Ionic Network Based on Dynamic Ionic Liquids for Electronic Tattoo Application

Zhiwu Chen,Naiwei Gao,Yanji Chu,Yonglin He,Yapei Wang

Electronic tattoos as an emerging epidermal electronic are alluring in the field of wearable electronics for their lightweight and noninvasive properties. However, the combination of flexibility, skin biocompatibility, adhesion, repairability, and erasability remains a challenge for fabricating electronic tattoos. Hence, a dynamic ionic liquid is prepared which is ideally suited for making an electronic tattoo with these challenging features at the same time. Such an intrinsically flexible electronic tattoo can be firmly attached to human skin with negligible irritation. More importantly, the existence of dynamic covalent chemistry provides the electronic tattoo with healing and erasable abilities under mild redox conditions. Owing to the high ionic conductivity of ionic liquids, the electronic tattoo exhibits excellent sensing performance in response to the temperature variation and tensile strain, which can intelligently monitor body temperature, pulse, and movement. As an extension of the application, a specially designed quadrilateral electronic tattoo can sense and distinguish multiple signals simultaneously. This concept of electronic tattoo based on the dynamic ionic liquid shows great potentials in the applications of intelligent wearable electronics.

Erasable polymer hydrogel wells

Kaiqiang Zhang,Nan He,Chunxiao Zhang,Xu Wang

Solid vessels are robust but are difficult to remove and re-form. Liquid walls are adaptive and self-healable, but complex system designs or pre-treatments are usually needed for controlling the shape of liquid walls. Here, we describe the fabrication of free-standing and erasable polymer hydrogel walls with desired shapes in a facile manner. We fabricated a series of metal-coordinating polymer hydrogels with controllable rheological properties. Systematic studies to investigate the interfacial behaviors between the hydrogels and solid substrates (e.g., poly(tetrafluoroethylene), polyvinyl chloride , and quartz) or confined liquids (e.g., n-hexadecane, nonane , toluene, and 1-nonanol) were performed, and the optimized hydrogels displayed excellent performance to serve as hydrogel wells to confine non-polar and weakly polar liquids. The success in hydrogel-templated polymerization demonstrated the potential application of the hydrogel wells as reaction vessels and verified the importance of easily erasable properties of the reaction vessels. The shape-controllable polymer hydrogel wells have the advantages of both solid and liquid vessels, they are free-standing, simply erasable, and multifunctional, making them potentially useful as transient reaction vessels.

A water-soluble sunlight erasable ink based on [4 + 4] cycloaddition of 9-substituted anthracene

Haipeng Lu,Xiang Wang,Xianjing Zhou,Wei Zhang,Xinping Wang

Over the past few decades, global paper consumption has continued to increase. The growing demand for paper has aggravated the negative impact on the environment. Therefore, the development of an erasable ink or rewritable paper seems to be an ideal way to alleviate this crisis. In this work, a hydrophilic anthracene derivative with nucleophilic substitution at position 9 was designed and synthesized. Such an anthracene derivative could disperse in aqueous solution and dimerize fast under irradiation of UV or visible light, accompanied by fluorescence quenching. Its aqueous solution could be used as a novel ink to be written on conventional paper, of which the handwriting was only visible under ultraviolet light. When exposed to sunlight, the handwriting would gradually disappear and not reappear after irradiating with ultraviolet light or heating. Therefore, it can be used as an erasable ink for applications in data confidentiality or paper reuse.

Infusing Lubricant onto Erasable Microstructured Surfaces toward Guided Sliding of Liquid Droplets

Xia-chao Chen,Ke-feng Ren,Jing Wang,Wen-xi Lei,Jian Ji

Introducing a lubricant layer onto surfaces has emerged as a novel strategy to address a wide range of interface-related challenges. Recent studies of lubricant-infused surfaces have extended beyond repelling liquids to manipulating the mobility of fluids. In this study, we report a design of slippery surfaces based on infusing lubricant onto a polyelectrolyte multilayer film whose surface microstructures can be erased rapidly under mild condition. Unlike other lubricant-infused surfaces, the liquid movements (e.g., moving resistance and direction) on such surfaces can be manipulated via programming the surface microstructures beforehand. The work reported here offers a versatile design concept of lubricant-infused surfaces and may turn on new applications of this emerging class of bioinspired materials.
