A facile method to fabricate tough hydrogel with ultra-wide adjustable stiffness, stress, and fast recoverability

Shuangfei Xiang,Ting Li,Weifu Dong,Qinghua Lu

In this article, we report a synergistic strategy to develop dual physically cross-linked tough hydrogels via one-pot bulk copolymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, acrylic acid, and stearyl methylacrylate (SMA) without any adscititious surfactant. Due to synergic effects of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic association, the resulted dual physically cross-linked hydrogels (DP Gel) with ultra-wide range adjustable Young's modulus (0.08–45.6 MPa), tensile stress (0.7–6.9 MPa), and toughness (3.3–23.1 MJ m −3 ). Stretching to 300%, DP Gel exhibited fast recoverability that remained ~95% of initial dissipated energy after resting in 60 °C for 3 min. Finally, scanning electron microscopy revealed that the microstructure of hydrogel changed from phase separation structure to micro phase separation as SMA added, which accounted for excellent performance of DP Gel. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Magnetic-field induced shape memory hydrogels for deformable actuators

Ye Tian,Zhirui Xu,Hao Qi,Xiaojun Lu,Ting Jiang,Liqian Wang,Guang Zhang,Rui Xiao,Huaping Wu

Magnetic hydrogel actuators exhibit promising applications in the fields of soft robotics, bioactuators, and flexible sensors owing to their inherent advantages such as remote control capability, untethered deformation and motion control, as well as easily manipulable behavior. However, it is still a challenge for magnetic hydrogels to achieve adjustable stiffness and shape fixation under magnetic field actuation deformation. Herein, a simple and effective approach is proposed for the design of magnetic shape memory hydrogels to accomplish this objective. The magnetic shape memory hydrogels, consisting of methacrylamide, methacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol and Fe3O4 magnetic particles, which crosslinked by hydrogen bonds, are facilely prepared via one-pot polymerization. The dynamic nature of noncovalent bonds offers the magnetic hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties, precisely controlled stiffness, and effective shape fixation. The presence of Fe3O4 particles renders the hydrogels soft when subjected to an alternating current field, facilitating their deformation under the influence of an actuation magnetic field. After the elimination of the alternating current magnetic field, the hydrogels stiffen and attain a fixed actuated shape in the absence of any external magnetic field. Moreover, this remarkable magnetic shape memory hydrogel is effectively employed as an underwater soft gripper for lifting heavy objects. This work provides a novel strategy for fabricating magnetic hydrogels with non-contact reversible actuation deformation, tunable stiffness and shape locking.

Heterogeneous Architecture Light-Responsive Stiffness-Tunable Magnetic Actuator

Chao Wu,Jiawei Li,Qiankun Zhang,Hongjun Kang,Zhimin Xie,Zhongjun Cheng,Qiang Tao,Dongjie Zhang,Yuyan Liu

Actuators play important roles in various fields due to their high intelligence. However, the present actuators are hard to achieve high load capacity and easy and fast deformation simultaneously. Here, a novel heterostructure magnetic composite material is proposed, which can work as a matrix to create various actuators by easily tailored and magnetized. Initially, a UV-responsive stiffness-tunable polymer (URST-polymer) is developed using in situ encapsulation of reactive double bonds, achieving a modulus increase of up to 15 600 times after stiffening. By introducing NdFeB@PDA particles into URST-polymer, the heterostructure matrix is created through a one-step curing process, which features dual-functional layers: the layer with NdFeB@PDA particles ensures excellent magnetic actuation properties, while the pure polymer layer guarantees effective UV-induced stiffening. Consequently, the light-responsive stiffness-tunable magnetic actuator (LRST-MA) made by a heterostructure matrix demonstrates rapid actuation, bistable states, and high stiffness. The URST layer also imparts excellent shape memory properties due to a special polymer network. Combining those advantages with structural and magnetization design, the matrix can be used in applications such as multi-morphic actuators, variable stiffness grippers, deployable antennas, and emergency robots, which provide a simple and effective strategy for designing actuators.

