pH-responsive smart materials with switchable wettability have a great potential application in bidirectional oil-water separation. In this work, a simple, low-cost and environmentally friendly strategy is developed to construct a pH-responsive melamine sponge (MS) with reversible wettability via polydopamine (PDA) modification followed by grafting long-chain alkanes with carboxyl (–COOH) and methyl (–CH 3 ) groups. The as-modified sponge exhibits unique pH-responsiveness, that is, the water contact angle (WCA) is measured to be 144.9° under acidic and neutral environments, while the wettability is radically changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic under alkaline conditions. Moreover, in alkaline environment, the pH-responsive sponge can rapidly release the absorbed oil, demonstrating a controllable desorption performance. Also, the prepared sponge is utilized to accomplish controllable separation of various oil/water mixtures, as well as to effectively separate oil-in-water emulsions. Furthermore, after 50 cycles, the oil-water separation efficiency was still higher than 92 %. This smart wettability sponge has an extensive application prospect in controlled oil-water separation and on-demand oil-spill remediation.

Intelligent responsive materials with switchable wettability surfaces are of great importance in the field of oil/water separation. Here, a distinctive pH-responsive bio-based oil/water separation material was prepared. A low-cost titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and environmentally friendly chitosan (CS) were used to combine with stearic acid (SA) to form the superhydrophobic TiO 2 @SA/CS coating. The coated materials (cotton fabric, sponge and filter paper) can be converted from superhydrophobicity to superhydrophilicity under ammonia treatment, and the superhydrophobicity can be restored again after heating treatment. The stimuli-responsive surface of the material was applied for the separation of oil/water/oil ternary mixtures and for the effective separation of various surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions and oil-in-water emulsions before and after wettability conversion. These results may provide a new prospect for the development of intelligent responsive oil/water separation materials with controllable wettability.

Developing superwetting coatings with environmental adaptability is critical for sustainable industrial applications. However, traditional anti-wetting coatings often fall short due to their susceptibility to environmental factors (UV light, temperature, mold growth, and abrasion) and inadequate stain resistance in complex media. Herein, a durable ex situ pH-responsive coating with reversible wettability switching, engineered by integrating hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane and tertiary amine structures is presented. The resulting hierarchical micro-nano surface structure, combined with a trapped air cushion, ensures low water adhesion and stable superhydrophobicity. Notably, after ex situ pH treatment, the modulation of surface N + content synergistically interacts with polydimethylsiloxane chains, enabling a controlled transition in surface wettability from 150° to 68.5°, which can spontaneously revert to a hydrophobic state upon heating and drying. This transition enhances stain resistance in both air and underwater environments, resulting in a 17.2% increase in detergency compared to superhydrophobic controls. Moreover, the coating demonstrates remarkable durability, with no staining, peeling, or mildew growth (grade 0) even after 1500 h of UV radiation and 28 days of mildew resistance testing. This work offers a highly adaptable and stain-resistant coating for applications in building and infrastructure protection, as well as in smart textiles designed for multi-media decontamination.

Superwettability materials have focused considerable interest of researchers due to their extensive applications like oil/water separation. Currently, the development of materials with controllable wettability for efficient on-demand oil/water separation is highly desired. In this work, we constructed caterpillar-like cobalt-nickel hydroxide/carbon cloth hierarchical architecture via in situ hydrothermal growth. Interestingly, this hierarchical architecture shows reversible wettability after immersing in stearic acid ethanol solution and tetrahydrofuran, which can be used for efficient on-demand oil/water separation. This hierarchical architecture is proved to have excellent environmental and mechanical durability. Moreover, the fluid-based gating and liquid-infusion-interface mechanism are presented to explain oil/water separation process. The caterpillar-like cobalt-nickel hydroxide/carbon cloth with low cost and simple preparation shows a promising prospect in the application of efficient on-demand oil/water separation.

