Breathable and washable MXene@gallic acid cross-linked textile assisted by borax for personal multi-protection wearables

Biaobiao Yan,Xiaoting Liao,Tianlei Sun,Leilei Wu,Zhenfei Guo,Man Zhou,Yuanyuan Yu,Qiang Wang,Chaobin He,Ping Wang

Achieving multifunctional integration with comfortability and durability comparable to conventional textiles is one of the ultimate pursuits of personal protective wearables. Herein, a multi-protective textile with breathable, moisture-permeable and washable properties is reported, which is realized by cross-linking of electroactive MXene@gallic acid (MG) with the cationized cotton. Cationic modification reduces the charge repulsion between MG and cotton fibers, and promotes the deposition of conductive media on textile surface. After borax (STB) cross-linking, the obtained textile exhibits superior service stability and can be subjected to conventional washing, exhibiting antioxidant stability during natural storage. Importantly, the cross-linked textile inherits the properties of good breathability, softness and bendability as the original fabric. With the outstanding conductivity (260 mS/cm) and high absorptivity of the solar spectrum (0.920), the textile was used for Joule heating and solar heating, demonstrating their potential in the field of thermal management. Meanwhile, the textile demonstrates excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus , and maintained satisfactory antibacterial effect (>90 %) even after ten washing cycles. This facile strategy for fabricating personal protective textiles, based on cross-linking cotton fiber with electroactive mediators offers favorable durability, comfortability and multifunctionality, providing a scalable and sustainable approach for manufacturing multi-protective wearables.

Conductive Ink Based on GNSs/MWCNTs for Fabricating Wearable Wash-Resistant Electrothermal Devices

Yifei Bie,Yunhao Liu,Haoyang Xu,Yufei Tian,Xin Wang,Jun Qian

Flexible wearable devices, which combine lightness, comfort, and intelligence, are developing rapidly in the fields of health monitoring, human–computer interaction, energy, and biomedicine. There is also a growing demand for a low-cost, washable, and flexible wearable device to meet the requirements of resource conservation and sustainability. In this study, graphene nanosheets (GNSs)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) washable conductive ink was prepared by liquid-phase exfoliation using graphite, MWCNTs, silane coupling agents, and high-adhesion resin. Its square resistance (Rsq) is only 26 Ω/sq (25 μm), and it can keep the resistance change within 10% after 5 simulated machine washes (1 h per wash). In addition, the printed electrothermal fabric (4 × 4 cm) can reach 54 °C at a low voltage of 5 V and consumes only 1.25 W. After 5 washes, the saturation temperature can still reach 50 °C, enabling insulation on the surface of the body and helping to create a smarter and more convenient personal thermal management system.

Washable and Multifunctional Electronic Textiles Via In Situ Lamination for Personal Health Care

Hong Xinghua,Sun Wei,Zhang Songlin,Tang Zhaogang,Zhou Mengjuan,Guo Shuai,Guo Xingkui,Zhao Weili,Wang Xiaolin,Chen Haiming,Zhang Ziquan,Mao Dongsheng,He Chaobin,Tan Swee Ching

Limitations of current electronic textiles (e-textiles), including poor washability, instability, and inferior sensing capability, are concerns hindering their broad and practical applications in personal health care management, virtual games, sports, and more. Here, we report an RGO/PANI e-textile via alternative coatings of in situ reduced graphene oxides (RGO) and in situ polymerized polyaniline (PANI), establishing a laminated structure on a knitted textile substrate. As a result of an in situ lamination strategy, our e-textile exhibits excellent breathability (1428 mm s −1 , greater than that of bare cotton fabric) and outstanding sensitivity (gage factor of 39.7) over a wide strain range (~ 0.0625–200%). Importantly, we observed exceptional sensing durability even after severe mechanical disturbance of stretching, bending, or twisting (> 1500 cycles) and daily machine washes. Detailed analysis revealed that our proposed in situ lamination approach enabled the physical and chemical interactions between sensing active materials and the textile substrate. Furthermore, the electromechanical behavior of our RGO/PANI e-textile was thoroughly analyzed based on an equivalent electrical circuit, which agreed well with the experimental data. Example applications of the e-textile were demonstrated for personal health care management, including body motion monitoring, emotional sensing, and flatfoot gait correction. The RGO/PANI e-textile presented in this study holds significant implications for the evolution of health care applications utilizing smart e-textiles. Graphical Abstract

