To address the growing demand for energy-efficient information storage and smart displays, we have developed a fast, self-healing, rewritable photochromic hydrogel based on visible light-responsive reverse photochromism. The developed hydrogel is engineered by integrating carboxyl-functionalized spiropyran into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix, utilizing hydrogen bonding, crystallization of PVA chains, and B–O bonds. The reverse photochromic effect is significantly enhanced by the addition of sodium tetraborate, which is further augmented by the temperature increase. Additionally, a carboxyl-functionalized spirooxazine is used as a couple for UV tuning stimulation, so the self-healing reverse photochromic hydrogel could respond to both the visible and UV, impacting more diverse color variations as well as enhancing the controllability of the hydrogel. This approach promotes the development of reverse photochromic hydrogels, potentially expanding their applications in tunable and rewritable display technologies.

Paper, for writing and printing, is consumed a lot in modern life. However, the production of conventional paper could cause many problems, such as deforestation and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to explore novel strategies to solve these problems. In this work, a polyoxometalate-doped gelatin film with high strength, excellent transparency, and fast photochromic properties is designed and prepared. The film can display different colors by using a variety of reagents, exhibiting its potential application as a paper medium. Its rapid photochromic properties allow complex high-resolution images to be displayed by UV light printing. It is found that the mechanical and photochromic properties could be regulated by the introduction of triethylene glycol, and the fading process could be controlled by changing the temperature and humidity. Moreover, it is rewritable, self-repairable, and recyclable, and can also achieve long-term preservation without fading. It is envisioned that the environmentally friendly films with low cost, ease of preparation, and recycling advantages have the potential to be an alternative to conventional paper for writing and printing.

Bright structural colors with an angular-independent character are in increasing demand in many fields such as pigments, buildings, sensors, color displays, and anti-counterfeiting labels. However, the structural colors produced by amorphous colloidal assemblies with low refractive index contrast or without black additives often exhibit low color visibility and low liquid-bleaching resistibility. Herein, large-scale and angle-independent structural colors were constructed from Fe3O4@SiO2 colloidal quasi-amorphous arrays (QAAs) prepared through a rapid “spraying” process. Due to the high-refractive-index and intrinsic black nature of Fe3O4, the coatings exhibit high brightness of structural colors even on white substrates under ambient lighting conditions. Moreover, as-obtained structural colors possess the ability of antiliquid bleaching and solvent-responsiveness. More importantly, flexible Fe3O4@SiO2/PDMS photonic paper can be fabricated by permeation of PDMS into the voids of Fe3O4@SiO2 colloidal QAAs. This QAAs-based photonic paper shows the ability to infuse silicone oils into its structure, locally swelling it and changing the reflected color. In turn, the resulting colored patterns can be easily erased by applying ethanol or low molecular weight silicone oils. The as-prepared photonic paper exhibits excellent durability and is rewritable at least 50 times without any significant changes in performance. Compared with the traditional long-range ordered photonic crystals, the rapidly prepared QAAs-based photonic coatings have unique advantages in the applications of permanents, color coatings, color printing, liquid colorimetric sensors, rewritable photonic paper, etc. because of the good structural color performance and are suitable for rapid and large-area preparation.

Compared with traditional paper, water rewritable photonic crystal (PC) paper is an environmentally friendly and low resource-consuming material for information storage. Although, recently reported PC papers have high-quality structure color showing promising prospect, the paper size, that is within several centimeters, still limits turning it from potential to reality. Here, we present a new water rewritable PC film as large as the A4 size (210 × 300 mm2) with a high-quality structure color. The material is prepared by thermal assisted self-assembly on the air–liquid interface. To fix such a large-area self-assembled PC film, we partially deform and coalesce the self-assembled nanoparticles, which have low glass transition temperature. This process causes the film to be transparent and structural colorless but still keeps the inner 3D-ordered structure. Then, utilizing the hydrophilic nature of the assembled block, the film can be switched to a structural color state by touching water. Diverse brilliant structural colors appear with different assembled particle (poly(butyl methacrylate-co-methylmethacrylate-co-butyl acrylate-co-diacetone acrylamide) named as PBMBD) sizes. The transparency–structural color transition can be performed multiple times reversibly in all or specific regions of the film. It provides a new solution for future applications of rewriteable PC paper.

