Development of fuel electrodes for reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs) is important for achieving good performance and stability under both solid oxide fuel cell and electrolysis cell operation modes. In this work, CeO2-decorated La0.43Ca0.37Ti0.94Ni0.06O3−δ (denoted as LCTN-Ce) fuel electrodes were prepared via a simple hydrothermal route, where CeO2 is uniformly decorated onto the external surface of the LCTN-Ce electrode with in situ exsolved Ni nanoparticles (NPs) after reduction treatment. The decorated CeO2 content can be regulated by adjusting the hydrothermal treatment time and precursor solution concentration. As the decorated CeO2 content increases from 0.81 to 2.05%, the conductivity of the LCTN-Ce electrode decreases while the oxygen vacancy concentration increases, comprehensively affecting the cell power output and CO2 electrolysis activity. The electrolyte-supported cell assembled with LCTN-1.46Ce cell with a moderate CeO2 content of 1.46% shows an excellent reversible electrochemical performance and RSOC stability in 50% H2/50% CO2 at 750 °C. The hydrothermal decoration provides a facile way to modify perovskite oxides, and the LCTN-Ce with in situ exsolved Ni NPs and surface-decorated CeO2 is proved to be a potential RSOC fuel electrode material.

The electrochemical performance of Ca 3 Co 4 O 9+δ (CCO) oxygen electrode with La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ (LSF) interlayer in YSZ-based reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs) was investigated in present work. Results proved that CCO oxygen electrode with LSF interlayer had a superior stability under alternating anodic and cathodic polarization . Both the polarization resistance and overpotential of the CCO electrode with LSF interlayer were significantly reduced compared to that with Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 1.95 (GDC) interlayer, which confirmed the improvement of the redox reactivity of the oxygen electrode. The maximum power density of Ni-YSZ/YSZ/LSF/CCO fuel cell was 1276 mW cm −2 at 800 °C. An electrolysis current density of 1695 mA cm −2 was achieved at 1.5 V and 50% H 2 O. The hydrogen production rate of the electrolysis cell improved by 2 times than that with the GDC interlayer. Results made clear reliability of LSF as an interlayer in YSZ-based RSOCs.

The catalytic activity and thermomechanical stability of electrode materials are crucial for the efficient operation of reversible solid oxide cell (rSOC). However, these two traits often impose limitations on one another. In this work, a unique quintuple perovskite Sm 2 Ba 3 Co 2 Fe 3 O 15-δ (SBCF-5L), comprising of A-site ordered double perovskite layers and disordered simple perovskite layers, is reported as a high-performance air electrode material for rSOC. The designed SBCF-5L material exhibits a highly symmetrical tetragonal structure (pseudo-cubic) with an isotropic thermal expansion and a limited chemical expansion. The formation barriers for oxygen vacancies are comparable between A-site ordered layers and disordered simple perovskite layers, resulting in a high concentration of oxygen vacancies and 3D-like bulk mobility of oxygen ions. Perpendicularly twinned nanodomains are developed in the particles, providing more active sites for surface electrode reaction. When applied in electrolyte-supported cells, the SBCF-5L electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with low polarization resistance of 0.017 Ω cm −2 , high power density of 1.01 W cm −2 and high electrolysis current density of 1.08 A cm −2 at 1.3 V at 800 °C in fuel cell and electrolysis modes, respectively. This study introduces a new approach of atomic-scale engineering to rationally design a new generation of air electrodes for rSOC.

Reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs) have attracted considerable interest due to their efficient energy conversion. However, the low catalytic activity of air electrodes limits the application of RSOCs. Bi 0.5 Sr 0.5 Fe 0.9 Ta 0.1 O 3-δ developed in our previous work exhibits a comparatively desirable performance and is expected to be further optimized. Herein, a novel strategy of anionic F and cationic Ta co-doped Bi 0.5 Sr 0.5 Fe 0.9 Ta 0.1 O 3-δ-x F x (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, denoted as, BSFTF0, BSFTF5, BSFTF10, BSFTF15) materials are obtained to enhance the oxygen transport property of Bi 0.5 Sr 0.5 FeO 3-δ for RSOCs. The polarization resistance (Rp) of BSFTF10 (0.017 Ω cm 2 ) decreases by 66 % compared with that of BSFTF0 (0.051 Ω cm 2 ) at 800 °C. In fuel cell mode, the single cell with BSTF10 reaches the maximum power density of 908 mW cm −2 , which is approximately 72 % higher than the only Ta-doped BSFTF0 (527 mW cm −2 ) at 800 °C. In electrolysis mode, the single cell with BSFTF10 exhibits a high electrolysis current density of 1679 mA cm −2 , indicating an approximately 90 % increase compared to that of BSFTF0 at 800 °C and 1.5 V with 70 % CO 2 -30 % CO feed gas. The bulk chemical diffusion (D chem ) of BSFTF10 is up to 5.12 × 10 −4 cm 2 s −1 , which is 4.3 times higher than that of BSFTF0. The superior oxygen transport property of BSFTF10 is attributed to the high electronegativity of F − (4.0) and low electronegativity of Ta 5+ (1.8), which may weaken the chemical bonding between B-site ions and O 2− , generating more oxygen vacancies and accelerating the rate of oxygen transfer. The results indicate that F and Ta co-doping is an effective strategy to develop a highly catalytically active air electrode for RSOCs featuring oxygen transport properties.