All-naturally structured tough, ultrathin, and washable dual-use composite for fruits preservation with high biosafety evaluation

Cong Cong Qin,Somia Yassin Hussain Abdalkarim,Ming Chen Yang,Yan Juan Dong,Hou-Yong Yu,Dan Ge

This work develops a sustainable and global strategy to enhance fruit preservation efficacy. The dual-use composite coating or film comprises silk fibroin/cellulose nanocrystals (SF/CNC) with superior ductility through a synergistic plasticizing effect of glycerol and natural aloe-emodin powder (AE) as antimicrobial agents. To confirm our strategy, two common fruit preservation materials (edible surface coating-SCA-CS; packaging film-SCA-PF) and five different fruits (strawberries, bananas, apples, blueberries, and guavas) have been used. Moreover, SCA-CS coating with antibacterial and antioxidant activities formed an ultrathin layer on the fruit's surfaces with a thickness of 7.7 μm and could be easily washable. Therefore, bananas and strawberries' shelf-life with SCA-CS coating can be extended for 9 days and 6 days, respectively. The discharge water of SCA-CS has excellent biosafety in an indoor environment with no threat to plant health (microgreens bean sprouts germination as a case study). The plant exhibited positive results within 15 days, and leaves maintained their green color with a germination rate of 97.6 %. The toughness of SCA-PF film increased by 14,685.7 % with a water vapor transmission rate (WPTR) of 17 g mm m −2  day −1 , which confirms that the concept of SCA-PF film and SCA-CS coating are feasible to be used for fruit preservation/packaging.

Robust Textile-Based Electromagnetic Audio Interfaces

Xiao Guan,Tianjun Lan,Dazhe Zhao,Zhe Liu,Kaijun Zhang,Yexi Zhou,Yu Zhao,Yucong Pi,Chengyue Lu,Hanran Yu,Rongyao Pan,Haipeng Xia,Bingpu Zhou,Junwen Zhong

Textiles with inherently porous architectures are commonly employed for acoustic absorption. Although recent advances in textile-based audio interfaces have enabled sound emission, they lack robustness under unstructured conditions. Therefore, this study introduces a strategy that integrates textile structures with a durable actuation mechanism to overcome these limitations. Through optimized theoretical modeling, this study enhances the vibration amplitudes, effectively compensating for the intrinsic acoustic damping losses of textiles, achieving a relatively high and flat sound pressure level of 71.7 ± 3.3 dB. Notably, the audio interface maintains stable performance under various mechanical deformations, including stretching, compression, bending, and twisting. Furthermore, this audio interface preserves the essential characteristics of textiles, such as washability and breathability, and remains fully functional even in extremely humid conditions, such as heavy perspiration. The versatility of this approach is demonstrated through three practical applications: sound-beanie, talking-cloth, and sound-sofa. In each case, this audio interface delivers high-quality acoustic performance and robustness to unstructured conditions. The proposed strategy is anticipated to enhance the design of wearable audio interfaces for real-world applications.

