High Thermoelectric Performance and Flexibility in Rationally Treated PEDOT:PSS Fiber Bundles

Wu Ting,Shi Xiao-Lei,Liu Wei-Di,Li Meng,Yue Fang,Huang Pei,Liu Qingfeng,Chen Zhi-Gang

Organic thermoelectric fibers have great potential as wearable thermoelectric textiles because of their one-dimensional structure and high flexibility. However, the insufficient thermoelectric performance, high fabrication cost, and mechanical fragility of most organic thermoelectric fibers significantly limit their practical applications. Here, we employ a rapid and cost-effective wet-spinning method to prepare dimethyl sulfoxide-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) fiber bundles, followed by rational post-treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid (98% H 2 SO 4 ) to enhance their thermoelectric performance. The wearable fiber bundles composed of multiple individual PEDOT:PSS fibers have effectively reduced resistance and overall high tensile strength and stability. Rational treatment with H 2 SO 4 partially removes excessive PSS, thereby increasing the electrical conductivity to 4464 S cm ‒1 , while the parallel bundle is also a major factor in improving the power factor of up to 80.8 μW m ‒1  K ‒2 , which is super-competitive compared with those of currently published studies. Besides, the thermoelectric device based on these fiber bundles exhibits high flexibility and promising output power of 2.25 nW at a temperature difference of 25 K. Our work provides insights into the fabrication of all-organic flexible high-conductivity textiles with high thermoelectric properties. Graphical

Weiyi Zhang,Shuo Luan,Yuyan Fang,Linlin Zhu,Yang Yang,Mingwei Tian,Lijun Qu,Tingting Fan,Jinlei Miao

Wearable electronics have revolutionized human lifestyles by embedding intelligent functionalities into our daily accessories. However, realizing wearable systems that simultaneously with personal healthcare and thermal management remains a great challenge. Furthermore, to ensure the safety of wearable electronics that closely adherent on skin, intuitive temperature change visualization to prevent thermal runaway during long-term wear is also essentially required for effective thermal management. In this work, we developed a smart textile with personal healthcare and thermal management, via assembling carbon nanotubes interwoven MXene nanosheets into 3D interconnected network along textile template. The 1D carbon nanotubes synergistic 2D MXene nanosheets featuring the smart textiles with excellent durability and sensitivity over a wide strain range (∼100 %), enabling accurate monitoring of detailed human activities. Moreover, the 3D interconnected conductive network enables the smart textiles with excellent Joule heating effect and photothermal conversion effects, which could regulate the temperature rapidly under external electrical and light stimuli. While integrating thermochromic microcapsules on the conductive network induces more intelligent thermal management visualization, which endows the smart textiles response to external stimuli via direct dynamic color change. The dynamic reversible thermochromic camouflage smart textiles holds great promise for next-generation on-skin personalized healthcare and thermal management.

Chunqing Yang,Dongzhi Zhang,Weiwei Wang,Jun Wang,Yukun Liu,Lina Zhou,Yihong Guo,Jiahui Shao

In recent years, smart textiles and flexible wearable products have garnered significant attention in fields such as human-computer interaction, medical rehabilitation training, and motion monitoring. Flexible pressure sensors have attracted significant attention due to their excellent flexibility, stability, and multifunctional integration. Herein, a multifunctional wearable MXene/polydopamine (PDA)@cotton fabric pressure sensor was developed by modifying weft-knitted cotton fabric based on a dual hydrogen bond self-assembly strategy. The MXene/PDA@cotton fabric pressure sensor demonstrates wide linear detection range (0–146 kPa), high sensitivity (0.95 kPa–1), fast response/recovery times (16.434 and 11.952 ms), and outstanding stability after over 5000 cyclic tests. This sensor can achieve the monitoring of physiological parameters for human state detection, such as facial expression signals, abdominal respiratory signals, and joint bending signals. Furthermore, by integrating the MXene/PDA sensors into the interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints of a cotton glove, combined with intelligent algorithms and the human-computer interaction system, static gesture recognition and dynamic sign language translation were successfully realized based on the smart glove. This work demonstrates the potential application of flexible pressure sensors in intelligent human-computer interaction, providing new insights for developing next-generation sign language recognition systems.

