Natural soft materials can generate a reversible transition between soft and tough states triggered by environmental stimuli. Inspired by this, various synthetic hydrogels with dynamic reversible crosslinks are developed. In this study, a weak coordination-induced dynamic crosslinked hydrogel is successfully synthesized. High concentrations of Ca2+ ions are coordinated with acrylamide, which then catalyze ammonium persulfate decomposition for rapid polymerization to a polyacrylamide (PAAm)/Ca hydrogel at room temperature. The preassembled coordination provides sufficient crosslinks, accompanied by enhanced hydrogen bonding during dehydration, which together endows the gel with high mechanical properties. This weak coordinated crosslinked structure is affected by humidity, leading to a wide range of mechanical properties of the gel, with the tensile strength ranging from 44.2 kPa to 5.6 MPa, elastic modulus from 17.3 kPa to 2.2 MPa, and toughness from 312.3 kJ/m3 to 7.8 MJ/m3. Additionally, Ca2+ ions preferentially coordinate with amides in the hydration process, and the gel exhibits an abnormal hydration phenomenon under low humidity. The gel with high polymer content has a higher water loss ratio and volume shrinkage. On this basis, we design an asymmetric bilayer structure gel and realize the curling and stretching of leaves and petals. Interestingly, the bilayer gel exhibits reversible adhesion properties and the tearing energy is up to 3985.9 J/m2 under low humidity. This principle may provide ideas and inspiration for producing hydrogels with adjustable mechanical strength and develop a route to construct versatile stimulus-responsive materials.

Biological structures with reversible adhesion can be widely observed in nature. The current biomimetic adhesion system has attracted extensive interest yet remains the fundamental challenge in the reversible high-adhesion with good environment compatibility, especially underwater. Herein, inspired with octopus, we propose the hydrogel-based suckers with favorable mechanical performance achieved readily by digital light processing 3D printing of the Zr 4+ -coordinated hydrogels, leading to the excellent underwater adaptation due to the water permeability. In this case, hydrogel, as the typical soft material infilled with water, can effectively enhance the adhesion and stability by the interfacial water sealing in comparison with the traditional hydrophobic and dry materials. The optimized hydrogel sucker with the radius of 5 mm, inclination of 30°, and wall thickness of 1 mm exhibits the highest adhesive strength of 48.46 ± 3.93 kPa in air, and 57.19 ± 1.93 kPa under water by experimental and numerical demonstration. The hydrogel suckers also display good adhesion versatility to different materials, including metal, ceramic, plastic and tissue etc. Finally, a pneumatic hydrogel gripper integrated with the bioinspired suckers can efficiently capture objects under water and in air. This research provides a novel path to develop the intelligent adhesion systems and mobile devices/robots.

Establishing the adhesion between soft yet wet materials remains challenging due to the interfacial water, the dilution of polymer strands, and the lubrication of the interface. Herein, nanohesives based on the grape seed protein and tannic acid (GSP-TANHs) were reported to adhere various hydrogels (including polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, poly 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane-sulfonic acid, and chitosan) with each other. Due to the rapid formation of widely available short-range forces between nanoparticles and hydrogel surfaces, GSP-TANHs could establish the initial adhesion around 10 s. Additionally, they served as universal hesives to a wide range of substrates without chemical modifications or pretreatments for adherents, such as plastics, cardboard, glass, iron, and rubber. The adhesion force for cardboard reached 11.37 N. Meanwhile, the adhesion force could be easily regulated by varying nanoparticle sizes and specific surface area. Thanks to the sensitivity of hydrogen bonding to heating, on-demand debonding was realized after increasing the temperature to 45 °C. Because of the reversible interactions, the adhesion was also repeatable. Due to the merits of grape seed protein and plant polyphenol, it could be completely biodegraded within 7 days. Bearing several merits, this strategy has promising applications in new implantable devices, E-skin, and biofabrication processes.

Reversible adhesion is highly desired for intelligent engineering, reassembling devices, and recycling resources. However, many reported reversible adhesives require solvent or pH stimuli to achieve adversity switches, which are very inconvenient for practical applications. So far, thermally responsive adhesives are reported to be very appealing in achieving facile reversible adhesion. However, the fixed on–off switching temperature limits their application in different scenarios. Herein, we report employing fatty acids and polyvinylpyrrolidone to construct supramolecular thermosetting adhesives. The adhesives can switch between solid and liquid states owing to phase transition, resulting in reversible adhesion with a robust strength of ∼4 MPa and a large on–off ratio of ∼40. Upon variation of the chain length of fatty acids, the super fatty acid adhesives can be designed to display reversible adhesion at the desired temperature. This study will open up new inspiration for developing high-performance reversible adhesives for sustainable development.

