A self-lubricating hydrogel filament was achieved by establishing an in situ photocuring system and using camphorquinone/diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (CQ/DPI) as the blue-light photoinitiators, acrylamide (AM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) as the monomers, polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as the cross-linker, and lecithin as the lipid lubricant. The blue-light photopolymerization efficiency and the photorheological properties of the hydrogel precursor were investigated by photodifferential scanning calorimetry and a photorheological system. With the increase of DMAA, the photopolymerization efficiency of the precursor improved, while the elasticity of poly(DMAA/AM) decreased accordingly. The physical cross-linking effect between lecithin and the poly(DMAA/AM) network led to improved polymerization properties and elasticity. The lipid-based boundary layer at the hydrogel surface endowed the self-lubrication of the hydrogel filament. The extruded hydrogel filaments exhibited excellent mechanical properties and weavability, which were expected to play a realistic role in soft robots and bioengineering.

Atmospheric moisture exploitation is emerging as a promising alternative to relieve the shortage of freshwater and energy. Efforts to exploit hygroscopic materials featuring flexibility, programmability, and accessibility are crucial to portable and adaptable devices. However, current two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D)-based hygroscopic materials are difficult to adapt to diverse irregular surfaces and meet breathability, which severely hinders their wide applications in wearable and programmable devices. Herein, hygroscopic organogel fibers (HOGFs) were designed via a wet-spinning strategy. The achieved fibers were composed of the hydrophilic polymeric network, hygroscopic solvent, and photothermal/antibacterial Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), enabling hygroscopic capacity, photothermal conversion, and antibacterial. Owing to the good knittable feature, the HOGFs can be readily woven to adjusted 2D textiles to function as an efficient self-sustained solar evaporator of 4-layer woven HOGF device with a saturated moisture capacity of 1.63 kg m −2 and water-releasing rate of 1.46 kg m −2 h −1 . Furthermore, the 2D textile can be applied as a wearable dehumidification device to efficiently remove the evaporative moisture from human skin to maintain a comfortable environment. It can reduce the humidity from 90 to 33.4% within 12.5 min. In addition, the introduction of AgNPs can also endow the HOGFs with antibacterial features, demonstrating significant potential in personal healthcare.

The electrokinetic effect allows harvesting renewable energy directly from moisture, sweat, and rainwater, which is one of the promising techniques for self-powered electronics. However, current fibrous hygroelectric nanogenerators still suffer from either an intermittent energy harvesting mode or a limited electricity supply. Herein, learning from the transpiration process in plants, a conductive and hydrophilic cellulose/carbon nanotubes fiber is reported, in which continuous and efficient water flow can be driven by the macromolecular chain channel and spontaneous evaporation. In combination with the electrokinetic mechanism, just a single self-powered fiber is found to produce a constant and tremendous open-circuit voltage of 160.4 mV and a considerable power density up to 0.4 mW cm −3 . This record-high output performance with the feature of continuity and durability is about one order of magnitude higher than that of most conventional fibrous hygroelectric nanogenerators. Eventually, 108 fibers in series or parallel are woven into flexible fabrics, yielding the maximum power supply of 1.2 V with only 10 min charging time, capable of powering an electronic calculator. This work fabricates a knittable and designable self-powering fiber with excellent aesthetics and comfort for practical application, offering a novel concept and an effective approach toward clean energy usage.

A flexible and knittable symmetric all-solid-state fiber supercapacitor (ASSFS) was fabricated by using two polypyrrole (PPy) microcone arrays coated stainless steel yarns (SSY) as fiber electrodes and current collectors. The microcone arrays and interconnected network structure of PPy could increase transport path for ions/electrons and enlarge the real contact area between PPy and electrolyte, leading to superior specific capacitance. In addition, the fiber electrode has a high tensile strength of ∼1200 MPa and elongation at break is 12.5%. The outstanding mechanical performance of the fiber electrode is attributed to the high mechanical properties of the SSY and the protection of PPy coating. The resultant ASSFS exhibits maximum specific capacitance of 42.7 F/cm3, energy density of 3.8 mWh/cm3 and power density of 388 mW/cm3 (normalized to the whole device). The specific capacitance maintains 100% at different bending angles and 93.5% of its initial value after 1000 bending cycles. As a demonstration, a fabric and a bracelet knitted with five ASSFSs connected in series can light a LED.

The yarn-based sweat-activated battery (SAB) is a promising energy source for textile electronics due to its excellent skin compatibility, great weavability, and stable electric output. However, its power density is too low to support real-time monitoring and wireless data transmission. Here, we developed a scalable, high-performance sweat-based yarn biosupercapacitor (SYBSC) with two symmetrically aligned electrodes made by wrapping hydrophilic cotton fibers on polypyrrole/poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate)-modified stainless steel yarns. Once activated with artificial sweat, the SYBSC could offer a high areal capacitance of 343.1 mF cm −2 at 0.5 mA cm −2 . After 10,000 times of bending under continuous charge-discharge cycles and 25 cycles of machine washing , the device could retain the capacitance at rates of 68% and 73%, respectively. The SYBSCs were integrated with yarn-shaped SABs to produce hybrid self-charging power units. The hybrid units, pH sensing fibers, and a mini-analyzer were woven into a sweat-activated all-in-one sensing textile, in which the hybrid, self-charging units could power the analyzer for real-time data collection and wireless transmission. The all-in-one electronic textile could be successfully employed to real-time monitor the pH values of the volunteers’ sweat during exercise. This work can promote the development of self-charging electronic textiles for monitoring human healthcare and exercise intensity.