Ni 1-x Cd x O-SDC composite materials are prepared and investigated as the hydrogen electrodes for reversible solid oxide cell (RSOC). XRD, SEM, XPS and Raman techniques have been used to characterize structural properties, textural and mobility of adsorbed oxygen and lattice oxygen. After reduction, Cd is incorporated into the lattice of Ni and formed Ni Cd alloy. The reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC possesses the most oxygen vacancies , resulting in the highest catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxidation of H 2 and the electrolysis of H 2 O. The electrochemical oxidation process of H 2 on the hydrogen electrode in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) mode is investigated with a symmetric cell under various H 2 partial pressures. The surface diffusion of adsorbed H atom on the reduced Ni 1-x Cd x O-SDC composite hydrogen electrodes is the rate-determining step (RDS) for H 2 electrochemical oxidation reaction and the reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC shows the highest electrochemical oxidation rates. The maximum power densities ( P max ) of the cells with reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC as hydrogen electrode is 796.2 mW cm −2 when using H 2 as the fuel at 700 °C. Furthermore, in solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) mode, the cell with reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC as hydrogen electrode exhibits the best electrolysis performance under various H 2 O concentrations and the current densities remain stable during the test at different voltages for a total period of 10 h under 47%H 2 O + 53%H 2 O atmosphere at 700 °C.

High-entropy LnBaCo 2 O 5+ δ perovskites are explored as rSOC air electrodes, though high configuration entropy ( S config ) alone poorly correlates with performance due to multifactorial interactions. We systematically engineer LnBaCo 2 O 5+ δ perovskites (Ln = lanthanides) with tunable S config and 20 consistent parameters, employing Bayesian-optimized symbolic regression to decode activity descriptors. The model identifies synergistic contributions from S config , ionic radius, and electronegativity, enabling screening of 177,100 compositions. Three validated oxides exhibit superior activity/durability, particularly (Pr 0.05 La 0.4 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.1 Y 0.25 )BaCo 2 O 5+ δ , showing enhanced oxygen vacancy concentration and disordered transport pathways. First-principles studies reveal optimized charge transfer kinetics via cobalt-oxygen bond modulation. Further, the interplay between first ionization energy, atomic mass, and ionic Lewis acidity dictates stability. This data-driven approach establishes a quantitative framework bridging entropy engineering and catalytic functionality in complex oxides.

Reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs) using identical material as both fuel electrode and air electrode have received extensive attentions due to their simplified fabrication process, increased compatibility between electrolyte and electrode. In this work, Molybdenum doped La 0.5 Sr 0.5 Fe 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 3-δ (LSFMo) symmetric electrode based on RSOCs is firstly designed and synthesized via sol-gel method. The effect of Molybdenum substitution at Fe-site on crystal structure, chemical stability, conductivity and electrochemical performance of La 0.5 Sr 0.5 FeO 3-δ oxide is thoroughly investigated. The structural stability of La 0.5 Sr 0.5 FeO 3-δ (LSF) in reducing condition is significantly enhanced after the incorporation of Mo 5+/6+ and the conductivity in 5% H 2 for LSFMo is ~7 times higher than that of undoped LSF. In addition, the polarization resistance value at 850 °C based on LSFMo/LSGM/LSFMo is 0.08 and 0.09 Ω cm 2 in air and wet H 2 , respectively. At 850 °C and 20%H 2 O–H 2 , a peak power density of 640 mW cm −2 is obtained in fuel cell mode, while a current density of −1000 mA cm −2 is attained at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode. Finally, the symmetric cell exhibits an excellent cycling reversible operation in both SOFCs mode and SOECs mode without detectable degradation.

In-situ exsolution technique, as an efficient and controllable strategy of surface modification, has been extensively applied in reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs). Here, we demonstrate La x Sr x Ti 0.9 Ni 0.1 O 3-δ fiber decorated by exsolved Ni nanoparticles and highlight the impacts of A-site deficiency on Ni exsolution and electrochemical performance of RSOCs. The La 0.4 Sr 0.4 Ti 0.9 Ni 0.1 O 3 (A/B = 0.8) fibrous fuel electrode decorated by Ni nanoparticles with moderate Ni exsolution displays optimum electrochemical performance at 800 °C, achieving ∼540 mW cm −2 in SOFC mode and −0.742/0.385 A cm −2 under 1.3/0.7 V in RSOC mode. In contrast, high A-site deficiency (A/B < 0.8) allows heterogeneous phases (NiTiO 3 ) and excessive Ni exsolution along with alterations of fibrous morphology, leading to slow gas diffusion, sluggish catalysis, and Ni agglomeration. The distribution of relaxation time (DRT) results show that the rate-limiting steps in symmetrical cells are gas diffusion, hydrogen adsorption, and dissociation, accounting for over 89% of the total R P . Ni-equilibrium model based on X-ray Rietveld refinement calculates the degree of exsolution with various A-site deficiency, revealing NiTiO 3 is the key factor of excessive exsolution. Our work of high A-site deficiency exemplified here may serve in the design and nanoengineering of fibrous ABO 3 perovskite oxides for RSOCs.

