Fabrication and mechanism of microspheres with tunable and control-released hydrophobicity in a wide-range: Ultra-low-density proppant
The tunable and control-released hydrophobicity of ultra-low-density proppants (ULDPs) is crucial for their migration, distribution and oil conductivity in hydraulic fracturing technology. To develop this kind of smart ULDPs, a novel functional monomer (PI-KH570) was designed and synthesized as an organic silane by copolymerization of isoprene and KH570, which will take part in copolymerization with styrene and divinyl benzene in a suspension polymerization. Surface wettability of the resulted microspheres (named as SFR-SDB) was studied according to contact angles, which can change from neutral (approximately 89°) to hydrophobicity (∼119°) in a wide time range of 1 ∼ 12 h by designing the chain structure of the PI-KH570, and even to super-hydrophobicity (∼155°) in 0 ∼ 60 min by further designing and adding others organic silane as tuning agents. Mainly based on results from electrical conductivity changes, TEM and SEM images, the wide-range tunable and control-released hydrophobicity of the SFR-SDB comes from controllable sol–gel reaction rate of the PI-KH570. Furthermore, the SFR-SDB exhibited ultra-low apparent density of approximately 1.017 g/cm 3 but high compressive strength, which show a low crushing ratio of ∼1.97 % at a closure pressure of 69 MPa.