Conductive structures determine the functions and actuation modes of electrically responsive soft actuators. The rewritability of conductive structures is highly desirable but has not been realized in electro-driven actuators. Typically, once conductive pathways are established, they can hardly be modified; thus, the function of the actuator is permanently fixed. In this study, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is developed as a rewritable conductive coating for actuators composed of liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs). This enables reconfigurable, adaptive, and precisely controllable electro-driven motions and the repeated use of the same actuator for various purposes without disposal. Moreover, different PEDOT:PSS layers can be coated onto different regions, thus enabling the assembly of different actuation behaviors in a monolithic actuator under a single input voltage. Unlike all previously reported soft actuators that respond to electricity and light, opposite shape changes in an actuator with a series circuit can be performed under these two stimuli. Furthermore, when combining LCEs with dynamic covalent bonds, the PEDOT:PSS-coated LCE (PEDOT:PSS-LCE) actuator can be reprogrammed based on two different mechanisms: rewriting the conductive PEDOT:PSS patterns and re-aligning the LCEs. This versatile method can be adapted to other types of actuators.

Rewritable photonic crystal (PC) paper has the potential to significantly reduce the consumption of forest resources in the printing industry, while also being environmentally friendly and efficient. However, traditional PC papers based on solvent or photothermal responses can lead to diffusion, which can hinder printing accuracy. In this study, a novel rewritable PC paper compatible with pin-printing is presented based on a pressure-responsive shape-memory PC paper. High-resolution printing can be realized by both computer-programmed 3D-printed seals and pin-printing techniques. The information written on this PC rewritable paper can be erased by water, enabling the paper to be rewritten and reused at least 8 times without any change in performance. Furthermore, the information stored on the PC paper is stable and can be stored in ordinary environments for at least 6 months without fading. The PC paper has the capability of multicolor printing with a precision finer than 100 μm and has potential in office papers, smart price tags, and anti-counterfeiting labels.

With the growing demand for information security, luminescent hydrogels with time dependence are highly required. However, the insufficient encryption sophistication and poor rewritability still hinder their application exploration in various scenarios. Herein, reversible multi-responsive fluorescent hydrogels with time-dependent information displays are successfully developed based on a dynamic coordinated interaction strategy. The fluorescent hydrogels are prepared by penetrating pyridine-dihydrazone-crosslinked oxidized dextran into poly(vinyl alcohol) networks. Fluorescent quenching and enhancement are achieved by dynamically controlling the coordination interaction of pyridine-dihydrazone-based ligands with Fe 3+ and Zr 4+ via the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and coordination effect (CE) mechanism, respectively. Notably, distinct time-dependent fluorescent recoveries are found upon further treatment with H + , which is attributed to differential coordination energies of Fe 3+ and Zr 4+ with ligands. On the basis of multi-responsive distinct yet reversible fluorescence behavior, the encoded information loaded by Fe 3+ /Zr 4+ can be sequentially decrypted until erased under the treatment of H + over time. Moreover, excellent rewritability can be realized by the alternation of metal ions and acid. Ultimately, rewritable 2D and 3D anti-counterfeiting platforms with time dependence are established to improve the security level of information encryption. This work affords an inspiring approach to developing time-dependent information encoding systems with enhanced security and rewritability.

Plasmonic nanostructures provide unique structural coloration features via resonant interactions with light, rendering them useful in various optical applications. Here, new types of novel plasmonic-photonic Janus (PPJ) films are developed by introducing aluminum nanoislands on the surface of colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) arrays. Notably, the obtained PPJ films show vivid and tunable plasmonic colors ranging from purple to golden that can be regulated by the sizes of nanoisland architectures. Exquisite multicolored patterns on PPJ films have also been successfully achieved via regioselective deposition, showcasing enormous potentials in decorations. More intriguingly, by virtue of the sensitivity of Al nanoislands to the medium, the PPJ films display superior colorimetric detection ability in response to different solvents and biomolecule glucose. Leveraging these merits, advanced rewritable papers and reliable express waybills have been demonstrated based on PPJ films, offering abilities to deliver information reversibly and erase them on-demand. This work establishes a new platform for achieving versatile applications within a single plasmonic system, opening up vast possibilities for advancements in information delivery and personal information security.

