Removal of diclofenac and oxytetracycline from synthetic urine by furfuryl alcohol-derived mesoporous carbon

Xiaoyi Xu,Zhimin He,Hui Tang,Yidong Sun,Shuyuan Zhang,Dezhi Shi,Fangying Ji

In this study, using furfuryl alcohol as the precursor carbon and mesoporous silica as the template, and furfuryl alcohol-derived mesoporous carbon (FMC) was prepared. The specific surface area of FMC was 1022.61 m 2 /g, the pore volume was 1.71 cm 3 /g, and the mesoporous volume was 98.8%. Based on the adsorption kinetics of pharmaceuticals onto the FMC in synthetic urine, equilibrium adsorption was reached in 120 min, and it followed a pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherms were well-fitted by the Sips isotherm model, and the saturated adsorption capacities of diclofenac and oxytetracycline in fresh urine were 411.8 mg/g and 465.9 mg/g, respectively. Batch experiment results showed that pharmaceutical removal was strongly influenced by urine components such as sodium chloride, urea, and ammonium hydroxide. The adsorption of diclofenac and oxytetracycline was influenced by many factors including π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds , and electrostatic forces. FMC exhibited excellent reusability and retained urine nutrients during pharmaceutical adsorption.

Selective Recovery of Phosphorus from Synthetic Urine Using Flow-Electrode Capacitive Deionization (FCDI)-Based Technology

Longqian Xu,Chao Yu,Shiyu Tian,Yunfeng Mao,Yang Zong,Xiaomeng Zhang,Bing Zhang,Changyong Zhang,Deli Wu

Extraction of high-purity phosphate (P) from source-separated urine has attracted growing interest, given its potential economic and environmental benefits. In this study, we present an innovative strategy for selectively separating P from synthetic urine containing a high concentration of Cl–, simply by adjusting the charging and discharging processes of a flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) unit. During the charging process, both P and Cl– will be transported to the anode chamber and be adsorbed by the charged carbon particles. The inevitable Faradaic reactions induced the generation of H+ and led to the conversion of charged P ions into uncharged H3PO4 and spontaneous desorption into the electrolyte. When the electrode polarity is reversed, constantly charged species like Cl– would be mostly pushed back into the spacer chamber, whereas neutral H3PO4 was expected to be selectively trapped in the anode chamber due to sluggish pH variations (particularly when using a higher carbon content), forming a P-rich solution. Under the optimal operating conditions (i.e., carbon content of 5 wt %, charging and discharging current densities of 10 and −15 A/m2, respectively, and charging and discharging current times of 120 and 30 min, respectively), a stable recovery efficiency (164 mg/L per cycle) and selectivity (ρ > 2, compared to Cl–) of P were attained at a relatively low level of electric energy consumption. Results demonstrated that FCDI could be a promising technology for efficient P removal and recovery from source-separated urine without the consumption of additional chemicals.

A sensitive electrochemical sensor for the detection of sports stimulant methyltestosterone via ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposite

Yuzhe Liu,Chunlian Quan

This research paper introduces a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor designed for the detection of the sports stimulant methyltestosterone, utilizing a unique ZnO/TiO 2 nanocomposite. Methyltestosterone, an extensively abused anabolic steroid in sports, calls for an efficient detection technique to maintain sporting integrity. The sensor was designed and synthesized with enhanced properties leveraging the specific characteristics of the ZnO/TiO 2 nanocomposite. The sensor demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity towards methyltestosterone, outstripping traditional detection techniques. When subjected to real-world scenarios, including testing in synthetic urine samples, the sensor showcased outstanding precision and consistency, making it a robust tool for anti-doping control.

A ratiometric fluorescent probe for sensitive determination of the important glycopeptide antibiotic vancomycin

Deng Tao,Hu Shiyou,Zhao Liang,Wu Shengjun,Liu Wei,Chen Tongkai,Fu Tingdan,Wang He,Shi Huifang,Huang Xin-an,Liu Fang

A novel sensitive and selective probe for the important antibiotic vancomycin (Van) has been synthesized by integrating a coumarin and a fluorescein as dual fluorescence reporters and a Van binding peptide d -Ala- d -Ala. Only weak green fluorescence was initially observed, which was mostly attributed to fluorescence self-quenching induced by fluorophore stacking. Upon the binding of Van with the d -Ala- d -Ala peptide, the fluorescence turned on, probably due the disaggregation of fluorophores. The intensity ratio of the dual emission bands I 519 / I 446 exhibited an excellent linear relationship with the concentration of Van increasing from 0–20 μM in synthetic urine. The lowest detection limit was calculated to be 92.8 nM in urine, which made the probe applicable in clinically relevant concentration ranges. The synthetic probe has also shown the potential for Van detection in human serum. More interestingly, this probe has been successfully applied for in vivo imaging of Van in zebrafish.