Super-wettable membranes have been extensively investigated due to their prospective applications in oily wastewater remediation. However, it is still a big challenge to develop super-wettable membranes via a facile and rationally designed method. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy to develop wetting-induced superlyophobic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes with reversible wettability via in situ cross-linking polymerization and surface immobilization of nanoparticles during phase inversion process. The resulting membranes exhibited super-amphilic property in air, and were capable of converting their wetting behavior from underwater superoleophobicity to underoil superhydrophobicity with excellent dynamic stability. The membranes also displayed outstanding separation capability toward various surfactant-stabilized emulsions with separation efficiencies exceeding 99.2% under gravity. Moreover, the membranes could be regenerated with high performance preserved using a facile rinsing-and-drying method, and could be repeatedly applied to separate surfactant-stabilized emulsions. This work has made progress in the fabrication of super-amphiphilic membranes with superior separating performance through a facile method, providing great potential in practical application for oily wastewater treatment .

Removal of organic solvents and heavy metals in effluents is of great significance to environmental pollution control and ecological civilization construction. pH-responsive materials have unique advantages in treating complicated oily wastewater. In this work, an intelligent pH-responsive nonwoven fabric with excellent reversible wettability was prepared. The pH-sensitive polymer was synthesized by free radical polymerization (FRP) technique, then dipped with SiO 2 on PP fabric. The particular molecular structure of poly (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) enabled the fabric surface to switch wettability rapidly between hydrophilic/underwater oleophobic and oleophobic/hydrophobic under pH stimulus and exhibit controllable selective separation of various oil/water mixtures. Furthermore, the fabric removed Pb 2+ efficiently under a wide pH range. The experimetal results showed that the separation flux reached 19,229 ± 1656.43 L-h −1 -m −2 for water and 19,342 ± 1796.77 L-m −2 -h −1 for n-hexane. Besides, the obtained fabric effectively realized the separation and collection process of complex ternary mixtures. The fabric removed Pb 2+ in solutions with efficiency up to 90.83%. After immersing in acid and alkali solutions for 24 h, no significant damage to the surface wettability. This economical and intelligent fabric is able to meet the different separation purposes of industrial wastewaters with complex compositions.

Superhydrophobic cellulose-based products show tremendous potential applications in both industries and researches owing to their inherent biodegradability, non-toxicity, and cost-effectiveness. However, previous studies mainly focused on superhydrophobic cellulose bulk materials rather than universal cellulose powder. Though some methods have been proposed for preparing superhydrophobic cellulose powder, their fabricating processes involve plenty of high-toxic organic solvents . In this work, we proposed a facile one-step solvent-free method to prepare superhydrophobic cellulose powder. The modified cellulose powder shows not only superhydrophobicity but also reversible wettability . Moreover, the superhydrophobic cellulose shows immense UV resistance by enduring 60 h UV radiation. The superhydrophobic cellulose powder-coated cotton fabric could separate oil/water mixture with high efficiency and reusability. This work provides a green method to produce superhydrophobic cellulose powder which can be used as a raw material for sophisticated multifunctional material fabrication in future.

Shape memory polymer (SMP) surfaces can achieve wettability transition by controlling microstructure have attracted great attention. However, attempts at achieving in situ reversible switching capability remain largely challenging. This paper aims to elaborate on the preparation of a shape memory superhydrophobic surface with switchable wettability and electrothermal performance. The surface microstructure array is regulated by the shape memory effect based on the electrothermal response, and the reversible switching of the wetting state is realized under the action of voltage and external force. Different microstructural morphologies exhibit different solid-liquid contact states, as well as large/small contact angles and low/high adhesion. In addition, the rapid thermal response, excellent thermal conductivity , and satisfactory durability provide the possibility for anti-icing/deicing. The structure can prevent droplet aggregation, greatly delay the nucleation of droplet crystallization, and remove ice by Joule heat. In short, this work successfully realized the in-situ control of surface wettability which also provided a significant application potential in droplet manipulation, droplet writing, anti-icing/deicing, and other fields.

Two novel pH-responsive reversible-wettability biomass cellulose-based materials of cellulose -g- PAA and cellulose -g- PAM were conveniently prepared by grafting acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM), respectively, onto eucalyptus pulp cellulose. The hydrophobic–oleophilic of cellulose -g- PAA and the oleophobic–hydrophilic of cellulose -g- PAM were converted to oleophobic–hydrophilic and hydrophobic–oleophilic, respectively, as the pH converted from 1 to 9. The pH-responsive mechanism of these cellulose-based materials was investigated by 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy analyses. The resulting cellulose -g- PAA and cellulose -g- PAM papers were applied in the switchable separation of oil/water mixtures. Water passed through the cellulose -g- PAA paper at pH = 9 and cellulose -g- PAM paper at pH = 1, while oil was retained. After changing the pH value, oil permeated these papers, but water did not. The papers exhibited excellent regeneration performances; the oil adsorbed on the papers was completely desorbed via pH control.

