Acarid Suction Cup-Inspired Rapid and Tunable Magnetic Adhesion

Xiaocheng Hu,Yimou Fu,Yide Liu,Binhong Liu,Shaoxing Qu

Adhesion appears in nature as a kind of clinging strategy for living creatures to survive in a complex environment. Nevertheless, the artificial counterpart applications are limited by many factors, such as slow responding rate and high driving voltage. In this paper, a novel magnetic adhesion achieved by the actuation of Ecoflex embedded with iron particles is presented, which is demonstrated by a magnetic suction cup (MSC) that can switch the adhesion state within 500 ms. Compared with suction cups made of the dielectric elastomer in existing literature, the present work's driving voltage is safe for humans. Furthermore, a mechanical model is developed and verified to optimize the design of the MSCs. By applying an altering magnetic field, the adhesive force varying with time exhibits complex waveforms such as sinusoidal wave, triangle wave, square wave, and even pulse wave can be achieved. For some situations that large adhesion force is not necessarily considered while the adhesion requires to be accurately and quickly controlled, such as transfer printing and intelligent sensing, the magnetic adhesion demonstrated in this article will enrich the future available applications.

A self-sensing, superhydrophobic, heterogeneous graphene network with controllable adhesion behavior

Guomin Ding,Weicheng Jiao,Liuyang Chen,Meiling Yan,Lifeng Hao,Rongguo Wang

Smart superhydrophobic surfaces with controllable adhesion behavior or sensing capability have become a research hotspot in many areas, such as self-cleaning and microdroplet transportation. Herein, we design and fabricate a superhydrophobic, open-cell graphene network with a polypropylene coating (PP/OCGN) via a new method of boiling coating. The adhesive force of PP/OCGN for water droplets can be controlled easily from 66.8 μN to 32.3 μN by adjusting the soaking time. Using the PP/OCGN with controllable adhesion behavior, the lossless transportation of water microdroplets has been achieved. What's more, because of the boiling coating process, the PP/OCGN exhibits a heterogeneous network, which has the coated graphene on the surface and the uncoated graphene in the inner part. By means of the special network and strong water repellency of PP/OCGN, we report for the first time a conductive, superhydrophobic graphene material with a self-sensing capability for continuously falling water droplets. When the water droplets fall on the surface, the PP/OCGN with low adhesive force not only makes the droplets bounce off successfully, but also has a rapid response to the bouncing process through changing the resistance. The size of falling water droplets can also be determined. Therefore, our multifunctional superhydrophobic PP/OCGN can meet multiple needs simultaneously, such as self-cleaning and detecting raindrops, and it has great application prospects in the future.

Biomimetic catalysis design enables controllable and adjustable cold-set protein adhesive

Zhiqiang Zhu,Nairong Chen,Youhui Huang,Lihui Chen,Li Shuai,Feng Li

Nature excels in synthesizing advanced protein adhesives under mild condition, utilizing enzyme catalysis to achieve controllable and adjustable cold-set adhesion. To emulate this natural prowess in synthetic protein adhesives (SPAs), which are often hindered by low reactivity, weak controllability, and poor selectivity, we developed a biomimetic-enzyme-catalysis strategy to successfully construct SPAs with cold-set adhesion function via a facile one-pot method. By employing magnesium oxide (MgO) as a catalyst, the resultant adhesive demonstrated enhanced and versatile adhesion capabilities (1.67/0.98 MPa to wood for dry/wet condition, respectively), with controllable and adjustable adhesion by tailoring crosslinked and catalytic sites. Moreover, this design was applicable to various types of crosslinkers and proteins to create more robust cold-set SPAs. The investigation of the catalysis mechanism has revealed that MgO selectively and controllably interacts with adhesive molecules, effectively lowering the energy barrier necessary for successful molecular crosslinks at room temperature. Together with its demonstrated potential in large-scale and long-term applications, our strategy provides a viable pathway for the eco-friendly and scalable production of high-quality cold-set SPAs that rival natural protein adhesives.

Controllable adhesion behavior in underwater environments

Hongyue Wu,Bolun Zhang,Xiaochen Liu,Yuzhou Liu,Jing Cui,Zhongyi Chu

Microstructure adhesive pads can effectively manipulate objects in underwater environments. Current adhesive pads can achieve adhesion and separation with rigid substrates underwater; however, challenges remain in the control of adhesion and detachment of flexible materials. Additionally, underwater object manipulation necessitates considerable pre-pressure and is sensitive to water temperature fluctuations, potentially causing object damage and complicating adhesion and detachment processes. Thus, we present a novel, controllable adhesive pad inspired by the functional attributes of microwedge adhesive pads, combined with a mussel-inspired copolymer (MAPMC). In the context of underwater applications for flexible materials, the use of a microstructure adhesion pad with microwedge characteristics (MAPMCs) is a proficient approach to adhesion and detachment operations. This innovative method relies on the precise manipulation of the microwedge structure's collapse and recovery during its operation, which serves as the foundation for its efficacy in such environments. MAPMCs exhibit self-recovering elasticity, water flow interaction, and tunable underwater adhesion and detachment. Numerical simulations elucidate the synergistic effects of MAPMCs, highlighting the advantages of the microwedge structure for controllable, non-damaging adhesion and separation processes. The integration of MAPMCs into a gripping mechanism allows for the handling of diverse objects in underwater environments. Furthermore, by merging MAPMCs and a gripper within a linked system, our approach enables automatic, non-damaging adhesion, manipulation, and release of a soft jellyfish model. The experimental results indicate the potential applicability of MACMPs in underwater operations.