Rewritable information record materials usually demand not only reversibly stimuli-responsive ability, but also strong mechanical properties. To achieve one photochromic hydrogel with super-strong mechanical strength, hydrophobic molecule spiropyran (SP) has been introduced into a copolymer based on ion-hybrid crosslink. The hydrogels exhibit both photoinduced reversible color changes and excellent mechanical properties, i.e., the tensile stress of 3.22 MPa, work of tension of 12.8 MJ m −3 , and modulus of elasticity of 8.6 MPa. Moreover, the SP-based Ca 2+ crosslinked hydrogels can be enhanced further when exposed to UV-light via ionic interaction coordination between Ca 2+ , merocyanine (MC) with polar copolymer chain. In particular, hydrogels have excellent reversible conversion behavior, which can be used to realize repeatable writing of optical information. Thus, the novel design is demonstrated to support future applications in writing repeatable optical information, optical displays, information storage, artificial intelligence systems, and flexible wearable devices.

Superhydrophobic surface has potential applications in various fields due to its excellent water repellency. In particular, fluorine-free superhydrophobic film has attracted extensive attentions. In this study, an eco-friendly and rewritable superhydrophobic coating is successfully prepared by a simple spray-coating method. Hydrophilic silica nanoparticles are immobilized on a substrate by water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and then the surface is further modified by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to obtain a superhydrophobic coating. The prepared coating has a water contact angle of 160 o , and exhibits good stability. Most importantly, when the superhydrophobic coating is no longer needed, it can be removed and the substrate can be reused. The eco-friendly and rewritable superhydrophobic coating should have promising potentials in daily life.

Rewritable luminescent paper is particularly crucial, considering the ultrahigh paper consumption and confidential information security, but a highly desirable stimuli-responsive smart luminescent material with excellent water solubility has rarely been studied. Herein, a new type of rewritable paper made by highly efficient green light emissive zero-dimensional (0D) organic manganese halides is rationally designed by virtue of the reversible photoluminescence (PL) off–on switching. Specifically, the green emission can be linearly quenched by water vapor in a wide humidity range and again recovered in a dry atmosphere, which make it a smart hydrochromic PL off–on switching and humidity sensor. Benefiting from the reversible luminescence off–on switch and excellent water solubility, rewritable luminescent paper is realized through water-jet security printing technology on 0D halide-coated commercial paper with high resolution. The printed/written information can be easily cleaned by slight heating with outstanding “write–erase–write” cycle capabilities. In addition, multiple light source-induced coincident green light emissions further provide convenience to realize anti-counterfeiting, encryption and decryption of confidential information, and so forth. This work highlights the superiority of dynamic ionic-bonded 0D organic manganese halides as reversible PL switching materials in rewritable luminescent paper, high-security-level information printing, storage and protection technologies, and so forth.

The botanical world inspires scientists to develop various smart actuators with diverse mechanical motions in response to external stimuli. However, it is challenging to obtain programmable and reversible hydrogel actuators. Herein, we presented a bioinspired nanocomposite hydrogel composed of poly(NIPAM-co-AA) and tunicate cellulose nanocrystals (TCNCs). A direct current electric field (DC-EF) was applied to induce controllable distribution of the TCNCs via electrophoresis for the formation of a gradient structure. To mimic the leaflet structure of Mimosa pudica, the patterns written using a lye pen on the hydrogel acted as the “pinnae” of leaves, while the residual regions worked as the “rachis” parts. With the increase of temperature, the “rachis” area of the nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited a large bending deformation because the gradient distribution of TCNCs induced asymmetric shrinkage, whereas the “pinnae” changed slightly because –COO−/–COO− electrostatic repulsion maintained the swelling state of the hydrogel network, like the leaflet folding of Mimosa pudica. Furthermore, these bioinspired hydrogel actuators with erasable and rewritable patterns exhibited programmable deformation, good stability, and good cycling performance. This work provided a facile yet efficient strategy for the fabrication of hydrogel actuators with rewritable patterns and programmable shape deformations.
