The advancement of functional adhesives featuring recyclable and repairable properties is of great significance in interfacial science and engineering. Herein, a series of high-strength, recyclable fluorine-containing adhesives (ESO x -FPF) were designed and synthesized by crosslinking two prepolymers, FPF-B (derived from side-chain fluorinated diol, isocyanate, and aminoboric acid) and ESO-B (synthesized from biobased epoxy soybean oil and aminoboric acid), through dynamic boro-oxygen bonds. The resulting adhesive exhibited an optimal tensile strength of 42 MPa and the shear strength on steel plates reached as high as 3.89 MPa. More importantly, benefiting from the dynamic reversibility of the boron-oxygen bonds along with the hydrogen bonds interaction, ESO x -FPF can be welded with the assistance of solvents and recycled for multiple cycles. The outstanding healing efficiency and excellent reprocessability of these functional adhesives were confirmed by mechanical testing. Moreover, the as-prepared adhesives demonstrated universal and remarkable adhesion to various substrates, such as aromatic polyamide, aluminum plates and polycarbonate, meanwhile, they could be easily disassembled and recycled using ethanol without damaging the substrates surface. This study not only provides a simple strategy for the synthesis of eco-friendly adhesives with weldable and recyclable properties, but also sheds light on the development of other functional materials utilizing dynamic covalent chemistry.

Graphical In this study, imine-containing polybenzoxazine vitrimer (C-ABZ) was synthesized through a condensation reaction between an aldehyde-containing benzoxazine oligomer (O-ABZ) and 1,12-dodecanediamine. The dynamic exchangeable characteristics of imine bonds impart C-ABZ with weldabilities and reprocessabilities. At the same time, the hydrophobic polybenzoxazine backbone significantly improve the water resistance of imine bonds. Traditional polybenzoxazine thermosets cannot be reprocessed or recycled due to the permanent crosslinked networks. The dynamic exchangeable characteristics of imine bonds can impart the networks with reprocessabilities and recyclabilities. This study reported a weldable, reprocessable, and water-resistant polybenzoxazine vitrimer (C-ABZ) crosslinked by dynamic imine bonds. It was synthesized through a condensation reaction between an aldehyde-containing benzoxazine oligomer (O-ABZ) and 1,12-dodecanediamine. The resulting C-ABZ was able to be welded and reprocessed due to the dynamic exchange of imine bonds. The tensile strengths of the welded C-ABZ and the reprocessed C-ABZ after three cycles of hot-pressing were 76.7, 81.3, 70.8, and 58.1 Mpa, with corresponding tensile strength recovery ratios of 74.1 %, 78.6 %, 68.4 %, and 56.1 %, respectively. Furthermore, the polybenzoxazine backbone significantly improved the water resistance of the imine bonds. After immersing in water for 30 days at room temperature, the weight gain of C-ABZ was less than 1 % with corresponding tensile strength and tensile strength retention ratio of 59.5 Mpa and 57.5 %, respectively. Although the heat resistance of C-ABZ decreased slightly with increased hot-pressing cycles, a glass transition temperature ( T g, tanδ ) of 150 °C was retained after the third hot-pressing. Overall, these findings demonstrate that the C-ABZ possesses excellent comprehensive performances.

The demand for renewable fiber-based epoxy composites is increasing rapidly as a sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic composites. However, limited attention has been directed toward the degradation and reprocessing of the epoxy resin matrix, which could further enhance the environmental benefits of natural fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. This study utilized delignified basswood as a porous template to in situ synthesize epoxy vitrimers based on dynamic ester exchange reactions through vacuum impregnation, successfully preparing a Wood/Epoxy Vitrimers Composite (WEPVC). Unlike traditional wood–epoxy resin composites, WEPVC demonstrated thermally activated topological rearrangement behavior at 180 °C, achieving thermal welding repair and three cycles of mechanical crushing and hot-press reprocessing. In ethylene glycol solution, the material could be completely degraded within 240 min to recycle both the wood template and resin oligomers. The composite simultaneously exhibited excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength 73.21 MPa), thermal stability (degradation onset temperature 273 °C), and water resistance (water contact angle 82°). These combined properties make the WEPVC developed in this study an environmentally friendly, cost-effective candidate for sustainable structural materials.

Vegetable oil-based polyurethane (PU) vitrimer is of significance for sustainable industrial development; however, development of vegetable oil-based PU vitrimers with high mechanical properties and excellent malleability by a facile synthetic process remains a challenge. Herein, a series of versatile, self-healable, weldable, and recyclable castor oil-based poly(thiourethane-urethane) networks are constructed by one-pot reactions. Double bonds and hydroxy groups in castor oil can react with thiol in 2,2′-(1,4-phenylene)-bis[4-mercaptan-1,3,2-dioxaborolane] (BDB) and isocyanate in 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), respectively, as well as a reaction between the thiol of BDB and the isocyanate of MDI, which gives the castor oil-based poly(thiourethane-urethane) vitrimers. The obtained bio-based networks are characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) measurements. The castor oil-based vitrimers show high thermostability ( T 5d > 312°C) due to the incorporation of rigid BDB and MDI with benzene group in the networks. Meanwhile, the castor oil-based networks have been proved to possess more excellent functions in self-healing, welding, shape memory, and reprocessing capabilities at moderate temperatures due to the dynamic boronic ester bonds. This work would be beneficial to developing of versatile vegetable oil-based poly(thiourethane-urethane) materials through a facile approach.
