Temperature-Invariant Superelastic Multifunctional MXene Aerogels for High-Performance Photoresponsive Supercapacitors and Wearable Strain Sensors

Chenyang Cai,Zechang Wei,Leixin Deng,Yu Fu

Assembling MXene two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets solely into structurally robust three-dimensional (3D) multifunctional macroarchitectures with temperature-invariant elasticity is significant for widening their potential applications but has remained exceedingly challenging. To this end, a facile freeze-induced co-assembly was developed to allow the disparate integration of MXene 2D nanosheets into the directive heterogeneities to easily customize the controllable 3D architectures for geometry accessibility, structure integrity, and function adaptability. With functionalized cellulose nanocrystal serving as a structural modifier and cross-linking by polyurethane as well as manipulating the directionally ice templating process, multilevel nanostructured configurations with interconnected porous channels could be obtained for biomimetic aerogel electrodes across multiple length scales. Benefiting from the high ion pathway from the low-tortuosity topology, MXene aerogels showed outstanding electrochemical property (225 F/g), high-rate capacity, and temperature-invariant superelasticity (from 0 to 150 °C), which surpassed some of the best reported values. MXene quasi-solid-state supercapacitors presented superior electrochemistry (energy density: 38.5 μWh/cm2) and outstanding cycle ability (86.7% after 4000 cycles). Exhibiting excellent photoresponse capacity, they could be used as an integrated photodetector. More importantly, specially designed bio-mimicking structures with mechanically self-adaptive resilience could promote MXene 3D aerogels to apply in wearable electronic devices, monitoring various human motions. This work will shed light on MXene aerogels for smart and self-powered lightweight electronics.

Bionic Diffractive Meta-Silk Patch for Visually Flexible Wearables

Kaiyi Dong,Meng Wei,Qian Zhou,Bingfang He,Bingbing Gao

Rapid humidity response contributes tremendously to visually flexible wearables. However, sluggish response, infrequent reproducibility, and biotoxicity restrict the development of wearable humidity response devices. Here, inspired by the changes in the color of Dynastes hercules , a flexible wearable, rapid response, stretchable, rewritable meta-silk fibroin diffractive film (mSFD) is presented. The film is generated by spin-coating silk protein and polyurethane (PU) cross-linking, followed by hot pressing of meta-structures. Owing to the diffraction and stable combination of the SF β -structure and PU hydrogen bond, mSFDs exhibit excellent coloration, rapid response, and erasability. Notably, the microcolumns and microporous structures on the meta-membrane endow the membrane with unparalleled rapid response features. Fast color disappearance and reappearance are observed under high humidity conditions (response time <2 ms, cycle in 1 s). In particular, the rapid humidity responsiveness of mSFP induces a change in the color of the membrane, which enables its application in real-time biomonitoring (wound management, mask regulation) and anticounterfeiting (medicine storage, fingerprint recognition). These properties endow bioinspired mSFD P with high potential in the field of robotic skin.

Cotton modified with silver-nanowires/polydopamine for a wearable thermal management device

Ziya Yu,Yanfeng Gao,Xue Di,Hongjie Luo

Currently, indoor heating technology supports people's comfortable working and living conditions, but a large portion of energy is wasted on heating empty space. Target-selective heating can focus energy on specific objects, thus achieving high efficiency at a low cost. Here, we report a personal thermal management cloth that uses a coating of sliver nanowire (AgNW)/polydopamine nanocomposite; the cotton was modified with polydopamine to enhance the adhesive ability of AgNWs through intermolecular cross-linking. The AgNW/polydopamine cloth (ADNC) not only highly reflects middle-to-far infrared radiation from the human body (the average reflectance is up to 86%, approximately 66 times higher than normal cloth), but it also allows Joule heating with a quick thermal response (1 min, from 22 °C to 40 °C). Additionally, the AgNW/polydopamine cloth is durable and washable, making it suitable for a personal thermal management cloth.

