Healable, recyclable, and adhesive rubber composites equipped with ester linkages, zinc ionic bonds, and hydrogen bonds

Li Yang,Mingliang Wu,Xueli Yang,Baofeng Lin,Lihua Fu,Chuanhui Xu

This study reports healable, recyclable, and adhesive rubber composites equipped with ester linkages, Zn 2+ ionic bonds , and H-bonds based on carboxylic styrene butadiene rubber (XSBR), nano-ZnO, and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Zn 2+ ionic cross-links are introduced into XSBR networks through the acid-base reaction between nano-ZnO and carboxyl groups of XSBR. The in-situ generated Zn 2+ is thus evenly dispersed in the rubber matrix to serve as transesterification catalyst, which promotes the healing and reprocessing of the rubber composites at a higher temperature. The healing efficiency of the rubber composites can realize 75% and further improved to 90% after introducing additional hydroxyl groups. The rubber composites can reprocess at least 5 times. Moreover, the rubber composites are easily disintegrated to recycle neat XSBR due to the dissociation of ester linkages in the alkaline solution. Interestingly, the rubber composites show a surprising reversible adhesion property under water stimulation.

A healable, recyclable and thermochromic epoxy resin for thermally responsive smart windows

Qi-Sheng Huang,Pei-Chen Zhao,Jian-Cheng Lai,Xiao-Peng Zhang,Cheng-Hui Li

Traditional thermoset polymers such as epoxy resin have strong mechanical strength but are difficult to recycle, reshape and reprocess after being cured. When these materials are damaged, they can only be scrapped, resulting in a waste of resources. Introducing dynamic interactions into thermoset polymers can endow them with recyclable, reshapable and self-healing properties, thus prolonging their lifetime. In this work, we demonstrate that epoxy resin modified by coordination bonds between Ni2+ ions and imidazole/hydroxyl groups can show high mechanical strength (Young's modulus ranges from 210.4 ± 15.7 MPa to 564.7 ± 9.6 MPa) as well as thermoreversible behaviors (can be healed, reshaped and recovered at 80 °C and 0.1 MPa). More interestingly, due to the structural transformation of the Ni2+ coordination complex between the four-coordinated geometry and the six-coordinated geometry upon changing the temperature, this material shows reversible thermochromic behavior. Therefore, it has potential applications in the field of thermochromic smart windows.

A Healable Quasi-Solid Polymer Electrolyte with Balanced Toughness and Ionic Conductivity

Li Ding,Yu Tan,Guiliang Li,Kaiqiang Zhang,Xu Wang

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have garnered extensive attention as potential alternatives to traditional liquid electrolytes, primarily due to their prowess in curbing lithium dendrite formation and preventing electrolyte leaks. The quest for SPEs that are both mechanically robust and exhibit superior ionic conductivity has been vigorous. However, achieving a harmonious balance between these two attributes remains a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel quasi-solid electrolyte, ingeniously crafted from a poly(urethane-urea) network, enriched with lithium salts and plasticizers. This innovative composition not only boasts remarkable toughness but also ensures commendable ionic conductivity. Our post-gelation method yields gel polymer electrolytes that undergo rigorous evaluation, leading to an optimized version that stands out with its exceptional room-temperature ionic conductivity (2.94 × 10-4 S cm-1) and outstanding toughness (11.9 MJ m-3). Moreover, it demonstrates a broad electrochemical window (4.73 V), remarkable stability across a 600-hour cycle test, a high capacity retention exceeding 80% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, and a noteworthy self-healing capability. This quasi-solid polymer electrolyte emerges as a promising contender to replace current liquid electrolyte solutions.

A Bio-based healable/renewable polyurethane elastomer derived from L-Tyrosine/Vanillin/Dimer acid

Bowen Xu,Qichen Yin,Feilong Han,Jue Cheng,Jingbo Zhao,Junying Zhang

Bio-based, healable, and recyclable polyurethane materials conform to the sustainability of the polyurethane industry. By introducing dynamic covalent bonds, the cross-linked polyurethane can obtain the performance of network rearrangement, thereby realizing self-healing and reprocessing. In this work, a self-healing/renewable polyurethane based on bio-based vanillin and tyrosine was successfully synthesized solvent-freely and catalysts-freely. Due to two different thermal reversible mechanisms, metathesis of imines and deblocking/re-blocking of phenolic urethanes, the obtained PU has considerable self-healing efficiency and renewability. At 120 °C, the surface scratches almost completely disappear within 90 min, and the tensile strength can be restored to ∼ 95% within 2 h. After remolded for 5 times, the chemical structure, glass transition temperature, deblocking behavior, tensile strength, elongation at break and gel content didn’t change significantly. Both the environmental friendliness of bio-based raw materials and the renewability of the obtained polyurethane materials meet the requirements of sustainability.

Tough and Fast Light-Controlled Healable Lignin-Containing Polyurethane Elastomers

Haixu Wang,Jianhua Huang,Weifeng Liu,Jinhao Huang,Dongjie Yang,Xueqing Qiu,Jiaren Zhang

In this work, tough and fast light-controlled healable lignin-containing polyurethane elastomers (LPUes) with a dynamic dual-crosslinking network were successfully synthesized. The network consisted of dynamic noncovalent bonds (hydrogen bonds and Zn2+-based coordination bonds) and dynamic carbamate bonds, which endowed LPUes with excellent mechanical properties (31.4 MPa, 1528%), reprocessability, and healing properties. After 4 times of reprocessing, the retention ratios of tensile strength and elongation at break for LPUes maintained above 85 and 95%, respectively. The incorporation of Zn2+-based coordination bonds significantly enhanced the photothermal conversion capability of LPUes, with the maximum surface temperature reaching above 160 °C in 2 min under the near-infrared (NIR) illumination of 1.2 W/cm2. The prepared LPUes exhibited rapid and outstanding light-controlled healing performance with 98% healing efficiency of mechanical properties under 10 min of NIR irradiation. This work demonstrated the novel application of biomass lignin in recyclable and light-driven smart polyurethane elastomers with good mechanical properties.