Core-sheath nanofiber yarn for textile pressure sensor with high pressure sensitivity and spatial tactile acuity

Kun Qi,Hongbo Wang,Xiaolu You,Xuejiao Tao,Mengying Li,Yuman Zhou,Yimin Zhang,Jianxin He,Weili Shao,Shizhong Cui

Highly sensitive wearable textile pressure sensors represent the key components of smart textiles and personalized electronics, with potential applications in biomedical monitoring, electronic skin, and human-machine interfacing. Here, we present a simple and low-cost strategy to fabricate highly sensitive wearable textile pressure sensors for non-invasive human motion and physiological signal monitoring and the detection of dynamic tactile stimuli. The wearable textile sensor was woven using a one-dimensional (1D) weavable core-sheath nanofiber yarn, which was obtained by coating a Ni-coated cotton yarn electrode with carbon nanotube (CNT)-embedded polyurethane (PU) nanofibers using a simple electrospinning technique . In our design, the three-dimensional elastic porous nanofiber structure of the force-sensing layer and hierarchical fiber-bundled structure of the conductive Ni-coated electrode provide the sensor with a relatively large surface area, and a sufficient surface roughness and elasticity. This leads to rapid and sharp increases in the contact area under stimuli with low external pressure. As a result, the textile pressure sensor exhibits the advantages of a high sensitivity (16.52 N −1 ), wide sensing range (0.003–5 N), and short response time (~0.03 s). Owing to these merits, our textile-based sensor can be directly attached to the skin as usual and conformally fit the shape deformations of the body’s complex flexible curved surfaces. This contributes to the reliable real-time monitoring of human movements, ranging from subtle physiological signals to vigorous movements. Moreover, a large-area textile sensing matrix is successfully fabricated for tactile mapping of spatial pressure by being worn on the surface of wrist, highlighting the tremendous potential for applications in smart textiles and wearable electronics .

Double-Sided Bifunctional Blue-Green Light Photodetector Based on Liquid Crystalline Polymer for Light Positioning and Health Monitoring

Zhefeng Liu,Rui Wang,Jianing Han,Tianhao Chen,Zichao Deng,Yalan Sun,Yongbin Zhao,Aihua Chen

Wearable blue-green photodetectors have attracted considerable attention in underwater and medical applications. However, semiconductor-based photodetectors generally suffer from inevitable performance deterioration because of elastic modulus mismatch between rigid inorganic materials and polymer matrixes. Besides, most of the photodetectors reported so far can't be used on both sides and the multiple functionalizations can only be realized by stacking different types of devices. Herein, an intrinsically flexible and size-customizable blue-green photodetector has been fabricated based on well-designed composite fabrics with oriented electrospun fibers, consisting of pseudo-stilbene azobenzene-containing cross–linked liquid crystalline polymers (NAzo-CLCP) and piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] nanogenerator. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect between liquid crystalline alignment and polymer networks, the NAzo-CLCP devices construct a consecutive and efficient conversion of illuminance – internal stress – electric signal. A responsivity of 233 mV W −1 is achieved in voltage signals and a comparable response time of 0.1 s in current signals compared to the reported wearable semiconductor-based photodetectors. Benefiting from the inherent flexibility and compatibility of the hydrophobic fabrics, the NAzo-CLCP devices exhibit robust stabilities under cyclic irradiations, humidity and temperature variations, and especially slightly dynamic conditions, fulfilling basic requirements for wearable electronics. For practical applications, a photodetector array for light positioning based on blue light and a bracelet for real-time health monitoring based on green light are developed. Profiting from the uniformity of the fabrics and the consistency of detection performance, the integrated bifunction of code transmission and health monitoring over a double-sided one-piece photodetector has been realized for the first time, providing extensive potential for wearable electronics based on the NAzo-CLCP fabrics.

