Amphiphilicity-Driven Small Alcohols Regulate the Flexibility of Pesticide-Loaded Microcapsules for Better Foliar Adhesion and Utilization

Haichao Cao,Yue Chen,Zhigang Qian,Tingjie Huang,Nan Zou,Daxia Zhang,Wei Mu,Beixing Li,Feng Liu

The foliar loss of pesticides causes serious utilization decline and environmental risk. On the basis of biomimetics, pesticide-loaded microcapsules (MCs) with spontaneous deformation on foliar micro/nanostructures, like the snail suction cup, are prepared by interfacial polymerization. By controlling the usage or types of small alcohols in the MC preparation system, the flexibility of MCs is tunable. Through the investigation of emulsions and MC structures, we discover that the migration and distribution of small alcohols driven by amphiphilicity affect the process of interfacial polymerization between polyethylene glycol and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate. By hydrophobic modification of the polymer and competition for oil monomers of small alcohols, the thickness and compactness of shells are reduced, whereas the density of the core is increased. As a result of the regulation in structures, the flexibility of MCs is improved significantly. In particularly, the MCs-N-pentanol (0.1 mol kg–1) with the best flexibility show strong scouring resistance on varied foliar structures, sustained release property on the air/solid interface, and persistent control effect against foliar diseases. The pesticide-loaded soft MCs provide an effective way to improve pesticide foliar utilization.

Pesticide loaded nanohydrogel based on attapulgite and gelatin with improved foliar adhesion

Sijia Zhang,Zhenggang Xiao

BACKGROUNDS Pesticides have been widely applied to promote plant growth due to their high insecticidal efficiency. However, most pesticides easily slip from the leaf surface due to the low foliar adhesion, leading to significant damage to the environment and human health. Increasing foliar adhesion of pesticides has been a major challenge. Nanomaterial technology, which can deliver pesticide active ingredients, offers a new opportunity to increase pesticides efficacy with higher foliar adhesion. RESULTS In this study, we prepared the pesticide loaded nanohydrogel ALP@Ge-g-P(AA-co-AM)/ATP by grafting attapulgite and gelatin onto P(AA-co-AM), and loading the pesticide alphacypermethrin synchronously via the emulsion solvent evaporation method. The size of the new nanohydrogel was 20.5 nm and the pesticide loading capacity was 21.5%. Compared to P(AA-co-AM), the water absorbency of Ge-g-P(AA-co-AM)/ATP increased by 54.3% in 120 min, while the water retention increased from 4.27% to 38.7% after 48 h. Washout experiments and contact angle results suggested that the nanohydrogel, with a contact angle of 44.8° indicating good wettability, can resist rain flush and increase foliar adhesion naturally. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the preparation of pesticide loaded nanohydrogel is simple. Experiments demonstrated the pesticide loaded nanohydrogel has high efficiency and strong foliar adhesion. This makes it a promising candidate for spraying application and reducing pollution levels. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Self-assembly of eugenol-loaded particles to regulate the adhesion of carriers on leaves for efficient foliar applications and ecotoxicological safety

Tao Zhang,Hongzhen Sun,Shuai Hu,Shaowu Ding,Peng Zhang,Ling Wang,Weidi Fan,Feng Liu,Wei Mu,Xiuyu Pang

Currently, there is a pressing need to develop an agrochemical-loaded system that is both uncomplicated and efficient, thereby enhancing the adhesion of agrochemical to leaf surfaces and optimizing their insecticidal efficacy, while concurrently mitigating environmental risks. The flexible eugenol-loaded particles were synthesized via a one-step polyurethane self-assembly reaction, utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the soft segment and 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the hard segment. The increase in the length of the soft segment enhances the flexibility of the particles, thereby improving the contact area and adhesion with the foliar surface. When flexible particles are applied on the foliar surface, they can achieve satisfactory resistance to rainfall erosion. When the PEG molecular weight is 800, the residual concentration of eugenol can still reach 42.11% after 6 washes. The carrier protects the active ingredients and improves the resistance to ultraviolet irradiation. After 5 h of ultraviolet irradiation, the concentration of eugenol remained at 59.03% when PEG with a molecular weight of 200 was employed. Greenhouse experiments showed that the flexible transformation of particles greatly enhanced the application effect of spray on the foliar surface of particles. After undergoing three washes, the mortality of the particles can be enhanced by 5.4–8.4 times compared to that of emulsion concentrate (EC) sample. The enhancement of leaf retention performance reduces environmental risks caused by pesticide loss. Meanwhile, the controlled release of particles also reduces the acute toxicity to zebrafish. The toxicity selection pressure of the EUG@P800-Ps sample is 10.6 times that of the EC sample. In conclusion, the preparation process of the system is simple, and the flexible transformation is an effective strategy to improve the foliar application effect of spray and improve the environmental safety.