B-site double perovskite Sr 2 FeMo 0.6 Mg 0.25 Ga 0.15 O 6−δ (SFMMG) is reported as a promising fuel electrode for reversible solid oxide cell. The SFMMG material shows excellent structural stability in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, possesses an appropriate thermal expansion coefficient , as well as excellent redox cycle stability. The result confirms that the Mg 2+ and Ga 3+ tend to occupy the B-site while some Fe ions moves to the B′-site, creating lots of Fe B – O –Fe B’ anti-site defects in the lattice. As a result, a high electrical conductivity value of 36.0 S cm −1 is obtained at 800 °C in H 2 . Besides, the SFMMG electrode exhibits good catalytic activity toward hydrogen oxidation/evolution reaction, as confirmed by the low polarization resistance of 0.237 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C in H 2 . With SFMMG as the fuel electrode, the La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3-δ (300 μm)-supported single cell exhibits a peak power density of 1073 mW cm −2 in fuel cell mode and an electrolysis current density of 1192 mA cm −2 in electrolysis cell mode at 900 °C. In addition, the single cell shows stable performance during 100 h operation under 0.75 V at 800 °C.

To promote the electrocatalytic activity and stability of traditional La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3– δ (LSCF) oxygen electrodes in reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs), conventional physical mixed method was used to prepare the Pd-LSCF composite oxygen electrode. The cell with Pd-LSCF|GDC|YSZ|Ni-YSZ configuration shows perfect electrochemical performance in both solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) mode and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) mode. In the SOFC mode, the cell achieves a power density of 1.73 W/cm 2 at 800 °C, higher than that of the LSCF oxygen electrode with 1.38 W/cm 2 . In the SOEC mode, the current density at 1.5 V is 1.67 A/cm 2 at 800 °C under 50 vol% steam concentration. Moreover, the reversibility and stability of the RSOCs were tested during 192 h long-term reversible operation. The degradation rate of the cell is only 2.2%/100 h and 2.5%/100 h in the SOEC and the SOFC modes, respectively. These results confirm that compositing Pd with the LSCF oxygen electrode can considerably boost the electrochemical performance of LSCF electrode in RSOCs field.

ZnO is a semiconductor with a reactive surface due to the presence of oxygen vacancies, but its application in solid oxide electrochemical cells (SOCs) was limited by its low electronic conductivity. Aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO), an n -type transparent conductive oxide, is explored for the reversible SOCs. Interestingly, 2 at. % of alumina doping in zinc oxide (AZO-2) increased the electric conductivity of ZnO to 1 Scm −1 at 800 °C. The K chem (5.98 x 10 −8 cm s −1 ) of AZO-2 from electric conductivity relaxation is 91% higher than that of ZnO. AZO-2 electrode on Y 0.16 Zr 0.84 O 1.92 (8YSZ) electrolyte exhibits a polarization resistance ( R p ) of 0.73 Ω cm 2 at open-circuit voltage and 800 °C, and the reaction is limited by the surface exchange of oxygen species. The surface exchange current density of AZO-2 cathode on Y 0.16 Zr 0.84 O 1.92 is 0.0736 A cm -2 at 800 °C. AZO-2 electrode can be activated after 20 cycles of switching bias, and the R p is further decreases to 0.26 Ω cm 2 . This study confirms that AZO with an enhanced electric conductivity can be used for the oxygen electrode of a reversible SOC due to the fast surface oxygen exchange over the defective surface with couple Zn 2+ and O 2− vacancies.

Summary As a promising technology to address the energy storage challenge, reversible solid oxide cell (RSOC) plays a vital role in conversion between chemical energy and electrical power. Over the last several decades, developing high performance fuel electrodes suitable for reversible operation have attracted extensive attentions. This work develops La 0.1 Sr 0.85 Ti 0.35 Fe 0.6 Ni 0.05 O 3− δ which is an A-site deficient design with B-site having additional 5% nickel as the fuel electrode through in-situ metal exsolution. The in-situ exsolution process results in FeNi 3 alloy particles, about 40 nm in size, while maintaining the perovskite structure of the parent oxide. The FeNi 3 nanoparticles greatly improve the electrochemical performance as RSOC fuel electrode such as reducing the interfacial polarization resistance at 800°C by 13.6%, increasing the peak power density by 19% in the fuel cell mode and increasing the current density by 30% in the electrolysis mode. Furthermore, RSOC operation is demonstrated by 20-cycle reverse tests that are conducted by switching between the fuel cell and electrolysis modes. The stable RSOC performance indicates that La 0.1 Sr 0.85 Ti 0.35 Fe 0.6 Ni 0.05 O 3− δ with in-situ constructed FeNi 3 nanoparticles is a potential fuel electrode material for RSOC.