Core–shell nanowire architectures enable high-performance flexible thermoelectrics via energy filtering and phonon scattering

Qikuan Cheng,Haotian Sun,Zhaohan Yu,Guangjun Luo,Yuxi Qi,Yi Yuan,Beibei Huang,Yunming Wang,Huamin Zhou

Achieving high performance in flexible thermoelectric materials remains challenging due to the intrinsically conflicting requirements among electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity in conventional brittle inorganic thermoelectric materials. Here, we present a hierarchical triple-layer core–shell nanowire architecture based on Ag nanoparticle-decorated Ag 2 Te@Ag@PEDOT:PSS, designed to decouple electron and phonon transport via energy filtering and enhanced phonon scattering. The architecture integrates a conductive Ag 2 Te nanowire core, metallic Ag nanoparticle islands to facilitate carrier transport, and an external PEDOT:PSS shell that serves as an energy filter to suppress low-energy electrons. The hierarchical design achieves an ultralow room-temperature thermal conductivity of 0.407 W m -1 K -1 and a high power factor of 294.53 μW m -1 K −2 , resulting in a record-high ZT value of 0.22 at 300 K, outperforming comparable materials. The fabricated flexible thermoelectric generator (FTEG), when worn on the human body, produces an open-circuit voltage of 1.29 mV, under a temperature difference of 5.6 K between the skin and the environment confirming that the device itself cannot directly drive LEDs. After amplification by a low-power amplification circuit module, it is capable of powering four LEDs, demonstrating its promising potential for self-powered wearable electronics.

Self-healing Micro-Supercapacitor Based on Robust Liquid Metal-CNT-PEDOT:PSS Film for Wireless Powering of Integrated Strain Sensor

Yue Liang,Jian Gao,Qiang Wang,Nan Lu,Yong-Chao Zhang,Xiao-Dong Zhu

The limited energy density of micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) and challenges in their integration significantly impede the advancement of MSCs in wearable electronic devices. Here, this work designs a robust and wrinkled liquid metal-CNT-PEDOT:PSS film with high capacity and self-healing properties (defined as LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS). The wrinkled structure further enhances tensile properties of LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS and increases its active specific surface area per unit. Simultaneously, the incorporation of liquid metal (LM) enhances both the mechanical and healing properties of the LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS electrode. The flexible and self-healing MSC based on wrinkled LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS shows a remarkable specific capacitance of 114.29 mF cm −2 and a high areal energy density of 15.47 µW h cm −2 . Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of the healed MSC retained 90.01% of its initial performance, and the MSC unit can be arbitrarily integrated according to various energy and voltage requirements through the healing properties of LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS, widening the range of applications in next-generation microelectronic devices. The wrinkled LM-CNT-PEDOT:PSS film is utilized for the fabrication of a highly sensitive strain sensor. Simultaneously, the prepared sensor can be seamlessly integrated with wireless charging and MSC to facilitate convenient monitoring of physiological signals, thereby offering an effective solution for the advancement of wearable technology and self-powered systems.

Rapid-polymerization electrolyte architecture enabling high-voltage operation in flexible zinc-air batteries

Ge Wang,Yuxin Chi,Yijie Zhong,Hongyu Zhou,Mutao Lu,Hongjie Chen,Jing Zhang,Enlai Hu,Zhongwei Chen

Flexible zinc-air batteries have emerged as compelling candidates for next-generation wearable electronics owing to their exceptional theoretical energy density and inherent safety. However, persistent challenges including inefficient electrolyte membrane fabrication, suboptimal electrolyte-electrode interfacial adhesion, and limited operational voltages impede large-scale adoption. Herein, we demonstrate a room-temperature rapid-polymerization strategy for synthesizing poly(acrylamide-co-potassium acrylate) solid-state electrolyte membranes using alkali-activated potassium persulfate initiation, achieving full polymerization in 3 min. The membrane exhibits ultrahigh ionic conductivity (0.75 S cm −1 ) and enables flexible zinc-air batteries with a 1.2 V discharge plateau at 10 mA cm −2 and 4200-min cyclability at 1 mA cm −2 , advancing wearable electronics development. Innovative membrane design enables spatially decoupled acid-alkaline integration within a single matrix. Furthermore, the resultant flexible zinc-air batteries demonstrated a breakthrough open-circuit voltage of 2.16 V, representing the highest recorded value among reported flexible zinc-air battery systems. This study's rapid-polymerization membrane technology pioneers efficient solid electrolyte fabrication for zinc-air batteries, effectively resolving interface separation and low-voltage limitations while advancing novel approaches for stable acid-alkaline dual-electrolyte systems.