Chitin nanocrystal Pickering emulsions for sustainable release pesticide microencapsulation with superior leaf adhesion and enhanced safety

Long Chen,Liang Li,Hongyan Chen,Bo Cui,Fei Gao,Jinming Gao,Xiang Zhao,Yan Wang,Haixin Cui,Zhanghua Zeng

Traditional pesticides often exhibit high non-target toxicity, poor stability, short persistence, and susceptibility to wash-off by rain. Pesticide microencapsulation represents a significant advancement in formulation strategies, addressing safety and sustainability concerns associated with conventional pesticides. This study explores the utilization of biodegradable chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs), prepared via acid hydrolysis, for the development of pesticide microcapsules. Specifically, ChNCs were employed to emulsify molten pesticides, followed by interfacial polymerization to fabricate pesticide-loaded microcapsules. Using molten emulsification and Pickering emulsion templates offer a simple and solvent-free approach for microcapsule preparation, eliminating the need for conventional surfactants. The microcapsules displayed a size distribution ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers, which could be tuned by adjusting the ChNCs content. These microcapsules demonstrated remarkable properties, including a high pesticide loading capacity (reaching 78.7% for lambda-cyhalothrin), excellent storage stability, and enzyme-responsive release behavior. Furthermore, the abundant positive charges enhanced the interaction between the microcapsules and leaf surfaces, leading to improved pesticide retention. Microencapsulation reduces acute insecticidal activity of pesticides due to the slow-release effect; however, field experiments provide compelling evidence that microcapsule formulations significantly prolong pesticide efficacy compared to conventional formulations. Additionally, microencapsulation significantly improved the safety of pesticides, with the LC 50 increasing from 0.0116 mg/L to 3.75 mg/L. Overall, this study introduces a promising method for pesticide microencapsulation using ChNCs Pickering emulsion, highlighting its potential advantages and providing valuable insights for the development of environmentally friendly and novel pesticide formulations.

Multifunctional hollow silica carriers with spiny structure for enhanced foliar adhesion and triple-responsive pesticide delivery

Menghui Wan,Tao Hong,Guoxu He,Yanbao Zhao,Lei Sun

Intelligent responsive pesticide formulations hold great promise for enhancing foliage retention and effective utilization. Herein, hollow silica (S-HS) nanocarriers with spiny structure were constructed for pesticide delivery. The S-HS nanocarriers presented homogeneous spiny spheres with an average size of 220 nm. This spiny structure can achieve effective retention on foliage by the “hanger-hat” topology effect. For constructing the responsive layer, the S-HS nanocarriers were further functionalized with surface vinyl groups. After loading imidacloprid (IMI), the temperature sensitive poly N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAm) and tannic acid–Fe complexes (TA-Fe) were introduced to encapsulate pesticides (IMI@S-HS-pNT). The TA-Fe complex layer served as a wall material and photothermal agent. The S-HS-pNT carriers achieved a loading capacity for IMI (26.6 %), high photothermal conversion effect (η = 36.1 %), and good biocompatibility. Except for excellent photostability and foliar adhesion property, the IMI@S-HS-pNT exhibited pH, temperature and near infrared (NIR) responsive release behavior. Moreover, the S-HS nanocarriers could be effectively transported to various parts of tobacco plants under the root immerse or foliar spray. The IMI@S-HS-pNT showed the high control efficacy against Plutella xylostella . Overall, this work provides insight into improving the efficiency of utilization and prolonging pesticide retention on plant leaves.