Fiber and textile electronics provide a focus for a new generation of wearable electronics due to their unique lightness and flexibility. However, fabricating knittable fibers from conductive materials with high tensile and transparent properties remains a challenge, especially for applicability in harsh environments. Here, we report a simple photopolymerization approach for the rapid preparation of a new type of a transparent conductive polymer fiber, poly(polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES)) fiber, which exhibits excellent stability at high/low temperature, in organic solvents, especially in dry environments, and overcomes the volatility and freezability of traditional gel materials. A poly(PDES) fiber possesses outstanding mechanical and sensing properties, including negligible hysteresis and creep, fast resilience after a long stretch (10 min), and signal stability during high-frequency cyclic stretching (1 Hz, 10 000 cycles). In addition, the poly(PDES) fibers are knitted into a plain-structured sensor on textile with breathability and high tolerance to damage, enabling stable and accurate monitoring of human stretching, bending, and rotation motions. Furthermore, its dry-cleaning resistance guarantees the feasibility of long-term monitoring, with the electrical signal remaining stable after five dry-cleaning cycles. These promising features of poly(PDES) fibers will promote potential applications in the fields of human movement monitoring, intelligent fibers, and soft robotics.

Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential biotemplate for disposing the burden of the uncontrollable accumulation of environmental contaminants disrupting the hydrophytic ecosystems. Herein, an efficient solar-driven catalyst was prepared using a natural three-dimensional (3D) porous lignocellulose-based Juncus effusus (JE) fiber for wastewater treatment. Owing to the exquisite 3D microstructure and abundant hydroxyl groups, the two-dimensional lamellar graphitic carbon nitride/graphene oxide (g-C3N4/GO) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized and decorated on the carboxymethylated JE fiber via the electrostatic self-assembly method. The as-prepared g-C3N4/GO-JE (CNG-JE) photocatalyst exhibits excellent light absorption efficiency and a superior ability to accelerate photogenerated electron migration. The outstanding adsorption performance toward pollutants also contributes to the photodegradation property of CNG-JE, showing highly efficient degradation of C.I. Reactive Red 120 (99.8%), C.I. Acid Yellow 11 (99.8%), methylene blue (99.4%), Cr(VI) (98.8%), and tetracycline (87.2%). Most importantly, the lignocellulose-based CNG-JE fibers could be fabricated into a photocatalyst textile due to their flexible and weavable properties. In actual application, the CNG-JE textile can be reused for at least five cycles under the sun, demonstrating that the flexible CNG-JE textile is practical and recyclable. This study may provide a platform for constructing efficient, flexible, and weavable biomass-based porous materials for cost-effective and sustainable catalytic applications.

SiO 2 aerogel fibers are widely regarded as one of the lightest solid materials, exhibiting exceptional thermal insulation properties. However, achieving both high elasticity and spinnability remains a significant challenge in the fabrication process. A scalable and efficient vortex-assisted multi-stage spinning strategy has been employed to fabricate Silica Nanofiber Aerogel Fibers@Polysiloxane/Aramid Aerogel Fibers (SiNAFs@PSO/Aramid). These fibers are characterized by a hierarchical architecture, consisting of an interwoven SiO₂ nanowire aerogel network as the core and a robust PSO/Aramid composite shell. SiNAFs@PSO/Aramid demonstrate ultralow density (<0.15 g/cm 3 ), exceptional mechanical resilience (tensile strength >4 MPa), and an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 0.033 W/m·K, outperforming conventional thermal insulation materials. Mechanical integrity remains stable under extreme thermal ranging from −196 °C to 500 °C, ensuring durability in harsh environments. Superior weaveability enables the fabrication of highly adaptable, three-dimensional foldable textiles with tunable geometric configurations. Upon exposure to high temperatures, an in-situ transformation into SiOC ceramic composites occurs, significantly enhancing thermal shock resistance and mechanical stability. Flexibility and geometric adaptability of these aerogel fabrics make SiNAFs@PSO/Aramid well-suited for applications requiring diverse shape configurations, as well as high-temperature thermal insulation.

Hydrogel fibers with excellent mechanical properties are requested for biomedical applications, especially for flexible and wearable devices. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate hydrogel fibers with both enough strength and high water content. Herein, we prepare cellulose nanocrystal/polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposite hydrogels by rapid covalent crosslinking and the subsequent strong hydrogen bonding interaction derived from tannic acid. The multi-crosslinked skeletal structure endows the hydrogels with excellent tensile strengths as well as high water content, compared to the polyvinyl alcohol-glycidylmethacrylate hydrogels. Notably, P10C5T15 hydrogel can lift loads to 4.375 kg, which is approximately 2353 times its weight. Subsequently, the flexible and mechanically stable hydrogel fibers are fabricated with a tensile strength of 7.3 MPa and a breaking elongation of 123.8 %. Furthermore, the fabricated hydrogel fibers can be easily knitted into various complex geometries or integral textiles, suggesting their great potential for woven smart devices.
