Editable shape-memory transparent wood based on epoxy-based dynamic covalent polymer with excellent optical and thermal management for smart building materials

Wang Kaili,Liu Xiaorong,Dong Youming,Ling Zhe,Cai Yahui,Tian Dan,Fang Zhen,Li Jianzhang

Transparent wood (TW) with excellent optical and thermal management performance has been recently developed as a promising energy-efficient building material. Here, editable shape-memory TW (ESMTW) is developed through in situ polymerization of epoxy-based dynamic covalent polymers (EDCP) into a delignified wood scaffold. ESMTW possesses stiffness at low temperature and flexibility at high temperatures, while it exhibits excellent solid-state plasticity and shape-manipulation capability under thermal stimuli. Meanwhile, ESMTW shows unique light guiding and directional scattering effects, and the transmitted light intensity distribution is tunable owing to the shape-management capability. Additionally, the resultant TW possesses great thermal insulation properties. The combination of characteristics enables TW to exhibit great promise as an advanced functional and intelligent building material toward a sustainable society, especially for three-dimensional applications ( e.g. , curved or irregularly shaped glass, windows, ceilings, rooftops.). It may also provide new ideas for fabricating transparent and shape-editable optical/electronic devices. Graphical abstract

Mass-Producible 3D Hair Structure-Editable Silk-Based Electronic Skin for Multiscenario Signal Monitoring and Emergency Alarming System

Dan Ge,Qingling Mi,Ruixin Gong,Shenghong Li,Congcong Qin,Yanjuan Dong,Hou-Yong Yu,Kam Chiu Tam

Structurally tunable electronic skin (e-skin) is beneficial for advancing wearable electronics, prosthetics, and human-machine interaction (HMI). However, the regulation of e-skin by traditional nanostructure technology is complex and expensive, moreover, the nanostructure's poor deformability leads to small detection range and low sensitivity. Herein, inspired by the structure of skin-hair and insect burr, a polypyrrole-silk/glycerol plasticized silk fibroin (P-silk/RG) e-skin fabricated by a simple 3D biomimetic structural strategy is reported. Benefitting from the editability (length, position) of this structure, P-silk/RG has a signal selectivity, long-cilia P-silk/RG demonstrates high sensitivity (respond to weak signal-airflow), while the short-cilia P-silk/RG exhibits wide pressure detection range (0.5–200 g) and high cycle stability (8000 compressions). Therefore, different forms of P-silk/RG are used in different scenarios (long-cilia for monitoring breathing and coughing for motion detection and disease diagnosis, short-cilia for pressure-sensitive Morse code). Besides, P-silk/RG exhibits good waterproof, editable conductive points and easy device integration, providing the basis for underwater information transmission, multibit coded command output, and early warning for emergency sports accidents and sedentary. Surprisingly, combining this structure with textile weaving can be mass-produced. Obviously, this 3D biomimetic structure strategy endows e-skin with editability and improved scene adaptability to provide a favorable way for mass production.

Assembly of Reusable DNA Blocks for Data Storage Using the Principle of Movable Type Printing

Chengtao Xu,Biao Ma,Xing Dong,Lanjie Lei,Qing Hao,Chao Zhao,Hong Liu

Due to its high coding density and longevity, DNA is a compelling data storage alternative. However, current DNA data storage systems rely on the de novo synthesis of enormous DNA molecules, resulting in low data editability, high synthesis costs, and restrictions on further applications. Here, we demonstrate the programmable assembly of reusable DNA blocks for versatile data storage using the ancient movable type printing principle. Digital data are first encoded into nucleotide sequences in DNA hairpins, which are then synthesized and immobilized on solid beads as modular DNA blocks. Using DNA polymerase-catalyzed primer exchange reaction, data can be continuously replicated from hairpins on DNA blocks and attached to a primer in tandem to produce new information. The assembly of DNA blocks is highly programmable, producing various data by reusing a finite number of DNA blocks and reducing synthesis costs (∼1718 versus 3000 to 30,000 US$ per megabyte using conventional methods). We demonstrate the flexible assembly of texts, images, and random numbers using DNA blocks and the integration with DNA logic circuits to manipulate data synthesis. This work suggests a flexible paradigm by recombining already synthesized DNA to build cost-effective and intelligent DNA data storage systems.