Textiles/Metal–Organic Frameworks Composites as Flexible Air Filters for Efficient Particulate Matter Removal

Kun Zhang,Qian Huo,Ying-Ying Zhou,Hong-Hong Wang,Gao-Peng Li,Yao-Wu Wang,Yao-Yu Wang

The health-threatening air pollution, especially from particulate matter (PM), has triggered increasing demands for developing low-cost and long-service-life air-cleaning technologies. In the present contribution, a range of high-efficiency textiles/metal–organic framework (MOF) composites (MOFs@textiles) air filters with excellent washable reusability is presented. By processing MOFs onto textile substrates via an eco-friendly solvent-free method to enable the microporous feature and also strong PM adhesion, we develop flexible, highly effective air filters with >95.00% PM removal efficiency (e.g., MiL-53(Al)@Aramid, PM2.5: 95.30%, PM10: 96.11%) under harmful air quality conditions (average PM2.5 mass concentration > 280 μg m–3 and PM10 > 360 μg m–3). Therefore, these MOFs@textiles are promising composites for producing efficient and recyclable out-/indoor air purifiers.

Ultra-High Radial Elastic Aerogel Fibers for Thermal Insulation Textile

Jiahui Wang,Lipeng Liu,Wenlian Dong,Junhui Tao,Rui Fu,Yinghui Liu,Xin Yang,Hanqing Yu,Huazheng Sai

When nanoporous aerogels with excellent thermal insulation performance are processed into 1D fibers, they have great potential for application in the field of personal thermal management. However, coping with the impact of external forces, especially radial extrusion, and maintaining the macro morphology and microstructure of aerogels during use are remaining issues. To address these challenges, this study proposes a method that uses ultrafine and ultra-highly entangled bacterial cellulose nanofibers as the basis to achieve high radial elasticity by forming an isomorphic coating of rigid silica on the soft gel skeleton of aerogel fibers. The obtained aerogel fibers can achieve an elastic recovery of 88% over 50 compression cycles under 90% strain, and they can be knotted, woven into textiles, and are washable. This strategy improves the radial compression resistance of aerogel fibers, providing rich possibilities for the development of aerogel fibers with excellent mechanical properties.

Washable Patches with Gold Nanowires/Textiles in Wearable Sensors for Health Monitoring

Zhiqi Zhao,Qiujin Li,Yu Dong,Jixian Gong,Zheng Li,Jianfei Zhang

Textile-based flexible electronic devices have attracted tremendous attention in wearable sensors due to their excellent skin affinity and conformability. However, the washing process of such devices may damage the electronic components. Here, a textile-based piezoresistive sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity was fabricated through the layered integration of gold nanowire (AuNW)-impregnated cotton fabric and silver ink screen-printed nylon fabric electrodes, sealing with Parafilm. The prepared piezoresistive sensing patch exhibits outstanding performance, including high sensitivity (914.970 kPa–1, <100 Pa), a fast response time (load: 38 ms, recovery: 34 ms), and a low detection limit (0.49 Pa). More importantly, it can maintain a stable signal output even after 30 000 s of loading–unloading cycles. Furthermore, this sensing patch can efficiently detect breathing, pulse, heart rate, and joint movements during the activities. After five cycles of mechanical washing, the piezoresistive performance keeps 90.3%, demonstrating the high feasibility of this sensor in practical applications. This sensor has a simple fabrication, with good fatigue resistance and durability due to its all-fabric core element. It provides a strategy to address the machine-washing issues in textile electronics. This washable textile sensor is expected to show significant potential in future applications of health monitoring, human–machine interfaces, and artificial skin.

Smart and programmed thermo-wetting yarns for scalable and customizable moisture/heat conditioning textiles