Piezoelectric and triboelectric synergies in MXene/BaTiO3/PAN composite nanofiber membranes for self-powered sensors

Tianchan Jia,Shengbin Cao,Xiaosong Liu,Lei Li,Kai Dong

Traditional power technologies are constrained by size and endurance, whereas nanogenerators offer lightweight, environmentally friendly, and sustainable energy solutions. In this study, an MXene/BaTiO3/PAN composite nanofiber membrane was developed using electrospinning technology. The incorporation of BaTiO3 nanoparticles and two-dimensional MXene flakes significantly enhanced the piezoelectric properties of the PAN matrix, resulting in an output voltage of 6.45 V and a current of 308 nA-approximately four times higher than that of pure PAN. Notably, piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) were integrated into one single device, addressing the low output and stability issues of traditional PENGs. The integrated device achieved a higher stable output voltage of 12–14 V and retained stable performance over 5000 cycles. Moreover, the MXene component endowed the nanofiber membrane with excellent photothermal properties, achieving a temperature rise of 42 °C under 1 W cm−2 solar irradiation. This demonstrates its potential for human joint photothermal therapy and underscores its value for developing high-performance self-powered sensors and wearable electronic devices.

A Skin-Like Transparent, Low-Hysteresis, and Highly Conductive Ionogel for Human Motion Monitoring and Deep-Learning Assisted Human-Machine Interface

Fu Fan,Lei Chen,Yihan Ma,Pengshuai Wang,Xiaoqian Dong,Feifeng Huang,Yuan Niu,Yu Zhou,Zhiwen Shu,Jianfei Xie,Bo Feng

Human skin functions not only as a barrier but also as a sensitive interface responding to environmental stimuli. Skin-attachable conductive materials are gaining increasingly attention in the field of on-skin electronics for applications in health monitoring and human-machine interfaces (HMIs). However, achieving both low modulus and low hysteresis in skin-attachable conductive materials remains challenging. Herein, a skin-like transparent, low-hysteresis, and highly conductive ionogel for human motion monitoring and deep-learning assisted human-machine interface is introduced. The ionogel demonstrates low modulus (5.08 kPa), superior transparency (>92% in the visible range), low hysteresis (<3%), super adhesive and outstanding conductivity (up to 0.86 S/m at 20 °C). The ionogel based sensors demonstrate outstanding sensing sensitivity for human motion monitoring and biopotential detecting. In addition, the ionogel can be integrated in an HMI for handwriting recognition. The 1D-ResNet algorithm is developed for handwriting recognition, achieving an accuracy of 98.13%. It is believe that the ionogels with both low modulus and low hysteresis have great potential for wearable electronics in healthcare monitoring and HMIs in the future.

High-performance wearable pressure sensors based on biocompatible 3D-printed PU sponges with MXene coating

Sung-Jun Lee,Eunwon Choi,Ji-Young Choi,Chang-Lae Kim

This study presents the development of piezoresistive pressure sensors based on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-coated polyurethane (PU) sponges fabricated using Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printing. Six different porous structures were designed by varying the line width (300 and 500 μm) and height width (100, 300, and 500 μm) to optimize the sensor performance. The 500 × 300 μm structure demonstrated an optimal balance between sensitivity and measurement range, achieving resistance change rates from −11.02 % at 25 Pa to −163.78 % at 2.25 kPa. DLP 3D printing allows precise control of pore geometry with dimensional accuracy within 50 μm, while eliminating the complex multistep fabrication processes associated with traditional template methods. The sensor exhibited excellent durability, with less than 1.5 % performance variation after 1000 compression cycles at both 1 and 2 kPa values. Environmental stability tests revealed minimal interference from humidity (30–90 % RH) and predictable temperature-dependent behavior (20–90 °C). Cytotoxicity assessments using RAW 264.7 macrophages confirmed biocompatibility, with cell viability exceeding 95 % for both MAX/MXene materials and PU/MXene composites. Practical demonstrations, including finger pressing, palm contact, and dynamic tapping, validated the capability of the sensor for human motion detection. The combination of DLP 3D printing precision and MXene conductivity enables the scalable production of customizable pressure sensors for wearable electronics, health monitoring, and human–machine interface applications.