3D-Printable gelatin-based organohydrogel for flexible wearable pressure sensors

Xinlong Liu,Xitong Shang,Xiaofeng Zhu,Longmeng Du,Qifan Yang,Liping Ren,Zaixing Jiang,Wenhui Zheng,Wei Li

Growing interest in conductive organohydrogels for wearable flexible strain sensors has significantly increased the demand for their stability and versatility. In this work, stable, and 3D-printed organohydrogels were prepared by utilizing the dynamic hydrogen bonding interaction between Gelatin and dl -Thioctic acid (TA), along with the Hofmeister effect between gelatin and ammonium sulfate. This double network structure endows the hydrogel with outstanding mechanical robustness, excellent low-temperature stability, and rapid gelation behavior suitable for 3D printing. After 200 compression loading-unloading cycles, the organohydrogel retained a remarkably high stress level, maintaining 96 % of its initial stress, and displayed a consistent electrical signal throughout each cycle. Furthermore, even after 7 days at room temperature, the organohydrogel preserved excellent stress (maintained at 92 %), electrical performance, and sensitivity in pressure signal recognition during extended cycle tests. The organohydrogel also supported 3D printing and was used to construct sensor arrays. Its excellent stability and versatility enhanced the potential applications in wearable pressure sensors.

“All-in-one” hydrolyzed keratin protein-modified polyacrylamide composite hydrogel transducer

Yang Gao,Song Gu,Fei Jia,Qian Wang,Guanghui Gao

Conductive hydrogels as wearable devices meet the basic demands of mechanical flexibility and smart sensing. However, achieving a combination of adequate skin adhesion, long-term stability and visible human-sensor interface are still challengeable. Here, a simple and effective strategy was proposed to fabricate “all-in-one” hydrolyzed keratin protein-modified polyacrylamide composite hydrogel transducer. Hydrolyzed keratin endowed hydrogel with lower modulus and ultra-stretchability to minimize wearing-related tension and discomfort. Specially, robust skin adhesion was obtained to achieve precise sensing without delamination. Impressively, the hydrogel had high transparency and exhibited wide-range temperature tolerance (−20 °C to 50 °C). Besides, the hydrogel with stable conductivity was extremely sensitive to pressure and strain at a wide range. As a result, the obtained transducer could not only detect human motion, respiratory mode and vocal-cord vibration, but also identify handwriting and facial expression. This work shed a new light on the design of next-generation skin-like electronic devices with applications in human-machine interface, ionic skin, artificial intelligence and healthcare monitoring.

Fabrication of a type of silk/PEDOT conductive fibers for wearable sensor

Yirong Wang,Xin Ai,Shenzhou Lu,Tieling Xing,Ning Qi,Guoqiang Chen

Flexible high-conductivity fibers have attracted much attention due to their great potential in the field of wearable electronic devices. However, how to ensure high conductivity and flexibility is still a challenge. In this paper, the flexible silk fibers were used as the substrate, and manganese oxides were generated on the surface by potassium permanganate treatment. On this basis, the flexible high conductivity silk fibers with a resistivity of 1.47 Ω·cm were prepared by in-situ chemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene(EDOT) on the surface of silk fibers. The surface morphology and chemical composition of silk fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP). The results confirmed that a large amount of MnO 2 was synthesized and deposited on the surface of the silk fibers. The flexible conductive silk prepared by this method had good temperature sensitivity (- 0.47%/K), good stability and repeatability under cyclic tension, and the relative resistance change rate was 9.1%. Meanwhile, due to the binding force between the surface-active groups of the silk fibers and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), the conductive silk fibers exhibited good stability against water washing, demonstrating a broad application prospects in the field of wearable sensors .