Oil/water separation constitutes a significant global challenge owing to the challenges in selectively isolating either water or oil from mixtures encountered in practical settings. To overcome this obstacle, photo-responsive materials capable of reversible wettability shifts have been utilized for oil/water mixture separation, capitalizing on their wetting behavior. In this work, we employ spray-coating to engineer smart surfaces that transition reversibly between hydrophilic and hydrophobic states upon UV/vis irradiation. The resultant modified polyester (PES) mesh, functionalized with a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating, ZnO-tetrapod (ZnO-T), and 4,4′-diaminoazobenzene (DAAB), displays a porcupinefish-like surface morphology. This architecture confers upon the mesh a significantly reversible photo-responsive wettability, coupled with improved resilience against mechanical damage. The water contact angle measures approximately 140.0° under visible light and decreases to approximately 10.0° upon exposure to 365 nm UV light. The engineered PES surface achieves photo-responsive removal of oil or water from oil/water mixtures ("oil-removing" and "water-removing"). In addition, the porcupinefish-like topology of the modified PES imbues it with significant resistance to repeated mechanical deformation and damage, suggesting suitability for diverse real-world applications.

Inspired by rose petals, a novel and facile method to prepare smart surface with controllable wettability for transfer and patterned storage of droplets was presented. The smart surface was obtained by alternately depositing PDDA and PSS on a copper substrate with mastoid structure prepared by laser processing. It was found that the wettability of the as-prepared copper surface can switch reversibly between superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic state. In addition, the as-prepared surface had excellent physical and chemical stability. In theory, our droplet storage platform can be processed into any size and shape to achieve different requirements for droplet storage. This study provides a simple route to fabricate bioinspired rewritable platform with reversibly switchable wettability for lossless transfer and patterned storage of droplets. It may be helpful for the development of the devices for droplet transfer and functionalized droplet storage. This method can also be applied to biodetection, microfluidic switching, and chemical microreaction.

Vigorous advocacy for the promising strategy on biodiesel replacing petrodiesel can effectively alleviate the dual pressure of energy deficiency and environmental pollution . Nevertheless, the difficulty of lowering larger mass transfer resistance between two-phases of alcohol/oil is a stumbling block in the biodiesel production . Furthermore, the high catalytic efficiency of the most commonly used solid bases for biodiesel production is weakened due to the saponification reaction caused by fatty acids in feedstock. Addressing these two issues has emerged as a pressing concern for achieving efficient biodiesel production. Herein, a polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF) with light-driven intelligent reversible and switchable wettability , i.e. , PANF-NH 2 @RAFT@SPA&[AD][OH] featuring Brønsted-Lewis di-base sites and photoresponsiveness, was successfully fabricated through reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer strategy. Physicochemical properties of the resulting fibers were characterized by FT-IR, XRD , NMR, TGA , SEM , TEM, XPS , WCA, and UV–Vis. The effect of methanol-to-oil molar ratio , reaction temperature, reaction time and catalyst feed on biodiesel production was also investigated. Under optimal conditions, a maximum soybean oil conversion of 100% was achieved with a corresponding biodiesel yield of 98.97%, which is an exceptional and unprecedented result. These impressive results can be ascribed to the microenvironment facilitated by the novel intelligent amphiphilic PANF, which effectively enhances mass transfer in a biphasic medium phase of methanol/oil. The microenvironment could be rapidly changed via Vis-regulating PANF hydrophobicity , followed by observably promoting catalyst recovery and phase separation between resultant biodiesel and excess methanol. This catalyst shows no obvious changes in terms of the catalytic activity and selectivity after successive reuses of up to 10 cycles. The economic feasibility and negligible environmental impact of this methodology, coupled with its expediency and efficacy for conducting experiments at kilogram-scale quantities, render it highly compatible with large-scale industrial production of biodiesel.