Jiechang Liang,Lei Ding,Zilin Yu,Xingcai Zhang,Shiguo Chen,Yuanfeng Wang

Programmable smart textiles with adaptive moisture/heat conditioning (MHC) capabilities are globally being sought to meet the requirements of comfort, energy efficiency, and health protection. However, a universal strategy for fabricating truly scalable and customizable MHC textiles is lacking. In this study, we introduce a scalable in situ grafting approach for the continuous fabrication of two series of smart textile yarns with opposite thermoresponsive wetting behaviors. In particular, the wetting transition temperature can be precisely programmed by adjusting the grafting formula, making the yarns highly customizable. The smart yarns demonstrated excellent mechanical strength, whiteness, weavability, biocompatibility, and washability (with more than 60 home washes), comparable to those of regular textile yarns. They can serve as building blocks independently or in combination to create smart textiles with adaptive sweat wicking and intelligent moisture/heat regulation capabilities. A proposed hybrid textile integrating both the two series of smart yarns can offer dry-contact and cooling/keep-warming effects of approximately 1.6/2.8 °C, respectively, in response to changes in ambient temperature. Our method provides a rich array of design options for nonpowered MHC textiles while maintaining a balance between traditional wearing conventions and large-scale production.

Waterproof, breathable and washable triboelectric nanogenerator based on electrospun nanofiber films for wearable electronics

Na Sun,Gui-Gen Wang,Hai-Xu Zhao,Ya-Wei Cai,Jia-Ze Li,Gui-Zhong Li,Xiao-Nan Zhang,Bao-Lin Wang,Jie-Cai Han,Yuanhao Wang,Ya Yang

Flexible, breathable and widely implementable triboelectric nanogenerator is highly demanded for wearable electronics to satisfy the technical requirements of the Internet of Things (IoT). The fabric-based wearable electronic devices have conspicuous advantages, however, how to optimize their electrical performance and comfortable characteristics is a great challenge. Here, we reported a waterproof, breathable and wearable electronics by fabricating nanofiber-based triboelectric nanogenerator (NF-TENG). The NF-TENG was consisted of the electrospun PA66/MWCNTs (multi-walled carbon nanotubes) nanofibers film with the nano-net structure used as the tribo-positive layer and the electrospun PVDF nanofibers film used as the tribo-negative layer, respectively. Owing to the coupling effect between the nano-network structure and porous structure , the effective contact area is enhanced effectively. A 20 mm × 20 mm NF-TENG demonstrates a peak voltage, current and a maximum power density up to 142 V, 15.5 μA and 1.30 W/m 2 , respectively. The NF-TENG can be worth spread application to resolve power source for some wearable electronics. Also, the as-obtained NF-TENG has high gas-permeability of 11.5 mm s −1 benefiting from the hierarchical networks, and thus exhibits good washable characteristics. These results indicate that the NF-TENG is promising for providing a new vision in the area of self-powered wearable technology .

Flexible H2S sensors: Fabricated by growing NO2-UiO-66 on electrospun nanofibers for detecting ultralow concentration H2S

Xiuling Zhang,Xiaoke Hao,Zhenyu Zhai,Jiaona Wang,Huiyu Li,Yaxin Sun,Yue Qin,Ben Niu,Congju Li

Wearable electronics based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) capable of monitoring various environmental pollutants is a promising approach for realizing gas sensing of chemical information. However, their sensing application combined with electronic textile with breathable, washable and flexible features has not been completely established yet. Herein, we describe a facile and effective strategy to fabricate flexible gas sensor for rapidly detecting hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) through integrating NO 2 -UiO-66 on electrospun nanofibers membrane (NO 2 -UiO-66 NM) firmly and uniformly. Different from the inherent brittleness and poor processability of powder MOFs, the achieved NO 2 -UiO-66 NM delivers enhanced porosity and surface area, outstanding flexibility, desirable breathability, stable to washing and strong accessibility, more suitable for practical applications. Consequently, the fabricated NO 2 -UiO-66 NM sensor exhibits a significantly high detection selectivity for H 2 S among various analytes (H 2 S, SO 2 , C 6 H 6 , CO and NH 3 ) and remarkable sensitivity for H 2 S with unprecedentedly ultralow detection limit reaching down to 10 ppb. Moreover, the sensing performance can be greatly remained after around five weeks at concentration down to 1 ppm; also, there are slight impact of deformation on sensing activities, revealing superior H 2 S sensing stability. This study offers a feasible solution to develop electronic textiles for chemical sensing application.