Smart Table Tennis Racket with Tunable Stiffness for Diverse Play Styles and Unconventional Technique Training

Xuefeng Zhou,Lijuan Wang,Dongyang Huang,Yudai Liang,Quan Shi,Hong Yaying,Mengying Zhang,Huayan Pu,Weijia Wen,Jinbo Wu

Smart technologies bring innovation to the life and sports arena. To adapt to diverse play styles and improve unconventional technique of table tennis players, a smart table tennis racket with tunable stiffness based on anisotropic electrorheological elastomers (EREs) is developed. The EREs are prepared in the designed mold under the electric field to form an anisotropic structure that consisted of electrorheological particles and facilitated the generation of interparticle saturation surface polarization and the local electric field. Therefore, the electrorheological property of anisotropic EREs is significantly promoted, attaining a relative electrorheological effect of 17 160% in shear mode, and the incremental shear storage and compression modulus of 5.2 and 6.4 MPa. By applying an electric field, the smart racket successfully changes the trajectory of balls, reduced ejection angle by 11% and increased ejection velocity by 2%.

Electrorheological elastomer for simultaneous enhancements in durability and micro-vibration suppression

Sai Chen,Leizhi Wang,Ke Zhang,Wen Bai,Yao Li

Electrorheological elastomers (EREs) with tunable stiffness and damping properties have emerged as advanced smart soft materials. In this study, we propose a novel hybrid EREs, which incorporates TiO2 anchored on hollow carbon spheres (TiO2/HCs), aimed at enhancing tunable stiffness and exceptional durability. The precursor of the EREs exhibits a reduction in zero-field viscosity attributed to the inclusion of nano-TiO2, which presents considerable advantages in the manufacturing process of EREs. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis reveals that the prepared EREs possess favorable electro-viscoelastic properties and remarkable energy dissipation capabilities. Experimental results from quasi-static compression experiments and stress relaxation tests indicate that the isotropic EREs exhibits a significant electro-induced modulus increase from 1.26 MPa to 1.51 MPa. We have designed an effective micro-vibration suppression prototype by integrating the TiO2/HCs ERE with theoretical analysis. This prototype demonstrates a substantial reduction in transmission amplitudes across a frequency range of 20 Hz to 54 Hz, achieving a maximum micro-vibration isolation efficiency of 37.2%.

Characteristic analysis of a novel magnetorheological fabric composite cored flexible sandwich beam with tunable stiffness

Pingyang Li,Xiaomin Dong,Zhenyang Fei,Qinglin Liu

This paper focuses on the performance improvement and evaluation of a novel flexible sandwich beam incorporated magnetorheological fluid porous fabric (MRF-PF). As a novel MR material, MRF-PF has been introduced, prepared, and measured to analyze the pre-yield property between complex shear modulus and magnetic fields. MRF-PF is used into the flexible sandwich beam as core layer. Pre-yield property with tunable stiffness is used to adjust the dynamic response. Then, a theoretical model is derived which can precisely describe the performance. Based on experimental results, sandwich beam incorporated MRF-PF has a good performance of controllability. When the magnetic field is applied into the free end, the natural frequency decreases with increasing the currents and filling ratio. In contrast, the frequency and amplitude increase when the clamped end is exposed to the magnetic fields. Comparing with other investigations, this proposed sandwich beam incorporated MRF-PF has a larger frequency range. The first and second natural frequency show the increases of 54.8% and 77.2%, respectively. The reduction of amplitude is closely related to the thickness of face plate. Therefore, the performance of the compound sandwich beam can be significantly improved by MRF-PF.

Fabrication of versatile polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogels for information hiding and flexible sensors: Heat-induced adjustable stiffness and transparency

Yuanna Sun,Fenling Shi,Ruobing Tian,Xiaoliang Zhao,Qingshan Li,Chen Song,Ying Du,Xinhai He,Jun Fu