Facile and Low-Cost Fabrication of a Thread/Paper-Based Wearable System for Simultaneous Detection of Lactate and pH in Human Sweat

Xiao Gang,He Jing,Qiao Yan,Wang Feng,Xia Qingyou,Wang Xin,Yu Ling,Lu Zhisong,Li Chang-Ming

Wearable devices have received tremendous interests in human sweat analysis in the past few years. However, the widely used polymeric substrates and the layer-by-layer stacking structures greatly influence the cost-efficiency, conformability and breathability of the devices, further hindering their practical applications. Herein, we report a facile and low-cost strategy for the fabrication of a skin-friendly thread/paper-based wearable system consisting of a sweat reservoir and a multi-sensing component for simultaneous in situ analysis of sweat pH and lactate. In the system, hydrophilic silk thread serves as the micro-channel to guide the liquid flow. Filter papers were functionalized to prepare colorimetric sensors for lactate and pH. The smartphone-based quantitative analysis shows that the sensors are sensitive and reliable. Although pH may interfere the lactate detection, the pH detected simultaneously could be employed to correct the measured data for the achievement of a precise lactate level. After being integrated with a hydrophobic arm guard, the system was successfully used for the on-body measurement of pH and lactate in the sweats secreted from the volunteers. This low-cost, easy-to-fabricate, light-weight and flexible thread/paper-based microfluidic sensing device may hold great potentials as a wearable system in human sweat analysis and point-of-care diagnostics.

Flexible Electrospun Nanofibers for Tactile Sensing and Integrated System Research

Mei Yang,Wei Huang,Rongsheng Chen,Zhiling Ma

With the rapid development of wearable smart devices, medical care equipment, and human-machine application interfaces, the demand for flexible pressure sensors is progressively escalating. Among them, piezoelectric pressure sensors have been widely used due to their self-power supply capability, fast response speed, and relatively simple circuit. In this paper, we construct a multi-component flexible piezoelectric sensor PVDF/ZnO@MXene (PZM) based on electrospun PVDF and hydrothermal-assisted growth of ZnO nanorods and spin-coated multilayer MXene solution. This tactile sensor has high sensitivity (2.32 V N -1 ), ultra-low detection limit (0.01 N) and fast response time (46 ms). It detects subtle physiological signals like vocal cord vibrations and pulse beats, enabling perception and interaction with the external environment. ITZO TFT has the characteristics of high field effect mobility and low energy consumption, which can improve the effectiveness of sensor signal reading, processing and utilization. The integration of PZM with ITZO TFT into a sensor system can achieve signal amplification and ensure stable signal acquisition over 500 cycles, indicating its potential as a wearable electronic device for personalized identification, human-computer interaction, and soft robot manufacturing in the future.

Multifunctional wearable triboelectric nanogenerators prepared by combined crystallization and diffusion method: High-output, breathable, antimicrobial, and Janus-wettability for smart control and self-powered biosensing

Shanguo Zhang,Tianyi Jiang,Ming Li,Haoxiu Sun,Hao Wu,Wenlong Wu,Yu Li,Hongyuan Jiang

Wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (W-TENG) exhibit significant potential for applications in smart control systems and self-powered biosensing. Thus, developing a feasible, economical, and efficient method to prepare W-TENG with high output and practicality is essential. This paper proposes a strategy for preparing PVDF-based W-TENG using a combined crystallization and diffusion (CCD) method. Compared to electrostatic spinning, the CCD method can prepare multifunctional, high-output W-TENG in much less time. Its simple operation and minimal external factors make it highly cost-effective. Utilizing the CCD method, we developed a breathable, hydrophobic, skin-friendly, antimicrobial, and high-output W-TENG by combining Mxene/PVDF and silver nanoparticle-loaded MXene nanosheets/PVDF/cellulose acetate as the top and bottom layers, respectively. The mechanism of crystal growth and the change in crystal size were analyzed by finite element simulation. The W-TENG features a porous structure ranging from micrometers to nanometers, exhibits high negative electrical properties, and contains numerous capillary channels that facilitate moisture and heat transfer. The hydrophobic top surface and hydrophilic antimicrobial bottom surface allow the W-TENG to effectively absorb perspiration and maintain skin health, while also being self-cleaning. The W-TENG demonstrates an open-circuit voltage of approximately 1200 V (at 4 Hz) and a maximum peak power density of 18.55 W/m² at a load of 8 MΩ. Our W-TENG can remotely control trolley movements and enables real-time, self-powered monitoring of joint motion signals. This work introduces a previously unexplored strategy for preparing W-TENGs with significant practical implications.