An Iron-Based Metal–Organic Framework as Nanocarrier for Lambda-Cyhalothrin Delivery: pH-Responsive Controlled Release, Enhanced Leaf Adhesion, and Prolonged Duration Period against Culex pipiens pallens

Rong Zhao,Wei Jia,Youfa Jiang,Xiaoju Wu,Xuefeng Jiang,Saijie Song,Jun Zhang,He Shen,Jian Shen

Lambda-Cyhalothrin (LC) is a high-efficiency and broad-spectrum insecticide. However, due to its poor water dispersion stability and unstable efficacy, it has many problems in practical applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new formulations with stability, low toxicity, and environmental friendliness to overcome the drawbacks of traditional pesticide formulations. This study designed an iron-based metal–organic framework (MIL-101(Fe)) as a nanocarrier for the loading of LC and then surface modified it with polydopamine (PDA) to form the nanopesticide PDA-LC-MIL. The results showed that PDA-LC-MIL has good stability and can achieve controlled release of pesticide by adjusting the pH value. In addition, it also has a good leaf affinity and can effectively adhere on crop leaves, improving the utilization rate of pesticides. The insecticidal experimental results indicate that PDA-LC-MIL has significantly improved sustained insecticidal activity. PDA-LC-MIL also has good biocompatibility and shows no significant inhibitory effect on seed germination and seedling growth of Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek and maize. Therefore, we firmly believe that MIL-based nanopesticides will have broad application prospects in the field of green pesticides and modern agriculture.

Octaphenyl polyoxyethylene regulates the flexibility of pyraclostrobin-loaded soft microcapsules by interfacial polymerization for better foliar adhesion and pesticide utilization

Haichao Cao,Yue Chen,Daxia Zhang,Yan Jin,Peng Zhang,Beixing Li,Wei Mu,Feng Liu

In the preparation of microcapsules (MCs) by interfacial polymerization, octaphenyl polyoxyethylene (OP) is utilized as an emulsifier to control the particle size distribution of MCs. In the preparation system with polyisocyanate as the oil phase monomer, OP has a single hydroxyl (–OH) group that can react with the isocyanic group (–CNO) to prevent polymerization, and the aggregation of OP at the oil–water interface affects the polymer configuration. By the “steric hindrance” and “polymer chain end sealing” of OP, the compactness of the shells was reduced significantly to produce soft MCs. As OP-10 was added and used to increase in pyraclostrobin-loaded MCs preparation, the deformation, adhesion and release of pyraclostrobin-loaded MCs were improved. Therefore, the water scouring resistance of MCs on peanut leaves increased significantly as the MCs became soft. Unfortunately, the safety of zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) declined at the same time. By foliar spraying to control peanut leaf spot in the rainy season, MCs-2% OP-10, with the strongest resistance to rainfall, had the best effect on disease control. In conclusion, an effective strategy is to balance the foliar application efficiency and ecotoxicity of pesticide-loaded MCs by regulating the compactness and components of shells to control their deformation, adhesion and pesticide release.

Carboxymethyl cellulose-coated iron-doped hollow silica carriers with erythrocyte-like structure for improved foliar adhesion and responsive pesticide delivery

Menghui Wan,Hui Li,Yanbao Zhao,Lei Sun

The development of nanopestcide carriers with high foliage adhesion remains a challenging task. Erythrocytes are double concave disc structure with thinner center and thicker rim and erythrocyte-like carriers would present enhanced foliar affinity. In this study, we fabricated novel rough-surfaced erythrocyte-like carriers for pesticide delivery. Firstly, erythrocyte-like silica (ES) nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel method. Subsequently, the ES nanoparticles were further hydrothermal treated to obtain rough-surfaced iron-doped hollow ES (Fe-EHS) nanocarriers. The Fe-EHS nanocarriers could increase contact area and form a topological effect between the pesticide carriers and the micro/nanostructures on plant foliage, effectively enhancing the retention and rain fastness on foliage. Fe-EHS nanocarriers presented a loading capacity of 38.1 % for imidacloprid (IMI). After loading IMI, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was encapsulated to generate nanopesticide delivery system (IMI@Fe-EHS-CMC). The obtained IMI@Fe-EHS-CMC exhibited good foliar adhesion, biosafety, and excellent UV shielding. Additionally, the IMI@Fe-EHS-CMC system possessed pH/cellulase responsive release behavior and could be bidirectionally transported through vascular bundles in tobacco plants. Furthermore, the IMI@Fe-EHS-CMC system showed potent insecticidal activity. This work offers valuable insights for enhancing the effective utilization of pesticides.

