Electronic textiles (e-textiles) typically comprise fabric substrates with electronic components capable of heating, sensing, lighting and data storage. In this work, we rationally designed and fabricated anisotropic light/thermal emitting e-textiles with great mechanical stability based on a sandwich-structured tri-electrode device. By coating silver nanowire network/thermal insulation bilayer on fabrics, an anisotropic thermal emitter can be realized for smart heat management. By further covering the emissive film and the top electrode on the bilayer, light emitters with desirable patterns and colors are extracted from the top surface via an alternative current derived electroluminescence. Both the light and thermal emitting functions can be operated simultaneously or separately. Particularly, our textiles exhibit reliable heating and lighting performance in water, revealing excellent waterproof feature and washing stability.

Wastewater treatment for oil–water emulsions is a critical challenge in the environmental and energy sectors. The oil–water separation based on super-wettability membrane has received widespread attention. However, traditional membranes struggle with severe irreversible fouling due to interactions between emulsified oil and hydrophilic organic compounds in practical wastewater, problematizing continuous separation. Here, a non-synthetic polymer membrane with easy-washability after fouling is reported, which shows full recovery of original separation efficiency. The membrane is composed of cellulose blended with sepiolite, which encapsulates and infiltrates the silica nanofiber membrane through silanol condensation and capillary action, then forms a “tight top, bottom, and inside” flexible fusion structure in one step. The dynamic water absorption capability of sepiolite and cellulose can create an enhanced hydration layer on the dense membrane surface, this allows the membrane to maintain structural integrity and stable separation efficiency even in oil emulsion wastewater containing hydrophilic organic compounds. Also, the membrane may undergo assimilative healing by interacting with pollutants to form part of the membrane structure. So, it shows great performances for extended separation, withstanding oil intrusion pressures over 600 kPa, and nearly 100 % removal for oil emulsions. This promising material offers a universal modification strategy with broad wastewater treatment applications.

This study fabricated a flexible and washable self-powered biosensor—based on cellulose textiles—for sensing glucose in sweat. The sensor is integrated with T-shirts for practical use. The cellulose fiber was modified with carbon nanotubes and reduced oxide graphene to decrease its electron transfer resistance and ohmic resistance. Due to their low resistance, the bioelectrodes display high electrocatalytic efficiency of glucose oxidation and oxygen reduction. The biosensors are assembled by packaging the bioanodes and gel electrolytes together. The assembled biosensors have a low limit of detection (6.7 µM) and a wide linear range (0.02–0.5 mM). The great sensing performances are strongly associated with the location of bioanodes and biocathodes. The outer biocathode protects the central bioanode that comes from oxygen and ensures the structural integrity of the device during bending cycles. It also reduces the damage caused by the washing. The biosensor also exhibited selectivity, repeatability, and great stability in different pHs and during long-term storage. Finally, the average recoveries in real sweat are 104.9 to 106.0%. Thus, the flexible and washable self-powered biosensors have great potential for diabetes diagnosis at an early stage by sensing glucose in sweat. Graphical abstract

Smart textile-based wearable devices show promising application prospects for detecting NH 3 concentrations in environmental and health monitoring. However, mechanical loads and aqueous environments during use can damage the interface between the textile fiber and the sensing layer, posing a challenge to the reliable performance of textile-based sensors. Herein, inspired by the adhesion chemistry of mussels, we report a fatigue-resistant, washable, and environmentally friendly smart textile (PANI-PDA-BF) for monitoring NH₃. This smart textile utilizes natural bamboo fiber (BF) cloth as the substrate, with a polydopamine (PDA) coating to enhance the bonding performance of the polyaniline (PANI) sensing layer to the bamboo fiber, thereby improving fatigue resistance and washability. Experimental results demonstrate that the sensitivity of PANI-PDA-BF only reduced by 11 % and 22 % after 10,000 tensile cycles and 30 min of washing deionized water, which is much lower than the 51 % and 48 % of PANI-BF (without PDA coating). Additionally, PANI-PDA-BF exhibits outstanding environmental-friendly due to the inherent biodegradation of PDA and BF. PANI-PDA-BF's exceptional NH 3 sensing performance, durability, and environmental-friendliness make it an up-and-coming candidate for NH 3 monitoring wearable devices.

Electronic textiles, an emerging class of electronic technology, offer exciting opportunities for seamless integration with the human body. Numerous applications have been developed based on electronic textiles. However, researches on integrating multiple electronic textile-based devices are still few. In this study, we present a system integrated with an electrocardiogram monitoring sensor and an electroluminescence device based on stretchable and washable conductive microtextiles. The signal is acquired by an electrocardiograph amplifier and displayed by a dual-color electroluminescence device based on the processed results. The integrated electronic device has excellent moisture permeability and comfort for long-term wearing. The system reported in this study opens a new avenue for the application of electronic textiles in health monitoring, robotic prosthetics, and competitive sports. Graphical abstract