With the growing demand for wearable electronics, designing biocompatible hydrogels that combine self-repairability, wide operating temperature and precise sensing ability offers a promising scheme. Herein, by interpenetrating naturally derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel matrix, a novel hydrogel is successfully developed via simple coordination with calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ). The chelation of CMC and Ca 2+ is applied as a second crosslinking mechanism to stabilize the hydrogel at relatively high temperature (95 °C). In particular, it has unique heat-induced healing behavior and unexpected tunable stiffness & transparency. Like the sea cucumber, the gel can transform between a stiffened state and a relaxed state (nearly 23 times modulated stiffness from 453 to 20 kPa) which originates from the reconstruction of the crystallites. The adjustable transparency enables the hydrogel to become an excellent information hiding material. Due to the presence of Ca 2+ , the hydrogels show favorable conductivity, anti-freezing and long-term stability. Based on the advantages, a self-powered sensor, where chemical energy is converted to electrical energy, is assembled for human motion detection. The low-cost, environmentally friendly strategy, at the same time, complies to the “green” chemistry concept with the full employment of the biopolymers . Therefore, the proposed hydrogel is deemed to find potential use in wearable sensors.

An Easy-to-Fabricate Hydrogel Platform with Tunable Stiffness and Cell Anchorage: Validation of Its Feasibility in Modulating Sonic Hedgehog Signaling Pathway Physically

Tingting Yu,Ke Hu,Qiufan Xu,Xueqin Xu,Chunyue Du,Yinyi Zhao,Sen Yan,Wei Wang,Shijia Tang,Shen Yue,Xiya Zhang,Danlei Wang,Feimin Zhang,Steven Yan Cheng,Ning Gu

The biophysical factors of microenvironments have increasingly been recognized as playing key roles in driving cell functions along with biochemical cues. However, current synthetic extracellular matrix materials with tunable biophysical properties are both costly and technically complicated to prepare, therefore limiting their application in the molecular biology field. Herein, an interpenetration hydrogel group with gradient stiffness and cell anchor points is developed, and the matrix stiffness and adhesion property functions as key regulators to determine the final output of Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) signaling is reported. Specifically, it is shown that the spreading areas of mouse embryonic fibroblasts are mainly regulated by stiffness of the matrix. The Shh-induced Gli1 expression also increases with the cell spreading area. Finally, this work shows that b1-integrin and focal adhesion kinase, respectively, act as sensors of matrix stiffness and adhesion properties, demonstrating the significance of the precise regulation of Shh signaling by cellular microenvironments. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using this hydrogel platform to study the impact of biophysical changes of the microenvironment on particular cellular signal pathways, and can potentially be applied in low-cost, high throughput screening of signal pathways which are responsive to the biophysical changes of microenvironments.

Hydrogel platform with tunable stiffness based on magnetic nanoparticles cross-linked GelMA for cartilage regeneration and its intrinsic biomechanism

Chenchen Zhou,Chunli Wang,Kang Xu,Zhixing Niu,Shujuan Zou,Demao Zhang,Zhiyong Qian,Jinfeng Liao,Jing Xie

Cartilage injury affects numerous individuals, but the efficient repair of damaged cartilage is still a problem in clinic. Hydrogel is a potent scaffold candidate for tissue regeneration, but it remains a big challenge to improve its mechanical property and figure out the interaction of chondrocytes and stiffness. Herein, a novel hybrid hydrogel with tunable stiffness was fabricated based on methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) and iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 2 O 3 ) through chemical bonding. The stiffness of Fe 2 O 3 /GelMA hybrid hydrogel was controlled by adjusting the concentration of magnetic nanoparticles. The hydrogel platform with tunable stiffness modulated its cellular properties including cell morphology, microfilaments and Young's modulus of chondrocytes. Interestingly, Fe 2 O 3 /GelMA hybrid hydrogel promoted oxidative phosphorylation of mitochondria and facilitated catabolism of lipids in chondrocytes. As a result, more ATP and metabolic materials generated for cellular physiological activities and organelle component replacements in hybrid hydrogel group compared to pure GelMA hydrogel. Furthermore, implantation of Fe 2 O 3 /GelMA hybrid hydrogel in the cartilage defect rat model verified its remodeling potential. This study provides a deep understanding of the bio-mechanism of Fe 2 O 3 /GelMA hybrid hydrogel interaction with chondrocytes and indicates the hydrogel platform for further application in tissue engineering.
