The use of core-shell conductive microspheres as conductive fillers for anisotropic conductive films (ACFs) has broad application prospects for high-precision circuit connections. However, existing preparation methods suffer from environmental pollution and a relatively long processing procedure. Therefore, we propose a bio-inspired, simple, and environmentally friendly method for preparing PS/Ni core-shell conductive particles suitable for ACFs. Specifically, this study utilized the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine (DA) to modify the surface of polystyrene (PS) microspheres. The catechol groups in polydopamine (PDA) act as both reducing agents and anchor groups for palladium (Pd) atoms to catalyze the electroless nickel plating . Results indicated that the amount of (PDA) on the PS surface and the morphology of the formed nickel-phosphor (Ni P) layer were regulated by adjusting the DA polymerization time and concentrations. The prepared PS-PDA/Ni conducting particles with an average diameter of 2 ± 0.2 μm has a low density (1.5 g/cm 3 ) and can be applied to ACFs. The application of the prepared ACFs was demonstrated by bonding two flexible print circuits (FPC) with a line spacing of 200 μm. Good adhesion, conductivity, and anisotropic properties were observed in the bonded FPC-200s. This study provides useful information for producing suitable conductive particles with easy synthesis for ACFs applications.

Array-patterned anisotropic conductive films (A-ACFs) possessing periodically arranged conductive particles distributed in curable resins can have high circuit-bonding precision; however, the preparation of A-ACFs is a challenging work. On the other hand, the traditional electrolysis coating of metal on polymer cores as the conductive particles needs long preparation steps. Herein, a new simplified approach uses polyaniline (PANI) as an intermediate layer to wrap the polystyrene (PS) microspheres and also chelate silver to prepare silver-coated PS microspheres (PS@PANI@Ag). Through a series of experimental regulation, neat PS@PANI@Ag microspheres with an average diameter of 4.73 ± 0.13 μm possessing a silver layer of about 65 nm and weight percentage of 23.6% were prepared. For developing A-ACFs, an approach is loading the prepared particles into the microcavities with a diameter of 6 μm and depth of 4 μm in silicon template through rubbing assembly process, transferring these particles onto the surface of a kind of chosen polymerizable acrylate resin to keep their periodicity, and embedding these particles in the polymeric resin films. These A-ACFs were used to bond indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and flexible-printed circuits (FPC) with 200-μm spacing to achieve low connection resistance of 1.78 ± 0.03 Ω/0.4 mm 2 and high insulation resistance over 200 MΩ. After aging at 85 °C and 85% relative humidity condition for 120 h, the connection resistance change is less 9.8%, showing the bonded device’s good environmental stability. The anisotropic property was also demonstrated using a homemade device through turning LEDs on or off. Therefore, the conductive particles’ and A-ACFs’ preparation methods may provide new insights for ACFs’ designing strategy and application in industry. Graphical

It is a crucial task to design and fabricate the microscopic construction unit for researching and developing polyfunctional novel macroscopic aeolotropic conductive films (ACFs). In this work, {High concentration 2,7-dibromo-9-fluorenone (H-DBF)/[polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) + polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)]}//[low concentration DBF (L-DBF)/(PVDF + PVP)] Janus nanofibers as construction units to directionally arrange to form ACF are devised and facilely constructed by a parallel electrospinning technology. ACF consists of a photoactive semiconductor material concurrently as a luminescent and conductive material. H-DBF displays high conductance and weak luminescence, but L-DBF exhibits low conductance and high luminescence. By taking full advantage of traits of DBF, for the first time, high and low concentrations of DBF are utilized and further integrated into the Janus nanofiber (JN), and thus rational design of construction unit is realized at the microscopic level. Under light illumination, the H-DBF side is conductive and the L-DBF side is insulating, resulting in the fact that the arrayed ACF conducts and insulates along the arranged and perpendicular orientation of JNs respectively. Therefore, the ACF has aeolotropic conductivity by adjusting the DBF content on both sides of Janus nanofiber. When there is no light illumination, the ACF does not have electrically conductive aeolotropy and displays insulativity. The ACF realizes the conversion from non-aeolotropic conductivity to aeolotropic conductivity by converting from no light to light illumination. At the same time, because the luminous intensity of L-DBF is stronger than that of H-DBF, the introduction of L-DBF side can improve the luminous intensity of the ACF and achieve excellent versatility, realizing visualization effect. ACF reveals green luminescence under light illumination. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the sample has tunable aeolotropic conductivity and luminescence by only adjusting the content of a substance. The devising conception and technique play an essential role to develop new-typed ACFs with polyfunction.

The preparation of conductive filler is a key technology in anisotropic conductive films preparation. In recent decades, research on the preparation of novel conductive particles has reached a bottleneck. Porous gold materials exhibit high compressibility, low density, and excellent conductivity. It is believed that using porous gold microspheres (PGMS) to supersede polymer composite conductive microspheres has the potential to prepare anisotropic conductive film (ACF) with better performance. However, preparing ultrafine (1–10 µm) PGMS remains challenging. Herein, the study presents a novel method for preparing PGMS with controllable particle size and high sphericity. Results show that porous gold microspheres ACF (PGMS-ACF), containing only 5 wt.% particles (size range 4.5–10.5 µm), achieves good conductivity when held at a pressure range of 0.05–0.6 MPa. Its compression ratio is between 33% and 71% at 0.3 MPa. The 4-point probe measurement shows a contact resistance as low as 10 mΩ in 2 mm 2 . Moreover, PGMS-ACF also exhibits a good linear relationship within 3.3 A. Compared to commercial polymer composite conductive microspheres ACF, PGMS-ACF offers a significant advantage in achieving a large compression ratio, which in turn leads to improved conductivity and reduces the need for precise sorting. The research provides a new approach for the preparation of novel ACF.

Successfully designed and synthesized PS@Ni@Cu core–shell composite microspheres, which provide efficient electronic transmission for anisotropic conductive films for electronic packaging applications. Herein, a simple method for preparing core–shell composite microspheres using Pickering emulsion polymerization as a template, a dense nano-nickel shell layer was coated on the surface of polystyrene to obtain PS@Ni microspheres, the microspheres have conductivity and magnetic properties. Then the microspheres were coated with nano-copper layer by electroless plating to enhance the mobility of electrons in specific media. Finally, the microspheres are laminated in epoxy resin, which can realize directional (horizontal, inclined, and vertical) movement under magnetic field force to form anisotropic conductive film. The conductivity is 171.68 S cm −1 , the adhesiveness and conductivity of the film can be changed by adjusting the content of microspheres. The film has excellent thermal stability, good adhesion, and can be anisotropic conductive. The difference in conductivity between the conductive direction and the insulating direction is about 10 8 orders of magnitude, and it can adapt to strong acids and alkalis and other more extreme environments. It is significance to the development of electronic packaging and is expected to be widely used in the field of electronic devices.

Polymerization while swelling, a promising and high-efficiency technique based on seeded polymerization, was applied to synthesize monodisperse polystyrene (PS) microspheres with an average diameter of ∼6 μm. The polymerization time was reduced to only 22 hours compared to the traditional way of about 3 days. Taking the synthesized PS particles as templates, conductive shells were prepared by chemically plating nickel on the particle surface. Moreover, an anisotropic conductive film (ACF) was produced using conductive nickel microspheres as electricity transmission media. After removing the PS templates, the obtained magnetic nickel hollow microspheres have a potential application in rapid waste removal and detoxification extraction with a very simple procedure.
