strain sensors based on crack-sensitive structures have gained attention for their exceptional sensitivity. However, the geometry of the crack structures significantly impacts the balance between sensitivity and strain range, while the controllable formation of such cracks remains a challenge, often leading to performance variations. Herein, we developed an ultrasensitive strain sensor using a mesh-like polymer-mediated electroless plating (MPMEP) strategy to construct controlled nickel microcrack structures on natural rubber (NR). Poly(acrylic acid) brushes grafted via surface-initiated ATRP on NR served as interfacial layers, ensuring consistent crack morphology. The sensor achieved a high gauge factor of 417, a wide strain range of 50 %, and rapid response/recovery times (46/58 ms), with stable performance over 10,000 cycles. Compared to existing technologies, our MPMEP strategy uniquely combines high sensitivity with scalability. Moreover, its robustness and flexibility position it for wearable applications, including real-time human motion monitoring and health management. This work addresses long-standing challenges in crack-based strain sensors, presenting a reproducible and scalable platform for next-generation flexible electronics.

Slug flow hydrodynamics of immiscible fluids within a rectangular microchannel towards size-controllable fabrication of dextran-based cryogel beads

Tingting Guan,Yawei Gao,Manman Pan,Yuwei Wu,Songhong Zhang,Linhong Xu,Lingyu Zhu,Junxian Yun

Cryogel beads are novel adsorbents with potential applications in biotechnology, environmental and tissue engineering. However, the controllable preparation of cryogel beads with expected small and uniform diameters is a challenging work. The micro-flow-focusing method combining with the cryo-polymerization has been suggested as a new approach for the fabrication of cryogel beads. In order to form the uniform droplet, the slug flow is generated in the microchannel, so the slug flow hydrodynamics are crucial and fundamental for this process. In the present work, the dextran-methacrylate (Dex-MA-PEGDA) solution and ethyl acetate containing surfactant of Span 80 were used as the aqueous phase and the water-immiscible, respectively. The fabrication of dextran-based cryogel beads and the slug flow hydrodynamics in a rectangular microchannel were investigated experimentally. The flow regime map was proposed and the typical regime boundaries were measured and correlated, and the formation mechanisms of slugs were also discussed. The regime boundaries were correlated by Weber number and Capillary number, i.e., We o  = 58.16 Ca w 0.92 for the boundary between the annular and the slug flow, and We o  = 4.12 Ca w 0.09 for the slug and the bubbly flow, respectively. Several crucial parameters of the droplets generated by the slug flow, i.e., the aqueous slug length, the aqueous slug velocity and the aqueous droplet size, were measured and correlated. The Dex-MA-PEGDA cryogel beads were prepared successfully under different conditions and their diameters were correlated to the sizes of the droplets. Eventually, the uniform size distributions and supermacroporous microstructures of dextran-based cryogel beads were demonstrated.

High-Throughput and Controllable Fabrication of Helical Microfibers by Hydrodynamically Focusing Flow

Wenjun Ma,Dong Liu,Sida Ling,Jingwei Zhang,Zhuo Chen,Yuan Lu,Jianhong Xu

Due to the unique spiral geometry, different functional helical fibers are fabricated to perform vital tasks, including cargo transportation, medical treatment, cell manipulation, and so on. Although microfluidic techniques are widely used to fabricate helical fibers, the problems of channel blockage and spinning instability have not been well solved, which limits the mass preparation and practical application of spiral microfibers. In addition, the spinning mechanism is simply limited to liquid rope coiling, which has little impact on the design of microfluidic devices. Here, new types of microfluidic devices, which were easy to make and exhibited excellent spiral spinning performance, were designed. It was found that adding a sleeve layer outside the inner core needle in a coaxial microfluidic device could effectively promote the stable formation of helical microfibers. This novel microchannel could fabricate helical microfibers of more than 100 m in length continuously at one time with almost no blockage or deformation, and the key parameters of the fibers could be precisely adjusted. Combined with micro-particle image velocimetry (micro-PIV) measurements, it was confirmed that the improvement in the spinning performances was mainly attributed to the emergence of a focusing flow in the presence of the sleeve layer. After loading magnetic nanoparticles, the helical microfibers exhibited excellent motion manipulation capabilities, which showed great potential for drug delivery, cargo transportation, clogging removal, etc. This new design not only realized the high-throughput fabrication of helical microfibers but also provided deeper insights into the underlying mechanisms of spiral generation and new ideas for the design of microfluidic devices.
