Pesticide spraying droplets are prone to break and splash when they reach the leaf surface, especially for hydrophobic leaves. The lost pesticide will not deposit on the leaf surface to exert its effect, which eventually enters the environment to cause pollution and even endanger human health. The need to increase spray droplet deposition on plant leaf surfaces has been a great challenge. Many recent studies have increased the deposition of droplets by adding surfactants to spray liquids to reduce surface tension. Here, we propose a carrier system that is a coordination-triggered hierarchical folate/zinc supramolecular hydrogel loaded with pesticide active ingredient to improve the deposition of pesticide droplets. Rather than enhancing deposition by reducing the surface tension like surfactants, the pesticide-loaded folate/zinc hydrogel restricts the movement of liquid droplets through internal cross-linking to form nanofiber networks, thereby suppressing drop broken splashing and bouncing. Morever, the folate/zinc hydrogel is a biocompatible carrier with abundant raw material sources and simple preparation. The research in this paper provides new insights and directions for the study of green pesticide formulations and the enhancement of pesticide droplet deposition.

BACKGROUND The significant loss of dosage during pesticide interfacial transfer notably undermines bioavailability, posing a critical challenge to sustainable agriculture. Designing pesticide formulations with efficient foliar deposition facilitates reduced application rates and enhanced efficacy. RESULTS In this study, methyl-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)silicon (TSS) was grafted onto carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) via a free radical polymerization reaction, followed by self-assembly to form an amphiphilic carrier (C-A x -T y ). The carrier then encapsulated eugenol (Eug) through hydrophobic interactions, resulting in the rational construction of the amphiphilic carboxymethyl chitosan-based nanopesticide delivery system (Eug@C-A x -T y ). The regulation of TSS addition during carrier preparation significantly reduced dynamic surface tension while simultaneously increasing the viscosity of the solutions. Droplet impact dynamics evaluation confirmed that C-A x -T y effectively mitigated rebound behavior during high-speed collisions with hydrophobic surfaces. Notably, Eug@C-A x -T y exhibited superior dynamic wettability, as demonstrated by impact dynamics analysis and energy conversion analysis. Leveraging the enhanced foliar deposition ability and delayed volatilization of Eug, vegetables treated with Eug@C-A 0.4 -T 1.0 demonstrated improved antifeedant activity against Spodoptera litura . Moreover, Eug@C-A x -T y exhibited significantly enhanced antibacterial activity against foodborne Staphylococcus aureus compared to Eug, while also demonstrating reduced phytotoxicity and minimal inhibition of seed germination. CONCLUSION This study provides theoretical insights for enhancing the foliar deposition of nanopesticide formulations and improving the bioavailability of plant essential oils, thus offering promising applications in sustainable agriculture. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Mitigating inefficiencies and environmental pollution caused by weak foliar adhesion and rapid release during pesticide application is a significant challenge in agricultural development. This study addresses this issue by preparing asymmetric wetting Janus mesoporous silica nanocarriers (AWJ-MSN) through the adjustment of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomer ratios via interfacial modification. Subsequently, asymmetric wetting Janus nanopesticide delivery systems (Thi@AWJ-MSN) were constructed by encapsulating the model pesticide molecule, thiafuramide (Thi). The coexistence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments on the AWJ-MSN imparts interfacial activity, enhancing spreadability on plant leaves with different wettability (Brassica chinensis L., Cucumis sativus L., and Arachis hypogaea L.). The droplet impact behavior of the AWJ-MSN on plant leaves and artificial PTFE membrane surfaces was analyzed through normalization, revealing a reduced normalized spreading height (Ht/D0) and an increased normalized spreading diameter (Dt/D0). These findings indicate the enhanced foliar deposition ability of the AWJ-MSN under real-world foliar spraying conditions. Furthermore, the encapsulation of Thi within the nanocarriers protects the active pesticide ingredients, enabling sustained release through quasi-Fickian diffusion and ultimately prolonging the pesticide’s efficacy. This study provides theoretical guidance for the aqueous formulation and reduction of pesticide use, contributing to reduced environmental risks and offering potential applications in agriculture.

The limited foliar deposition of agrochemicals on superhydrophobic foliar surfaces, caused by interfacial incompatibility and environmental loss, critically constrains sustainable crop protection. To address the challenge, the work engineered hierarchical structured Pickering emulsions (PEs) droplets with UV-tuning liquid-liquid micro/nano-interfaces based on supramolecular chemistry. Azobenzene-modified alginate (HMSA-Azo) and guanine derivatives (GuA) served as foundational building blocks, assembling via π-π stacking interactions at the oil-water interfaces. Flexible interfacial particle films were constructed by these components through self-assembly, exhibiting exceptional mechanical stability and adaptive coupling deformation. Multiscale characterization combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and dissipative quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D) revealed that 365-nm irradiation reinforced π-π stacking between HMSA-Azo and GuA, thereby enhancing the mechanical stability of interfacial films. Meanwhile, 254-nm light triggered GuA-mediated photothermal conversion at the liquid-solid interfaces, inducing adaptive coupling deformation of flexible interfacial particle films. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) visualized how this nonequilibrium rearrangement of self-assembled nanoparticles penetrated air barrier layers. The dual-light-tuning PEs achieved: 97 % energy dissipation efficiency through interfacial film strengthening, 46 % reduction in 3D network porosity during emulsion drying, 89.92 % rainfall-resistant foliar retention. Controlled potted trials validated biosafety of the emulsion delivery system and completed barnyard grass eradication (100 % mortality rate) with outstanding bioactivity. Furthermore, sequential UVA/UVC irradiation amplified the carrier's regulatory effect, improving the utilization efficiency of active ingredients. The key to this work hinged on light-mediated synergy between liquid-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces, enabling the deposition of targeted leaves with environmental adaptability.

Responsive release systems have received extensive attention to enhance pesticide utilization efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. In this study, pH/GSH dual responsive release system based on brush-like silica (bSiO 2 ) carriers was constructed to enhance the utilization of pesticides. The bSiO 2 carriers present core-shell structure, length of 550 nm, diameter of 350 nm and shell thickness of 100 nm. The carrier had a high pesticide loading (20.0 %, w/w) for dinotefuran (Din). After loading Din, zein was covalently linked with cysteine-bridge to seal the loaded pesticides (namely Din@bSiO 2 @Zein). The Din@bSiO 2 @Zein exhibited superior foliar affinity, retention and photostability, and retention rate still remain above 95 % with 220 min UV irradiation. Din@bSiO 2 @Zein displayed pH/GSH responsive release and the cumulative release within 92 h was up to 81 % under pH=9/C GSH =6 mM, mimicking the microenvironment of lepidopteran. The Din@bSiO 2 @Zein possessed good control efficacy against Plutella xylostella . Appreciably, Din@bSiO 2 @Zein could be transported bi-directionally to various regions of tobacco plants within 24 h, which had potential to promote pesticide efficacy. This work offers a strategy to minimize the pesticide dosage and encourage sustainable agricultural development.
