Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Waterborne Lambda-Cyhalothrin/Alkyd Nanoemulsion

He Qin,Xiaoteng Zhou,Danfei Gu,Lingxiao Li,Chengyou Kan

Inefficient usage and overdosage of conventional pesticide formulations has resulted in large economic losses and environmental pollution due to their poor water solubility and weak adhesion to foliage. In order to develop a green and efficient pesticide formulation, a kind of alkyd resin (AR) based on vegetable oil was first synthesized and used to fabricate the lambda-cyhalothrin/AR (LC/AR) nanoemulsion via in situ phase inverse emulsification, and its properties were then investigated. Results showed that the particle size of the LC/AR nanoemulsion was 50–150 nm with maximum LC loading capacity of as much as 40.9 wt %, high encapsulation efficiency >90%, and great stability in multiple environments. The LC/AR nanoemulsion exhibited better controlled release characteristics compared with LC commercial formulations, and a stronger adhesion on the foliage of the resulted nanoemulsion was also observed, which was attributed to low surface tension and strong interactions with foliar surfaces.

Development of lignin-coated natural polysaccharide-based nanopesticides for both high foliar adhesion and rapid release of pesticide molecules against bacteriostasis

Hanchen Lin,Shanshan Li,Like Ning,Ning Ma,Peng Xu,Mei Hong,Fei Wang,Chaoqun You

The development of novel intelligent systems for controlling pesticide release has emerged as a crucial strategy in contemporary agriculture, aimed at enhancing the efficacy of pesticide application and mitigating environmental hazards. To address the technical bottleneck of low drug utilization rate in large-area spraying, a novel pesticide-controlled release system (NES@LCMs) with high adhesion and low-temperature responsiveness was developed by utilizing chitosan (CS) and methylcellulose (MC) as substrates, which were subsequently coated with lignin (LGN) to enhance the stability of the microspheres. The results showed that the drug-carrying microspheres based on natural polysaccharides can maintain a high deposition rate and avoid the degradation of pesticide molecules by sunlight. Meanwhile, the results of the release experiments demonstrated that NES@LCMs exhibited enhanced inhibitory effects under acidic and low-temperature conditions. The antifungal activity experiments demonstrated that the NES@LCMs exhibited a remarkable efficacy of 82.7% against Gibberella zeae (G. zeae), thereby enabling intelligent controlled release and extended control duration. The biosafety experiments demonstrated that the NES@LCMs nanoparticles significantly reduced the toxicity of NES towards organisms. Therefore, the pH and temperature dual-responsive NES@LCMs nanoparticles show promising potential for enhanced targeting efficacy and environmental safety.

Chitosan-based nanopesticides enhanced anti-fungal activity against strawberry anthracnose as “sugar-coated bombs”

Jian Wu,Jinzhe Chang,Jun Liu,Jiajian Huang,Zixia Song,Xiaofeng Xie,Liting Wei,Jiaxin Xu,Suqing Huang,Dongmei Cheng,Youzhi Li,Hanhong Xu,Zhixiang Zhang

A chitosan-based nanoparticle was prepared using chitosan (CS) and O -carboxymethyl chitosan ( O -CMCS). Our study revealed that chitosan/ O -carboxymethyl chitosan/tebuconazole nanoparticles (CS/ O -CMCS/TBA NPs) exhibited superior antifungal activity, foliar adhesion, and microbial target adhesion performance compared to commercial suspension concentrate (SC). The antifungal activity of CS/ O -CMCS/TBA NPs against C. gloeosporioides , with a 3.13-fold increase in efficacy over TBA (SC). We also found that low concentrations of CS/ O -CMCS NPs promoted the growth of C. gloeosporioides and enhanced the fungal catabolism of chitosan. Overall, the CS/ O -CMCS/TBA NPs were found to possess the remarkable capability to selectively aggregate around pathogenic microorganisms and CS/ O -CMCS NPs can enhance the fungal catabolism of chitosan. CS/ O -CMCS/TBA NPs, as a “sugar-coated bomb”, was a promising asset for effective plant disease management and pesticide utilization through the affinity of chitosan-based nanoparticles and C. gloeosporioides , enabling targeted delivery and targeted release of their encapsulated active ingredient, which was important for the development and application of biocompatible chitosan-based nanopesticides.

Degradable PDA@PNIPAM-TA Nanocomposites for Temperature- and NIR light-Controlled Pesticide Release

Manting Wang,Rongrong Fan,Qingjian Yu,Jie-Xin Wang,Yuan Le,Jian-Feng Chen

Controlled pesticide delivery systems offer many distinctive advantages over conventional pesticide formulations. In this work, degradable poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)–tannic acid (TA) microgels and multifunctional PDA@PNIPAM-TA nanocomposites were prepared in a high-gravity rotating packed bed reactor (RPB) for smart pesticide delivery and release. The as-prepared microgels and nanocomposites showed reversible temperature-dependent swelling/deswelling behavior and irreversible pH-induced degradation. A dynamic contact angle test suggested that the introduction of TA and PDA into the PNIPAM matrix could enhance foliar adhesion and deposition efficiency. The nanocomposites were further used for the encapsulation and delivery of imidacloprid (IMI) to protect it from rapid photolysis and improve its pest-control efficiency. Their thermoresponsive behavior as well as pesticide loading capacity could be tuned by tailoring the PNIPAM-TA shell thickness, which could be varied by the NIPAM amount. The release rate of IMI from the core/shell nanocomposites was positively correlated with environmental temperature and near-infrared (NIR) light, which was adaptive to the positive temperature-dependent toxicity correlation of IMI and the increasing trend of pests under high temperature. The cumulative release of IMI was 23.5% at 25 °C, while it was 81.2% at 40 °C after 24 h of incubation, and the release rate was greatly enhanced under NIR irradiation. The results indicated that the facile control of pesticide release could be realized by regulating environmental conditions. This work also provides an idea for using high-gravity technology to conveniently construct a smart, effective, and environmentally friendly pesticide delivery system for sustainable crop protection.