A tannic acid-Cu complex coated dendritic mesoporous silica for enhancing pesticide sustain release and flush resistance on foliage

Xu Peng,Wang Shasha,Dai Wei,Shi Weishan,Xing Gang,Wang Zhaogui,Li Qun,You Chaoqun,Hao Dejun

Abstract Pesticides play a crucial role in modern agriculture, yet their widespread use poses a threat to the ecosystem by causing significant environmental damage. In an effort to address this issue, a novel nanopesticide delivery system was developed, utilizing a tannic acid (TA)-Cu combination deposited onto the surface of dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs). This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency of pesticide utilization. The process involved incorporating Tebuconazole (Teb) into DMSNs using the one-pot sol-gel method. Subsequently, a coating was applied through the sequential addition of TA and CuCl 2 to an aqueous dispersion of Teb@DMSNs. The resulting nanopesticide, named TA@Teb@DMSNs, exhibited a spherical shape and achieved an impressive Teb loading rate of nearly 26.6%. Kinetic studies on Teb release revealed that TA@Teb@DMSNs demonstrated characteristics conducive to controlled and sustained release. The adhesion quality of TA@Teb@DMSNs on Aesculus chinensis Bunge leaves was confirmed through a comparative study with Teb@DMSNs. Additionally, when compared to Teb suspension, TA@Teb@DMSNs exhibited superior antifungal activity against Fusarium esculenta wilt over an extended period. Consequently, the TA@Teb@DMSNs constructed in this research might be used as an efficient nanopesticide formulation for advancing the sustainable development of agriculture. Graphical Abstract A novel nanopesticide delivery system is prepared by depositing of tannic acid-Cu complex on dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles, which effectively improves the adhesion and effective time of pesticide on the leaf.

Carboxymethyl chitosan-encapsulated sulfur-functionalized cubic silica: enhanced leaf adhesion and stimuli-responsive pesticide delivery

Yan Wang,Menghui Wan,Yanbao Zhao,Lei Sun

Smart controlled-release nanopesticide systems offer enhanced pesticide efficiency through targeted delivery. In this study, we prepared sulfur-containing square mesoporous silica (S-MSN) carriers, combined them with carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) to build a dual-responsive pesticide delivery platform (DNF@S-MSN@CCS) for sustained pesticide release. The S-MSN carriers demonstrated a high drug loading capacity of 21.3 %, excellent biocompatibility, responsive degradation and improved pesticide retention on hydrophobic leaves. Compared with spherical carriers, the cubic drug-loaded system shows a 33 % improvement in resistance to rain wash and a 38.8 % increase in liquid-holding capacity. Superior foliar adhesion and UV-shielding properties reduced photodegradation, extending DNF's UV half-life 6-fold compared to pure dinotefuran (DNF). Bioassays showed equivalent mortality against Plutella xylostella larvae as conventional formulations at reduced dosages. This work presents an effective strategy for sustainable pest management.

Biomineralization-inspired porous calcium carbonate microspheres as a controlled release system of herbicides/pesticides

Yaoxun Zeng,Xinyi Li,Fangzheng Chen,Huiling Ye,Keyi Rong,Zhili Ran,Binhong Liu,Zhenxing Pan,Xiuxian Xie,Junze Tang,Xujie Liu,Yan He

Low bioavailability and environmental pollution are the key problems that restrict the sustainable development of traditional herbicides and pesticides. In this study, inspired by biomineralization, we prepared porous calcium carbonate microspheres (PCMs) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCs) as particle size and morphology modifiers. PCMs have large specific surface area (87.6 m 2 /g) and mesoporous structure, which allows them to efficiently load herbicides (497±24 mg/g) and pesticides (318±17 mg/g). Additionally, the PCMs exhibit pH-responsive decomposition, enabling responsive release of glyphosate/chlorpyrifos in weak acid environments. In the simulation experiments, we found that the PCMs improved the adhesion ability of glyphosate/chlorpyrifos on the leaf surface and reduced the glyphosate/chlorpyrifos loss rate (1.69-fold reduction for glyphosate; 1.68-fold reduction for chlorpyrifos). Furthermore, glyphosate/chlorpyrifos loaded PCMs (GLY@PCMs/CPF@PCMS) exhibited herbicidal/insecticidal performance with the same efficacy as glyphosate/chlorpyrifos. Therefore, the PCMs provide an effective method for controlling herbicides/pesticides loss, controlled release of herbicides/pesticides, and improving herbicides/pesticides utilization efficiency. As a result, PCMs have the potential to be used as a pesticide/herbicide controlled release system, providing new ideas and theoretical support for the design of multifunctional nanoherbicides/nanopesticides in the future.