Yukun Jin,Bo Wen,Zixiong Gu,Xiantao Jiang,Xiaolan Shu,Zhenping Zeng,Yupeng Zhang,Zhinan Guo,Yun Chen,Tingting Zheng,Yutao Yue,Han Zhang,Huijun Ding

Wearable sound detectors require strain sensors that are stretchable, sensitive, and capable of adhering conformably to the skin, and toward this end, 2D materials hold great promise. However, the vibration of vocal cords and muscle contraction are complex and changeable, which can compromise the sensing performance of devices. By combining deep learning and 2D MXenes, an MXene-based sound detector is prepared successfully with improved recognition and sensitive response to pressure and vibration, which facilitate the production of a high-recognition and resolution sound detector. By training and testing the deep learning network model with large amounts of data obtained by the MXene-based sound detector, the long vowels and short vowels of human pronunciation are successfully recognized. The proposed scheme accelerates the application of artificial throat devices in biomedical fields and opens up practical applications in voice control, motion monitoring, and many other fields.

Flexible wearable sensors based on lignin doped organohydrogels with multi-functionalities

Lei Jiang,Jia Liu,Shu He,An Liu,Jie Zhang,Haijun Xu,Wei Shao

The development of wearable devices promotes the multi-functional applications of conductive materials. Herein, highly stretchable PADL organohydrogels which consist of lignosulfonate nanoparticles (nano-LGS) doped poly(acrylic acid-co-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) in Glycerol/H 2 O were prepared by a facile strategy. The organohydrogels exhibited strong adhesiveness, high self-healing ability and conductivity. Benefiting from the use of Glycerol/H 2 O binary solvent system, the fabricated organohydrogels showed anti-freezing property at −40 °C. Notably, nano-LGS acted as the enhancement particles to improve the mechanical properties, antibacterial activity as well as conductivity of PADL organohydrogels. Furthermore, strain sensors constructed by the organohydrogels can monitor human movements with high sensitivity (gauge factor of 7.91). Besides, they can detect handwriting as well. Thus, this work could provide a promising strategy for the fabrication of the self-healing and conductive organohydrogels in the application of wearable electronic devices.

Mussel-Inspired Conductive Hydrogel with Self-Healing, Adhesive, and Antibacterial Properties for Wearable Monitoring

Xiaohui Zhang,Jingjing Wei,Shengchang Lu,He Xiao,Qingxian Miao,Min Zhang,Kai Liu,Lihui Chen,Liulian Huang,Hui Wu

Hydrogels with multifunctional properties have attracted considerable interest owing to their wide range of applications in soft robotics, wearable device development, and tissue engineering. In this study, an adhesive, self-healing, and antibacterial conductive poly(dopamine methacrylate-co-methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride-co-acrylic acid) (PDDA) hydrogel was prepared by the free-radical copolymerization of dopamine methacrylate (DMA), methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), and acrylic acid (AA). The adhesion property of the PDDA hydrogel was explored by regulating the feeding ratios of AA, DMA, and DMC. The hydrogel with a DMA/DMC/AA molar ratio of 1:4:40 exhibited strong adhesion to various materials such as iron, wood, rubber, glass, polytetrafluoroethylene, and plastic. Meanwhile, the hydrogel showed good antibacterial properties, which had a good inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli (37%) and Staphylococcus aureus (44%). In addition, because of its non-covalent bond interactions in the cross-linking network, the hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing property when damaged. Moreover, the excellent ductility, biocompatibility, and adhesion property of the hydrogel allow better adhesion to the skin surface and conductivity to monitor the physiological activities of the human body by means of the electrical signals recorded using the transformation of strain responses. The self-healing, adhesive, antibacterial, biocompatible, and conductive hydrogel has a wide range of applications in electronic skin and wearable devices.