A quaternized chitosan (QCS)@poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) hydrogel adhesive was prepared by in-situ ultraviolet (UV)-induced copolymerization of 1-vinyl-3-butyl imidazolium bromide ([BVIm][Br]) and methacryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride (DMC) in QCS aqueous solution without using any crosslinkers, which was stably crosslinked by reversible hydrogen bonding together with ion association and exhibited excellent adhesion, plasticity, conductivity and recyclability properties. Moreover, its thermal/pH-responsive behaviors and intermolecular interaction mechanism of thermal-triggered reversible adhesion were discovered, meanwhile good biocompatibility, antibacterial properties, repeated stickiness and degradability were also proved. The results showed that the newly developed hydrogel could make various tissues, organic, inorganic or metal materials adhered tightly within 1 min; after 10 binding-peeling cycles, the adhesive strength to glass, plastic, aluminum and porcine skin still remained beyond 96 %, 98 %, 92 % and 71 % of the original, respectively. The adhesion mechanism involves ion dipole interaction, electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, coordination, cation-π interaction, H-bonding and van der Waals force. For above merits, the new tricomponent hydrogel is expected to be applied in biomedical field to achieve adjustable adhesion and on-demand peeling.

Development of wound dressings that not only have multiple advantages including good biocompatibility, barrier properties, adhesive properties , but also exhibit anti-bacterial, anti-infection, and promote cell adhesion , accelerated wound healing process, remains challenging in the skin tissue engineering. In this work, a noninvasive adhesive biofoam with interconnectivity structure and antibacterial property was first-time designed through solid surfactant stabilized high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) template , where bacteriostatic Zn-CuO@GO nanosheets dynamic assemble with 4-vinylphenylboronic acid at the oil/water interface as cooperative emulsifier . Taking advantage of the cooperative assembly of the PBA/Zn-CuO@GO, the biofoams display microfibrousity and interconnectivity to facilitate material-cellular interaction as well nutrient exchange, and can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus. Meanwhile, phenylboronic acid functional groups not only endow biofoam reversible adhesive property though dynamic phenylboronic acid/cis-diol interaction, but also facilitate the rearrangement of Zn-CuO@GO nanosheets in more uniform way at emulsion interface. Taken together, the biofoams can strongly adhere to the wound bed reducing the risk of infection and accelerate earlier tissue regeneration , which exhibit great potential in bioengineering application.

Functional hydrogels have attracted enormous interest as wet adhesives for biomedical research and engineering applications. However, reversible hydrogel adhesives that can be used for gelid conditions were rarely reported. In this work, we have developed a freezing-tolerant (freezing temperature < −50 °C), ultra-stretchable (stretch strain > 30000% at 25 °C) glycerol-ionic hydrogel via the ultraviolet curing of acrylamide monomer and hyper-branched polyethylenimine polymer in CaCl 2 -water-glycerol solution. The fabricated hydrogel exhibited reversible gelid adhesion, rapid self-healing (recover in 3 s) and weight-retaining (>2 weeks) properties. The hydrogel allows two iron substrates to adhere together at −40 °C with the lap-shear adhesion strength as high as ~1 MPa. Such strong adhesion measured was reversible, specifically achieving ~100% of initial adhesion strength at 25 °C and ~36% at −40 °C. Additionally, decreasing the testing temperature significantly improved the tensile strength but decreased the fracture strain of the hydrogel. Interestingly, lap-shear adhesion tests suggested that the gelid adhesion strength was enhanced by 130 times as the testing temperature decreased from 25 °C to −40 °C, which was mainly attributed to the enhanced mechanical strength of the bulk hydrogel as well as the increased surface interaction at gel-substrate interfaces. More importantly, the adhesion failure gradually changed from cohesive failure to adhesive failure as the temperature decreased. This work provides new practical and fundamental insights into developing multifunctional freezing-tolerant hydrogel adhesive for gelid conditions.

Hydrogels with fully physical networks process significant advantages as convenient injection, self-healing, and biodegradable properties probably accompanied with unfavorable mechanics, adhesiveness, and drug-loading characteristics. In this study, N -acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA)–grafted gelatin decorated with photosensitive N′ -(2-nitrobenzyl) ( NB ) moiety, denoted as GN, was synthesized via a convenient one-step Michael addition. The GN hydrogels in terms of gelatin physical reinforcement was conveniently constructed via UV-induced NB group separation and dual -amide discharge. Also released are curcumin drugs loaded into hydrophobic NB groups via hydrophobic association. Contrastive analysis on a series of GN hydrogels with different degrees of substitution (DS) was performed. As a result, the GN-5 hydrogel with moderate DS (~ 41.2 ± 1.3%) possessed the overall optimal performance with the highest final storage modulus, maximal compression stress, most dense pore structure, and minimal swelling deformation. In addition, the fully physical networks thoroughly assisted in degradation, fast self-healing, and thermo-reversible adhesiveness. Most importantly, the further curcumin release achieved via heating induced H-bonding destruction, and the Ritger-Peppas model best described the dynamic drug release traces during the four kinetic models, which show great application potential in the field of biomedical materials. Graphical The fully physically reinforced gelatin hydrogels afford as a periodic curcumin delivery system with convenient injection, fast self-healing, thoroughly degradation, and thermo-reversible adhesion.

The controllable tough adhesion of hydrogels and solid surfaces is essential for the development of soft-rigid hybrid medical devices. However, controllability is challenging for numerous tough adhesive hydrogels. Here, we develop a tough adhesion double network hydrogel based on bovine serum albumin and polyacrylamide (BSA/PAAm DN gel) with adjustable and robust adhesion toward diverse solid substrates because of the dynamic disulfide bonds (−S–S–). The albumin-based double network hydrogel simultaneously shows superior bulk toughness and interfacial toughness. To prepare the BSA/PAAm DN gel, the solid substrate is first modified with a silane coupling agent containing sulfhydryl, and then, the BSA/PAAm DN gel is in situ polymerized on the modified solid substrate. During the formation and destruction of disulfide bonds, the BSA/PAAm DN gel is attained between the surface of the hydrogel and modified solid substrates with reversible adhesion and on-demand debonding. The tough interfacial toughness of BSA/PAAm DN gel on diverse solid substrates exceeds 1000 J m–2, and the adhesion energy even reaches 5000 J m–2 for glass. This double network hydrogel based on the protein and polymer provides insights into the application of tough adhesion hydrogels for hybrid medical devices.

It is extremely attractive to introduce reversible adhesive hydrogel into the field of sampling wipe for enhancing the sampling efficiency, which facilitates the development of understanding in fundamental science and technology innovation including interfacial interaction, flexible sensor, visualized detection and so forth. Here, a polyacrylic acid/polyvinyl alcohol-borax (PAA/PVA-B) hydrogel is proposed by introducing double-network microstructure for enhancing cohesive strength, and numerous carboxyl, hydroxyl groups as well as borax for facilitating the hydrogen and dynamic borate bond formation, ensuring its reversible adhesive capability. Benefitting from the noncovalent and dynamic covalent bonds, excellent reversible adhesion to diverse surfaces for 50 cycles without apparently decreasing the adhesive force, and high transfer efficiency of stamp patterns (about 99.8%) are successfully achieved. More importantly, efficient wipe sampling in various scenarios by the PAA/PVA-B hydrogel toward the microparticulates of three representative explosives, including military explosive of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT, 0.6 µg) and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT, 1.2 µg), improvised explosive of sulfur (S, 16 µg) could be consolidated owing to the hydrogen bonds and van der Waals force. Inspired by on-site visualization of microgramme-level explosives with this PAA/PVA-B hydrogel-based colorimetric sensor, it is expected that the present strategy could not only deepen the insights of interfacial interaction but also stretch the field of both hydrogel and sampling method to new level.

The effective transfer of tiny liquid droplets is vital for a number of processes such as chemical and biological microassays. Inspired by the tarsi of meniscus-climbing insects, which can climb menisci by deforming the water/air interface, we developed a mechano-regulated surface consisting of a background mesh and a movable microfibre array with contrastive wettability. The adhesion of this mechano-regulated surface to liquid droplets can be reversibly switched through mechanical reconfiguration of the microfibre array. The adhesive force can be tuned by varying the number and surface chemistry of the microfibres. The in situ adhesion of the mechano-regulated surface can be used to manoeuvre micro-/nanolitre liquid droplets in a nearly loss-free manner. The mechano-regulated surface can be scaled up to handle multiple droplets in parallel. Our approach offers a miniaturized mechano-device with switchable adhesion for handling micro-/nanolitre droplets, either in air or in a fluid that is immiscible with the droplets.

Reversible adhesives are widely needed in our daily lives and industrial applications. However, robust and switchable adhesion on rough surfaces with on-demand attachment and detachment remains highly challenging. Here, we report a snail-mucus-inspired touch-responsive hydrogel (TRH), whose universal and robust adhesion is triggered by simple contact with the attaching surface. TRH is composed of a polymeric hydrogel and saturated sodium acetate (NaAc) and is prepared by one-pot synthesis. At room temperature, TRH remains in an amorphous and soft state, which allows it to conformally adapt to rough surfaces. The contact with the target surface triggers the crystallization of NaAc, which increases the modulus of TRH by an order of magnitude and interlocks with the target surfaces, achieving an adhesion of up to 204.84 ± 53.98 kPa. Upon heating, TRH returns to a soft state, facilitating easy detachment with adhesion of 5.12 ± 1.34 kPa. Meanwhile, the detached TRH is ready for the next adhesion without the need to be maintained at high temperature. TRH finds applications as a smart material for light-triggered adhesion switching, information encryption, and temperature sensors.
